Variable Valve Strategy Evaluation for Low-Load Operation in a Heavy-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analysis, exhaust, GCI, heavy-duty, low-NOx, rebreathing, residual, valve, variable
By harnessing gasoline’s low reactivity for partially premixed combustion promotion, gasoline compression ignition (GCI) combustion shows the potential to produce markedly improved NOx-soot trade-off with high fuel efficiency compared to conventional diesel combustion. However, at low-load conditions, gasoline’s low reactivity poses challenges to attaining robust combustion with low unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. Increasing the in-cylinder charge temperature by using variable valve actuation (VVA) can be an effective means to address these challenges. In this numerical investigation, VVA strategies, including (1) early exhaust valve opening (EEVO), (2) positive valve overlap (PVO), and (3) exhaust rebreathe (ExReb), were investigated at 1375 RPM and 2 bar brake mean effective pressure in a heavy-duty GCI engine using a market-based gasoline with a research octane number (RON) of 93. The total residual gas level was kept over 50% to achieve an engine-out... [more]

Analysis and Comparison of Power Distribution System Topologies for Low-Voltage DC−DC Automated Guided Vehicle Applications
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: automated guided vehicles, autonomous mobile robots, battery, DC–DC, light electric vehicles, mobile robots, partial power, power distribution systems, super-capacitor, ultra-capacitor
Automated guided vehicles (AGV) or mobile robots (MR) are being used more and more in modern factories, logistics, etc. To extend the work-time of the robot, kinetic energy recovery systems are implemented to store the braking or lifting energy. In most applications, the energy storage system is a Li-ion battery, which is therefore subjected to increased stress and is also oversized. Super-Capacitors can be used in combination to solve this issue. In this paper, different power distribution systems are analysed and compared, using both single or hybrid storage systems (battery and super-capacitor combined). The comparison is both qualitative, using general system characteristics, and quantitative, using an efficiency/power density Pareto front analysis.

Study on Crack Propagation and Coalescence in Fractured Limestone Based on 3D-DIC Technology
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 3D-DIC technology, crack propagation, mechanical characteristics, principal strain nephogram, uniaxial compression
To deeply understand the influence of crack inclination angle on crack propagation and coalescence in fractured limestone, uniaxial compression tests were carried out on limestone specimens with prefabricated cracks. The strain field evolution diagram of the failure process of the specimens was obtained using 3D digital image correlation technology (3D-DIC technology). This, in combination with the crack propagation diagram, was used to analyze the entire failure process of the limestone specimens. The test results show that the evolution process of the principal strain field agrees well with the process of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence. The crack development process is the process of the high strain zones consistently propagating and also the process of micro-cracks appearing, developing, and nucleating to form macro-cracks. With the increase in the parallel crack inclination angle, the stress concentration zone of the intermediate crack transfers from both ends of th... [more]

An Economic Approach to Size of a Renewable Energy Mix in Small Islands
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: LCOE, optimal sizing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sea wave, small islands
The importance of renewable energy exploitation reduces the energy dependence on fossil fuels. Despite technological progress, in several remote areas and small islands the energy production is nowadays dominated by the utilization of fossil fuels. With new, increasingly stringent laws on polluting emissions and the need to lower production costs, it is necessary to exploit as many renewable sources as possible. In order to implement these considerations, it was decided to study renewable energy production. The study was carried out by estimating the energy production on a monthly and annual basis considering a mix of three plants, namely marine, solar, and wind. Simulations on wave production were carried out on a new device developed by the research team at the University of Palermo. In order to be able to perform these simulations, input climate data are required. These data are normally available in literature or obtainable by using specific GIS tools. As criterium, the Levelized C... [more]

Smart Grid, Demand Response and Optimization: A Critical Review of Computational Methods
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand response, intelligent algorithms, Machine Learning, quantum computing, renewable energy resources, smart grid
In view of scarcity of traditional energy resources and environmental issues, renewable energy resources (RERs) are introduced to fulfill the electricity requirement of growing world. Moreover, the effective utilization of RERs to fulfill the varying electricity demands of customers can be achieved via demand response (DR). Furthermore, control techniques, decision variables and offered motivations are the ways to introduce DR into distribution network (DN). This categorization needs to be optimized to balance the supply and demand in DN. Therefore, intelligent algorithms are employed to achieve optimized DR. However, these algorithms are computationally restrained to handle the parametric load of uncertainty involved with RERs and power system. Henceforth, this paper focuses on the limitations of intelligent algorithms for DR. Furthermore, a comparative study of different intelligent algorithms for DR is discussed. Based on conclusions, quantum algorithms are recommended to optimize t... [more]

