Load Control by Demand Side Management to Support Grid Stability in Building Clusters
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building cluster, demand side management, energy flexible buildings, grid stability, load shifting, multi-agent based, residual load, substation
Increasing numbers of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps in existing building clusters can lead to an overload of the associated electric grid substations. Based on a multi-agent-based simulation of three building cluster types the impact of building flexibility in regard to the residual substation load is studied. Each building announces its available flexibility, e.g., “heat pump can be switched off/on”. A cluster master coordinator evaluates the incoming offers and decides which offers are accepted in regard to the substation’s capacity utilization. The goal is to honour the substation’s limit by shifting the residual load. This paper presents results from three typical urban building clusters for different penetration scenarios in regard to heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, batteries and electric vehicles. It is shown that in the studied building clusters a high penetration of heat pumps and photovoltaic systems can violate the existing substation’s limits, regardless of the effor... [more]

Variable Bandwidth Adaptive Course Keeping Control Strategy for Unmanned Surface Vehicle
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, course keeping, input saturation, unmanned surface vehicle
This paper proposes a new and original course keeping control strategy for an unmanned surface vehicle in the presence of modeling error, external disturbance and input saturation. The trajectory linearization control method is used as the basic algorithm to design the course keeping strategy, and the radial basis function neural network and disturbance observer are used to compensate modeling error and external disturbance respectively to enhance the robustness of the control system. Moreover, a robust term is used to compensate various compensation errors to further improve the robustness of the system. In addition, hyperbolic tangent function and Nussbaum function are hired to deal with the potential input saturation problem, and the neural shunting model is adopted to avoid the computational explosion caused by the derivation of virtual control law. Taking the above facts into account will help to further realize engineering practice. Finally, the control strategy proposed in this... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG), load frequency control (LFC), multi-area power systems, rotor angle deviations
The main purpose of this paper is to enhance the operation of renewable wind energy conversion (WEC) systems connected to power systems. To achieve this, we consider a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control approach for regulating the effects of a WEC system with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) on the synchronous generator (SG) rotor speed of the interconnected power system. First, we present the mathematical formulation of the interconnected power system comprises a single synchronous generator and a wind turbine with DFIG connected to an infinite bus bar system through a transmission line. We consider that the system is operated under various loading conditions and parameters variation. Second, a frequency damping oscillation observer is designed via Kalman filtering together with an optimal linear quadratic regulator to mitigate the impacts of the WEC system on the SG rotor speed. The performance of the developed interconnected power system is simulated using a MATLAB/SIMULIN... [more]

