Numerical Investigation of the Application of Miller Cycle and Low-Carbon Fuels to Increase Diesel Engine Efficiency and Reduce Emissions
Edward Roper, Yaodong Wang, Zhichao Zhang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engine, emission, low-carbon fuel, Miller cycle
In this paper, validated simulations using Ricardo WAVE have been performed to investigate the effect of the Miller cycle and low-carbon fuels on the performance (power, torque, BTE and BSFC) and emissions of a diesel engine. The results show that the increased Miller cycle effect (larger deviation of the advanced or retarded intake valve closing from the standard intake valve closing time) will decrease NOx, CO and HC emissions, and slightly improve brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) with slight loss in engine performance and increase in soot emissions. An engine running B0 (diesel with 0% Biodiesel in the blend) with a −18% Miller cycle effect has a reduction in NOx of 9% and CO of 4.3% with a decrease of 1.6% in power at the rated engine speed. Using low carbon fuels drastically reduces emissions with reduced BTE and increased BSFC. When used in conjunction, the Miller cycle and low-carbon fuels have an improved effect on both performance and e... [more]
A Study on Frequency Stability and Primary Frequency Response of the Korean Electric Power System Considering the High Penetration of Wind Power
SungHoon Lim, Taewan Kim, Kipo Yoon, DongHee Choi, Jung-Wook Park
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtailment, droop coefficient, frequency stability, inertial response, primary frequency response, wind power plants
The high penetration of wind power decreases the system inertia and primary frequency reserve while replacing the conventional synchronous generators (SGs). Therefore, if the system operator does not take appropriate action on the remaining generation units (GUs) operation, high penetration of wind power will aggravate the frequency stability. To solve this problem, wind power plants (WPPs) may provide the inertial response and primary frequency response (PFR) to support the frequency stability. However, due to the variability of renewable energy, WPPs may not provide adequate frequency response whenever it is required. This paper proposes an algorithm to determine the operation of GUs to provide appropriate PFR for a power system with high penetration of wind power. Through the proposed algorithm, it calculates the required PFR to restore the decreased frequency stability caused by the high penetration of wind power. Then, while considering the available PFR from WPPs, it redetermines... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ethernet network, GOOSE, IEC 61850 standard, multivendor testbed, process bus communication, SMV, substation automation, substation protection
Substations are becoming increasingly reliant on international electrotechnical commission (IEC)-61850-enabled devices. However, device compatibility with these standards does not guarantee interoperability when devices are taken from different manufacturers. If interoperability of multivendor devices can be achieved, then power utilities will be in a position to implement multivendor devices in substations. The study here presents the development and testing of a digital substation test platform that incorporates devices from different manufacturers. The process bus communication and protection operation of the intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) were tested to validate device interoperability. The testbed was tested for two IED process bus communications, generic object-oriented substation event (GOOSE) and sampled measured value (SMV). The GOOSE is travelling between IED to IED with an end-to-end (ETE) delay of 2 ms and the SMV read by the IEDs are the same as the injected real-ti... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boiling heat transfer, critical heat flux (CHF), grid structure, laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF), pool boiling
Microchannel structures possess high efficiency and high boiling heat transfer coefficient of two-phase flow. In particular, the grid structure has the advantages of a simple pattern, large load capacity, and good surface adaptability. Employing the laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF) manufacturing technology, a new method of forming heat transfer grids with a controllable structure is proposed in this study. The formation principle, process, and the reasons for improvements in the boiling heat transfer performance were investigated with stainless steel materials. Laser scanning with varying scan spacings was used to prepare multiple structures with different grid widths and wall heights. On this basis, the porosity and pore morphology of the grid structures were analyzed, followed by pool boiling heat transfer experiments. The results revealed that the grid structure significantly affected the nucleate boiling behavior and increased the critical heat flux (CHF). It was found that th... [more]

