Keywords: innovative behaviors, internal relationships, organizational factors of commitment to innovation, RES, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Innovation is one of the successful and competitive advantage factors for SMEs in the dynamically changing environment of the RES industry. For SMEs, innovation is driven by a number of factors, such as the size of the enterprise, the scope of activity, innovation capability, strategy, and environmental conditions. Organizations’ commitment to innovation is another important factor. This is especially true for SMEs with strong social bonds, meaning that every employee of the company is, to some extent, involved in the innovation process and influences the organization’s opinion. The goal of the paper is to assess the impact of organizational determinants of commitment to innovation on innovative behavior in SMEs in the RES industry. The paper is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part explains the relevance of organizational determinants of commitment to innovation and how they translate to innovative behavior in SMEs. The empirical part presents an analysis of the results... [more]

Keywords: damage-detection techniques, online monitoring, sensor, wind energy, wind turbine blade, wind turbine blade damage
With global warming and the depletion of fossil energy sources, renewable energy is gradually replacing non-renewable energy as the main energy in the future. As one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources, the safety and reliability of wind energy have been paid more and more attention. The size of modern wind turbines is becoming larger and larger. As the main component of wind turbines to capture energy, the blade is often damaged by various complex environments and irregular loads. Therefore, the health monitoring and damage identification of wind turbine blades have become a main research focus. At present, in addition to the overview of various detection methods of wind turbine blades, there is a lack of comprehensive classifications and overviews of the main damage types, damage-generation mechanisms, and basic principles of the damage-detection technology of wind turbine blades. In this paper, firstly, the common fault types of wind turbine blades, such as trailing edge... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation analysis, electrode capacity, electrode SOC estimation, lithium-ion battery, SOC estimation, state of charge, state of health, three-electrode battery, three-electrode battery pack, variable current charging
The anode state of charge (SOC) and degradation information pertaining to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for understanding battery degradation over time. This information about each cell in a battery pack can help prolong the battery pack’s life cycle. Because of the limited observability, estimating the anode state and capacity fade is difficult. This task is even more challenging for the cells in a battery pack, as the current through the individual cell is not constant when cells are connected in parallel. Considering these challenges, this paper presents a novel method to set up three-electrode cells by using the battery’s casing as a reference electrode for building a three-electrode battery pack. This work is a continuation of the authors’ previous research. An unknown input observer (UIO) is employed to estimate the anode SOC of an individual battery in the battery pack. To ensure the stability of a defined Lyapunov function, the UIO parameter matrices are expressed as... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexible photovoltaic modules, Li-ion battery sizing, power conversion efficiency, power loss model, resistive heating pad, switch-mode power converter, wearable electronics
An active heating system has been developed for application in smart clothing for mountain rescuers. It uses a set of sensors and is aimed at gathering necessary data for the elaboration and testing of an automatic control algorithm. The system is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, which can be additionally charged from flexible PV modules. The article presents an estimation of this system’s power supply requirements and its energy budget. Since the system’s maximum operation time strongly depends on the efficiency of its main power converter, the design of the latter was based on a model enabling power loss estimation in its particular components. Characteristics ultimately measured on a prototype showed a high agreement with simulations. Furthermore, five different arrangements of PV modules were studied in order to find the most effective one. The system was tested in real conditions for the three most promising PV module configurations.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cointegration test, thermal coal price, variance decomposition
As the world’s largest coal consumer, China’s coal consumption in 2021 was 2934.4 million tons of standard coal. Thermal coal occupies an important position in the coal market and industry system, as an important raw material in the power industry, steel industry and other industries. The price of thermal coal in 2021 was at its highest level in a decade, and reached a historical level of about 2587.5 yuan per ton in October 2021. In the same month, the government intervened in the thermal coal price, which fell 51.9% by the end of the year under the influence of the policy. In previous studies, there has been little research on thermal coal and the impact of the variable “policy” on the thermal coal price. Thus, this paper analyzed the factors that affect the price fluctuation of thermal coal, and the impact of economic policy uncertainty on the thermal coal price. The cointegration test and forecast-error variance decomposition (FEVD) are adopted in this study. Our results show that... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Advanced Limited Search Strategy (ALSS), Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), metaheuristic algorithms, Partial Shading (PS), Photovoltaic (PV), solution reduction
Photovoltaic (PV) arrays are gaining popularity for electricity generation due to their simple and green energy production. However, the power transfer efficiency of PV varies depending on the load’s electrical properties, the PV panels’ temperature, and the insolation conditions. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is a method formulated as an optimization problem that adjusts the PV output voltage to deliver maximum power to the load based on these criteria (maximum power in the P-V curve). MPPT is a convex optimization problem when the Sun’s rays completely cover the PV surface (full insolation). Several power points are formed in the Power vs. Voltage (P-V) curve, rendering MPPT as a non-convex problem during incomplete insolation (partial shadowing) on the PV surface due to barriers such as passing clouds or trees in the path of the Sun and the PV’s surface. Unfortunately, mathematical programming techniques, such as gradient ascent and momentum, are not good optimization candidat... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: natural gas hydrate (NGH), safety, solid–liquid separator
Deep water shallow natural gas hydrate (NGH) is a kind of clean energy and has entered the commercial exploitation stage. However, it produces a lot of seabed sediment in the process of large-scale mining, which not only easily causes undersea natural hazards, but also leads to pipeline equipment blockage and high energy consumption in the mining process. A downhole solid−liquid separator can effectively separate natural gas hydrate from sand and backfill sand in situ, which can effectively solve this problem. In this paper, the safety of a downhole solid−liquid separator desander under torsion conditions is determined by a test method. A numerical simulation method was used to simulate the tension and pressure of the downhole solid−liquid separator, and a modal simulation analysis and erosion analysis of the downhole solid−liquid separator were carried out. The experiments showed that the downhole solid−liquid separator could withstand 30 KN/m of torque, and a numerical simulation ana... [more]