A Cost-Effective Passive/Active Hybrid Equalizer Circuit Design
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active equalizer circuit (AEC), battery management system (BMS), hybrid equalizer circuit (HEC), passive equalizer circuit (PEC)
This paper proposes a novel hybrid equalizer circuit (HEC) for a battery management system (BMS) to implement the passive HEC (P-HEC), active HEC (A-HEC), or active/passive (AP-HEC) with the same equalizer circuit architecture. The advantages of an HEC are that it is simple, cost-effective, highly energy efficient, and fail safe. The P-HEC can further use a cooling fan or heater instead of a conventional resistor as a power dissipation element to convert the energy of the waste heat generated by the resistor to adjust the battery temperature. Even if the P-HEC uses the resistor to consume energy as in conventional methods, the P-HEC still dramatically improves the component lifetime and reliability of the BMS because the waste heat generated by the equalizer resistor is outside of the BMS board. Three significant advantages of an A-HEC are its (1) low cost, (2) small volume, and (3) higher energy efficiency than the conventional active equalizer circuits (AECs). In the HEC design, the... Reservoir Densification, Pressure Evolution, and Natural Gas Accumulation in the Upper Paleozoic Tight Sandstones in the North Ordos Basin, China
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas accumulation, Hangjinqi area, Ordos Basin, pressure evolution, reservoir densification, tight gas reservoirs
The vague understanding of the coupling relationship among natural gas charging, reservoir densification, and pressure evolution restricted the tight gas exploration in the Lower Shihezi Formation of the Hangjinqi area, north Ordos Basin. In this study, the quantitative porosity evolution model, the pressure evolution process, and the natural gas charging history of tight sandstone reservoirs were constructed by integrated investigation of the reservoir property, the thin section, SEM and cathode luminescence observations, the fluid inclusion analysis and the 1D basin modeling. The results show that the compaction and cementation reduced the primary porosity by 21.79% and 12.41%, respectively. The densification of the reservoir occurred at circa 230 Ma, which was before the natural gas charging time from 192 to 132 Ma. The paleo-overpressure within the tight reservoirs occurred since the Middle Jurassic with the pressure coefficients between 1.1 and 1.55. The continuous uplifting since... [more]

An Inverse-Filter-Based Method to Locate Partial Discharge Sources in Power Transformers
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deconvolution method, electromagnetic regime, inverse filter method, partial discharge, power transformer, source localization, time-reversal method
Partial discharge (PD) occurrence in power transformers can lead to irreparable damage to the power network. In this paper, the inverse filter (IF) method to localize PDs in power transformers is proposed. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that the inverse filter method has been used to localize PD sources in the electromagnetic regime. The method comprises two phases: the forward phase and the backward or backpropagation phase. In the forward phase, the waveform emitted from the PD source is recorded with one or several sensors. In the backward phase, the recorded signal is transformed into the frequency domain, inverted, transformed back into the time domain, and then back injected into the medium. Finally, a suitable criterion is used to localize the PD source. The efficiency of the proposed IF method is assessed considering different scenarios. It is shown that, for the considered configurations, the proposed IF method outperforms the classical time-reve... [more]

Along-Wind Aerodynamic Damping of Wind Turbine Towers: Determination by Wind Tunnel Tests and Impact on Tower Lifetime
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic damping, forced oscillation method, wind turbine towers, wind turbines
As wind turbines become larger and their towers more slender, aeroelastic effects play a bigger role in the wind turbine’s dynamic behavior. This study focuses on the along-wind aerodynamic damping of wind turbine towers, which has been determined by wind tunnel experiments using the forced oscillation method according to Steckley’s approach. Reynolds number scale effects have been considered through surface roughness modifications using sand paper and a dimple pattern, which have been described in detail. The wind tunnel measurements are performed in sub-critical, critical and trans-critical flow regimes, as well as in low- and high-turbulence conditions, which allows for an accurate description of the required relative roughness and Reynolds numbers for achieving trans-critical conditions. The resulting along-wind aerodynamic damping values according to Steckley’s and Holmes’ approaches are compared, and an analytical relation between them is established. Both approaches are then use... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Cheshire Basin, co-current, counter-current, district heat network, heat exchanger
Heat exchangers are vital to any geothermal system looking to use direct heat supplied via a district heat network. Attention on geothermal schemes in the UK has been growing, with minimal attention on the performance of heat exchangers. In this study, different types of heat exchangers are analysed for the Cheshire Basin as a case study, specifically the Crewe area, to establish their effectiveness and optimal heat transfer area. The results indicate that counter-current flow heat exchangers have a higher effectiveness than co-current heat exchangers. Optimisation of the heat exchange area can produce total savings of £43.06 million and £71.5 million, over a 25-year lifetime, in comparison with a fossil-fuelled district heat network using geothermal fluid input temperatures of 67 °C and 86 °C, respectively.

