Performance Assessment of an Air-Type BIPVT Collector with Perforated Baffles through Indoor and Outdoor Experiments
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-type BIPVT (building-integrated photovoltaic with thermal recovery), electrical and thermal performance, indoor and outdoor experiments, performance assessment
The performance of air-type PVT and BIPVT collectors has been extensively studied. As a system that generates heat and power, PVT collector testing has some particularities especially when using air as a heat recovery fluid and a building-integrated design (BIPVT). The electrical and thermal experimental performance of such collectors are currently being evaluated using in-house methods or PV and/or solar thermal collector standards. The use of a wide range of methods, testing conditions and experimental setups makes it difficult not only to compare the performance of different designs, but also to have confidence in the results obtained. This study evaluates the performance of an air-type BIPVT collector with in-channel perforated baffle plates for heat transfer enhancement designed for a building-integrated façade. As part of a joint research project between Korea and Canada, the proposed collector’s performance was evaluated through indoor (Canada) and outdoor experiments (Korea). L... [more]

BTEX Emissions in the Logistics of Middle Distillates: Diesel Oil
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air pollution, BTEX emission, diesel oil
Besides technological processes; logistics; and the use of petrol and light solvents, which are widely known as pollutants, the sources of BTEX hydrocarbon contributing to air pollution may also include other petroleum products and fuels that feature higher boiling points and that have not yet been associated with this issue. In this study, the contents of benzene; toluene; ethylbenzene; and o-, m-, and p-xylene were evaluated in 25 commercial samples of diesel oils; the gaseous phase in thermodynamic equilibrium with liquid diesel oil at 40 °C was then evaluated. Based on the experimental results, it was found that benzene concentration in the gaseous phase is five to more than fifteen times higher than the limits set by regulations for benzene concentration in the air at a work place (1.6 mg/m3) and cannot be compared with the limits set by regulations for annual average basal levels of benzene concentration in the air (5 µg/m3). The research revealed that diesel oil is a potential s... [more]

A Robust Kalman Filter-Based Approach for SoC Estimation of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Smart Homes
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lithium-ion battery, robust Kalman filter, smart home, SoC estimation
Battery energy systems are playing significant roles in smart homes, e.g., absorbing the uncertainty of solar energy from root-top photovoltaic, supplying energy during a power outage, and responding to dynamic electricity prices. For the safe and economic operation of batteries, an optimal battery-management system (BMS) is required. One of the most important features of a BMS is state-of-charge (SoC) estimation. This article presents a robust central-difference Kalman filter (CDKF) method for the SoC estimation of on-site lithium-ion batteries in smart homes. The state-space equations of the battery are derived based on the equivalent circuit model. The battery model includes two RC subnetworks to represent the fast and slow transient responses of the terminal voltage. Moreover, the model includes the nonlinear relationship between the open-circuit voltage (OCV) and SoC. The proposed robust CDKF method can accurately estimate the SoC in the presence of the time-varying model uncertai... [more]

Comprehensive Optimisation of Biodiesel Production Conditions via Supercritical Methanolysis of Waste Cooking Oil
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, optimisation, response surface methodology, supercritical methanolysis, waste cooking oil
Biodiesel has been established as a promising alternative fuel to petroleum diesel. This study offers a promising energy conversion platform to valorise high acidity waste cooking oil (WCO) into biodiesel in a single-step reaction via supercritical methanol. Carbon dioxide (CO2) has been used as a co-solvent in the reaction with a catalytic effect to enhance the production of biodiesel. This work provides an in-depth assessment of the yield of four fatty acids methyl esters (FAME) from their correspondent triglycerides and fatty acids. The effects of four independent process variables, i.e., methanol to oil (M:O) molar ratio, temperature, pressure, and time, have been investigated using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Four quadratic models have been developed between process variables and the yield of FAMEs. The statistical validation of the predicted models has been performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Numerical optimisation has been employed to predict the optimal condit... [more]

Fluid−Structure Coupling Analysis of the Stationary Structures of a Prototype Pump Turbine during Load Rejection
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fluid–structure coupling, head cover, load rejection, pump turbine, stress concentration
During the load rejection transient process of the prototype pump turbine units, the pressure fluctuations of the entire flow passage change drastically due to the rapid closing of guide vanes. The extremely unsteady pressure distribution in the flow domains including the crown chamber and the band chamber may cause a strong vibration on the stationary structures of the unit and result in large dynamic stress on the head cover, stay ring and bottom ring. In this paper, the numerical fluid dynamic analysis of the entire flow passage of a reversible prototype pump turbine during load rejection was performed. The flow characteristics in the runner passage, crown chamber, band chamber, seal labyrinths and balance tubes are analysed. The corresponding unsteady flow-induced dynamic behaviour of the head cover, stay vanes and bottom ring was investigated in detail. The analysed results show that the total deformation of the inner edge of the head cover closed to the main shaft is larger than... [more]

