Wind Farms and Humidity
Kevin A. Adkins, Adrian Sescu
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atmosphere–land interaction, atmospheric boundary layer, atmospheric observations, humidity, large-eddy simulation, moisture, unmanned aircraft systems, wind turbine, wind turbine array
Several investigations have shown that enhanced mixing brought about by wind turbines alters near-surface meteorological conditions within and downstream of a wind farm. When scalar meteorological parameters have been considered, the focus has most often centered on temperature changes. A subset of these works has also considered humidity to various extents. These limited investigations are complemented by just a few studies dedicated to analyzing humidity changes. With onshore wind turbines often sited in agricultural areas, any changes to the microclimate surrounding a turbine can impact plant health and the length of the growing season; any changes to the environment around an offshore wind farm can change cloud and fog formation and dissipation, among other impacts. This article provides a review of observational field campaigns and numerical investigations examining changes to humidity within wind turbine array boundary layers. Across the range of empirical observations and numeri... [more]
The Development of Citizen-Installed Renewable Energy Capacities in Former Eastern Bloc Countries—The Case of Poland
Valeria Jana Schwanitz, Tadeusz Józef Rudek, Wit Hubert, August Hubert Wierling
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: citizen engagement, energy cooperatives, energy transition, prosumer, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
We confront empirical data on citizen-led renewable energy capacities in Poland with results obtained from a meta-theoretical, empirical analysis of the national energy system. We elicit and rank essential disabling and enabling factors that explain the current low level of citizen energy in Poland. Altogether, we estimate the contributions of individual and collective prosumers as amounting to about 3.2 GW, with PV installations contributing more than 90%. Most activities are rather recent and come from individual prosumers. The factors with the greatest explanatory power are connected with decades of a rigid, centralized Polish energy system going hand in hand with social, regulatory, and technical lock-ins. Strikingly, factors connected with the heritage of, and transition from, the socialist period are less important, but they do explain why substantially more contributions originate from individuals compared to collective prosumers. Our results show that the currently rather small... [more]
Pitfalls of Using Biomarker Maturity Parameters for Organic Matter Maturity Assessment Suggested by Coal Hydrous Pyrolysis
Mengsha Yin, Haiping Huang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomarker isomerization ratio, biomarker precursors, coal hydrous pyrolysis, heating rate, hopane, maturity, sterane
Crude oil maturity assessment is a vital goal for petroleum geochemistry, and equally important is the exploration of maturity indicators of sufficient credibility. While most molecular proxy parameters have been extensively used and have provided some useful insights; the component ratios approach is somewhat limited in validity regarding oil maturity characterization for variable reasons. Novel thermal trends of hopanes and steranes were observed in a series of hydrous pyrolysates of an immature coal (0.49 %Ro) generated at eight target temperatures ranging from 250−375 °C (measured vitrinite reflectance of 0.71−0.91 %Rm), which−further substantiated this idea. Expelled oil and extractable bitumen were combined as the total soluble organic material (tSOM) for each pyrolysis experiment to mitigate the effects of primary expulsion fractionation. While bitumen extracted from the original coal—the 250 °C tSOM—the 275 °C tSOM (0.49−0.73 %Rm) sequence recorded normal increases in C31 αβ-ho... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2-expanded hexane extraction, free fatty acid concentration, oil solubility, oil yield, phosphorus concentration, rice bran
The performance of CO2-expanded hexane in the vapor-liquid two-phase region was examined to extract phosphorus-free bio-oil from rice bran. Previously, it was found that in the uniform liquid phase region, it is difficult to maintain the phosphorus concentration at a stable and low level when the CO2 mole fraction changed slightly. To overcome this issue, the dependences of the phosphorus and free fatty acid concentrations, the oil solubility, and the oil yield on the CO2 mole fraction in the CO2-expanded hexane were measured at 25 °C, 5.1−5.2 MPa, and at a CO2 mole fraction of 0.88−0.94 in the two-phase region. Thus, a relatively constant phosphorus concentration of <10 ppm was maintained in the extracted oil, which was ~1/50 of that in the oil extracted by hexane, thereby satisfying the European unified standard for biodiesel fuel. Furthermore, a high oil yield exceeding that of hexane extraction was maintained over all CO2 mole fractions. Moreover, the oil solubility in the CO2-e... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Capture, clean gas technology, gas-steam turbine, spray-ejector condenser, wet combustion chamber, zero-emission CO2 power plant
