How Do Methane, Carbon Dioxide or Fatty Acids Affect Waxy Crude Oils?
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fatty acids, true boiling point (TBP) curve, wax appearance temperature (WAT), waxy crude oils
In the oil and gas industry, wax formation and deposition are common problems, particularly during production and transportation. To better understand the expected behaviour of a given waxy crude oil and consequently select the best solution to prevent wax deposition, it is vital to conduct laboratory tests or numerical simulations to model its performance. For a Brazilian oil field, the phase behaviour of 17 crude oils was modelled using Multiflash software. To tune the model, laboratory tests were used, including true boiling point curves and viscosity tests. This study followed two stages: the first allowed characterization of the wax appearance temperature (WAT) and determination of the expected precipitation curves for these crude samples, and the second stage was evaluation of the impact on wax precipitation after the addition of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) or fatty acid (CH3(CH2)nCOOH). Results showed that WAT varied between 47.5 °C and 51.6 °C for these crude oil sample... [more]

End-of-Charge Temperature Rise and State-of-Health Evaluation of Aged Lithium-Ion Battery
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aged battery, battery recycling, battery repurposing, battery safety, internal short circuit, lithium dendrite, lithium short
An increasing demand to repurpose used lithium-ion batteries in secondary applications is driving the need to develop methods of evaluating the state-of-health of used batteries. In this paper, we discover a self-terminated end-of-charge temperature rise (ECTR) phenomenon in 18650 lithium-ion cells, both recycled from the field and aged under controlled conditions in the lab. ECTR is characterized by an additional temperature rise near the end of the charging process and is accompanied by low coulombic efficiency. A higher charge rate and longer inactive time at low state-of-charge appear to increase the occurrence of ECTR. The intensity of ECTR is found to closely correlate with the excess charge capacity but is less affected by the charge current or cell impedance. ECTR is weakly dependent on the remaining cell capacity in recycled cells, and the controlled aging study shows that aging condition, not remaining capacity or internal resistance, determines the presence and intensity of... Research on Anti-Icing Performance of Graphene Photothermal Superhydrophobic Surface for Wind Turbine Blades
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: de-icing/anti-icing, graphene, photothermal effect, superhydrophobic surfaces
In this study, graphene is used as a photothermal material, which is added to the SiO2 superhydrophobic solution treated with fluorine silane, and then sprayed on the copper plate surface to prepare a new type of photothermal superhydrophobic surface with contact angles up to 160.5° and 159.8°. Under the conditions of natural convection, the effects of photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces on droplet condensation, freezing, and frost growth are investigated in different environments. The results show that the photothermal superhydrophobic surface can not only delay the freezing of surface droplets, prolong the freezing time of droplets, and reduce the thickness of the frost layer, but also allow for the rapid removal of droplets under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. If the droplet is irradiated by an infrared laser emitter while the cooling system is still turned on, the internal temperature of the droplet will always be higher than the crystallization temperature under the illuminat... State of the Art Monte Carlo Method Applied to Power System Analysis with Distributed Generation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, electric power systems, Monte Carlo Method, smart grids
Traditionally, electric power systems are subject to uncertainties related to equipment availability, topological changes, faults, disturbances, behaviour of load, etc. In particular, the dissemination of distributed generation (DG), especially those based on renewable sources, has introduced new challenges to power systems, adding further randomness to the management of this segment. In this context, stochastic analysis could support planners and operators in a more appropriate manner than traditional deterministic analysis, since the former is able to properly model the power system uncertainties. The objective of this work is to present recent achievements of one of the most important techniques for stochastic analysis, the Monte Carlo Method (MCM), to study the technical and operational aspects of electric networks with DG. Besides covering the DG topic itself, this paper also addresses emerging themes related to smart grids and new technologies, such as electric vehicles, storage,... [more]

