Grzegorz Ostasz, Dominika Siwiec, Andrzej Pacana
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ant colony optimization (ACO), decision making, importance performance analysis (IPA), mechanical engineering, production engineering, quality of product
The current situation in the energy market contributes not only to the sales growth of photovoltaic panels (PV) but also to the intense search for possibilities for its improvement. The purpose of this research was to develop a model to determine, where possible, the most beneficial modifications to improve products. The model used combination techniques, i.e., the SMARTER method, brainstorming (BM), the 7 ± 2 rule, questionnaire, ant colony optimization (ACO), and importance-performance analysis (IPA). In addition, an algorithm supporting ACO was proposed in the MATLAB program. The test was carried out on PV and showed that it is possible to determine the way of product (PV) improvement by determining a sequence of modifications for product criteria states while simultaneously considering customers’ expectations. It was shown that each state of the short-circuit electricity and peak power was satisfactory for customers. It was necessary to modify the maximum current and idle voltage.... [more]
Gender Mainstreaming the European Union Energy Transition
Paula Carroll
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transition, energy trilemma, gender equality, gender mainstreaming
This paper explores gender dimensions of the energy transition in the European Union (EU). The EU has set out its ambitions for an equitable transition to clean secure energy. It has also set out it objectives for gender equality. In this paper, I implement a systematic literature review to explore the intersection of gender issues with the energy transition in the EU. There is little peer reviewed literature in this area. Analysis of academic papers shows most focus on social science rather than technical or engineering problems. A critical review of the grey literature including EU policies and reports shows that there is a disconnect between EU gender equality and clean energy plans and that gender has yet to be mainstreamed into the EU energy transition. This review identifies opportunities to mainstream gender into EU energy policies by linking to EU gender equality objectives, and connecting to gender-energy research themes.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC characteristics, alkaline electrolyzer, DC characteristics, Hydrogen, measurements, Modelling, SPICE
This paper presents the results of investigations into modeling the DC and dynamic characteristics of an alkaline electrolyzer. A model of the device under consideration is proposed in the form of analytical relationships in which the coefficients depend on the concentration of the potassium hydroxide solution contained in the electrolyzer under consideration. The correctness of the proposed model is verified by comparing the calculated and measured current−voltage characteristics and the dependence of the module of the impedance of the electrolyzer on the frequency obtained at different values of the electrolyte concentration. The dependence of the time needed to produce a given portion of hydrogen on the supply current and the electrolyte concentration is also presented. Good compliance with the calculation and measurement results is obtained over a wide range of voltage and current, frequency, and concentration of the electrolyte.

Keywords: data-driven models, internal combustion engine, Machine Learning, NOx emission, Surrogate Model
In this paper, a methodology based on data-driven models is developed to predict the NOx emissions of an internal combustion engine using, as inputs, a set of ECU channels representing the main engine actuations. Several regressors derived from the machine learning and deep learning algorithms are tested and compared in terms of prediction accuracy and computational efficiency to assess the most suitable for the aim of this work. Six Real Driving Emission (RDE) cycles performed at the roll bench were used for the model training, while another two RDE cycles and a steady-state map of NOx emissions were used to test the model under dynamic and stationary conditions, respectively. The models considered include Polynomial Regressor (PR), Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Random Forest Regressor (RF), Light Gradient Boosting Regressor (LightGBR) and Feed-Forward Neural Network (ANN). Ensemble methods such as Random Forest and LightGBR proved to have similar performances in terms of prediction... [more]
The Role of Micro Gas Turbines in Energy Transition
Reyhaneh Banihabib, Mohsen Assadi
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, energy transition, micro gas turbine, performance improvement
In the progressively rising decentralized energy market, micro gas turbines (MGT) are seen with great potential owing to their low emissions, fuel flexibility, and low maintenance. The current transformation in the landscape of electricity supply with an increasing share of fluctuant renewable energy resources and increasing complexity requires a reliable and energy-efficient power generation source to support the grid. In this scenario, small-scale power plants that are constructed based on micro gas turbines with up to 250 kW power range can play a substantial role in meeting the challenges of the modern electricity grid. Micro gas turbines provide a reliable and cost-effective power source with a quick load-following ability which can respond to demand peaks and compensate for intermittent renewable sources when they are not available. MGT units can work as a system together with renewables, or function as a stand-alone unit in off-grid operations. The features of micro gas turbines... [more]

