Transient Hydrodynamic Behavior of a Pump as Turbine with Varying Rotating Speed
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, pump–turbines, stability characteristics, transient flow conditions, variable rotating speeds
The working condition of a centrifugal pump as a turbine (PAT) is often unsteady. The rotating speed of a PAT constantly varies as the flow and load change, resulting in transient hydrodynamic behaviors between different working conditions. During the transition, the PAT undergoes a severe change in performance and complicated internal flow structures. In previous work, the fixed rotating speed of a PAT was mostly considered using computational fluid dynamics. To investigate the transient behavior of a PAT, relevant simulation tools are developed to depict transient flow conditions, and the corresponding transient speed of the impeller is calculated. Both large and small fluctuation transitions are simulated for the practical application of the PAT. The simulated results are first verified by experiments. The results show that the rotating speed significantly affects the performance and stability of the PAT. The rapid increment in flow rate and rotating speed lead to large energy dissi... [more]

Speed of Sound Measurements of Biogas from a Landfill Biomethanation Process
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acoustic resonator, biogas, speed of sound
Biogas is drawing attention as it can be a solution both to increase the renewable energy for heat or power supply and to help achieve a decarbonized economy. In this work, the measurements of the speed of sound of three mixtures of biogas from the biomethanation plant of the municipal waste of Valdemingómez, Madrid (Spain), are presented. The measurements were performed using an acoustic resonator, which is able to measure the speed of sound of gas mixtures with a relative expanded uncertainty of approximately 0.08%. A virial-type equation was also applied to fit the experimental values of the speed of sound, and the heat capacities as perfect gas were derived with uncertainties below 0.8%. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those calculated with the reference equations of state for natural gas mixtures such as GERG-2008 and AGA8-DC92. For both equations, the average relative deviations were less than 0.02% and 0.2% for the speed of sound and the heat capacities,... [more]

Review of Vibroacoustic Analysis Methods of Electric Vehicles Motors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric drives, electric vehicles, noise, NVH, vibrations
The dynamic development of electromobility has resulted in new directions of research, one of which is the analysis of the noise of traction motors. The designs of the motors used in electric vehicles are relatively new and often modified. In addition, strong competition also forces an increase in the power generated per unit mass of the motor, often at the expense of weakening the mechanical structure. This may result in an increase in the noise level generated by the electric drive, so this issue should be analyzed at the motor design stage. Different construction and operating conditions in relation to industrial or railway traction motors make it necessary to constantly develop methods for the noise analysis of the motors for electric vehicles. The aim of this article is to review the methods used so far in an analysis of the noise generated by the motors for electric vehicles. Three main methods are used by the authors of this paper: the analytical method, the hybrid method using... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: albedo, bifacial photovoltaic, Ghana, photovoltaic systems, power system simulation, red soil, renewable energy simulation, solar energy
The annual yield of bifacial photovoltaic systems is highly dependent on the albedo of the underlying soil. There are currently no published data about the albedo of red soil in western Africa. In this study, the impact of the albedo of red soil in Ghana on the energy yield of bifacial photovoltaic systems is analysed. A bifacial photovoltaic simulation model is created by combining the optical view factor matrix with an electrical output simulation. For an exact simulation, the albedo of red soil at three different locations in Ghana is measured for the first time. The average albedo of every red soil is clearly determined, as well as the measurement span including instrumentation uncertainty; values between 0.175 and 0.335 were measured. Considering these data, a state-of-the-art bifacial photovoltaic system with an average of 19.8% efficient modules in northern Ghana can achieve an annual energy yield of 508.8 kWh/m2 and a bifacial gain of up to 18.3% in comparison with monofacial p... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery model, flow battery, Matlab, vanadium battery
In this paper, we propose a sophisticated battery model for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), which are a promising energy storage technology due to their design flexibility, low manufacturing costs on a large scale, indefinite lifetime, and recyclable electrolytes. Primarily, fluid distribution is analysed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) considering only half-cells. Based on the analysis results, a novel model is developed in the MATLAB Simulink environment which is capable of identifying both the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of VRFBs. Unlike the majority of published studies, the inherent characteristics of the flow battery, such as shunt current, ion diffusion, and pumping energy consumption, are considered. Furthermore, simplified charge transfer resistance (CTR) is taken into account based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement results. The accuracy of the model was determined by comparing the simulation results generated by the equiv... [more]