Prediction and Mitigation of Wind Farm Blockage Losses Considering Mesoscale Atmospheric Response
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: turbine load control, two-scale momentum theory, wake models, wind extractability, wind farm optimisation, wind resource assessment
The engineering wind farm models currently used in industry can assess power losses due to turbine wake effects, but the prediction of power losses due to farm blockage is still a challenge. In this study we demonstrate a new prediction method of farm blockage losses and a possible strategy to mitigate them for a large offshore wind farm in the North Sea, by combining a common engineering wind farm model ’FLORIS’ with the ’two-scale momentum theory’ of Nishino and Dunstan (2020). Results show that the farm blockage losses depend significantly on the ’wind extractability’ factor, which reflects the strength of mesoscale atmospheric response. For a typical range of the extractability factor (assessed using a numerical weather prediction model) the farm blockage losses are shown to vary between about 5% and 15% of the annual energy production (AEP). However, these losses may be mitigated by adjusting turbine operating points taking into account the wind extractability. It is shown that a... [more]

Numerical Study of Liquid Metal Turbulent Heat Transfer in Cross-Flow Tube Banks
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross-flow, heat transfer, liquid metal, tube bank, turbulent Prandtl number
Heavy liquid metals (HLM) are attractive coolants for nuclear fission and fusion applications due to their excellent thermal properties. In these reactors, a high coolant flow rate must be processed in compact heat exchangers, and as such, it may be convenient to have the HLM flowing on the shell side of a helical coil steam generator. Technical knowledge about HLM turbulent heat transfer in cross-flow tube bundles is rather limited, and this paper aims to investigate the suitability of Reynolds Average Navier−Stokes (RANS) models for the simulation of this problem. Staggered and in-line finite tube bundles are considered for compact (a=1.25), medium (a=1.45), and wide (a=1.65) pitch ratios. The lead bismuth eutectic alloy with Pr=2.21×10−2 is considered as the working fluid. A 2D computational domain is used relying on the k−ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) for the turbulent momentum flux and the Prt concept for the turbulent heat flux prediction. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, ASWT rotor, blade angle, wake characteristics, wind energy
Continuous improvement of wind turbines represent an effective way of achieving green energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuel. Conventional lift-type horizontal axis wind turbines, which are widely used, are designed to run under high wind speed to obtain a high efficiency. Aiming to use the low-speed wind in urban areas, a novel turbine, which is called the Archimedes Spiral Wind Turbine (abbreviated as ASWT), was recently proposed for low-speed wind applications. In the current work, a numerical simulation on the five ASWT rotors with different blade angles was carried out, which were performed to predict the detailed aerodynamic performance and wake characteristics. The results show that the ASWT rotor with a large blade angle has a wider operating tip speed ratio range and a higher tip speed ratio point of maximum power coefficient within a certain range, and yet the ASWT rotor with the larger blade angle has a higher thrust coefficient. Additionally, the ASWT rotor with a la... [more]

On the Effect of the Time Interval Base and Home Appliance on the Renewable Quota of a Building in an Alpine Location
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control strategies, household appliances, PV, renewable energy ratio, self-consumption, time interval base
The European goal of decarbonization drives design toward high-performance buildings that maximize the use of renewable sources. Therefore, the European RED II Directive and Italian law raise the minimum renewable share required for new buildings and major renovations. Currently, the renewable energy ratio (RER) is used for the mandatory verification, obtained with a quasi-steady state calculation on a monthly basis, while much of the scientific literature uses self-consumption factor (SCF) and load coverage factor (LCF) often calculated through dynamic simulation. However, the use of a monthly balance implies the use of the national grid as a virtual battery through the net metering mechanism. The actual share of renewable coverage in the absence of expensive electric storage will necessarily be lower. The link between the different indices, the effect of the time base used in the calculation as well as the actual renewable share achieved by buildings, considering also plug loads not... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Batteries, battery lifetime, BESS, energy storage systems, peak load shaving, power electronics, renewable sources, storage management systems
Peak load shaving using energy storage systems has been the preferred approach to smooth the electricity load curve of consumers from different sectors around the world. These systems store energy during off-peak hours, releasing it for usage during high consumption periods. Most of the current solutions use solar energy as a power source and chemical batteries as energy storage elements. Despite the clear benefits of this strategy, the service life of the battery energy storage system (BESS) is a driving factor for economic feasibility. The present research work proposes the use of storage systems based on actively connected batteries with power electronics support. The proposed scheme allows the individualized control of the power flow, enabling the use of batteries with different ages, technologies or degradation states in a same BESS. The presented results show that overcoming inherent limitations found in passively connected battery banks makes it possible to extend the system’s u... [more]