Nan Zhou, Xiulong Cui, Changhao Han, Zhou Yang
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic characteristic, acoustic emission, external short circuit, lithium-ion battery, state of charge
The safety of power batteries has received more and more attention in promoting electric vehicles. The external short circuit is particularly prominent as an abnormal and harmful event of a battery, and the exploration of in-situ low-cost detection technology for such an event is the starting point of this paper. By building an experimental bench that could detect the external short circuit of the battery and obtain the acoustic, electrode, and temperature responses, the resulting acoustic analysis would establish an internal connection with the electrode and temperature measurement when the external short circuit occurs. The respective acoustic response characteristics of different initial battery states of charge were analyzed by selecting appropriate acoustic characteristic parameters in the time and frequency domains. The acoustic measurement could represent the battery abnormality synchronously like the electrode measurement, and the results of the damage and rearrangement of the... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonization, co-firing, CO2 emissions, coal and biomass, economic feasibility
CO2 emissions reduction from coal-fired power plants is an urgent issue in Japan, as well as around the world. The purpose of this study is to estimate the CO2 emissions and economy of using carbonized wood pellets produced overseas and co-fired at coal-fired power plants in Japan. We examined carbonized wood pellets produced in Canada and Vietnam, since those countries are major exporters of wood pellets for Japan. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The CO2 emissions and calculated cost per calorific value of carbonized wood pellets (CP25), which have a fixed carbon content of 25 wt.%, are lower than those of wood pellets at the port of import in Japan. When the fixed carbon of carbonized biomass is controlled at 25 wt.% or more via a carbonizer, sufficient pyrolysis gas (the heat source used for drying and carbonization without auxiliary fuel) can be obtained. (2) Carbonized wood pellets manufactured in Vietnam are more economical than those manufactured in Canada, since the re... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: maintenance, repair, wind energy, wind turbine blades
Maintenance and repair of wind turbines contribute to the higher costs of wind energy. In this paper, various technologies of structural repair of damaged and broken wind turbine blades are compared. The composite plates, mimicking damaged blade parts, were damaged and repaired, using various available curing and bonding technologies. Technologies of repair with hand layup lamination, vacuum repair with hand layup and infusion, ultraviolet repair and high temperature thermal curing were compared. The repaired samples were tested under tensile static and fatigue tests, and subject to microscopic X-ray investigations. It was observed that both the strength of the repaired structures and the porosity depend on the repair technology used. Vacuum-based technologies lead to relatively stiff and lower-strength repaired plates, while ultraviolet-curing technologies lead to average stiffness and high strength. High-temperature vacuum curing leads to the highest maximum stress. Hand layup (both... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive energy optimization, battery pack, fluctuation load, hybrid energy storage system, supercapacitor
To address the problem of DC bus voltage surge caused by load demand fluctuation in an off-grid microgrid, here, an adaptive energy optimization method based on a hybrid energy-storage system to maintain the stability of DC bus voltage is presented. The adaptive energy optimization method consists of three parts: the average filtering algorithm, extracting fluctuating power in demand load; the supercapacitor terminal voltage control, keeping the terminal voltage of the supercapacitor near reference; and the battery pack balance control, adjusting the charge/discharge to balance the state of charge for battery packs. In this proposed method, after extracting the fluctuating power by the low-pass filter when the demand load fluctuates, the battery packs release the power to offset the low-frequency fluctuation load and the supercapacitor to instantaneously compensate the high-frequency fluctuation power, to prolong the service life of batteries and maintain the stability of DC bus voltag... Keywords: energy consumption, linkage, modified hypothetical extraction method, the construction sector
The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships between the construction sector and the rest of the Chinese economy in the energy consumption as it is crucial in energy consumption of the whole economy. Therefore, this paper uses the Modified Hypothetical Extraction Method (MHEM) to quantify the linkages of energy consumption in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018, providing a new perspective for energy consumption linkage studies in China. In this paper we discover the volumes and paths of energy consumption net flows from other blocks to the construction sector and identify the key energy suppliers of the construction sector. The empirical findings show that the indirect energy consumption exceeded the direct energy consumption between 2002 and 2018, representing more than 90% of total (direct plus indirect) energy consumption of the construction sector. Between 2002 and 2018, the indirect energy consumption of the construction sector increased from 27,579 to... [more]