Influence of the Catenary Distributed Parameters on the Resonance Frequencies of Electric Railways Based on Quantitative Calculation and Field Tests
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric railway, field test, railway, resonance frequency, traction network parameters
High-order harmonic resonance is a key issue in the traction power supply systems (TPSS) of electric railways for safe operation. The effective evaluation of the resonance frequency is critical for taking measures to suppress harmonic resonance. In this paper, the influence of the distributed parameters of traction networks on resonance frequencies based on accurate calculation is proposed. The quantitative assessments of the distributed impedance and admittance are investigated. Furthermore, the theoretical calculation is directly verified using field tests at a high voltage level equal to 25 kV. The results show that the resonance frequencies of the TPSS are mainly affected by the distributed parameters, including the self-admittance and self-impedance of the contact wires, and the self-admittance of the positive feeders. In addition, the admittance connected in parallel has a greater effect than the series-connected impedance. The calculation method is also adapted to TPSS connected... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: counterweight characteristic, heat transfer characteristic, hydrodynamic characteristic, ocean thermal energy, power generation
Smart Float is a new multi-modal underwater vehicle, a tool for ocean observation and detection, whose performance is limited by its underwater voyage distance and endurance like most underwater vehicles. The utilization of marine energy provides an ideal way to overcome these limitations. In this paper, an external ocean thermal energy power generation module is developed for Smart Float, which can be used for multiple times of energy storage and power generation and is expected to be further applied to small and medium-sized underwater vehicles. The integration of the proposed device will cause changes in the counterweight characteristic, hydrodynamic characteristic, and heat transfer characteristic of the vehicle, which are deeply analyzed in this study, and adaptive modification solutions are proposed according to the analysis results. Finally, a prototype of Smart Float integrating the proposed device was deployed in the South China Sea to perform a sea trial, to test its performa... [more]

Reclaiming the Windy Commons: Landownership, Wind Rights, and the Assetization of Renewable Resources
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commons, energy transition, landownership, political economy, rent, wind rights
The ‘second phase’ of the energy transition involves large-scale rollout of renewables, raising wider questions about arrangements for the management and ownership of such resources and how costs and benefits should be distributed. Ideas and practices such as ‘community energy’ and ‘prosumption’ capture the potential for more decentralised systems of ownership and control inherent in renewable energy technologies. However, until now, ownership and control of the key biophysical resources (e.g., wind, wave, solar, geothermal) underpinning the transition have received surprisingly little attention, given the potential for wealth creation and issues of justice that underpin their use. This paper explores this issue using the idea of ‘wind rights’, which highlights the numerous social actors who have rights or claims to use and benefit from wind resources. Key among these are landowners who are silently enclosing the ‘windy commons’ to extract ‘wind rents’ from monopoly property rights. Th... [more]

Scenarios to Decarbonize Austria’s Energy Consumption and the Role of Underground Hydrogen Storage
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Austria’s energy consumption, hydrogen usage, underground hydrogen storage
The European Union is aiming at reaching greenhouse gas (GHG) emission neutrality in 2050. Austria’s current greenhouse gas emissions are 80 million t/year. Renewable Energy (REN) contributes 32% to Austria’s total energy consumption. To decarbonize energy consumption, a substantial increase in energy generation from renewable energy is required. This increase will add to the seasonality of energy supply and amplifies the seasonality in energy demand. In this paper, the seasonality of energy supply and demand in a Net-Zero Scenario are analyzed for Austria and requirements for hydrogen storage derived. We looked into the potential usage of hydrogen in Austria and the economics of hydrogen generation and technology and market developments to assess the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). Then, we cover the energy consumption in Austria followed by the REN potential. The results show that incremental potential of up to 140 TWh for hydropower, photovoltaic (PV), and wind exists in Austria.... [more]