Assessing the Role of Energy Storage in Multiple Energy Carriers toward Providing Ancillary Services: A Review
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ancillary services, battery energy storage, flexibility, multicarrier energy storage systems, thermal energy storage systems
Renewable energy power plants and transport and heating electrification projects are being deployed to enable the replacement of fossil fuels as the primary energy source. This transition encourages distributed generation but makes the grid more weather-dependent, thus reducing its inertia. Simultaneously, electrical network operators face voltage, frequency, and stability challenges at the distribution level. Networks were not designed to manage the stochasticity of renewable energy sources or the congestion caused by the new transport and heating demands. Such challenges are commonly addressed through infrastructure reinforcements. This review studies how energy storage systems with different carriers can provide a collaborative solution involving prosumers as ancillary services providers at the distribution level. We focused on the European urban context; thus, we analyzed renewable energy sources, batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen fuel cells, thermal energy storage, and electric... [more]

Air/Water Heat Pumps in Existing Heating and Hot Water Systems for Better Urban Air Quality and Primary Energy Savings: Scenarios of Two Italian Cities
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, heat pumps, primary energy, urban air quality
In a previous work, a significant contribution to urban air pollution, related to fuel-fired heating systems, was recorded. Thus, the replacement of existing boilers for space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) production systems with high-temperature air/water heat pumps (which can operate with radiators, the most common terminals in the existing building stock), is proposed for the improvement of the urban air quality. Scenarios of substitution within the entire residential building stock of two Italian cities, Milan and Salerno, belonging to different climate zones and with their own thermophysical characteristics, were analyzed. For each of them, the consequences of the replacement intervention on emission reduction, primary energy savings and lower CO2 production were evaluated. The results show that reduction of primary energy consumption, evaluated at design outdoor temperature and for the present generation mix, varied between 34% and 54% in Milan and between 43% and 60% in S... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage plants, DC–DC power conversion, equalizers
This work studies a full-power, module-integrated back-to-back converter for battery energy storage applications. The proposed solution optimizes bank usage across a wide range of individual battery capacities. The converter design and control are examined, as well as the use of a loss reduction method when operating under a partial load. The suggested architectural work allows the bank to have a regulated voltage output, simulating a passive bank, while controlling the charge and discharge of individual batteries to their maximum capacities. Those capabilities are also evaluated using linear programming optimization, in order the quantify the advantage. The suggested system is used in a typical use-case examined experimentally. The energy provided by an experimental lead acid bank rose 38 times after a few charge/discharge cycles.

The Impacts of Terrestrial Wind Turbine’s Operation on Telecommunication Services
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blades, communication signals, electromagnetic interference, radar, radar cross section, wind turbine
This paper presents a compendious review for the evaluation and description of the mathematical modelling of the affected components in wind turbines which cause the scattering of communication signals. The impact of an adjacent wind farm operation on telecommunication signals is that it induces electromagnetic interference (EMI) in radar, television and radio signals, resulting from the complex rotating blade’s geometry of the wind turbines. Thus, altering the quality of the reflected signal, especially the capability of the radar detection. In all the modelling studies, the radar cross section (RCS) model of a wind turbine’s blade is found to be the most complex, due to its huge computational burden. However, clutter filtering is another interesting technique, which employs the Doppler signal processing to obviate the huge computational task in RCS. In this case, the rotating blades of the wind turbine produce Doppler echoes, which in turn are used to estimate the model of the blade... [more]