Reduction of greenhouse gases emissions is a key challenge for the power generation industry, requiring the implementation of new designs and methods of electricity generation. This article presents a design solution for a novel thermodynamic cycle with two new devices—namely, a wet combustion chamber and a spray-ejector condenser. In the proposed cycle, high temperature occurs in the combustion chamber because of fuel combustion by pure oxygen. As a consequence of the chemical reaction and open water cooling, a mixture of H2O and CO2 is produced. The resulting working medium expands in one turbine that combines the advantages of gas turbines (high turbine inlet temperatures) and steam turbines (full expansion to vacuum). Moreover, the main purpose of the spray-ejector condenser is the simultaneous condensation of water vapour and compression of CO2 from condensing pressure to about 1 bar. The efficiency of the proposed cycle has been estimated at 37.78%. COM-GAS software has been used... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conversion system model, heat-pipe-cooled microreactor, KRUSTY experiment, solid-core heat transfer model, TAPIRSD code
Heat-pipe-cooled microreactors (HPMR) use a passive high-temperature alkali metal heat pipe to directly transfer the heat of solid core to the hot end of the intermediate heat exchanger or thermoelectric conversion device, thus avoiding a single point failure. To analyze and evaluate the transient safety characteristics of an HPMR system under accident conditions, such as heat pipe failure in the core or a loss of system heat sink and other accidents, a previously developed model for transient analysis of a heat-pipe-cooled space nuclear reactor power system (HPSR) was improved and validated in this study. The models improved mainly comprise: (1) An entire 2-D solid-core heat transfer model is established to analyze the accident conditions of core heat pipe failure and system heat sink loss. In this model, radial and axial Fourier heat conduction equations are used to divide the core into r-θ direction control volumes. The physical parameters of the material in the control volume are c... [more]

Victor P. Stein, Hans-Jakob Kaltenbach
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large-eddy simulation, roughness, turbulent boundary layer, wind turbine wake
The ability of high-fidelity computational fluid mechanics simulation to quantitatively predict the influence of ground roughness on the evolution of the wake of a three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine model is tested by comparison with wind tunnel measurements. The approach consists of the implicit approximate deconvolution large-eddy simulation formulation of Hickel et al., (2006), that is, for the first time, combined with a wall-stress model for flow over rough surfaces and with the actuator line approach (ALM) for modeling of the rotor. A recycling technique is used for the generation of turbulent inflow that matches shear exponents α=0.16 (medium roughness) and α=0.32 (high roughness) and turbulence level of the reference experiments at hub height. Satisfactory agreement of the spectral content in simulation and experiment is achieved for a grid resolution of 27 cells per rotor radius. Except for minor differences due to neglecting nacelle and tower in the simulation the LES... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery management systems, bidirectional converters, fuzzy logic controller, hybrid energy storage system, lead-acid battery, lithium-ion battery
Conventional vehicles, having internal combustion engines, use lead-acid batteries (LABs) for starting, lighting, and ignition purposes. However, because of new additional features (i.e., enhanced electronics and start/stop functionalities) in these vehicles, LABs undergo deep discharges due to frequent engine cranking, which in turn affect their lifespan. Therefore, this research study seeks to improve LABs’ performance in terms of meeting the required vehicle cold cranking current (CCC) and long lifespan. The performance improvement is achieved by hybridizing a lead-acid with a lithium-ion battery at a pack level using a fully active topology approach. This topology approach connects the individual energy storage systems to their bidirectional DC-DC converter for ease of control. Besides, a battery management strategy based on fuzzy logic and a triple-loop proportional-integral (PI) controller is implemented for these conversion systems to ensure effective current sharing between lea... Decarbonizing Natural Gas: A Review of Catalytic Decomposition and Carbon Formation Mechanisms
Sirui Tong, Bin Miao, Lan Zhang, Siew Hwa Chan
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst decomposition of methane, energy transition, solid carbon, turquoise hydrogen