Renovation of Modernist Housing Developments in the Pursuit of Modernity for Well-Being and Clean Energy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: “Renovation Wave”, architecture, CO2 emissions, energy-efficiency, well-being
The research concerns renovation variants for modernist housing estates built in Szczecin, Poland during 1918−1925 and in Bialystok, Poland during 1950−1990. These buildings are now substandard in many ways; functionally, aesthetically, technically, and ecologically they do not fulfil the current energy efficiency standards. Some of them have architectural heritage, so not all energy-saving technologies can be applied. Renovations must include energy-saving improvements and the use of renewable energy sources. Equally important is the well-being of residents, meaning the quality of the apartments should be increased. The aim of this research was to analyze the renovation options in terms of energy efficiency and well-being criteria, as well as in relation to the cultural value of the buildings. The simplified energy calculation method was used to check the present buildings’ energy demands to compare them with retrofitting results. Three retrofitting possibilities were considered: low-... Analysis of Smart Meter Electricity Consumption Data for PV Storage in the UK
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, consumer classification, NPV, PV, smart meter data
Solar PV and battery energy storage (BES) costs for domestic consumers are constantly diminishing. On top of this, the end of the Feed-in-Tariff programme has significantly increased interest in combined PV + BES systems. In this paper, we explore the economics of domestic PV + BES systems, extending the current literature on the topic via the use of a large smart meter dataset and a demographic comparison. Predictably, time-varying tariffs and higher electricity prices generally strengthen the economic arguments for PV + BES systems, however our consumption data yields a wide range of Net Present Values for different consumers. In terms of demographics, we find that batteries are more favourable for more affluent households due to their larger consumption levels, though profitability becomes more uniform if the batteries are tailored to individual households. This is an important point for policy, since it indicates that if PV + BES systems become widely profitable this is unlikely to... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, control strategy, hydrodynamics, second order wave forces, semi-submersible foundation, vertical axis wind turbine
Considering the aero-hydro-mooring-control coupled performance of a floating Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), the numerical model of the floating helical VAWT system is established, and the fully coupled simulation program of the floating helical VAWT is developed. The aerodynamic load of the wind turbine system is calculated using the unsteady BEM model, and the hydrodynamic load is calculated using the 3D potential theory. The floating foundation is considered as a rigid body, and the blades and tower are considered as flexible bodies. Based on the Kane method of a multi-body system, the dynamic responses of the VAWT could be solved in the time domain. A variable speed control model considering efficiency and load is established to match the rotating speed with the wind speed, and it could maintain the target output power under the influence of turbulent wind and large-scale movement of the floating foundation. The control strategy of limiting the target speed change rate and low-p... [more]

Computationally Efficient State-of-Charge Estimation in Li-Ion Batteries Using Enhanced Dual-Kalman Filter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cubature Kalman filter (CKF), electric vehicle (EV), extended Kalman filter (EKF), Li-ion battery, state of charge (SOC)
This paper proposes a state-of-charge estimation technique to meet highly dynamic power requirements in electric vehicles. When the power going in/out the battery is highly dynamic, the statistics of the measurement noise are expected to deviate and maybe change over time from the expected laboratory specified values. Therefore, we propose to integrate adaptive noise identification with the dual-Kalman filter to obtain a robust and computationally-efficient estimation. The proposed technique is verified at the pack and cell levels using a 3.6 V lithium-ion battery cell and a 12.8 V lithium-ion battery pack. Standardized electric vehicle tests are conducted and used to validate the proposed technique, such as dynamic stress test, urban dynamometer driving schedule, and constant-current discharge tests at different temperatures. Results demonstrate a sustained improvement in the estimation accuracy and a high robustness due to immunity to changes in the statistics of the process and meas... [more]

The Thermal Response of a Packed Bed Thermal Energy Storage System upon Saturated Steam Injection Using Distributed Temperature Sensing
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advection, condensation, diffusion, distributed temperature sensing, steam, thermal energy storage
The effectiveness of a thermal energy storage (TES) system is typically characterized with the help of thermal stratification or temperature gradients along the direction of heat injection, which is typically the flow direction of heat transfer fluid. The steepness of temperature gradients are a direct indicator of the effectiveness or efficiency of the heat storage or dispatch process. The temperature gradient evolution along the packed bed of ceramic particles upon saturated steam injection is presented in this work. Distributed temperature sensing based on optical frequency domain reflectometry was deployed in a packed bed of ceramic particles to capture the thermal front evolution in the axial direction. The physical processes accompanying steam injection in packed beds are complex due to phase change, transitioning two-phase flow, and changes in condensate accumulation. Therefore, the variation of thermal response of the TES system for various steam injection flow rates was experi... [more]

