Flow and Combustion Characteristics of Wave Rotor−Trapped Vortex Combustor System
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion mode, exhaust gas recirculation, flow stratification, periodicity, trapped vortex combustor, wave rotor
Breaking through the limit of conventional compression and combustion, wave rotor and trapped vortex combustors are able to improve the thermal efficiency of gas turbines. Detailed two-dimensional numerical simulations based on Ansys Fluent were performed to study the flow and combustion characteristics of the wave rotor−trapped vortex combustor system. The calculated pressure characteristics agree with the experimental results giving a relative error for average pressure of 0.189% at Port 2 and of 0.672% at Port 4. The flow stratification characteristics and the periodic fluctuations were found to benefit the zonal organized combustion in the trapped vortex combustor. For the six cases of different rotor speeds, as the rotor speed increased, the oxygen mass fraction at the combustor inlet rose and then fell. The proportion of exhaust gas recirculation fell at first and then rose, and the combustion mode became unstable with the dominant frequencies of the fluctuations increasing.

A Comprehensive Review of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Technologies, Architecture, and Its Applications to Improved Efficiency
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: solar cell architecture, solar cell efficiency, Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
Since the discovery of Photovoltaic (PV) effect, numerous ways of utilizing the energy that can be generated by the free everlasting solar radiation using solar panels were put forward by many researchers. However, the major disadvantage of solar panel to date is its low efficiency, which is affected by the panel temperature, cell type, panel orientation, irradiance level, etc. Though there are certain multi-junction solar panels that offer higher efficiencies, their application is very minimal due to high manufacturing cost. With the growing demand for the reduction of carbon footprint, there is a need to use and manufacture these panels in the most effective way to harness the maximum power and increase their efficiency. Another major concern is the availability of land/space for the installation of these panels. Several authors have focused on discussing the different technologies that have evolved in the manufacturing of the PV cells along with their architectures. However, there e... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CrO3, electroplating, electropolishing, selective absorbing surface, solar energy
Solar energy presents the greatest potential by which to produce heat energy with reduced carbon emissions for power generation. To increase its harvesting and conversion, it is necessary to understand fundamental concepts and develop new materials. Although many processes can obtain selective absorbing surfaces (SAS) for application in solar energy exploitation, including electroplating methods, those processes have not sufficiently investigated the substrate’s treatment impact. The present work investigates 304 stainless steel (SS304) substrates treatment influence on the film’s (coatings) optical properties of SAS based on CrO3 electroplating. For this purpose, three main steps featured in the methodology: substrates treatment, coatings deposition, and physical-chemical characterization. The former was performed by detergent cleaning (DC), acid treatment (AT), and electropolishing (EP). Then, coatings were electroplated towards chromium deposition on the substrates with different de... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: abandoned mine, energy geostructure, feasibility study, mining engineering, pumped storage
Due to the proposal of China’s carbon neutrality target, the traditional fossil energy industry continues to decline, and the proportion of new energy continues to increase. New energy power systems have high requirements for peak shaving and energy storage, but China’s current energy storage facilities are seriously insufficient in number and scale. The unique features of abandoned mines offer considerable potential for the construction of large-scale pumped storage power stations. Several countries have reported the conversion of abandoned mines to pumped storage plants, and a pilot project for the conversion of an underground reservoir group has been formalized in China. A feasibility study that considered the natural conditions, mine conditions, safety conditions, and economic benefits revealed that the construction of pumped storage power stations using abandoned mines could ameliorate several economic, ecological, and social problems, including resource utilization, ecological re... Remaining Useful Life Prediction for Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on Improved Variational Mode Decomposition and Machine Learning Algorithm
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Gaussian process regression, lithium-ion battery, long short-term memory, remaining useful life prediction, variational mode decomposition
Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of batteries is important for the health management and safety evaluation of lithium-ion batteries. Because lithium-ion batteries have capacity recovery and noise interference during actual use, direct use of measured capacity data to predict their RUL generalization ability is not efficient. Aimed at the above problems, this paper proposes an integrated life prediction method for lithium-ion batteries by combining improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) with a long short-term memory network (LSTM) and Gaussian process regression algorithm (GPR). First, the VMD algorithm decomposed the measured capacity dataset of the lithium-ion battery into a residual component and capacity regeneration component, in which the penalty factor α and mode number K in the VMD algorithm were optimized by the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Second, the LSTM and GPR models were established to predict the residual component and capacity regeneration components... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: particulate matter (PM), PM0.2, PM1, PM10, Zhundong coal
Particulate matter (PM) pollution from coal combustion is a leading contributor to the influence of atmospheric visibility, photochemical smog, and even global climate. A drop tube furnace was employed to explore the effects of temperature and chemical speciation of mineral elements on PM formation during the combustion of Zhundong coal. Chemical fractionation analysis (CFA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) were used to investigate the chemical and physical characteristics of the solid samples. It can be indicated that the combustion of similarly sized coal particles yielded more PM10 when the combustion temperature was increased from 1000 to 1400 °C. Zhundong coal is fractionated with deionized water, ammonium acetate, and hydrochloric acid, and pulverized coal, after fractionation, is burned to study the influence of mineral elements with different occurrence forms, such as water-soluble mineral elements, exchangeable io... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accelerated aging, electric field and partial discharges, mineral oil, power transformers
Power transformers are still equipment of primary importance within power grids. The recent paradigm changes registered in the field of energy require the interconnection of electrical grids of much larger areas, even up to the level of an entire continent. In this context, knowing the state of the electrical equipment and that of the power transformers is an essential aspect to ensure safe operation conditions. The present work is related to the vulnerability of the oil−paper insulation systems of power transformers to different aging factors and their quick degradation under certain conditions. In this regard, the study proposed in this paper considers the measurement of DC resistivity on mineral oil samples contaminated with small amounts of accelerated aging oil under the action of high-strength electric field and partial discharges. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Fuel Cells, heavy duty applications, hydrogen storage, mining trucks
The main objective of this work was to investigate the potential of hydrogen and fuel cells replacing diesel and internal combustion engines in the ultraclass haul trucks deployed in the mining sector. Performance, range, durability, and cost are the main criteria considered for comparing the two fuels and engine options. Fuel cell system (FCS) performance is characterized in terms of heat rejection, efficiency, and fuel consumption for a hybrid platform equivalent to a 3500 hp diesel engine operating on a representative open pit mining duty cycle. A hybrid platform was chosen because the heat rejection, with a constrained radiator frontal area, limits the maximum fuel cell-rated power by about 50% compared to that of the diesel truck. The hybrid powertrain was 81−88% more efficient than the diesel powertrain on the truck duty cycle. A liquid hydrogen storage system is required for an equal range or time between refilling, but the packaging remains a challenge. Fuel cell and battery du... [more]

Prediction of the Market of End-of-Life Photovoltaic Panels in the Context of Common EU Management System
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: end-of-life photovoltaic modules, photovoltaic waste, recycling, upcycling
A significant development of the photovoltaic market in the European Union has been observed recently. This is mainly due to the adopted climate policy and the development of photovoltaic technology, resulting in increased availability for consumers at lower prices. In the long run, increased installed PV capacity is associated with an increased amount of photovoltaic waste generated at the end of life. Since this waste belongs to the group of WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) waste, it is subjected to high recovery levels. Existing installations for the highly efficient recycling of PV panels are just proofs of concept. However, the situation will change in the near future, and it will be necessary to implement a full-scale waste management system dedicated to PV waste. The paper estimates mass streams of photovoltaic waste generated by 2050 in individual EU countries. Consequently, the characteristics of the European market of waste PV panels are considered together wi... [more]