Vibration Converter with Passive Energy Management for Battery-Less Wireless Sensor Nodes in Predictive Maintenance
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autonomous wireless sensor, electromagnetic converter, energy harvesting, failure detection, passive energy management, planar spring, predictive maintenance, rectifier, voltage multiplier, weak vibration, wideband, WSN
Predictive maintenance is becoming increasingly important in industry and requires continuous monitoring to prevent failures and anticipate maintenance processes, resulting in reduced downtime. Vibration is often used for failure detection and equipment conditioning as it is well correlated to the machine’s operation and its variation is an indicator of process changes. In this context, we propose a novel energy-autonomous wireless sensor system that is able to measure without the use of batteries and automatically deliver alerts once the machine has an anomaly by the variation in acceleration. For this, we designed a wideband electromagnetic energy harvester and realized passive energy management to supply a wireless sensor node, which does not need an external energy supply. The advantage of the solution is that the designed circuit is able to detect the failure without the use of additional sensors, but by the Analog Digital Converter (ADC) of the Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSN) themsel... Geothermal Resources and ATES Potential of Mesozoic Reservoirs in the North German Basin
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: geothermal resource assessment, heat in place, North German Basin, storage potential, subsurface utilization
Mesozoic sandstone aquifers in the North German Basin offer significant potential to provide green and sustainable geothermal heat as well as large-scale storage of heat or chill. The determination of geothermal and subsurface heat storage potentials is still afflicted with obstacles due to sparse and partly uncertain subsurface data. Relevant data include the structural and depositional architecture of the underground and the detailed petrophysical properties of the constituting rocks; both are required for a detailed physics-based integrated modeling and a potential assessment of the subsurface. For the present study, we combine recently published basin-wide structural interpretations of depth horizons of the main stratigraphic formations, with temperature data from geological and geostatistical 3D models (i.e., CEBS, GeotIS). Based on available reservoir sandstone facies data, additional well-log-based reservoir lithology identification, and by providing technical boundary condition... [more]

Mathematical Modeling of Hydraulic Fracture Formation and Cleaning Processes
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comparative analysis, fracture cleanup, hydraulic fracture, non-uniform fracture toughness, planar-3D model, seepage flows
The effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing procedure is crucially dependent on the stage of fracture planning and design. Forecasting fracture behavior in rock formations characterized by non-uniform toughness is a serious challenge. In the present paper, a planar-3D model considering the rock’s non-uniform fracture toughness has been developed for the uneven propagation of a hydraulic fracture. The series of numerical experiments were designed to study the effect of inhomogenous fracture toughness. The results show that the fracture toughness contract significantly controls the overall direction of fracture propagation, and a combination of toughness contrast and the proportion between the pay zone and barrier zone determine the fracture profile: from almost circular with or without a pair of narrow wedges when the proportion is small to almost rectangular otherwise. This paper also discusses the process of cleaning a fracture from hydraulic fracturing fluid by oil. Using numerical... [more]