In the context of energy conservation and the reduction of CO2 emissions, inconsistencies between the inevitable emission of CO2 in traditional hydrogen production methods and eco-friendly targets have become more apparent over time. The catalytic decomposition of methane (CDM) is a novel technology capable of producing hydrogen without releasing CO2. Since hydrogen produced via CDM is neither blue nor green, the term “turquoise” is selected to describe this technology. Notably, the by-products of methane cracking are simply carbon deposits with different structures, which can offset the cost of hydrogen production cost should they be harvested. However, the encapsulation of catalysts by such carbon deposits reduces the contact area between said catalysts and methane throughout the CDM process, thereby rendering the continuous production of hydrogen impossible. This paper mainly covers the CDM reaction mechanisms of the three common metal-based catalysts (Ni, Co, Fe) from experimental... [more]

Keywords: conductivity, dopant content, powder synthesis, shape molding, solid oxide cells, YSZ, yttria-stabilized zirconia
This study is an effort to cover and interconnect multiple aspects of the fabrication of the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) from powder preparation to a solid electrolyte suitable for utilization in solid oxide cells. Thus, a series of YSZ electrolytes was prepared, differing in the content of the Y2O3 dopant and in the method of preparation. Combustion synthesis along with the thermal decomposition of precursors was used for YSZ powder synthesis with a dopant content of 8 to 18 mol.%. Post-synthesis treatment of the powder was necessary for achieving satisfactory quality of the subsequent sintering step. The morphology analyses of the YSZ powders and sintered electrolytes produced proved that small particles with a uniform size distribution are essential for obtaining a dense electrolyte. Furthermore, the conductivity of YSZ electrolytes with different Y2O3 contents was examined in the temperature range of 400 to 800 °C. The lowest conductivity was found for the sample with the high... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, doubly fed induction generator, frequency response, generalized predictive control, islanded operation, long-range predictive control, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind energy
The power system is moving away from the centralized generation paradigm. One of the current trends is the microgrid concept, where loads, small generators and renewable energy resources (RERs) that are in close proximity are controlled as one entity. Microgrids also allow for an increase in power availability as they can continue to supply electric power to loads even in the absence of a connection to the main grid. During the transition to islanded operation, microgrids may be subject to frequency disturbances caused by the power imbalance between load and generation. When microgrids contain high shares of renewable energy, the challenge is significantly higher due to the control strategies that aim to maximize power production, which are typically applied to RERs and render them insensitive to grid changes. Therefore, new control strategies need to be developed to enable the participation of RERs in the support of the frequency response. This work proposes a predictive control strat... [more]

Yuxin Zhou, Zhengkun Wang, Zongfa Xie, Yanan Wang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: immersion cooling, lithium-ion battery, pressure drop, temperature, thermal management
Lithium-ion batteries will generate a large amount of heat during high-rate charging and discharging. By transferring the heat to the environment in time, the batteries can be kept in a suitable temperature range. This allows them to work normally, prolongs their cycle life, and reduces the risk of thermal runaway. Immersion cooling is a simple and efficient thermal management method. In this paper, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) with immersion cooling was designed by immersing the lithium-ion cells in the non-conductive coolant—dimethyl silicone oil. The electric−thermal coupled model was adopted to obtain the heat production and temperature distribution of the cell during discharging, and the performance of the system was obtained by numerical calculation. It was found that, compared with natural cooling, immersion cooling could significantly reduce both the maximum temperature (MAT) of the cell and the temperature of the tabs during the 3C discharging process. However, t... [more]

Keywords: AC-DC hybrid grid, evaluation indicators, penetration capacity, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transient stability
