Keywords: biochar, biodiesel, Biofuels, biomass based catalyst, transesterification
Despite being a limited and scarce resource, the necessity and exploitation of fossil fuels are unstoppable in serving human demands. In order to supply energy demand without causing environmental damage, it is crucial to utilize a variety of renewable feedstock resources. Biochar, made up mostly of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, is the product of the thermochemical processes of pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, torrefaction, and hydrothermal liquefaction. Biochar, once activated, has the potential to act as a catalyst in a variety of energy generation processes, including transesterification and fermentation. Transesterification is the process that is used to produce biodiesel from a variety of oils, both edible and non-edible, as well as animal fats in the presence of either a homogeneous or a heterogeneous catalyst. When selecting a catalyst, the amount of free fatty acid (FFA) content in the oil is considered. Homogeneous catalysts are superior to heterogeneous catalysts becaus... [more]

Keywords: Kalman filter, permanent magnet synchronous generator, state estimation technique, variable speed wind turbine, wind turbine system
The power system network grows yearly with a large number of nonlinear power generation systems. In this scenario, accurate modeling, control, and monitoring of interface systems and energy conversion systems are critical to the reliability and performance of the overall power system. In this trend, the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine systems (WTS) equipped with a full-rated converter significantly contribute to the development of new and renewable energy generation. The various components and control systems involved in operating these systems introduce higher complexity, uncertainty, and highly nonlinear control challenges. To deal with this, state estimation remains an ideal and reliable procedure in the relevant control of the entire WTS. In essence, state estimation can be useful in control procedures, such as low-voltage ride-through operation, active power regulation, stator fault diagnosis, maximum power point tracking, and sensor faults, as it... Keywords: electric vehicle, grid to vehicle, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, smart charging, vehicle to grid
Due to the rapid expansion of electric vehicles (EVs), they are expected to be one of the main contributors to transportation. The increasing use of fossil fuels as one of the most available energy sources has led to the emission of greenhouse gases, which will play a vital role in achieving a sustainable transportation system. Developed and developing countries have long-term plans and policies to use EVs instead of internal combustion vehicles and to use renewable energy to generate electricity, which increases the number of charging stations. Recently, to meet the charging demand for EVs, the main focus of researchers has been on smart charging solutions. In addition, maintaining power quality and peak demand for grids has become very difficult due to the widespread deployment of EVs as personal and commercial vehicles. This paper provides information on EV charging control that can be used to improve the design and implementation of charging station infrastructure. An in-depth anal... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bandgap, BiVO4, oxygen vacancies, potassium chloride, tetravalent vanadium
The monoclinic BiVO4 in a powder state was prepared via a hydrothermal method, with the addition of KCl as a structure-directing agent. The as-prepared sample was calcined at different temperatures (400−600 °C), either in the air or in Ar gas. It is found that, though the morphology and crystal structure mostly remain unchanged, the bandgap properties are modified during calcination. A detailed analysis of the surface chemical states and optical absorption properties reveals the involvement of tetravalent vanadium ions and oxygen vacancies as the cause of the band modification. The bandgap properties are to be found tunable via changing the calcination condition, as well as the KCl concentration in the precursor. The photocatalytic properties of BiVO4 samples are greatly enhanced with the addition of KCl in the precursor, but degraded by post-annealing, where the residual Cl in the calcined sample may act as an inhibitor. The enhanced photoactivity is explained in terms of favorable fa... [more]

Keywords: hydrophilic, Li-ion battery, Poly(ether ether ketone), separator, surface modification
With the global effort to reduce fossil fuels and to use eco-friendly energy, interest in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is rapidly increasing. In the LIB system, the separator is an important component for determining the rate performance and safety of cells. Although polyolefin separators are commercially used in LIBs, they still suffer from inferior electrolyte wettability and low thermal stability issues. Here, we introduce a chemical surface modification for polyethylene (PE) separators using a poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) coating. The separators were pretreated in a tannic acid solution to enforce the adhesion of the coated layers. Then, PEEK was coated onto the PE surface by a doctor blading method. The separators were examined by infrared spectroscopy, and the surface properties were characterized by electrolyte uptake and contact angle measurements. The treated surface was hydrophilic, and the ionic conductivity of the cell with the modified separator was significantly improved. A... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aging study, energy storage system, internal combustion engine cranking, lead acid battery, Modelling, ultracapacitor
Ultracapacitors are energy storage devices that have shown outstanding capability in a vast spectrum of applications, mainly in energy storage systems required to deliver short bursts of electrical energy. Ultracapacitors possess high power density while batteries possess high energy density. In this paper, a hybrid energy storage device comprising a lithium-ion ultracapacitor module and a lead acid battery was modeled, built, and tested for vehicular start−stop application, which requires a much larger number of engine cranking events than conventional vehicles. The combination of a lead acid battery with Li-ion ultracapacitors was chosen due to the fact that the vast majority of vehicles utilize lead acid batteries to crank the internal combustion engine. This allows retrofitting this hybrid setup in conventional vehicles along with the start−stop feature without inflicting damage to the already installed lead acid battery. The start−stop feature puts high stress on the lead acid bat... [more]