Keywords: Brayton cycle with supercritical CO2, carbon capture rate, combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT), exergy analysis, Rankine cycle with transcritical CO2, sulfur capture rate
Blast furnace gas is the major combustible by-product produced in the steel industry, where iron ore is reduced by coke into iron. Direct combustion of blast furnace gas after simple treatment for power generation is a common utilization method nowadays. However, this method suffers from low efficiency and high carbon intensity. The use of gas-steam combined cycle is an excellent method to improve the efficiency of blast furnace gas for power generation. However, there is a problem of insufficient utilization of low product heat, and the addition of CCS system can further reduce the power efficiency. To solve these issues, a new blast furnace gas power generation system with a Brayton cycle with supercritical CO2 and a Rankine cycle with transcritical CO2 is proposed in this work. The new system is then thermodynamically simulated by Aspen Plus, after the sub-modules are validated. The effects of molar ratio of steam to carbon, selexol/CO2 mass ratio, compression ratio, turbine import... [more]

Keywords: e-fuels, electric vehicles, freight, heavy-duty, Hydrogen, renewables, RFNBO, Well-To-Wheels
The freight sector is expected to keep, or even increase, its fundamental role for the major modern economies, and therefore actions to limit the growing pressure on the environment are urgent. The use of electricity is a major option for the decarbonization of transports; in the heavy-duty segment, it can be implemented in different ways: besides full electric-battery powertrains, electricity can be used to supply catenary roads, or can be chemically stored in liquid or gaseous fuels (e-fuels). While the current EU legislation adopts a tailpipe Tank-To-Wheels approach, which results in zero emissions for all direct uses of electricity, a Well-To-Wheels (WTW) method would allow accounting for the potential benefits of using sustainable fuels such as e-fuels. In this article, we have performed a WTW-based comparison and modelling of the options for using electricity to supply heavy-duty vehicles: e-fuels, eLNG, eDiesel, and liquid Hydrogen. Results showed that the direct use of electric... [more]

Keywords: biofuel, Hermetia illucens, physical-chemical properties, renewable fuel
The use of insects as a biofuel feedstock has received limited research, and little is known about the fuel characteristics of insect biofuel. Fuel properties characterization can guide researchers focused on renewable fuel for the internal combustion engine. Therefore, this investigation focused on the physical-chemical properties modification of Hermetia illucens larvae oil (HILO) and diesel fuel blends, which could highly become an alternative renewable fuel. Five test fuel blends of HILO and diesel fuel were prepared at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% on a volume basis. Fuel properties such as chemical composition, density, viscosity, heating value, cetane number, and flash point of the test fuel blends were analyzed and compared to the diesel fuel. The main physical-chemical properties of HILO-diesel fuel blends were determined following the ASTM standards. Based on the results, the density, viscosity, cetane number, and flash point of the diesel fuel-HILO fuel blends were increased b... [more]

Keywords: decarbonization, electrolyzer, Hydrogen, hydrogen valley, Natural Gas, transmission network
Green hydrogen exploitation plays a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen, in fact, provides a number of key benefits for the energy system, due to its integrability with other clean technologies for energy production and consumption. This paper is aimed at presenting the project of recovery of an abandoned industrial area located in central Italy by developing a site for the production of green hydrogen. To this aim, the analysis of the territorial and industrial context of the area allowed us to design the project phases and to define the sizing criteria of the hydrogen production plant. The results of a preliminary cost−benefit analysis show that a huge initial investment is required and that, in the short term, the project is sustainable only with a very large public grant. On the other hand, in the long term, the project is sustainable, and the benefits significantly overcome the costs.

Keywords: battery management system, battery wear, energy storage system, frequency regulation, state of health
Frequency regulation (FR) using a battery energy storage system (BESS) has been expanding because of the growth of renewable energy. This study introduces the wear density function, which considers battery degradation factors such as the rate of current, temperature, and depth of discharge (DOD) to provide a precise lifespan prediction. Furthermore, an equivalent system model is developed to evaluate the FR performance of the BESS for various operating parameters. Finally, a quantitative tradeoff relationship between performance and battery lifecycle is derived from the analysis using operational data of the actual BESS for FR.

