A Substation-Based Optimal Photovoltaic Generation System Placement Considering Multiple Evaluation Indices
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: nondominated sorting in genetic algorithm II, on-load tap changer, optimal PVGS placement, photovoltaic generation system, system loss, voltage quality
The placement of the photovoltaic generation system (PVGS) and operation of the on-load tap changer (OLTC) should have great impacts on the system loss and voltage quality, which are the main concerns of the distribution operator. Considering these multiple evaluation indices and other constraints, this paper proposed a substation-based optimal PVGS placement and OLTC operation model. The objective function that was used to evaluate the optimal PVGS placement and OLTC operation consists of a minimization of system loss and voltage quality. The model’s constraints contain the voltage and line flow limits, voltage deviations, voltage unbalance, etc. Uncertainties of the load and irradiance are also included in the model. A nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) is used to solve this multi-objective optimization problem. Comparisons of the substation-based and feeder-based planning are also studied in this paper. The test results demonstrate the substation-based planning coul... [more]

A Data-Driven Reduced-Order Model for Estimating the Stimulated Reservoir Volume (SRV)
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data-based modeling, hydraulic fracturing, Machine Learning, reduced order model (ROM), stimulated reservoir volume (SRV)
The main goal of hydraulic fracturing stimulation in unconventional and tight reservoirs is to maximize hydrocarbon production by creating an efficient stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) around the horizontal wells. To zreach this goal, a physics-based model is typically used to design and optimize the hydraulic fracturing process before executing the job. However, two critical issues make this approach insufficient for achieving the mentioned goal. First, the physics-based models are based on several simplified assumptions and do not correctly represent the physics of unconventional reservoirs; hence, they often fail to match the observed SRVs in the field. Second, the success of the executed stimulation job is evaluated after it is completed in the field, leaving no room to modify some parameters such as proppant concentration in the middle of the job. To this end, this paper proposes data-driven and global sensitivity approaches to address these two issues. It introduces a novel work... [more]

Defining an Annual Energy Output Ratio between Solar Thermal Collectors and Photovoltaic Modules
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: annual energy output ratio, decision-making tool, global energy scenario, PV & solar thermal, solar electricity, solar heat
Photovoltaics (PV) and Solar Thermal (ST) collectors are sometimes competitors, as investment capacity, energy demand, and roof space are limited. Therefore, a ratio that quantifies the difference in annual energy output between ST and PV for different locations is useful. A market survey assessing the average price and performance both in 2013 and 2021 was conducted, showing a factor of 3 cell price decrease combined with a 20% efficiency increase, while ST showed negligible variation. Winsun simulations were conducted, and the results were plotted on the world map. Despite variations due to local climate, the ratio of energy production (ST/PV) increases at lower latitudes mainly due to (a) higher air temperature increasing ST output but decreasing the PV output; (b) solar radiation reducing ST efficiency to zero while having a minor impact on PV efficiency. The ratio was calculated for several ST operating temperatures. For latitudes lower than 66°, the ratio of a flat plate at 50 °C... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, Energy Efficiency, energy system reliability, pay for performance
Utilities are increasingly interested in integrating energy efficiency and demand response measures as a strategic approach that aims to achieve an increasingly reliable, dynamic, and integrated electric system. The concepts of energy efficiency (EE), demand response (DR), and system reliability (ESR) have been mainly studied from a different perspective, dealing only with the interaction between EE and DR and between EE and ESR. This paper aims to improve knowledge and demonstrate the validity of EE interventions (EEIs) through the use of a tool for evaluating the benefits of energy efficiency measures (EEMs) in the environmental sphere and in terms of DR and ESR. In order to evaluate this interaction, a quantitative method is proposed and validated on real results in an Italian case scenario, taking into account the analysis of smart meters data for residential users located in southern Italy in Calabria. Based on the collected data, an aggregation of users was evaluated with real ho... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC–DC converter, Energy Storage, multi-input multi-output, step-up converter
The synchronous integration of numerous input and output loads is possible with multi-input (MI) and multi-output (MO) DC−DC converters. In this paper, the non-isolated DC−DC converter described, which has a high step-up capability and multiple ports for outputs and inputs for energy storage system (ESS) applications. The voltage level of the converter is changeable. The capacity to provide the large voltage increases with a low duty cycle portion, the ease with which each duty cycle can be controlled, and minimal power losses are all advantages of the proposed design. The proposed system offers advantages for applications requiring energy storage. In the continuous conduction mode (CCM), the operation principles, steady-state evaluation, and extracting of the voltage and current coefficients are performed. The supply sources can be inserted or withdrawn without causing a cross-regulation issue in the proposed converter. Ultimately, the functionality of the proposed structure is examin... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric buses, electric vehicle charging, electromobility, fast charging, harmonic distortion, power quality, public transport
The subject of this study was a distribution substation that feeds 14 fast DC chargers (80 kW) located at the bus depot in Lublin, Poland. The voltage variations were determined to be within the PN-EN 50160 standard limit values (±10% Un). There were several events registered when 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th voltage harmonics were above the PN-EN 50160 limit during the charging of the electric buses. The obtained maximum 10 min average values of the total voltage harmonic distortion (THD) were 3.36%, 2.27%, and 2.89% for the first, second, and third phase, respectively, i.e., below the limit value of 8% required by PN-EN 50160. Due to the exceedance of the 6th voltage harmonic, the PN-EN 50160 requirements were not met.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy transition, GIS, photovoltaic, renewable-energy sources, technical potential, Wind
In order to achieve climate goals and limit the global temperature rise, an increasing share of renewable-energy sources (RESs) is required. However, technologies for the use of RESs need to be integrated into the landscape and ecological heritage to ensure a fully sustainable energy transition. This work aims to develop a scalable technique for integrating the estimation of rooftop PV and wind potential into spatial planning, providing a framework to support decision-makers in developing energy policies. The methodology is applied to the minor Sicilian islands, which are characterised by significant environmental and landscape constraints. The methodology is used to identify the areas eligible for the installation of onshore wind turbines and the usable roof surfaces for the installation of PV systems. It is shown that the available technical potential of rooftop PV installations could ensure a higher production than the actual consumption on 13 of the 14 islands studied. Nevertheless... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COP, Ebsilon, geothermal energy, heat pump, low-enthalpy geothermal, renewable energy sources, thermodynamic cycle design
The development of district heating systems results in a search for alternative heat sources. One of these is low-enthalpy geothermic energy, more available than traditional geothermal energy. However, utilization of these resources is difficult, due to the low quality of the produced heat. To utilize them, the heat pump system can be used. Such a system was designed for this case study of a city in a region of the Polish Lowlands. The data necessary for the design came from the project of the borehole and operational parameters of the existing heating plant. Four heat pump-cycle designs were proposed, modeled, and simulated using Ebsilon software. Afterward, the designs were optimized to achieve maximum coefficient of performance (COP) value. As a result of the simulation, the efficiency of each design was determined and the seasonal COP value was calculated with the annual measured heat demand of the plant. The system based on the cascade design proved the most efficient, with a seas... [more]