Keywords: combustion characteristics, cycle-by-cycle variations, hydrous ethanol gasoline, noise emissions, spark ignition engine
Nowadays, the noise pollution of internal combustion engines is a very important factor influencing human health and is the main noise source of urban environmental noise. Additionally, the main source of gasoline engine noise consists of combustion noise in the cylinder, where the combustion noise is influenced by the combustion processes within the combustion chamber, especially the cyclic variation in the engine combustion. Thus, the inter-relationship between engine noise, cyclic variation and combustion is of great interest to be explored. Moreover, despite the environmental advantages of clean energy, the impact of different fuels on the internal combustion engine’s noise emissions cannot be ignored. As a result, in this work, three blends were prepared and used as test fuels, namely pure gasoline (E0), 10% hydrous ethanol (E10W) and 20% hydrous ethanol (E20W) by volume, accompanied by engine operating at a steady speed of 2000 r/min under various loads. Keywords: cyclic steam stimulation, heavy oil reservoir, productivity, steam overlay, threshold pressure gradient
Cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) is a typical enhanced oil recovery method for heavy oil reservoirs. In this paper, a new model for the productivity of a CSS well in multilayer heavy oil reservoirs is proposed. First, for the steam volume of each formation layer, it is proposed that the total steam injection volume will be split by the formation factor (Kh) for the commingled steam injection mode. Then, based on the equivalent flow resistance principle, the productivity model can be derived. In this model, the heavy oil reservoir is composed of a cold zone, a hot water zone, and a steam zone. Next, using the energy conservation law, the equivalent heating radius can be calculated with the consideration of the steam overlay. Simultaneously, a correlation between the threshold pressure gradient (TPG) and oil mobility is also applied for the productivity formula in the cold zone and the hot water zone. Afterward, this model is validated by comparing the simulation results with the results o... [more]

Keywords: cyber–physical analysis, false data injection attacks, IoT, smart grid communication, smart grid measurements, state estimation
With the push for higher efficiency and reliability, an increasing number of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and associated information and communication technology (ICT) are integrated into the Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled smart grid. These advanced technologies and IEDs also bring potential vulnerabilities to the intelligent cyber−physical smart grid. State estimation, as a primary step of system monitoring and situational awareness, is a potential target for attackers. A number of other smart grid applications, such as voltage stability assessment and contingency screening, utilize state estimation results as input data. False data injection (FDI) is a specific way to attack state estimation by manipulating input data. Existing research mainly focuses on the mathematical analysis of FDI attacks; however, in these methods, discussions of reachability requirements to compromise measurements considering cyberinfrastructure are limited. Reachability is defined as a measure tha... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical reaction path, ignition delay time, kerosene, premixed combustion, SI engine
SI engines are installed widely in small aircrafts as they have good fuel economy. Currently, these SI engines are fueled with gasoline, although their safety can be improved if kerosene is used. However, the combustion performance of kerosene cannot fulfil the requirements due to the differences in physicochemical properties. This study investigates the ignition delay time of kerosene at a pressure range of 15−35 bar and a temperature range of 600−1000 K. A detailed chemical reaction mechanism is employed for the premixed combustion process. Under the initial conditions of 1000 K and 35 bar, with an equivalence ratio of 1, the total ignition delay time of kerosene is 0.401 ms. The NTC range of kerosene is determined as roughly 750−920 K. Subsequently, the chemical reaction paths with an equivalence ratio of 0.8, 1, and 1.2 and an initial pressure of 15, 20, and 25 bar were analyzed. The rate-determined elementary reactions were obtained based on a sensitivity analysis. The difference... [more]

Keywords: energy savings, household, household classification, load forecasting, occupant behavior, residential building
There are two primary ways to save energy within a building: (1) through improving building engineering structures and adopting efficient appliance ownership, and (2) through changing occupants’ energy-consuming behaviors. Unfortunately the second way suffers from many challenges and limitations. Occupant behavior is, indeed, a complex and multi-disciplinary concept depending on several human factors. Although its importance is recognized by the energy management community, it is often oversimplified and naively defined when used to study, analyze or model energy load. This paper aims at promoting the definition of occupant behavior as well as exploring the extent to which the latter is involved in research works, targeting directly or indirectly energy savings. Hence, in this work, we propose an overview of interdisciplinary research approaches that consider occupants’ energy-saving behaviors, while we present the big picture and evaluate how occupant behavior is defined, we also prop... Keywords: fluorescent carbon, photocatalytic hydrogen production, plastic waste, sensing of metal ions
A sustainable nexus between renewable energy production and plastic abatement is imperative for overall sustainable development. In this regard, this study aims to develop a cheaper and environmentally friendly nexus between plastic waste management, wastewater treatment, and renewable hydrogen production. Fluorescent carbon (FCs) were synthesized from commonly used LDPE (low-density polyethylene) by a facile hydrothermal approach. Optical absorption study revealed an absorption edge around 300 nm and two emission bands at 430 and 470 nm. The morphological analysis showed two different patterns of FCs, a thin sheet with 2D morphology and elongated particles. The sheet-shaped particles are 0.5 μm in size, while as for elongated structures, the size varies from 0.5 to 1 μm. The as-synthesized FCs were used for the detection of metal ions (reference as Cu2+ ions) in water. The fluorescence intensity of FCs versus Cu2+ ions depicts its upright analytical ability with a limit of detection (... [more]