Keywords: quad-active-bridge series-resonant (QABSR), reactive power, single-stage AC–DC converter, smart battery charges (SBC), solid-state transformer (SST), vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Single-stage isolated and bidirectional (SSIB) AC−DC converters have a high potential for future solid-state transformers and smart battery chargers due to their reduced volume and high efficiency. However, there is a research gap for SSIB reactive power injection. This article introduces an SSIB three-phase AC−DC converter composed of three low frequency rectifiers linked by tiny film capacitors with a quad-active-bridge series-resonant (QABSR) DC−DC. A novel QAB modulation is proposed to solve three issues: (1) Three DC inputs with high ripple compensation, (2) active−reactive power injection, and (3) minimization of high-frequency (HF) transformers currents. The rectified grid voltages were modulated by time-variant duty ratio (DR) angles. In contrast, the DC source was modulated by a fixed DR (FDR) angle along with a phase-shift angle which changes according to the grid current amplitude. A constant HF current amplitude with minimum value was obtained. It is shown that the HF curre... [more]

Keywords: breakwater integrated, hybrid wave energy converters, laboratory tests, oscillating water column, overtopping devices, proof-of-concept
This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on a hybrid wave energy converter concept, the O2WC (Oscillating-Overtopping Water Column) device. The proposed device aims at providing an alternative to the classical OWC concept, storing part of the wave energy of the highly energetic sea states in a second chamber at atmospheric pressure, through overtopping phenomena. In this way, the maximum airflow rate and air pressure in the OWC chamber are reduced, possibly aiding the safe functioning of the air turbine, and allowing to exploit the excess of energy instead of dissipating it through by-pass valves. The performance of the device is investigated under different incident wave conditions, for different design parameters. The height of the overtopping threshold from the second chamber of the device which allows to maximize the performance has been selected. Results show that the decrease of the primary conversion efficiency of the OWC component of the device caused by the decrease... [more]

Keywords: converter-interfaced generation, frequency stability, power system inertia, power system stability, renewable power generators, rotor angle stability, voltage stability
The growing attention to environmental issues is leading to an increasing integration of renewable energy sources into electrical grids. This integration process could contribute to power system decarbonization, supporting the diversification of primary energy sources and enhancing the security of energy supply, which is threatened by the uncertain costs of conventional energy sources. Despite these environmental and economical benefits, many technological and regulatory problems should be fixed in order to significantly increase the level of penetration of renewable power generators, which are connected to power transmission and distribution systems via power electronic interfaces. Indeed, these converter-interfaced generators (CIGs) perturb grid operation, especially those fueled by non-programmable energy sources (e.g., wind and solar generators), affecting the system stability and making power systems more vulnerable to dynamic perturbations. To face these issues, the conventional... [more]

Keywords: cell performance deviation, electrical behaviors, lithium-ion battery, Modelling, voltage deviation
Owing to the variation between lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells, early discharge termination and overdischarge can occur when cells are coupled in series or parallel, thereby triggering a decrease in LIB module performance and safety. This study provides a modeling approach that considers the effect of cell variation on the performance of LIB modules in energy storage applications for improving the reliability of the power quality of energy storage devices and efficiency of the energy system. Ohm’s law and the law of conservation of charge were employed as the governing equations to estimate the discharge behavior of a single strand composing of two LIB cells connected in parallel based on the polarization properties of the electrode. Using the modeling parameters of a single strand, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was adopted to predict the discharge capacity and internal resistance distribution of 14 strands connected in series. Based on the model of the LIB strand to predic... [more]

Keywords: air-to-air heat pump (AAHP), energy simulations, ground source heat pump (GSHP), renewable energy sources, small modular house, zero-energy building (ZEB)
Energy security is becoming one of the most important issues today. Continuous increases in the prices of fossil fuels, firewood and wood pellets have become commonplace in many countries. One positive effect of this situation is the greater focus on the development of renewable energy technologies and the search for solutions to reduce the heat demands of residential buildings. The purpose of this paper is to present a small modular building that can be a response to the energy crisis and Ukraine’s wave of refugees in Poland. The results of the energy simulations performed in DesignBuilder software showed that this type of house has a primary energy demand of 139.35 kWh/m2. The calculations were performed for the climatic conditions of north-eastern Poland, assuming natural gas as the fuel. The use of a geothermal heat pump reduced this value to 90.14 kWh/m2. In order to achieve a zero primary energy balance, 23.76 m2 of PV panels and 4 m2 of solar thermal collectors should be install... [more]

