Jianqiang Luo, Yiqing Zou, Siqi Bu, Ulas Karaagac
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converter-driven stability, full converter-based photovoltaic generation (FCPV), full converter-based wind power generation (FCWG), hybrid renewable energy source (HRES) system, multi-modal interaction
Renewable energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics (PVs) have been increasingly integrated into the power system through power electronic converters in recent years. However, power electronic converter-driven stability has issues under specific circumstances, for instance, modal resonances might deteriorate the dynamic performance of the power systems or even threaten the overall stability. In this work, the integration impact of a hybrid renewable energy source (HRES) system on modal interaction and converter-driven stability was investigated in an IEEE 16-machine 68-bus power system. In this paper, firstly, an HRES system is introduced, which consists of full converter-based wind power generation (FCWG) and full converter-based photovoltaic generation (FCPV). The equivalent dynamic models of FCWG and FCPV are then established, followed by linearized state-space modeling. On this basis, converter-driven stability analysis was performed to reveal the modal resonance mechanis... [more]
Numerical Study of Lorentz Force Interaction with Micro Structure in Channel Flow
Shabbir Ahmad, Kashif Ali, Sohail Ahmad, Jianchao Cai
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: channel, heat transfer, magnetic field, micropolar fluid
The heat transfer Magnetohydrodynamics flows have been potentially used to enhance the thermal characteristics of several systems such as heat exchangers, electromagnetic casting, adjusting blood flow, X-rays, magnetic drug treatment, cooling of nuclear reactors, and magnetic devices for cell separation. Our concern in this article is to numerically investigate the flow of an incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics micropolar fluid with heat transportation through a channel having porous walls. By employing the suitable dimensionless coordinates, the flow model equations are converted into a nonlinear system of dimensionless ordinary differential equations, which are then numerically treated for different preeminent parameters with the help of quasi-linearization. The system of complex nonlinear differential equations can efficiently be solved using this technique. Impact of the problem parameters for microrotation, temperature, and velocity are interpreted and discussed through tables and... [more]

Min-Hwi Kim, Youngsub An, Hong-Jin Joo, Dong-Won Lee, Jae-Ho Yun
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-sharing community, ground source heat pumps, photovoltaic and solar thermal system, self-sufficiency
Due to increased grid problems caused by renewable energy systems being used to realize zero energy buildings and communities, the importance of energy sharing and self-sufficiency of renewable energy also increased. In this study, the energy performance of an energy-sharing community was investigated to improve its energy efficiency and renewable energy self-sufficiency. For a case study, a smart village was selected via detailed simulation. In this study, the thermal energy for cooling, heating, and domestic hot water was produced by ground source heat pumps, which were integrated with thermal energy storage (TES) with solar energy systems. We observed that the ST system integrated with TES showed higher self-sufficiency with grid interaction than the PV and PVT systems. This was due to the heat pump system being connected to thermal energy storage, which was operated as an energy storage system. Consequently, we also found that the ST system had a lower operating energy, CO2 emissio... [more]
A Consensus Algorithm for Multi-Objective Battery Balancing
Jorge Varela Barreras, Ricardo de Castro, Yihao Wan, Tomislav Dragicevic
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balancing systems, consensus algorithm, distributed control, electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery, state-of-charge equalization, temperature equalization
Batteries stacks are made of cells in certain series-parallel arrangements. Unfortunately, cell performance degrades over time in terms of capacity, internal resistance, or self-discharge rate. In addition, degradation rates are heterogeneous, leading to cell-to-cell variations. Balancing systems can be used to equalize those differences. Dissipative or non-dissipative systems, so-called passive or active balancing, can be used to equalize either voltage at end-of-charge, or state-of-charge (SOC) at all times. While passive balancing is broadly adopted by industry, active balancing has been mostly studied in academia. Beyond that, an emerging research field is multi-functional balancing, i.e., active balancing systems that pursue additional goals on top of SOC equalization, such as equalization of temperature, power capability, degradation rates, or losses minimization. Regardless of their functionality, balancing circuits are based either on centralized or decentralized control system... [more]
A Review of the Degradation of Photovoltaic Modules for Life Expectancy
Jaeun Kim, Matheus Rabelo, Siva Parvathi Padi, Hasnain Yousuf, Eun-Chel Cho, Junsin Yi
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation, life expectancy, PV module, test methods
Photovoltaic (PV) modules are generally considered to be the most reliable components of PV systems. The PV module has a high probability of being able to perform adequately for 30 years under typical operating conditions. In order to evaluate the long-term performance of a PV module under diversified terrestrial conditions, outdoor-performance data should be used. However, this requires a wait of 25 years to determine the module reliability, which is highly undesirable. Thus, accelerated-stress tests performed in the laboratory by mimicking different field conditions are important for understanding the performance of a PV module. In this paper, we discuss PV-module degradation types and different accelerated-stress types that are used to evaluate the PV-module reliability and durability for life expectancy before using them in the real field. Finally, prevention and correction measures are described to minimize economic losses.