Keywords: earth’s mover distance (EMD), false data injection attacks (FDIAs), joint image transformation (JIT), smart grid
The high integration of power information physical system improves the efficiency of power transmission, but it also brings new threats to power grid. False data injection attacks can use traditional bad data to detect vulnerabilities and maliciously tamper with measurement data to affect the state estimation results. In order to achieve a higher security level for power systems, we propose an earth mover distance method to detect false data injection attacks in smart grids. The proposed method is built on the dynamic correlation of measurement data between adjacent moments. Firstly, a joint-image-transformation-based scheme is proposed to preprocess the measurement data variation, so that the distribution characteristics of measurement data variation are more significant. Secondly, the deviation between the probability distribution of measurement data variation and the histogram are obtained based on the earth’s mover distance. Finally, a reasonable detection threshold is selected to... [more]

This work investigates potential cost reduction trajectories of three emerging offshore renewable energy technologies (floating offshore wind, tidal stream, and wave) with respect to meeting ambitious cost targets set out in the Strategic Energy Technology Implementation Plans (SET-Plans) for Offshore Wind and Ocean Energy. A methodology is presented which calculates target costs for current early-stage devices, starting from the 2030 SET-Plan levelised cost targets. Component-based experience curves have been applied as part of the methodology, characterised through the comparative maturity level of each technology-specific cost centre. The resultant early-stage target costs are then compared with actual costs for current devices to highlight where further cost reduction is still required. It has been found that innovation and development requirements to reach these targets vary greatly between different technologies, based on their current level of technological maturity. Keywords: 3D seismic protection, base isolation, emergency diesel generator, fragility curves, HCLPF, limit states, nuclear power plant, SPRA
Nuclear power plants are required to maintain operation after an earthquake, leading to a safe shutdown if necessary. In the case of a loss of offsite power, the onsite emergency diesel generator is critical to ensure procedural operations of the nuclear power plant. As a means to reduce the overall seismic risk, a three-dimensional seismic protection system is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of the emergency diesel generator. The proposed seismic isolation system decouples the horizontal and vertical components of shaking and considers available hardware to achieve an effective isolation solution over the range of excitation frequencies considered. Numerical analysis of the proposed system demonstrates a reduction in seismic demands on the emergency diesel generator and provides a higher safety margin than conventional base installation procedures. Umbilical lines that cross the isolation plane are considered and impose additional constraints on the displacement capacity o... [more]

Keywords: battery swapping station, electric vehicle, queuing system, Simulation, waiting time
As electric vehicles have become increasingly popular in recent years, battery swapping technology has been promoted as an alternative to the time-consuming battery charging process. Nevertheless, battery swapping is held back by the trade-off between the additional battery investment and the short service time for users. In this paper, we developed simulation models to analyze the economics of battery swapping systems. In particular, we collected real data from eight battery swapping stations Guangzhou, China for the analysis. The results show that the service levels of the stations are reduced significantly as the number of users increases. On the other hand, economies of scale exists when implementing the battery swapping system. As the number of users increases, to maintain the same level of service level, the cost of the batteries shared by each user decreases. The analysis also suggests that, given the scale of potential users for an area, the marginal utility of increasing the n... [more]

Keywords: adsorption chillers, silica gel, water evaporation
In this work, the performance of an innovative evaporator based on water falling film was investigated. The studied evaporator has been equipped with a recirculation system to maximise the wetted surface. Tests have been carried out in a lab-scale adsorption unit connected to a test bench recently realised at Politecnico di Milano labs for evaluating heat transfer performances under realistic operating conditions. Several ad/desorption cooling cycles were performed, setting different liquid refrigerant initial contents (0.9−1.5 kg), different chilled water inlet temperatures (7−20 °C) and flow rates (200−1000 L/h) and different adsorbent bed temperatures (25−30 °C). Evaporation performance has been determined in delivered cooling capacity. Moreover, the experimental data were used to calculate the overall evaporator heat transfer conductance (UA). Experiments showed how the heat duty peaks are mainly due to the thermal level of the chilled water that enters the evaporator, not the wate... [more]