Currently, there is a global challenge of water scarcity due to climate change, rising temperatures, and other factors. One way to address this growing global challenge is by implementing technology to treat polluted water by reusing it in areas such as irrigation, cooling, and energy production, based on bio-hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas can be produced by several methods, including dark fermentation. In this study, hydrogen gas was produced by 1L of sludge and Treated Effluent (TE) with several methods, using a reactor with a volume of 0.96 H2 L/L media. The Life-Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) process was used to study resource depletion, the ecosystem, and human impacts, and efforts were made to reduce the negative impacts by implementing several solutions. In this study, OpenLCA software was used as a tool for calculating the impacts, along with the ecoinvent database. Further analysis was carried out by comparing the LCIA with and without the use of solar energy. The results show tha... [more]

In the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system, the temperature polarization due to boundary layer formation limits the system performance. This study presents the experimental results and heat transfer analysis of a DCMD module coupled with a salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) under three different flow channel configurations. In the first case, the feed and permeate channels were both empty, while in the next two cases, the feed and permeate channels were filled with a porous spacer material. Two different spacer geometries are examined: 1.5 mm thick with a filament angle of 65°, and 2 mm thick with a filament angle of 90°. The study considers only the heat transfer due to conduction by replacing the hydrophobic membrane normally used in a DCMD module with a thin polypropylene sheet so that no mass transfer can occur between the feed and permeate channels. The Reynolds number for all three configurations was found to be between 1000 and 2000, indicating the flow regime wa... [more]

Keywords: airport, ground support equipment, microgrid, renewable energy technologies, resilience
With the rapid increment of power outages related to extreme natural disasters such as wildfires and severe storms, microgrids have the potential to enhance resilience locally. Traditionally, grid-connected microgrids are investigated from an economic perspective only, without focusing on resilience solutions benefits during grid interruptions. Hence, the presented work proposes a technical and economic evaluation of an airport grid-connected microgrid consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV), energy storage system, and diesel generator to enhance airport power resilience under different power interruption scenarios. A modified mixed-integer linear programming scheme was introduced to minimize the total annual operating cost of the proposed resilient system. The optimal resilient microgrid components sizing and dispatching were investigated with and without a monetary assigned value for resilience as a service. Moreover, the microgrid survivability during solar performance change was inve... [more]

Keywords: critical nitrogen displacement, in situ modification of oil shale, nitrogen insulation, thermal injection well, thermal insulation process
During in situ modification, inappropriate thermal insulation measures applied in annulus of injection wells will cause injection technical problems such as tremendous heat loss, wellhead lifting, serious casing damages, and corrosion. Continuous nitrogen injection into annulus is an effective measure to realize thermal insulation of injection wells. The critical displacement parameters of nitrogen injection in annulus are a key factor in the process of continuous nitrogen injection. However, the critical nitrogen injection rate under various working conditions, such as different well types, different wellhead steam parameters, and insulation pipe parameters, was not fully considered and studied. In this paper, the annular critical nitrogen injection displacement model was established based on the completion structure of injection well by applying the basic principles of heat transfer and fluid mechanics comprehensively. The influencing factors of critical nitrogen injection displaceme... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Energy and power demands for military operations continue to rise as autonomous air, land, and sea platforms are developed and deployed with increasingly energetic weapon systems. The primary limiting capability hindering full integration of such systems is the need to effectively and efficiently manage, generate, and transmit energy across the battlefield. Energy efficiency is primarily dictated by the number of dissimilar energy conversion processes in the system. After combustion, a Compression Ignition (CI) engine must periodically continue to inject fuel to produce mechanical energy, simultaneously generating thermal, acoustic, and fluid energy (in the form of unburnt hydrocarbons, engine coolant, and engine oil). In this paper, we present multiple sets of Shallow Artificial Neural Networks (SANNs), Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs), and K-th Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classifiers, capable of approximating the in-cylinder conditions and informing future optimization and control effo... Keywords: heavy oil, supercritical multi-thermal fluid, thermal recovery
Supercritical multi-thermal fluid is an emerging and efficient heat carrier for thermal recovery of heavy oil, but the generation of supercritical multi-thermal fluid and its feasibility in thermal recovery are rarely discussed. In this paper, generation and flooding experiments of supercritical multi-thermal fluid were carried out, respectively, for the generation and feasibility of supercritical multi-thermal fluid. During the experiment, the temperature and pressure in the reactor and sand-pack were monitored and recorded, the fluid generated by the reaction was analyzed by chromatography, and enthalpy of the reaction product and displacement efficiency were calculated, respectively. The experimental results showed that the change in temperature and pressure in the reactor could be roughly divided into three stages in the generation process of supercritical multi-thermal fluid. The higher the proportion of oil in the reactant, the higher the maximum temperature in the reactor. When... [more]