The increased need for renewable energy systems to generate power, store energy, and connect energy storage devices with applications has become a major challenge. Energy storage using batteries is most appropriate for energy sources like solar, wind, etc. A non-isolated three-port DC−DC-converter energy conversion unit is implemented feeding the brushless DCmotor drive. In this paper, a non-isolated three-port converter is designed and simulated for battery energy storage, interfaced with an output drive. Based on the requirements, the power extracted from the solar panel during the daytime is used to charge the batteries through the three-port converter. The proposed three-port converter is analyzed in terms of operating principles and power flow. An FPGA-based NI LabView PXI with SbRio interface is used to develop the suggested approach’s control hardware, and prototype model results are obtained to test the proposed three-port converter control system’s effectiveness and practicali... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical mismatch, hardware MPPT, partial shading mitigation, PV interconnection schemes, reconfigurable photovoltaic array, TCT
An optical isolator circuit is developed to detect and dynamically relocate the photovoltaic (PV) module under partial shading. The suggested system control structure operates in two modes. Mode 1 governs the system at global maxima (GM) by tracing the power-voltage (PV) curve. Mode 2 detects and separates all the bypassed modules from a PV string/array by means of a decentralized control and stores its power in the battery. Simulations are performed on different shading patterns to verify the efficacy of the suggested system. The results showcase that the averaged harnessed power using the proposed circuit is 25.26% more than the total cross-tied (TCT) and series-parallel (SP) array configurations. The proposed circuit does not require complex gate driver circuits and large switch counts. The circuit is scalable and can be implemented on an “N × N” array.

Keywords: battery energy storage system, demand and supply balance, energy management system, photovoltaic system, prosumer, reliability, resilient
Worldwide energy shortages and the green energy revolution have triggered an increase in the penetration of standalone microgrids. However, they have limited generation capacity and are wasteful when excess generated energy is curtailed. This presents an opportunity for the coordinated operation of multiple prosumer microgrids that absorb this waste to enhance their resiliency and reliability. This paper proposes a reliable prosumer model with an inbuilt energy management system (EMS) simulator that considers the mentioned deficiencies for constructing resilient interconnected prosumer microgrids. The EMS simulator operates in a real-time dynamic environment to coordinate the prosumer components and performs flexible switching for (1) prioritizing critical load by shedding the non-critical load and (2) meeting load demand locally or from other interconnected prosumers. The EMS simulator maintains energy balance by setting limits for the battery energy storage system (BESS) to preserve... [more]

Keywords: medium wind turbine, power compensation, power control, wind turbine control
In this study, a power compensation control algorithm was designed and validated for commercial 100 kW medium wind turbine models for power compensation due to additional generator loss. Generally, torque control considering generator efficiency is applied to a controller of a medium wind turbine; however, a control corresponding to a decrease in generator efficiency due to the surrounding environment is not possible. There is a possibility that an additional generator loss may occur due to the surrounding environment of the wind turbine already installed, and accordingly, a power compensation control algorithm is required because power is expected to decrease. The power compensation control algorithms may be divided into three methods according to a control strategy, and three power compensation control algorithms were explained and designed. The proposed power compensation control algorithms were validated using DNV’s Bladed program. The simulation conditions were selected at an aver... [more]

Keywords: ADSA, AFLI, axisymmetric drop shape analysis, axisymmetric fluid–liquid interfaces, boiling, heat and mass transfer, surface energy, surface tension, Young–Laplace equation
Surface tension is a meaningful parameter influencing boiling and condensation in macroscopic scale, in confined spaces, or for nanofluids; it further affects boiling with surfactants. Surface, or interfacial, tension is an important property in the research into increasing heat transfer, enhancing efficiency of photovoltaic systems, improving engine operation, or forming drugs or polymers. It is often determined using axisymmetric drop shape analysis based on the differential equations system formulated by Bashforth and Adams. The closed-form expression of the interface shape states the radii defining the bubbles are the negative numbers, which causes the temperature profile drops along the heat transfer direction, e.g., in the Wiśniewski formulas for the temperature in the vapor bubbles; moreover, the drop, or bubble, possesses only one main radius of curvature, which may reduce the number of the unknowns and equations in the Bashforth and Adams algorithm. An alternative method apply... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture network density, hydraulic fracture propagation, hydraulic fracturing, shale reservoir
Here, laboratory tests were conducted to examine the effects of natural fracture density (NFD) on the propagation of hydraulic fracture (HF), HF and natural fracture (NF) interaction, and the formation of the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). Laboratory methods were proposed to prepare samples with dense, medium and spare discrete orthogonal fracture networks. After conducting a true triaxial hydraulic fracturing experiment on the synthetic blocks, the experimental results were analyzed by qualitative failure morphology descriptions, and the quantitative analysis used two proposed new indices. On the pump pressure profiles, it reflected the non-linear interactions between HFs and NFs well. For rock blocks with a dense DFN density, pump pressure curves present fluctuation shape and the degree of interaction between HF and NF is strong; however, for model blocks with a sparse DFN density, the pump pressure curves present a sudden drop shape. In addition, different propagation behaviors... [more]