With increasingly more renewable energy being integrated into the AC-DC hybrid grid, the grid shows more complex dynamic characteristics due to the mutual coupling of HVDC and renewable energy. To evaluate the renewable energy resources’ penetration capacity of the AC-DC hybrid grid, this paper proposes an evaluation method of the renewable energy resources’ penetration capacity of an AC-DC hybrid grid, which considers both economy and safety. Firstly, indicators are proposed for an evaluation of the economy and safety of the AC-DC hybrid grid integrated with renewable energy, where both static and transient stability indicators are considered. Secondly, to maximize the renewable energy penetration capacity and minimize the network loss, an optimization model of the renewable energy penetration capacity of the AC-DC hybrid grid is established considering the static and transient stability constraints. Then, a heuristic solution method for solving the renewable energy penetration capaci... [more]
Predicting Adsorption of Methane and Carbon Dioxide Mixture in Shale Using Simplified Local-Density Model: Implications for Enhanced Gas Recovery and Carbon Dioxide Sequestration
Yu Pang, Shengnan Chen, Hai Wang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption selectivity, calculation workflow, CH4/CO2 competitive adsorption, multicomponent SLD model
Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage have attracted global focus because CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming. Recently, injecting CO2 into shale gas reservoirs is regarded as a promising technique to enhance shale gas (i.e., methane (CH4)) production while permanently storing CO2 underground. This study aims to develop a calculation workflow, which is built on the simplified local-density (SLD) model, to predict excess and absolute adsorption isotherms of gas mixture based on single-component adsorption data. Such a calculation workflow was validated by comparing the measured adsorption of CH4, CO2, and binary CH4/CO2 mixture in shale reported previously in the literature with the predicted results using the calculation workflow. The crucial steps of the calculation workflow are applying the multicomponent SLD model to conduct regression analysis on the measured adsorption isotherm of each component in the gas mixture simultaneously and using the determined key regress... An Analytical Heat Transfer Model in Oil Reservoir during Long-Term Production
Minsoo Jang, Troy S. Chun, Jaewoo An
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat loss to the fluid flowing, Joule–Thomson effect, non-isothermal, reservoir heat transfer, steady-state, system heat transfer
Contrary to the assumption of previous researchers, the radial temperature in the petroleum reservoir during production is non-isothermal because several heat transfer mechanisms change the radial temperature in reservoirs. As there have been few studies, especially after long-term production, this work derives steady-state analytic solutions considering the long-term production. It also presents sensitivity analysis with the various production conditions to investigate heat transfer between the producing fluids and surrounding formations during fluids flowing (hereafter, system heat transfer) in a steady-state. For oil production, the system heat transfer induces a cooling effect on the radial temperature in the reservoir, reducing the temperature rise due to the Joule−Thomson (J−T) heating. This cooling effect increases with the larger Peclet number, however, the relative contribution of the cooling effect to the radial temperature change diminishes. The equations explain that the co... Spray Behavior, Combustion, and Emission Characteristics of Jet Propellant-5 and Biodiesel Fuels with Multiple Split Injection Strategies
Hyun Min Baek, Hyung Min Lee
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion, emissions, JP-5, multiple injection, spray behavior
This study focuses on an analysis of the spray behavior, combustion, and emission characteristics of jet propellant-5 (JP-5) and biodiesel fuels with single-injection timing and multiple split injection strategies in a common rail direct injection (CRDI) single-cylinder diesel engine system. The analysis includes visualization of the spray and combustion. Multiple split injection strategies (e.g., double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple) were considered by equally distributing the fuel injection amount within the single-injection. Injection of biodiesel has a delayed start (0.2 ms) as well as shorter spray tip penetration compared with JP-5. As the fuel injection timing was approached to the top dead center (TDC), the engine performance and combustion efficiency improved. Retarding the injection timing contributed to an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) (JP-5: max. 2.6% up, BD100: max. 1.5% up) and a decrease in carbon monoxide (CO) (JP-5: max. 93% down, BD100: max. 91% down) and nitro... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bending moment envelope, excess pore water pressure, liquefaction potential, offshore wind turbines