Morteza Daviran Keshavarzi, Mohd Hasan Ali
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, solar photovoltaic system, supercapacitor
Energy storage devices are collocated with conventional solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to tackle the intermittency of solar irradiance and maintain the power quality of supplied energy. The energy storage system usually has its own conversion devices that may incur an extra capital cost of installation. This paper proposes an integrated and cost-effective photovoltaic-supercapacitor (PVSC) system in which the energy storage functionality of the supercapacitor (SC) is merged into the PV array where the power flow bidirectionally takes place to maintain the system stability under grid disturbances during the daytime, nighttime, and cloudy weather. A nonlinear mathematical model (NMM) was developed to conduct the stability analyses and to design the controller parameters, which facilitates a faster and more accurate numerical analysis compared to existing average models. The effectiveness of the proposed system was evaluated by simulation analysis and compared to that of the basic PV and... [more]
Rightsizing the Design of a Hybrid Microgrid
Daniel Reich, Giovanna Oriti
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, design space, diesel generator, energy management, load demand, microgrid, photovoltaic source
Selecting the sizes of distributed energy resources is a central planning element when designing a microgrid. Decision makers may consider several important factors, including, but not limited to, capacity, cost, reliability and sustainability. We introduce a method for rightsizing capacity that presents a range of potential microgrid design solutions, allowing decision makers to weigh their upsides and downsides based on a variety of measurable factors. We decouple component-specific modeling assumptions, energy management system logic and objective measurements from our simulation-based nested binary search method for rightsizing to meet power loads. In doing so, we develop a flexible, customizable and extensible approach to microgrid design planning. Aspects which have traditionally been incorporated directly in optimization-centric frameworks, such as resilience and reliability, can be treated as complementary analyses in our decoupled approach. This enables decision makers to gain... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dispatchable DG, distributed generation, energy storage systems, hydrogen production, power loss reduction, renewable energies
In the last years, a change in the power generation paradigm has been promoted by the increasing use of renewable energy sources combined with the need to reduce CO2 emissions. Small and distributed power generators are preferred to the classical centralized and sizeable ones. Accordingly, this fact led to a new way to think and design distributions grids. One of the challenges is to handle bidirectional power flow at the distribution substations transformer from and to the national transportation grid. The aim of this paper is to review and analyze the different mathematical methods to design the architecture of a distribution grid and the state of the art of the technologies used to produce and eventually store or convert, in different energy carriers, electricity produced by renewable energy sources, coping with the aleatory of these sources.

Luigi Aldieri, Jonas Grafström, Concetto Paolo Vinci
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, Energy Efficiency, job creation, knowledge spillovers, patents
The purpose of this paper is to establish if Marshallian and Jacobian knowledge spillovers affect job creation in the green energy sector. Whether these two effects exist is important for the number of jobs created in related fields and jobs pushed away in other sectors. In the analysis, the production efficiency, in terms of jobs and job spillovers, from inventions in solar, wind and energy efficiency, is explored through data envelopment analysis (DEA), based on the Malmquist productivity index, and tobit regression. A panel dataset of American and European firms over the period of 2002−2017 is used. The contribution to the literature is to show the role of the spillovers from the same technology sector (Marshallian externalities), and of the spillovers from more diversified activity (Jacobian externalities). Since previous empirical evidence concerning the innovation effects on the production efficiency is yet weak, the paper attempts to bridge this gap. The empirical findings sugge... [more]
Research on Improved Seismic Instrumentation System for Nuclear Power Plants
Liang Li, Xiuli Du, Rong Pan, Xiuyun Zhu, Haiyan Luan
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-parameters, peak ground acceleration, seismic instrumentation system
According to the requirements of nuclear safety regulations, nuclear power plants must be equipped with seismic instrumentation systems, which are mainly used for monitoring alarm and automatic shutdown alarm during an earthquake. Both the second and third generation NPPs adopt Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). However, among the seismic acceleration characteristics, isolated and prominent single high frequency acceleration peaks have no decisive influence on the seismic response. Especially when the earthquake monitoring alarm is at 1 out of 7, it is likely to cause a false alarm or false shutdown. In addition, it usually takes one month or more for the NPPs to restart after the shutdown. In this paper, an improved seismic instrumentation system based on the existing system is proposed. For high intensity areas, three components resultant acceleration is used to judge the 2 out of 4 logic of the automatic seismic trip system(ASTS). For low intensity areas, the seismic failure level is e... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade design, lift–drag-composite type, low flow velocity, tidal current energy