Accumulation of Inert Impurities in a Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell System with Anode Recirculation and Periodic Purge: A Simple Analytical Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical model, anode recirculation, fuel cell, Hydrogen, inert accumulation, periodic purge
Anode recirculation with periodic purge is commonly used in polymer electrolyte fuel cell systems to control the accumulation of nitrogen, water, and other impurities that are present in the fuel or diffuse through the membrane from the cathode compartment. In this work, we develop a simple, generalized analytical model that simulates the time dependence of the accumulation of inert impurities in the anode compartment of such a system. It is shown that, when there is transport out of the anode chamber, the inert species is expected to accumulate exponentially until equilibrium is reached when the rate of inert entering the anode in the fuel supply and/or via crossover from the cathode is balanced by the rate of leakage and/or crossover to the cathode. The model is validated using recently published experimental data for the accumulation of N2, CH4, and CO2 in a recirculated system. The results show that nitrogen accumulation needs to be taken into account to properly adjust system para... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data analysis, data post-processing, energy ratio, FLORIS, historical data, model comparison, model validation, offshore wind, SCADA, wake steering
A recent expert elicitation showed that model validation remains one of the largest barriers for commercial wind farm control deployment. The Gaussian-shaped wake deficit model has grown in popularity in wind farm field experiments, yet its validation for larger farms and throughout annual operation remains limited. This article addresses this scientific gap, providing a model comparison of the Gaussian wind farm model with historical data of three offshore wind farms. The energy ratio is used to quantify the model’s accuracy. We assume a fixed turbulence intensity of I∞=6% and a standard deviation on the inflow wind direction of σwd=3° in our Gaussian model. First, we demonstrate the non-uniqueness issue of I∞ and σwd, which display a waterbed effect when considering the energy ratios. Second, we show excellent agreement between the Gaussian model and historical data for most wind directions in the Offshore Windpark Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ) and Westermost Rough wind farms (36 and 35 wind... Forecasting Crude Oil Prices with a WT-FNN Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crude oil prices forecasting, the stochastic time effective function, WT-FNN
In order to improve the accuracy of forecasting crude oil prices, a new crude oil price forecasting method is introduced in the paper that is a combination of the FNN model and the stochastic time effective function—namely, the WT-FNN model. The FNN model keeps track of the historical values of crude oil prices and predicts future crude oil prices, and the stochastic time effective function gives greater weight to recent information and smaller weight to old information, thus making the prediction of crude oil prices more reasonable. We selected the daily data of Brent crude oil prices from 4 January 2000 to 30 September 2021 as research objects and then used the WT-FNN model to train and predict the research objects. By comparing it to the benchmark model, we found that the predictive effect of the WT-FNN model was better than the FNN model and the no-change model. The results also passed a robustness test.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: binary cycle, Concentrating Solar Energy, geothermal plant, LCOE, thermodynamic analysis
Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and geothermal energy systems are outlined as two of the most promising technologies for sustainable and reliable electricity generation. Several studies in the technical literature have pointed out that the hybridization of solar and geothermal energy sources could lead to a reduction of the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of geothermal systems, as well as improving the capacity factor of CSP systems. However, the technical literature shows that the integration of solar thermal collectors does not present a positive impact in all scenarios analyzed. The present study aims to further analyze the competitiveness of the hybridization of solar and geothermal systems under high irradiation conditions such as those observed in the Andean region in northern Chile. The evaluation was carried out by coupling a thermodynamic model in Engineering Equation Solver (EES) with a solar thermal model in the System Advisor Model (SAM). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acetylene, Ethylene, fuel oil, hydrogen power, non-equilibrium low-temperature plasma, plasma pyrolysis, pulse electric discharge
The non-thermal plasma pyrolysis of fuel oil, under the action of low-voltage electric discharges in the liquid phase, has made it possible to develop a new process to obtain valuable petrochemical products. In this study, the main parameters, including pulse energy and the time of impact on the non-thermal plasma pyrolysis process, are studied. The main components of the obtained gaseous products are hydrogen (27.6−49.6 mol%), acetylene (33.6−49.1 mol%), ethylene (6.9−12.1 mol%), methane (3.9−9.1 mol%), and hydrocarbons C3-C5 (3.8−9.3 mol%). Increasing the capacity of electric discharges leads to an increase in the content of acetylene in the gas phase to 49.1 mol% and a decrease in energy costs for the production of gaseous products.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cuttings cleaning, drilling, pulsed jet, unconventional oil and gas
Vibration drilling technology induced by hydraulic pulse can assist the bit in breaking rock at deep formation. Simultaneously, the pulsed jet generated by the hydraulic pulse promotes removal of the cuttings from the bottom hole. Nowadays, the cuttings removal mechanism of the pulsed jet is not clear, which causes cuttings to accumulate at the bottom hole and increases the risk of repeated cutting. In this paper, a pressure-flow rate fluctuation model is established to analyze the fluctuation characteristics of the pulsed jet at the bottom hole. Based on the model, the effects of displacement, well depth, drilling fluid viscosity, and flow area of the pulsed jet tool on the feature of instantaneous flow at the bottom hole are discussed. The results show that the pulsed jet causes flow rate and pressure to fluctuate at the bottom hole. Keywords: Biomass, catalytic pyrolysis, HDO, MAP, microwave pyrolysis, plastics
Lignocellulosic biomass and waste, such as plastics, represent an abundant resource today, and they can be converted thermo-chemically into energy in a refinery. Existing research works on catalytic and non-catalytic pyrolysis performed in thermally-heated reactors have been reviewed in this text, along with those performed in microwave-heated ones. Thermally-heated reactors, albeit being the most commonly used, present various drawbacks such as superficial heating, high thermal inertia and slow response times. That is why microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) appears to be a very promising technology, even if the process does present some technical drawbacks as well such as the formation of hot spots. The different types of catalysts used during the process and their impacts have also been examined in the text. More specifically, studies conducted in fluidised bed reactors (FBR) have been detailed and their advantages and drawbacks discussed. Finally, future prospects of MAP have been br... [more]

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) can be used during idle times to convert hydrogen into electricity in a decentralised manner, thus ensuring a completely renewable energy supply. In addition to the electric power, waste heat is generated in the fuel cell stack that can also be used. This paper investigates how the energy demand of a compiled German neighbourhood can be met by FCEVs and identifies potential technical problems. For this purpose, energy scenarios are modelled in the Open Energy System Modelling Framework (oemof). An optimisation simulation finds the most energetically favourable solution for the 10-day period under consideration. Up to 49% of the heat demand for heating and hot water can be covered directly by the waste heat of the FCEVs. As the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to be charged increases, so does this share. 5 of the 252 residents must permanently provide an FCEV to supply the neighbourhood.
