Diazotrophic Behaviour in a Non-Sterile Bioreactor: The Effect of O2-Availability
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: ATP down-regulation, bio-fertilizer, diazotrophs, nitrogen fixation
The behaviour of a locally isolated diazotrophic consortium was investigated with the prospect of agricultural applications. A repeatable culture was obtained in a non-sterile bioreactor. Metagenomic analysis indicated Chryseobacterium ssp. and Flavobacterium ssp. were the dominant species, making up approximately 50% of the microbial community. The oxygen supply was varied and mass-transfer limited growth was attained under all experimental conditions. Negligible amounts of aqueous metabolites were formed, indicating a high selectivity towards biomass production. High oxygen availability resulted in decreased growth efficiencies i.e., the specific energy requirements for biomass synthesis. This was attributed to reduced electron transport chain efficiencies and nitrogenase protection mechanisms. Mass and energy balances indicated that sessile biomass with a high C:N served as a carbon sink. The most efficient growth was measured at an aeration feed composition of 21% oxygen and 79% ni... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biorefinery, biosurfactant, Fermentation, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, rhamnolipid
Palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) are used by P. aeruginosa PAO1 to produce rhamnolipid biosurfactant. The process of fermentation producing of biosurfactant was structured in a 2 L bioreactor using 2% of PFAD and FAME as carbon sources in minimal medium and with a nitrogen concentration of 1 g L−1. Mass spectrometry results show the crude biosurfactant produced was predominantly monorhamnolipid (Rha-C10-C10) and dirhamnolipid (Rha-Rha-C10-C10) at 503 and 649 m/z value for both substrates. Maximum production of crude rhamnolipid for PFAD was 1.06 g L−1 whereas for FAME it was 2.1 g L−1, with a reduction in surface tension of Tris-HCl pH 8.0 solution to 28 mN m−1 and a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 26 mg L−1 measured for both products. Furthermore, the 24 h emulsification indexes in kerosene, hexadecane, sunflower oil, and rapeseed oil using 1 g L−1 of crude rhamnolipid were in the range 20−50%. Consequently, PFAD and FAME, by-products from t... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: AGE inhibitory activity, citral, deterioration inhibitory effect, food preservative, functional ingredients, immature persimmon
Immature persimmons are unripe fruits that are cut off during the persimmon cultivation process and immediately discarded, amounting to an annual fruit loss of approximately 100 to 400 kg per 1000 m2. The purpose of this study was to make effective use of unused resources, namely, immature persimmons, and attempt to use them as food additives. In this study, we studied the Tone Wase (fully astringent persimmon) and Fuyu (fully sweet persimmon) cultivars. As a result, we performed a component analysis of the immature persimmons, isolating 12 compounds, of which two were newly identified. Differences in the components and their contents were found between cultivars and between the peel and flesh. To effectively use immature persimmons as food for the elderly, we searched for active substances that inhibit AGE formation and found that extracts of immature persimmons and isolated compounds showed high activity. In particular, high activity was observed for catechin and its polymeric form,... [more]

Resonance Analysis and Vibration Reduction Optimization of Agricultural Machinery Frame—Taking Vegetable Precision Seeder as an Example
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: field experiment, finite element method, modal test, Optimization, vibration characteristics
In order to solve the problem of vigorous vibration of agricultural machinery frames, taking a vegetable precision seeder as an example, the concept of vibration reduction was proposed. The modal analysis of the frame was carried out, and the accuracy of the finite element model was verified by comparing the modal test of multipoint input and multipoint output (MIMO) and simulation results. Additionally, the main frequency of engine vibration was the main excitation source of frame resonance. According to the modal shapes, it was proposed to increase the fixed beam structure and to carry out simulation tests. The time-domain signal of the maximum deformation position in the first-order vibration mode was measured, and the vibration spectrum analysis maps before and after optimization were obtained by Fourier transform. A field experiment showed that the seeding quality of the whole machine was significantly improved after optimization. This study provides a reference for the analysis o... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: bioactive compounds, Fermentation, functional food, prebiotic, probiotic, seaweed
Seaweeds are gaining momentum as novel and functional food and feed products. From whole consumption to small bioactive compounds, seaweeds have remarkable flexibility in their applicability, ranging from food production to fertilizers or usages in chemical industries. Regarding food production, there is an increasing interest in the development of novel foods that, at the same time, present high nutritious content and are sustainably developed. Seaweeds, because they require no arable land, no usage of fresh water, and they have high nutritious and bioactive content, can be further explored for the development of newer and functional food products. Fermentation, especially performed by lactic acid bacteria, is a method used to produce functional foods. However, fermentation of seaweed biomass remains an underdeveloped topic that nevertheless demonstrates high potential for the production of new alimentary products that hold and further improve the organoleptic and beneficial propertie... Joint Power and Channel Optimization of Agricultural Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Hybrid Deep Reinforcement Learning
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: channel allocation, DDPG, mixed variable, power control
The reduction of maintenance costs in agricultural wireless sensor networks (WSNs) requires reducing energy consumption. At the same time, care should be taken not to affect communication quality and network lifetime. This paper studies a joint optimization algorithm for transmitted power and channel allocation based on deep reinforcement learning. First, an optimization model to measure network reward was established under the constraint of the signal-to-interference plus-noise-ratio (SINR) threshold, which includes continuous power variables and discrete channel variables. Secondly, considering the dynamic changes of agricultural WSNs, the network control is described as a Markov decision process with continuous state and action space. A deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) reinforcement learning scheme suitable for mixed variables was designed. This method could obtain a control scheme that maximizes network reward by means of black-box optimization for continuous transmitted p... [more]