The research on tidal-current energy-capture technology mainly focuses on the conditions of high flow velocity, focusing on the use of differential pressure lift, while the average flow velocity in most sea areas of China is less than 1.5 m/s, especially in the marine aquaculture area, where tidal-current energy is needed to provide green energy locally. Due to the low flow velocity of this type of sea area, it seriously affects the effect of differential pressure lift, which is conducive to exerting the effect of impact resistance. In this regard, the coupling effect of the differential pressure lift and the impact resistance on the blade torque is comprehensively considered, this research puts forward the design method of the lift-−drag-composite thin-plate arc turbine blade. Based on the blade element momentum (BEM) theory and Bernoulli’s principle, the turbine dynamic model was established, and the nonlinear optimization method was used to solve the shape parameters of the turbine... A Regional Day-Ahead Rooftop Photovoltaic Generation Forecasting Model Considering Unauthorized Photovoltaic Installation
Taeyoung Kim, Jinho Kim
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: regional PV output forecasting, rooftop PV, unauthorized PV installation, upscaling method
Rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems are usually behind the meter and invisible to utilities and retailers and, thus, their power generation is not monitored. If a number of rooftop PV systems are installed, it transforms the net load pattern in power systems. Moreover, not only generation but also PV capacity information is invisible due to unauthorized PV installations, causing inaccuracies in regional PV generation forecasting. This study proposes a regional rooftop PV generation forecasting methodology by adding unauthorized PV capacity estimation. PV capacity estimation consists of two steps: detection of unauthorized PV generation and estimation capacity of detected PV. Finally, regional rooftop PV generation is predicted by considering unauthorized PV capacity through the support vector regression (SVR) and upscaling method. The results from a case study show that compared with estimation without unauthorized PV capacity, the proposed methodology reduces the normalized root mean sq... [more]

Keywords: cement sheath, cement slurry, corrosion resistance, gas migration, gas outflows, well cementing
Gas migration through fresh and hardened cement slurry is an ongoing problem in the oil industry. In order to eliminate this unfavourable phenomenon, research is being conducted on new compositions of slurries for gas wells. The article presents the results of research for slurries with low and high resistance to gas migration. The proper selection of the quantity and quality of components makes it possible to design slurry with the required static structural strength values. In addition, the cement sheath of such anti-migration slurry has low porosity and a very low proportion of large pore spaces. Additionally, the mechanical parameters do not decrease during long-term deposition in borehole-like conditions. By obtaining these results, it was possible to design slurry whose cement sheath has high corrosion resistance. The new slurry has a lower water-cement ratio. Additionally, GS anti-migration copolymer, anti-filter additive and latex are used. The presence of n-SiO2 aqueous soluti... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 5-methyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one, EDLCs, non-aqueous electrolytes, sustainable solvents
The most relevant electrolytes used in commercial electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are based on non-aqueous solvents as acetonitrile (ACN) and propylene carbonate (PC). However, these solvents are synthesized from non-renewable fossil feedstocks, making it desirable to develop more sustainable alternatives. To address this issue, in this work lactic acid was used to synthesize a panel of substances with small structural variation. The investigated products belong to the chemical family of ketals, and among them the 5-methyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one (LA-H,H) was found to be the most suitable to prepare electrolytic solutions. Therefore, LA-H,H was combined with triethylmethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEMABF4), and analyzed in symmetrical EDLC. This electrolyte was thoroughly characterized by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycles and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), disclosing competitive performances compared to PC-based electrolyte. The EDLC with LA-H,H/TEMABF4 di... [more]

Keywords: biomass waste derived catalyst, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), glycerol carbonate production, mass and heat transfer, Process Intensification
The process and energy intensifications for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate (GC) from glycerol and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) using an eggshell-derived CaO heterogeneous catalyst were investigated. The transesterification reaction between glycerol and DMC was typically limited by mass transfer because of the immiscible nature of the reactants. By varying the stirring speed, it was observed that the mass transfer limitation could be neglected at 800 rpm. The presence of the CaO solid catalyst made the mass transport-limited reaction process more prominent. Mass transfer intensification using a simple kitchen countertop blender as an alternative to overcome the external mass transfer limitation of a typical magnetic stirrer was demonstrated. A lower amount of the catalyst and a shorter reaction time were required to achieve 93% glycerol conversion or 91% GC yield, and the turnover frequency (TOF) increased almost 5 times from 1.5 to 7.2 min−1 when using a conventional magnetic stirrer... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computable general equilibrium, investment, logistics, subsidy, transportation
This study examined the economy-wide effects of reallocating the biofuel subsidy to invest in transportation using a recursive dynamics computable general equilibrium model. The constructed model consists of 35 sectors, 42 commodities, and 3 institutions (household, government, and the rest of the world). Three scenarios were simulated. In the first scenario, the subsidy of gasohol and biodiesel is completely removed, whereas, in the second and third scenarios, half of the removed subsidy is reallocated to finance investment in road freight transportation and road public transportation. The simulation results show that reallocating the biofuel subsidy to invest in road public transportation can lead to the highest long-term economic growth and has the lowest impact on the consumer price index (CPI). All findings suggest that policymakers should maintain continuous investment in transportation and prioritize this investment policy over the fuel price distortion scheme.