A Comprehensive Review on Common-Mode Voltage of Three-Phase Quasi-Z Source Inverters for Photovoltaic Applications
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common-mode voltage, leakage current analysis, PV inverters, Quasi-Z-source network
Inverters with Quasi-Z-Source Networks (QZSN) provide DC-DC boosting and DC-AC conversion in a single stage. It offers reduced cost, complexity, and volume compared with the classical two-stage conversion system, which is composed of a boost converter followed by a Voltage-Source-Inverter (VSI). Further, QZSI provides superior conversion characteristics for single-stage grid-connected photovoltaic transformerless systems. However, the absence of galvanic isolation in these systems makes it possible to allow leakage current through these systems’ parasitic capacitances due to the high-frequency Common-Mode Voltage (CMV) generated by the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) nature of the inverter output voltages. As a result of this current, critical safety issues may arise with PV systems. Many PWM techniques have been presented in recent years for QZSIs. This paper is intended to provide a comprehensive analysis and review study of the characteristics of most of these PWM techniques in terms o... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Studies on the Effect of Lithium-Ion Batteries’ Shape and Chemistry on Heat Generation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: entropy change, heat generation, internal resistance, lithium-ion battery
Data sets of internal resistances and open-circuit voltage of a particular battery are needed in ANSYS Fluent program to predict the heat generation accurately. However, one set of available data, called Chen’s original, does not cover all types and shapes of batteries. Therefore, this research was intended to study the effects of shapes and polarization chemistries on heat generation in Li-ion batteries. Two kinds of material chemistries (nickel manganese cobalt oxide, NMC, and lithium iron phosphate, LFP) and three forms (cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic) were studied and validated with the experiment. Internal resistance was unique to each cell battery. Differences in shapes affected the magnitude of internal resistance, affecting the amount of heat generation. Pouch and prismatic cells had lower internal resistance than cylindrical cells. This may be the result of the forming pattern, in which the anode, cathode, and separator are rolled up, making electrons difficult to move. In... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas injection pressurization, multi-fractured horizontal well, numerical simulation, shale gas reservoir, well interference
Well interference has drawn great attention in the development of shale gas reservoirs. In the W shale gas reservoir, well interference increased from 27% to 63% between 2016 and 2019, but the gas production recovery of parent wells was only about 40% between 2018 and 2019. A numerical model of the W shale gas reservoir was developed for history matching, and the mechanisms of well interference and production recovery were analyzed. Sensitivity analysis about the effect of different parameters on well interference was carried out. Furthermore, the feasibility and effectiveness of gas injection pressure boosting to prevent interference were demonstrated. The results show that the main causes of inter-well interference are: the reservoir energy of the parent well before hydraulic fractures of the child well, well spacing, the fracture connection, etc. The fracture could open under hig... Keywords: cryogenic, LNG—freeze-out—heavy hydrocarbons, pseudocomponent—compositional characterization
The formation and the blockage of plant equipment such as heat exchangers by heavy hydrocarbon (HHC) solids is an inherent risk in cryogenic natural gas processing. The accuracy of the gas mixture’s compositional characterization significantly impacts the reliability of solid formaiton temperature predictions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, Europe, green hydrogen, hydrogen resource, mapping, Mediterranean basin, photovoltaic electrolysis
The EU’s hydrogen strategy consists of studying the potential for renewable hydrogen to help decarbonize the EU in a cost-effective way. Today, hydrogen accounts for less than 2% of Europe’s energy consumption. It is primarily used to produce chemical products. However, 96% of this hydrogen production is through natural gas, leading to significant amounts of CO2 emissions. In this paper, we investigated PV electrolysis H2 gas (noted H2(g)) production for mapping this resource at Europe’s scale. The Cordex/Copernicus RCPs scenarios allow for evaluating the impact of climate changes on the H2-produced mass and the equivalent energy, according to both extreme RCPs scenarios. New linear regressions are investigated to study the great dependence in H2(g) produced masses (kg·yr−1) and equivalent energies (MWh·yr−1) for European countries.