Keywords: 2030 scenario, groundwater pumping, LCOE, photovoltaic applications, Tenerife
Groundwater pumping systems using photovoltaic (PV) energy are increasingly being implemented around the world and, to a greater extent, in rural and electrically isolated areas. Over time, the cost of these systems has decreased, providing greater accessibility to freshwater in areas far from urban centers and power grids. This paper proposes a novel sustainability analysis of the groundwater pumping systems in Tenerife Island as an example of a medium-size isolated system, analyzing the current status and the business-as-usual projection to 2030, considering the water reservoirs available and the final use of water. The 2030 projection focused on the PV deployment, evaluation of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and the availability of the groundwater resource. HOMER software was used to analyze the LCOE, and ArcGIS software was used for the visual modeling of water resources. As a result, the average LCOE for a purely PV installation supplying electricity to a pumping system... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensation, cross flow, heat exchanger, heat transfer, vertical tubes, water vapor
The paper is concerned with water vapor condensation on vertical pipes. The vertical position of pipes in a condenser is not discussed very often. Its application has a number of particularities in terms of the numerical determination of heat transfer. In the first stage of this paper, the authors focus on the experimental identification of heat transfer during vapor condensation on vertical pipes with a diameter of 14.0 × 1.0 mm. The pipes are placed in a narrow channel and the steam flows around them in a perpendicular direction. Two channel widths were tested, i.e., 20.0 and 24.0 mm. In the second stage, numerical modelling (CFD) is used for a detailed identification of the vapor velocity fields near the pipes. In the third stage, the results of the experimental measurements and numerical modelling are compared with data published by various authors. There are studies in the literature dealing with axial flow around vertical pipes; however, the associated results are based on condit... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CH4/CO2 replacement, distribution characteristics, gas hydrate
CH4/CO2 replacement is of great significance for the exploitation of natural gas hydrate resources and CO2 storage. The feasibility of this method relies on our understanding of the CH4/CO2 replacement efficiency and mechanism. In this study, CH4/CO2 replacement experiments were carried out to study the distribution characteristics of CH4 and CO2 in hydrate-bearing sediments during and after replacement. Similar to previously reported data, our experiments also implied that the CH4/CO2 replacement process could be divided into two stages: fast reaction and slow reaction, representing CH4/CO2 replacement in the hydrate-gas interface and bidirectional CH4/CO2 diffusion caused replacement, respectively. After replacement, the CO2 content gradually decreased, and the methane content gradually increased with the increase of sediment depth. Higher replacement percentage can be achieved with higher replacement temperature and lower initial saturation of methane hydrate. Based on the calculati... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon chemical structure, char, coal pyrolysis, Raman spectroscopy
To address the problem of variability in in situ Raman spectroscopy for determining the chemical structure of chars, the rationality of Raman’s original peak spectrum fitting method, the influence of objective lens magnification, particle size, and number of measurements on peak shape and characteristic parameters were investigated. The results show that the Raman original peak spectrum of char is fitted by five peaks and the goodness of fit is best when the D3 peak is fitted by a Gaussian curve. The intensity of the peak spectrum and stability of the characteristic parameters of the Raman spectroscopy are related to the objective lens magnification. For a relatively large objective lens magnification, the Raman peak spectrum intensity is increased and the coefficient of variation in the characteristic parameters is accordingly reduced. As particle size increases, the characteristic parameters AG/AAll that characterize the perfect graphite structure decrease and the characteristic para... [more]