A Multidisciplinary Review of Recycling Methods for End-of-Life Wind Turbine Blades
Ebbe Bagge Paulsen, Peter Enevoldsen
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blades, end-of-life, recycling, wind power
Wind energy has seen an increase of almost 500 GW of installed wind power over the past decade. Renewable energy technologies have, over the years, been striving to develop in relation to capacity and size and, simultaneously, though with less focus on, the consequences and challenges that arise when the products achieve end-of-life (EoL). The lack of knowledge and possibilities for the recycling of fiber composites and, thus, the handling of EoL wind turbine blades (WTBs) has created great environmental frustrations. At present, the frustrations surrounding the handling are based on the fact that the most commonly used disposal method is via landfills. No recycling or energy/material recovery is achieved here, making it the least advantageous solution seen from the European Waste Commission’s perspective. The purpose of this research was thus to investigate the current recycling methods and to categorize them based on the waste materials. The opportunities were compared based on proce... [more]
Leakage Vortex Progression through a Guide Vane’s Clearance Gap and the Resulting Pressure Fluctuation in a Francis Turbine

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clearance gap, leakage vortex, pressure pulsation, rotor stator interaction
A clearance gap (CG) between guide vanes (GVs) and facing plates exists at both ends of a Francis turbine and allows the opening angle to be adjusted for varying operating conditions. Leakage flow is induced through this gap due to the pressure difference between the two sides of the guide vanes. While some research works have used qualitative approaches to visualize and predict the strength of a leakage vortex (LV), this paper presents a method for quantifying vortices along a trajectory. In this paper, a prototype high-head Francis runner with specific speed of 85.4 is considered as a reference case. A systematic investigation across both space and time is carried out, i.e., analysis of the spatial temporal progression of LV for three operating conditions. While travelling from the CG to runner leading edge, LV evolution and trajectory data are observed and the values of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy are calculated for the LV trajectory. Frequency spectrum analyses of pressu... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: channel sidewall engineering, GaN etching, ICP-RIE dry etching, Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), UV light, vertical GaN FinFET
This paper proposes a new technique to engineer the Fin channel in vertical GaN FinFET toward a straight and smooth channel sidewall. Consequently, the GaN wet etching in the TMAH solution is detailed; we found that the m-GaN plane has lower surface roughness than crystallographic planes with other orientations, including the a-GaN plane. The grooves and slope (Cuboids) at the channel base are also investigated. The agitation does not assist in Cuboid removal or crystallographic planes etching rate enhancement. Finally, the impact of UV light on m and a-GaN crystal plane etching rates in TMAH has been studied with and without UV light. Accordingly, it is found that the m-GaN plane etching rate is enhanced from 0.69 to 1.09 nm/min with UV light; in the case of a-GaN plane etching, UV light enhances the etching rate from 2.94 to 4.69 nm/min.