Grzegorz Hołdyński, Zbigniew Skibko, Andrzej Borusiewicz
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power quality, voltage asymmetry, voltage distortion, wind energy
The phenomenon of voltage asymmetry is common in electricity networks and is the cause of many unfavourable phenomena occurring, such as an increase in power and energy losses, as well as the abnormal operation of certain loads. Voltage asymmetry can be caused by several different factors, which include the design of the transmission line (e.g., routing of conductors in relation to each other and the earth), the parameters of consumer circuits (e.g., unequal loading of individual phases), or the design of network equipment (e.g., generators or transformers). An asymmetrical condition also occurs during system disturbances such as single-phase short circuits or lightning. One of the many factors impinging on voltage asymmetry in the electrical network is also the effect of load, but in the case of medium voltage power networks, this effect is neglected in the literature. This paper presents and evaluates the influence of the power consumed by consumers on the values of zero-voltage asym... [more]

In this work, a study was performed on the influence of the ratio of height to the diameter of the reduction zone of a small-size downdraft gasifier as well as of the fuel fraction sizes on the gas quality (the quality was evaluated for CO content). The ratio of a full side area to the volume of a fuel fraction (SVR) was used as a fuel parameter. The maximum CO concentration was observed when using a small fuel fraction with SVR—0.7−0.72 mm−1 and when adhering to the ratio of height to the diameter of the reduction zone H/D—0.5−0.6. The maximum electric power for gasoline generators (nominal power equaled 4 kW) when using the gas received from the fast-growing hybrid willow biomass equaled 2.4 kW. This power is 37.5% lower than when using gasoline and 7.0% lower than when using the gas received from the hardwood biomass. The emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere by the gasoline generator engine equaled 0.12−0.14% CO and 24−27 mln−1 CxHy. The emissions were 64.8 times less... [more]

Keywords: global maximum power point (GMPP), local maximum power point (LMPP), perturbation and observation (P&O), simulated annealing (SA)
The electricity sector has been undergoing profound transformations. In particular, the Portuguese self-consumer regime has allowed customers of the medium and low voltage electricity grid to be producers/consumers of electricity, actively contributing to greater energy efficiency. In this context, the energy that comes from the sun is not used to its maximum. In addition, photovoltaic cells have a characteristic operating curve (voltage vs. current), in which any operating point is reflected. Within this curve, there is a particular point known as the maximum power point (MPP) at which the cell supplies the maximum power output to a load. If the cell does not operate at this point, it has lower efficiency values. To harness maximum power under standard and dynamic shading conditions, there are various techniques of low complexity for capturing maximum power. We present a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm capable of dealing with the problem of partial shading. This algorith... [more]

Keywords: anion exchange membrane fuel cell, fuel cell performance, gas diffusion layer, GDL thickness
Gas diffusion layers (GDLs) play a critical role in anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) water management. In this work, the effect of GDL thickness on the cell performance of the AEMFC was experimentally investigated. Three GDLs with different thicknesses of 120, 260, and 310 µm (denoted as GDL-120, GDL-260, and GDL-310, respectively) were prepared and tested in a single H2/O2 AEMFC. The experimental results showed that the GDL-260 employed in both anode and cathode electrodes exhibited the best cell performance. There was a small difference in cell performance for GDL-260 and GDL-310, while water flooding was observed in the case of using GDL-120 operated at current densities greater than 1100 mA cm−2. In addition, it was found that the GDL thickness had more sensitivity to the AEMFC performance as used in the anode electrode rather than in the cathode electrode, indicating that water removal at the anode was more challenging than water supply at the cathode. The strategy of wat... [more]

This study investigates the enhancement of the rate of evaporation from a nanoengineered solid surface using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. Four different types of surface modifications were introduced to examine the thermal transportation behavior. The surface modification includes: (1) transformation of surface wetting condition from hydrophobic to hydrophilic, (2) implementing nanostructures on the smooth surface, (3) cutting nano slots on the smooth surface and (4) introducing nano-level surface roughness. Evaporation behavior from the same effective surface area was also studied. The simulation domain consisted of three distinct zones: solid base wall made of copper, a few layers of liquid argon, and a vapor zone made of argon. All the nano-level surface modifications were introduced on the solid base surface. The few layers of liquid argon representing the liquid zone of the domain take heat from the solid surface and get evaporated. Outside this solid and liquid... [more]