Keywords: cascading outage, contingency, hierarchical clustering, K-means algorithm, PCA, steady-state security assessment
This paper investigates a conceptual, theoretical framework for power system contingency analysis based on agglomerative hierarchical clustering. The security and integrity of modern power system networks have received considerable critical attention, and contingency analysis plays a vital role in assessing the adverse effects of losing a single element or more on the integrity of the power system network. However, the number of possible scenarios that should be investigated would be enormous, even for a small network. On the other hand, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are well known for their remarkable ability to deal with massive data. Rapid developments in AI have led to a renewed interest in its applications in many power system studies over the last decades. Hence, this paper addresses the application of the hierarchical clustering algorithm supported by principal component analysis (PCA) for power system contingency screening and ranking. The study investigates the hiera... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy plan, decision-making model, energy supply optimization, nearly zero-energy building, renewable energy resources, smart city, utility retail pricing
The energy industry has been trying to reduce the use of fossil fuels that emit carbon and to proliferate renewable energy as a way to respond to climate change. The attempts to reduce carbon emissions resulting from the process of generating the electric and thermal energy needed by a building were bolstered with the introduction of the concept of nZEB (nearly zero-energy building). In line with such initiatives, the South Korean government made it mandatory for new buildings to have an nZEB certificate as a way to promote the supply of renewable energy. The criteria for Energy Independence Rate, which is one of the nZEB certification criteria in South Korea, is to maintain the share of renewable energy as at least 20% of the primary energy sources for the building. For a new building in South Korea to have an nZEB certificate, it is required to establish an energy plan that would allow the building to meet the Energy Independence requirement. This optimally reflects the cost of insta... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, fractal dimension, fracture network evolution, hydraulic fracturing, tight sandstone
The tight sandstone reservoir in the Qianfoya formation of well PL-3 of the Puguang gas field in Sichuan, China, obtained a high-yield gas flow after a volume fracturing treatment. However, the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV), fracture morphology, scale and formation law still remain unclear. Based on particle flow discrete-element theory in this paper, we carried out a few trials of the Brazilian splitting test, uniaxial compression and triaxial compression of rock mechanics. Meanwhile, the research also testified to the conversion relationship between macroparameters and microparameters, established the numerical simulation on hydraulic fracturing through PFC2D discrete element software, and finally analyzed the influence of difference coefficients on the fracturing effect, in terms of different in-situ stresses. The conclusions are as follows: firstly, the influence of in-situ stress is essential for the direction, shape and quantity of fracture propagation, and the fractures gene... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: composite blade, large-scale wind turbine, spar optimization
Mass and cost tradeoffs by deploying three optimized spars, made of all-glass, hybrid and all-carbon composites, applied to a publicly available large-scale composite blade of 100 m in length for a 13.2 MW wind turbine, are explored. The blade mass and cost minimizations are calculated for two design load cases, generating the worst aerodynamic loads for parked and rotating rotor blades, while meeting the stiffness, strength, stability and resonance design requirements, as recommended by the wind turbine standards. The optimization cases are formulated as a single-objective, multi-constraint optimization problem, while taking into account the manufacturability of hybrid spars in particular, and it is solved using a genetic algorithm method. The blade mass lowers in the range of 8.1−13.3%, 18.5−20.7% and 25.7−26.4% for the optimized all-glass, hybrid and all-carbon spars, respectively, while the cost decreases for the optimized all-glass spars only. The cost increases in a range of 1.2−... [more]