Keywords: heat map, roof usable area, rooftop pv system, solar electricity
The installation of rooftop PV systems in residential buildings and dwellings has increased rapidly in the past decade, and these systems have become a major source of renewable energy in many countries. This paper presents a new method of estimating the potential of rooftop PV systems to meet energy demands in residential districts by introducing a roof suitability factor. The method of assessment is based on an online tool called SunSPot, which uses a solar radiation heat map layer of building roofs and the PVSYST solar performance software. A sample of 400 houses from four suburbs considered in the Sydney City Council 2030 sustainability plan was selected to conduct the performance analysis of rooftop PV systems and develop a formula that can estimate the suburban annual energy production. The results show that if the dwelling roofs in residential suburbs could be covered by PV arrays it would produce enough electricity to exceed the local electricity demand and, in some suburbs, a... Energy and Exergy (2E) Analysis of an Optimized Solar Field of Linear Fresnel Reflectors for a Conceptual Direct Steam Generation Power Plant
Eduardo González-Mora, Ma. Dolores Durán-García
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct steam generation, efficiency, Energy, Exergy, linear Fresnel reflector
Direct steam generation is a promising alternative to conventional heat transfer fluids for solar thermal power plants using linear concentrators because water and steam do not have thermal and chemical stability problems. The novelty of this study, an energy and exergy (2E) analysis, was that it was performed on several configurations of a conceptual direct steam generation solar power plant with optimized Fresnel reflectors in Agua Prieta, Mexico coupled with a regenerative steam Rankine power cycle to quantify their efficiency and establish a reference for future implementation of this technology in concentrated solar power plants in Mexico. The thermal model was assumed to be a 1D steady-state flow and validated against results in the literature. It was then applied directly to a case study to determine the size of the solar field. The design point was the lowest solar irradiance day, and evaluating the solar multiple with the highest solar irradiance, taking care not to oversize t... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass gasification, downdraft, hydro-char, phenomenological model, Syngas
The development of a one-dimensional (1D) phenomenological model for biomass gasification in downdraft reactors is presented in this study; the model was developed with the aim of highlighting the main advantages and limits related to feedstocks that are different from woodchip, such as hydro-char derived from the hydrothermal carbonization of green waste, or a mix of olive pomace and sawdust. An experimental validation of the model is performed. The numerically evaluated temperature evolution along the reactor gasifier is found to be in agreement with locally measured values for all the considered biomasses. The model captures the pressure drop along the reactor axis, despite an underestimation with respect to the performed measurements. The producer gas composition resulting from the numerical model at the exit section is in quite good agreement with gas-chromatograph analyses (12% maximum error for CO and CO2 species), although the model predicts lower methane and hydrogen content i... Keywords: combustion engines, vehicle, vibroacoustic response
The article presents the results of research on the vibroacoustic response of internal combustion engines mounted in a vehicle. The vehicles studied belong to popular models, which became available in successive versions. Each group included vehicles of the same model of an older generation (equipped with a naturally aspirated engine) and of a newer generation, including downsized (and turbocharged) engines. Tests in each group were carried out under repeatable conditions on a chassis-load dynamometer. The vibrations were measured using single-axis accelerometers mounted on the steering wheel, engine, and driver’s head restraint mounting. The primary purpose of the study was to verify whether the new generations of vehicles equipped with additional high-speed elements (compressors) generate additional harmonics (especially those within the range potentially affecting travel comfort and human health) and whether there are significant changes in the distribution of spectral power density... Innovative Method for Calculating the Break-Even for Multi-Assortment Production
Dariusz Fuksa
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mines, multi-assortment break-even, percentage threshold
The subject of the article is a new method that I have developed for calculating a multi-asset break-even for multi-assortment production, extended by a percentage threshold and a current sales ratio (which was missing in previously published methods). The percentage threshold provides unambiguous information about the economic health of a company. As a result, it became possible to use it in practice to evaluate the activities of economic entities (mines) and to perform modelling and optimisation of production plans based on different variants of customer demand scenarios. The publication addresses the complexity of the problem of determining the break-even in multi-assortment production. Moreover, it discusses the practical limitations of previous methods and demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed method on the example of hard coal mines.

Keywords: D-STATCOM, distributed resources, grid operation, low voltage grids, optimal placement, renewable energies integration, smart grids
In low-voltage grids with a wide spread of domestic and/or small commercial consumers, mostly single-phase, problems can appear due to unbalanced power consumption between the different phases. These problems are mainly caused due to voltage unbalances between phases and the increase in distribution losses. This phenomenon occurs more frequently at the end of highly radial grids and can be stressed by the installation of renewable generators next to the consumers. Amongst the various techniques that have been proposed to solve this problem, this article explores the use of a D-STATCOM, presenting and testing a new method for the optimal location of this type of D-FACT. The developed method starts from a detailed analysis of the existing voltage unbalances in a distribution network and identifies the optimal location of the D-STATCOM (i.e., the one that reduces these unbalances while reducing energy losses). The developed method has been successfully tested for one year at four real Eur... [more]