With the increasing construction of large-scale wind turbines in seismically active coastal areas, the survivability of these high-rated-power offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in marine and geological conditions becomes extremely important. Although research on the dynamic behaviors of OWTs under earthquakes has been conducted with consideration of the soil-structure interaction, the attention paid to the impact of earthquake-induced seabed liquefaction on OWTs supported by large-diameter monopiles remains limited. In view of this research gap, this study carries out dynamic analyses of a 10 MW OWT under combined wind, wave, and earthquake loadings. This study uses a pressure-dependent multisurface elastoplastic constitutive model to simulate the soil liquefaction phenomenon. The results indicate that the motion of the large-diameter monopile leads to more extensive soil liquefaction surrounding the monopile, specifically in the zone near the pile toe. Moreover, compared with earthquake l... [more]

Keywords: degradation resistance, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, state of health estimation, Unscented Kalman Filter
The evolution of performance degradation has become a major obstacle to the long-life operation of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The feasibility of employing degradation resistance to assess the State of Health (SOH) is proposed and verified. In addition, a real-time Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) based SOH estimation method is further proposed to eliminate the disturbance of calculating the SOH directly utilizing measurement and electric balance model. The results of real-time SOH estimation with an UKF under constant and varying load conditions demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the SOFC performance degradation assessment method.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensation, liquefaction, Natural Gas, supersonic separator
In this study, a mathematical model for the supersonic condensate flow of natural gas to understand its condensation process in a supersonic separator has been proposed. The effects of export back pressure, inlet temperature, and inlet pressure on the condensation parameters were investigated. The results indicate that the condensation position moves forward with the increase in the inlet pressure and the decrease in the inlet temperature. A method for determining the optimal range of operating parameters (export back pressure, inlet temperature, and inlet pressure) for the supersonic separator is proposed. Within the optimal back pressure range, the region of extreme Mach number in the device should be at the inlet of the straight pipe section after the separation gap, and extreme value distribution areas of low temperature, condensation nucleation, and humidity should be between the nozzle expansion section and the inlet of the straight pipe section. It is important to choose a highe... [more]
Combustion Stability Control Based on Cylinder Pressure for High Efficiency Gasoline Engines

Keywords: combustion stability, exhaust gas recirculation, hybrid gasoline engine, in-cylinder pressure sensor
Minimizing fuel consumption of passenger car vehicles can be achieved thanks to hybridization of the powertrain associated with innovative engine technologies. To feed the new high compression ratio combustion systems, air system cutting-edge technologies are used to manage air and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) quantities. Increasing EGR allows us to improve engine consumption in the high efficiency area, but it comes at the cost of a loss of stability. It is then of primary importance to be able to manage the engine near the stability limit to minimize fuel consumption. So far, the stability limit is managed in open-loop thanks to conservative calibration of the EGR quantity, implying efficiency losses. This paper addresses the combustion stability feedback control using in-cylinder pressure sensors. From this information, an indicator of stability is proposed, offering a more robust behavior in transient situations than state-of-the-art indicators. This indicator is then used to fe... [more]

Keywords: last two stages, steam turbine, thermodynamic loss, water droplets resistance loss, wetness loss
Wetness loss of a steam turbine seriously affects the security of the unit when operating in deep peak regulation. To obtain the distribution characteristics of the high wetness loss area under different working conditions, especially low-load conditions, the last two stages of the low-pressure cylinder (LPC) of a 600 MW steam turbine were simulated using the non-equilibrium condensation model proposed in this study. The nucleation rate distribution, supercooling degree, and steam velocity droplet were analyzed. Consequently, the diameter distribution of coarse water droplets under 100%, 50%, 40%, 30%, and 20% THA conditions and the distribution of the thermodynamic loss and water droplet resistance loss were obtained. Thermodynamic loss mainly occurred at the front end of second-stage stator blades and trailing end of the last-stage stator blades. The water droplet resistance loss mainly occurred at 40% of the blade height and at the tip of the last-stage stator blades. Moreover, with... [more]