Keywords: DC ultra-fast charging, electric vehicle, power electronic converter, solid-state transformer
The emergence of DC fast chargers for electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) has prompted the design of ad-hoc microgrids (MGs), in which the use of a solid-state transformer (SST) instead of a low-frequency service transformer can increase the efficiency and reduce the volume and weight of the MG electrical architecture. Mimicking a conventional gasoline station in terms of service duration and service simultaneity to several customers has led to the notion of ultra-fast chargers, in which the charging time is less than 10 min and the MG power is higher than 350 kW. This survey reviews the state-of-the-art of DC ultra-fast charging stations, SST transformers, and DC ultra-fast charging stations based on SST. Ultra-fast charging definition and its requirements are analyzed, and SST characteristics and applications together with the configuration of power electronic converters in SST-based ultra-fast charging stations are described. A new classification of topologies for DC SST-based ultra-f... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active-clamp converter, DC/DC converter, electrical vehicle, forward-flyback converter, integrated transformer, planar transformer, wide input and output voltage range
This paper proposes an active-clamp forward-flyback (ACFF) converter with an integrated planar transformer for wide-input voltage and high-output current applications, such as low-voltage direct-current (LDC) converters in electric vehicles. An integrated planar transformer that consists of a forward-flyback transformer, single primary winding, and efficient structure of secondary windings is adopted for the proposed converter, and since this transformer is implemented with a common four-layer printed circuit board (PCB) winding, a high power density and low cost of the proposed converter can be achieved. In addition, due to the low leakage inductance induced by the planar transformer, a reduced commutation period can be achieved, and it is possible to increase the switching frequency resulting in low volume of transformer. Although the integrated planar transformer has relatively high conduction loss, the active-clamp topology can significantly reduce the conduction loss on switches c... [more]
Exploring the Influence of the Parameters’ Relationship between Reliability and Maintainability for Offshore Wind Farm Engineering

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: availability, maintainability, MTBF, MTTF, reliability
The two main research goals of this study are to develop a relationship diagram between the parameters of reliability and maintainability and to investigate the impact of reliability and maintenance on engineering design costs. In this study, we use the theory of reliability and maintainability parameters to derive the relationship between the parameters using block diagrams. Compared with onshore wind farms, offshore wind farms have higher reliability requirements, but the maintenance degree of offshore wind farms is lower due to environmental factors. This study proposes an important concept of reliability and maintenance for value engineering, which can help system design engineers and project engineers integrate reliability concerns in the design phase and operation and maintenance phase.

Man-Hoe Kim
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined ORC–VCC system, COP, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), second-law efficiency, thermal efficiency, vapor compression cycle (VCC)
This study investigates a combined power generation and cooling system comprising an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and a vapor compression cycle (VCC). Thermodynamic analyses of the system were conducted for two operation modes, i.e., the basic ORC mode and the ORC−VCC mode, using six different working fluids: R245fa, R114, R600, R142b, R152a, and R1234yf. The results showed that the thermal efficiency of the combined ORC−VCC system was almost twice that of the basic ORC system. The effects of thermodynamic parameters, such as the turbine inlet temperature and pressure and the condensing temperature, on the system performance were discussed. The second-law efficiency, cooling capacity, and coefficient of performance were addressed by varying the condensing temperature.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive, drag-lift hybrid type, energy utilization, self-starting, starting wind speed, vertical axis wind turbine
In recent years, with the continuous development of new energy, how to efficiently use wind energy has received more and more market attention. Due to cost advantages, the development of small wind turbines is accelerating. Among them, the design and research of the airfoil design and research of the lift vertical axis wind turbine has matured, but because of the aerodynamic characteristics of the lift airfoil structure, it is impossible to start itself at low wind speed, resulting in the waste of low wind speed energy. Although the drag wind turbine has good self-starting performance, the wind energy utilization efficiency in the high-speed state is inefficient. Each has its own unique shortcomings, which directly affects the marketization of small wind turbines. In order to solve these problems, this paper presents a drag-lift hybrid type wind turbine structure based on an NACA0018 symmetrical airfoil, which can adaptively change the blade shape. This design can keep the blade in the... [more]

Keywords: Machine Learning, rain erosion, Springer model, wind turbine
Rain erosion on wind turbine blades raises considerable interest in wind energy industry and research, and the definition of accurate erosion prediction systems can facilitate a rapid development of solutions for blade protection. We propose here the application of a novel methodology able to integrate a multibody aeroelastic simulation of the whole wind turbine, based on engineering models, with high-fidelity simulations of aerodynamics and particle transport and with semi-empirical models for the prediction of the damage incubation time. This methodology is applied to generate a parametric map of the blade regions potentially affected by erosion in terms of the fatigue life of the coating surface. This map can represent an important reference for the evaluation of the sustainability of maintenance, control and mitigation interventions.