Impact of Window Frames on Annual Energy Consumption of Residential Buildings and Its Contribution to CO2 Emission Reductions at the City Scale
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: city scale, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, thermal transmittance, window frame
Windows are among building components that have the strongest effect on thermal load. They play a significant role in heat loss in buildings because they usually have a largely higher thermal conductance than other components of the building envelope. Although many studies have highlighted the relevance of heat transfer through frames and aimed to improve their thermal performance, poorly insulated aluminum frames (thermal conductivity of aluminum is 160 W/m·K, while that of polyvinyl chloride [PVC] is 0.17 W/m·K) are still in use in Japan. Therefore, the U-values of different window frames were calculated, and annual thermal loads were calculated according to the window configurations, including the frame, glazing, and cavity. We focused on standard residential buildings in Japan with a total floor area of 120.6 m2 (two-story building), and the number of newly built houses and the application rate of window configurations in 2019 were surveyed to estimate the CO2 emissions by regions.... Optical Wireless Power Transmission Using a GaInP Power Converter Cell under High-Power 635 nm Laser Irradiation of 53.5 W/cm2
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: beam expander, GaInP, long-distance power transmission, optical wireless power transmission, solar cell
Optical wireless power transmission (OWPT) system is a technology that supplies energy from remote locations, having some features such as long-distance transmission, high directivity, and no electromagnetic noise interference. This study investigated the optical transmission efficiency and photoelectric conversion efficiency with a transmission distance of 10 m using GaInP power converter cells with a small area of 2.40 × 2.40 mm2 and a 635 nm high-power laser over 50 W/cm2. As a result, we achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 44.7% under 6.7 W/cm2 (0.14 W) and 37.2% under 53.5 W/cm2 (1.1 W) irradiation. These results suggested that W-class optical wireless power transmission could be realized by expanding the converter cell area. Additionally, it was found that the reductions of the divergence angle of the laser and the heat generation of the power converter cell were critical issues for further lengthening the distance and increasing the power.

Direct Power Control Based on Modified Sliding Mode Controller for a Variable-Speed Multi-Rotor Wind Turbine System Using PWM Strategy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct power control, doubly fed asynchronous generator, modified SMC technique, total harmonic distortion, variable-speed multi-rotor wind turbine system
A robust and improved control scheme of a variable speed multi-rotor wind turbine (MRWT) system with a doubly fed asynchronous generator (DFAG) is displayed in this work. In order to improve the performances and effectiveness of the traditional direct power control (DPC) strategy of the DFAG, a new kind of sliding mode controller (SMC) called modified SMC (MSMC) is proposed. The most important advantage of the DPC-MSMC strategy is to reduce the power ripples and improve the quality of the currents provided to the grid. In addition, to control the rotor inverter, a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is used. The proposed DPC-MSMC strategy was modeled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulation results showed that the ripples in stator currents, active and reactive powers and torque were considerably reduced for the proposed DPC-MSMC strategy compared to the traditional DPC. Additionally, the proposed DPC-MSMC method works excellently to reduce the total harmonic dis... [more]

Estimating the Subsurface Thermal Conductivity and Its Uncertainty for Shallow Geothermal Energy Use—A Workflow and Geoportal Based on Publicly Available Data
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, geothermal potential mapping, GSHP, thermal conductivity, uncertainty
Ground-source heat pumps with borehole heat exchangers (BHE) are an efficient and sustainable option to heat and cool buildings. The design and performance of BHEs strongly depend on the thermal conductivity of the subsurface. Thus, the first step in BHE planning is often assisted by a map representing the thermal conductivity of a region created from existing data. Such estimates have high uncertainty, which is rarely quantified. In addition, different methods for estimating thermal conductivity are used, for example, by the German federal states, resulting in incomparable estimates. To enable a consistent thermal conductivity estimation across state or country borders, we present a workflow for automatically estimating the thermal conductivity and its uncertainty up to user-defined BHE lengths. Two methods, which assess the thermal conductivity on different scales, are developed. Both methods are (1) based on subsurface data types which are publicly available as open-web services, an... Study on Engine Performance and Combustion System Optimization of a Poppet-Valve Two-Stroke Diesel Engine
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion chamber profile, combustion system, poppet-valve two-stroke diesel engine, spray angle
Two-stroke engines have higher power density than traditional four-stroke engines, and therefore are suitable for engine downsizing. In this work, a four-stroke single-cylinder diesel engine is modified for two-stroke operation, and the combustion system is designed and optimized using a 3D simulation. Three different combustion chamber profiles and injection spray angles are compared to determine an optimized combustion system. The engine test results show that the two-stroke engine equipped with the newly designed combustion system is able to achieve the same effective power output at a much lower speed than the original four-stroke engine, as well as obtain a better indicated thermal efficiency. This indicates that the poppet-valve two-stroke engine could be an effective technical approach for engine downsizing.