An Empirical Analysis of the Effects of Energy Price Shocks for Sustainable Energy on the Macro-Economy of South Asian Countries
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy price, GDP, inflation rate, money supply, real effective exchange rate
Energy prices (EPs) play an imperative role in South Asian Country (SAC) Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This research empirically examines the influence of sustainable energy price shocks (EPSs) on macroeconomic indicators. The study is to forecast the impact of EPS on macroeconomic indicators from 1980 to 2020. The analysis is carried out by employing the Vector Auto-Regression (VAR) approach. Impulse Response Functions (IRFs) results indicate that EPS decreases Gross Domestic Product (GDP). They exist in the short run and the long run. This research study’s overall findings suggest that high EPSs have a negative impact on GDP. The study implies that policymakers should develop, adopt, and initiate some imperatives to control the unanticipated volatility and movements in EP. The study highlights that policy should be designed to prevent fluctuations in sustainable EP and plan conservative energy policies that motivate discovering alternative energy sources to meet increasing energy dem... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrate formation promoters, kinetic promoters, methane hydrate, natural gas storage and transportation, sulfosuccinates
The use of natural gas as an energy source is increasing significantly due to its low greenhouse gas emissions. However, the common methods of natural gas storage and transportation, such as liquefied or compressed natural gas, are limited in their applications because they require extreme conditions. Gas hydrate technology can be a promising alternative to conventional approaches, as artificially synthesized hydrates provide an economical, environmentally friendly, and safe medium to store energy. Nevertheless, the low rate of hydrate formation is a critical problem that hinders the industrial application of this technology. Therefore, chemical promoters are being developed to accelerate the kinetics of gas hydrate formation. In this paper, the effect of new sodium sulfosuccinate compounds, synthesized based on glycerol and pentaerythritol, on methane hydrate formation was studied. Experiments under dynamic conditions using high-pressure autoclaves demonstrated that the conversion of... [more]

A Review on Thermal Coupling of Metal Hydride Storage Tanks with Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolyzer, fuel cell, hydrogen energy, metal hydride storage, thermal management
Hydrogen is one of the energy carriers that has started to play a significant role in the clean energy transition. In the hydrogen ecosystem, storing hydrogen safely and with high volumetric density plays a key role. In this regard, metal hydride storage seems to be superior to compressed gas storage, which is the most common method used today. However, thermal management is a challenge that needs to be considered. Temperature changes occur during charging and discharging processes due to the reactions between metal, metal hydride, and hydrogen, which affect the inflow or outflow of hydrogen at the desired flow rate. There are different thermal management techniques to handle this challenge in the literature. When the metal hydride storage tanks are used in integrated systems together with a fuel cell and/or an electrolyzer, the thermal interactions between these components can be used for this purpose. This study gives a comprehensive review of the heat transfer during the charging an... [more]

IEDA-HGEO: Improved Energy Efficient with Clustering-Based Data Aggregation and Transmission Protocol for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clustering, energy consumption, multi-hop, UWSN
With the emerging technology in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN), many researchers are undergoing this field since it cannot maintain the batteries and recharge them manually. Network duration should be taken into account because they can easily be recharged by a non-conventional resource like solar energy. When coming to the data collection process, clustering is an effective method to construct vitality effective UWSNs. The clustering properties of UWSNs differ from those of terrestrial wireless sensor networks (TWSNs) due to the sparse deployment of nodes as well as the dynamic nature of the channel. This paper proposes improved efficient data aggregation in a Hexagonal grid with energy optimization (IEDA-HGEO) protocol for effective data transmission with an optimal clustering process. It is further compared with ERP2R n energy-efficient routing protocol and EGRC (Energy-efficiency Grid Routing based on 3D Cubes). The three techniques mentioned above are specifically exam... [more]

EGR and Emulsified Fuel Combination Effects on the Combustion, Performance, and NOx Emissions in Marine Diesel Engines
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion modeling, diesel engine, emission, emulsion, exhaust gas recirculation, IMEP, marine diesel engine, NOx, optical engine, two-color method
Techniques such as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and water-in-fuel emulsions (WFEs) can significantly decrease NOx emissions in diesel engines. As a disadvantage of adopting EGR, the afterburning period lengthens owing to a shortage of oxygen, lowering thermal efficiency. Meanwhile, WFEs can slightly reduce NOx emissions and reduce the afterburning phase without severely compromising thermal efficiency. Therefore, the EGR−WFE combination was modeled utilizing the KIVA-3V code along with GT power and experimental results. The findings indicated that combining EGR with WFEs is an efficient technique to reduce afterburning and enhance thermal efficiency. Under the EGR state, the NO product was evenly lowered. In the WFE, a considerable NO amount was created near the front edge of the combustion flame. Additionally, squish flow from the piston’s up−down movement improved fuel−air mixing, and NO production was increased as a result, particularly at high injection pressure. Using WFEs with... [more]