Thermal Devolatilization Kinetics of Dry Distiller’s Grains with Solubles (DDGS)
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: DDGS, devolatilization, kinetics, pyrolysis, TGA
Dynamic thermogravimetric analysis is applied to investigate the thermal devolatilization of dry distiller’s grain with solubles (DDGS), the major by-product of bioethanol plants. Compared with lignocellulosic biomass, the DDGS devolatilization occurs over a much wider temperature range and with slower rates. This reveals complex dynamics attributable to a peculiar chemical composition comprising, in addition to lignocellulose, proteins, starch and other minor components. The evolution of lumped volatile product classes is well described by a five-step reaction mechanism. The numerical solution of the ordinary differential equations together with a minimization of the objective function leads to activation energies invariant with the heating rate. The estimated values of 89, 120, 158, 102 and 113 kJ/mol are, on average, higher than those obtained under oxidative environments but still lower than those typically estimated for wood.

Process-Induced Modifications on Quality Attributes of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) Flour
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: cassava, cassava utilization, flour, processing variables, starch, tuber crops
Cassava flour (CF) is a suitable representative and one of the easiest shelf-stable food products of the edible portion of the highly perishable cassava root (Manihot esculenta Crantz). The quality and type of CF are dependent on processing variables. Broadly categorized into fermented and unfermented CF, unfermented CF is white, odorless, and bland, while fermented CF has a sour flavor accompanied by its characteristic odor. The use of fermented CF as a composite is limited because of their off-odors. Modifications in CF processing have given rise to prefixes such as: modified, unmodified, gelatinized, fortified, native, roasted, malted, wet, and dry. Consumed alone, mostly in reconstituted dough form with soups, CF may also serve as a composite in the processing of various flour-based food products. Fermenting with microorganisms such as Rhizopus oryzae and Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in a significant increase in the protein content and a decrease in the cyanide content of CF. H... [more]

Study of Static and Dynamic Behavior of a Membrane Reactor for Hydrogen Production
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
The paper investigates the stability and bifurcation phenomena that can occur in membrane reactors for the production of hydrogen by ammonia decomposition. A simplified mixed model of the membrane reactor is studied and two expressions of hydrogen permeation are investigated. The effect of the model design and operating parameters on the existence of steady state multiplicity is discussed. In this regard, it is shown that the adsorption-inhibition effect caused by the competitive adsorption of ammonia can lead to the occurrence of multiple steady states in the model. The steady state multiplicity exists for a wide range of feed ammonia concentration and reactor residence time. The effect of the adsorption constant, the membrane surface area and its permeability on the steady state multiplicity is delineated. The analysis also shows that no Hopf bifurcation can occur in the studied model.

Expression of Selected microRNAs in Migraine: A New Class of Possible Biomarkers of Disease?
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biomarker, CGRP, headache, miRNA, pain
Preliminary but convergent findings suggest a role for microRNAs (miRNAs) in the generation and maintenance of chronic pain and migraine. Initial observations showed that serum levels of miR-382-5p and miR-34a-5p expression were increased in serum during the migraine attack, with miR-382-5p increasing in the interictal phase as well. By contrast, miR-30a-5p levels were lower in migraine patients compared to healthy controls. Of note, antimigraine treatments proved to be capable of influencing the expression of these miRNAs. Altogether, these observations suggest that miRNAs may represent migraine biomarkers, but several points are yet to be elucidated. A major concern is that these miRNAs are altered in a broad spectrum of painful and non-painful conditions, and thus it is not possible to consider them as truly “migraine-specific” biomarkers. We feel that these miRNAs may represent useful tools to uncover and define different phenotypes across the migraine spectrum with different treat... [more]