Natural Gas Prices in the Framework of European Union’s Energy Transition: Assessing Evolution and Drivers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: liquefied natural gas, Natural Gas, panel data, vector autoregressive model, vector error correction model
This study analyzes European natural gas (NG) prices since the eve of the 2008 financial crisis. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients associate prices with and without taxation, whereas a hierarchical clustering analysis clarifies similarities in NG pricing behavior. After performing econometric tests to ensure the satisfaction of classical hypotheses and identify a system of endogenous variables, structured unrestricted and restricted vector autoregressive models are applied to panel data composed of 34 spatial units and 31 units of time drawn from 2007−2022 to confirm the presence of short-term and long-term causal dependencies. The nonparametric analysis identifies three groups of countries that exhibit a differentiated pricing behavior. The parametric analysis reveals a significant and asymmetric short run relation, which is imposed by liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Nigeria on the logarithm of NG prices. However, the sign of coefficients associated with lagged LNG imp... [more]

A Discrete Electrical Model for Photovoltaic Solar Cells—d1MxP
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1M5P, d1MxP, photovoltaic technology, solar cell, solar cell equivalent model, solar energy
Solar cell equivalent circuit modelling is usually based on continuous I-V models, with a set of data obtained by analytical expressions. This work proposes an almost discrete novel mathematical method and correspondent electrical model, based on the I-V curve adjustment at every two adjacent points. It is based on the discretisation of any diode model behaviour, such as the 1M5P (also known as 1D5P) or the 1M7P (also known as 2D7P). For this reason, the model is named d1MxP, meaning that it is a discrete (d) model (1M) with x parameters (xP). The modelling methodology validation process uses experimental data already published in the literature. According to the presented results, the proposed method shows increased accuracy when compared to the 1M5P or 1M7P equivalent models. The accuracy on the maximum power point and fill factor determination is relevant, resulting in an improvement of up to 3.34% in the maximum power, up to 5.70% in its voltage and up to 8.20% in its current, for... An Improved Integrated Numerical Simulation Method to Study Main Controlling Factors of EUR and Optimization of Development Strategy
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: development strategy, main controlling factors, numerical simulation, shale gas
Gas reservoir numerical simulation is an important method to optimize the development strategy of shale gas reservoirs which has been influenced by the multi-stage fracture. The regular fracture network model was used to build a conventional numerical simulation, in which it was difficult to show the true situation of fracture propagation. However, the physical parameters not only affect the production, but also influence the stimulation effect; moreover, the quality of the fracturing effect also affects the production which causes the input and out parameters to be inaccurate. To solve this problem, the process simulation must be completed from geology to engineering to gas reservoir. The main controlling factors of production are identified with geological and engineering factors such as horizontal stage length, the volume of fracturing fluid, well spacing, production allocation, and proppant mass. Therefore, on the basis of the integrated simulation method of a hydraulic fracturing... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, energy saving-oriented, Floyd-NL algorithm, GA-LNS algorithm, multi-depot
This paper studies the distribution of emergency relief for electric vehicles (EVs), which considers energy saving, multi-depot, and vehicle routing problems with time windows, and the named energy saving-oriented multi-depot vehicle routing problem with time windows (ESMDVRPTW). Our aim is to find routes for EVs such that all the shelter demands are fulfilled during their time windows and the total cost traveled by the fleet is minimized. Biosolids have been traditionally used as a beneficial resource in the agricultural industry. However, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) threaten their reuse due to concerns of toxicity, bioaccumulation, and increased regulations on acceptable CEC concentrations in biosolids. The thermal treatment of biosolids has the potential to destroy/mineralize these contaminants as well as transform the biosolids into valuable biochar.