Potentials of Renewable Energy Sources in Germany and the Influence of Land Use Datasets
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 3D building models, energy system modeling, land-use data, potential analysis, solar-photovoltaics, Wind
Potential analyses identify possible locations for renewable energy installations, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic arrays. The results of previous potential studies for Germany, however, are not consistent due to different assumptions, methods, and datasets being used. For example, different land-use datasets are applied in the literature to identify suitable areas for technologies requiring open land. For the first time, commonly used datasets are compared regarding the area and position of identified features to analyze their impact on potential analyses. It is shown that the use of Corine Land Cover is not recommended as it leads to potential area overestimation in a typical wind potential analyses by a factor of 4.7 and 5.2 in comparison to Basis-DLM and Open Street Map, respectively. Furthermore, we develop scenarios for onshore wind, offshore wind, and open-field photovoltaic potential estimations based on land-eligibility analyses using the land-use datasets that were pro... Close-distance coal seams are widely distributed in China, and the mining of overlying coal seams leads to floor damage. To grasp the properties and the fracture spans of the damaged main roof in the underlying coal seam, combining the calculation of the floor damage depth with rock damage theory and the formulas for calculating the first and periodic weighting intervals of the damaged main roof and the instability conditions of the damaged key blocks are obtained. Three interaction stability mechanics models are proposed for key blocks with different properties of the upper and lower main roof, and the instability conditions of the lower damaged key blocks are obtained when the fracture lines overlap. When combined with a specific example, the field monitoring verified the calculation results. The research results are as follows: (1) The first and periodic weighting intervals, horizontal thrust between blocks, and critical load of instability of the damaged main roof are significantly... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion simulation, detonation, lithium-ion battery, thermal runaway, venting gas
With the rapid development of lithium-ion battery technology, powertrain electrification has been widely applied in vehicles. However, if thermal runaway occurs in a lithium-ion battery pack, the venting gas in the cells will spread and burn rapidly, which poses a great threat to safety. In this study, a 2D CFD simulation of the combustion characteristics of cell venting gas in a lithium-ion battery pack is performed, and the possibility of detonation of the battery pack is explored. First, a numerical model for the premixed combustion of venting gas is established using a two-step combustion mechanism. The combustion characteristics are then simulated in a 2D channel for the stoichiometric combustible mixture, and the variations in the flame velocity and pressure increment in the flow channel are analyzed. Next, the effects of the initial conditions inside the battery pack, including the pressure, temperature, and excess air coefficient, on the flame propagation process and pressure v... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Rotor−Stator Interaction in a Large Prototype Pump−Turbine in Turbine Mode
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: field measurement, numerical simulation, pump–turbine, rotor–stator interaction (RSI)
In recent years, large-capacity, high-head pump−turbine units have been developed for pumped storage power plants to effectively utilise water energy and store large amounts of electricity. Compared with the traditional Francis turbine unit, the radial distance between the trailing edge of the guide vanes and the leading edge of runner blades of high-head pump−turbine unit is smaller, so the rotor−stator interaction and the corresponding pressure fluctuations in the vaneless space of pumped storage units are more intense. The pressure fluctuations with high amplitudes and high frequencies induced by rotor−stator interaction (RSI) become the main hydraulic excitation source for the structures of the unit and may cause violent vibration and fatigue damage to structural components, and seriously affect the safe operation of the units. In this paper, the RSI of a high-head pump−turbine in turbine mode of operation is studied in detail by means of site measurement and full three-dimensional... [more]