Dynamic-Model-Based AGC Frequency Control Simulation Method for Korean Power System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatic generation control (AGC), dynamic deadband, energy management system (EMS), frequency control, governor response
To fulfill the need of operating power systems more effectively through diverse resources, frequency control conditions for maintaining a balance between generators and loads need to be provided accurately. As frequency control is generally achieved via the governor responses from local generators and the automatic generation control (AGC) frequency control of the central energy management system, it is important to coordinate these two mechanisms of frequency control efficiently. This paper proposes a dynamic-model-based AGC frequency control simulation method that can be designed and analyzed using the governor responses of generators, which are represented through dynamic models in the planning stage. In the proposed simulation model, the mechanism of the AGC frequency control is implemented based on the dynamic models of the power system, including governors and generators; hence, frequency responses from the governors and AGC can be sequentially simulated to coordinate and operate... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cooling load, economizer, energy saving, field study, hospital, outdoor air fraction
In commercial buildings, HVAC systems are becoming a primary driver of energy consumption, which already account for 45% of the total building energy consumption. In the previous literature, researchers have studied several energy conservation measures to reduce HVAC system energy consumption. One of the effective ways is an economizer in air-handling units. Therefore, this study quantified the impact of the outdoor air fraction by economizer control type in cooling system loads based on actual air-handling unit operation data in a hospital. The optimal outdoor air fraction and energy performance for economizer control types were calculated and analyzed. The result showed that economizer controls using optimal outdoor air fraction were up to 45% more efficient in cooling loads than existing HVAC operations in the hospital. The energy savings potential was 6−14% of the differential dry-bulb temperature control, 17−27% of the differential enthalpy control, 8−17% of the differential dry-b... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic load, flutter suppression, H∞ controller, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, hydraulic transmission system, linear matrix inequality, pitch control, real-time flow control
Vibration and real-time flow control of the 2D blade section of wind turbines with three degrees of freedom (3-DOF), excited by external pitch motion, are investigated based on an H-inf (H∞) controller using linear-matrix-inequality (HIC/LMI) design. The real-time flow control for the purpose of aeroelastic flutter suppression includes not only the driving process of real-time physical equipment, but also the realization of real-time control algorithm in the physical controller. The aeroelastic system combined with pitch motion is controlled by a kind of HIC/LMI algorithm. The real-time external pitch motion is driven by rack-piston cylinder (RPC) using a hydraulic transmission system (HTS). The unsteady aerodynamic loads model is simplified by the HTS system. Model Predictive Virtual Synchronous Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator-Based Wind Power System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cost function, Model Predictive Control, virtual synchronous generator, wind power
As much wind power is integrated into the power grid through power electronic equipment, the use of wind power is increased rapidly. Wind power system makes the power grid lack inertia and damping, thereby reducing power grid stability; in severe cases, it may even be disconnected. virtual synchronous generator (VSG) has been put forward to enhance the anti-disturbance performance of power grid. However, conventional VSG adopts an outer power loop and inner-current loop control. The inner-current loop control needs a pulse width modulation (PWM) module and proportion integration (PI) parameter settings. In order to reduce the parameter settings and simplify control structures, in this study, model predictive control (MPC) is used instead of inner-current loop control. At the same time—for the overall stability and control flexibility of the back-to-back system—we further propose to use outer-voltage loop control (OVLC) and MPC to stabilize direct current (DC) voltage on the machine-sid... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Bresenham’s algorithm, discriminate regions, integer discriminants, spatial straight line
A novelty algorithm of spatial straight-line drawing based on a method of discriminate regions is proposed in this paper based on Bresenham’s algorithm. Three-dimensional space is divided into innumerable three-dimensional meshes according to the given rule; the distance between the start and the end points of the three coordinates is Δx, Δy, and Δz, respectively; the distribution types of spatial straight line and the position of the end point are determined by judging the relationship among Δx, Δy, and Δz; then, the active-passive directions can be determined. The plane of the ending point of the straight line in a three-dimensional mesh is divided into four regions; then, the discriminant is obtained; and this discriminant determine which region the point is located in The algorithm is verified and analyzed by the method of contrastive analysis; the results show that: the error of the algorithm is related to the step length L; the maximum theoretical error is 0.7071*L. Predictive Set Point Modulation Charging of Autonomous Rail Transit Vehicles
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ART, multiple chargers, overshoot, set point modulation, supercapacitor
Autonomous rail transit (ART) vehicle is a new type of urban rail transportation, which has good development prospects. It is powered by onboard supercapacitors, which are charged at midway stations. It requires short charging time and fast charging speed. Usually, multiple chargers are used in parallel for charging. However, this will cause an overshoot phenomenon during charging, and the overshoot of multiple chargers will be superimposed on the supercapacitor, affecting the stability and life of both supercapacitors and chargers. In this paper, we propose a predictive set point modulation charging method, which can reduce the system’s overshoot and increase the reliability of the system. First, the state-space averaging method is used to establish the electronic physical model of the multicharger system. Secondly, a predictive set point modulation charging control method is designed, and the closed-loop model of the proposed charging system is developed using the buck diagram. The e... [more]

Decomposed Iterative Optimal Power Flow with Automatic Regionalization
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatic regionalization, decomposed iterative algorithm, optimal power flow
The optimal power flow (OPF) problem plays an important role in power system operation and control. The problem is nonconvex and NP-hard, hence global optimality is not guaranteed and the complexity grows exponentially with the size of the system. Therefore, centralized optimization techniques are not suitable for large-scale systems and an efficient decomposed implementation of OPF is highly demanded. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient method to decompose the entire system into multiple sub-systems based on automatic regionalization and acquire the OPF solution across sub-systems via a modified MATPOWER solver. The proposed method is implemented in a modified solver and tested on several IEEE Power System Test Cases. The performance is shown to be more appealing compared with the original solver.

Fault Diagnosis of Traction Transformer Based on Bayesian Network
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: association rules, Bayesian network, conditional probability, fault diagnosis, traction transformer
As the core equipment of a traction power supply system, the traction transformer is very important to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system. At present, the three-ratio method is mainly used to distinguish transformer faults, whereas such a method has some defects, such as insufficient coding and over-general fault classification. At the same time, on-site maintenance personnel make an empirical judgment based on various test data, which is subjective and uncertain to a certain extent. For cases with multiple abnormal data and relatively complex conditions, on-site personnel often need to discuss and even dismantle the transformer to identify the fault, which is time-consuming and costly. In order to improve the effect of fault diagnosis for traction transformer, this paper uses Bayesian network to correlate the cause and effect of various tests and faults. By combining the results of field tests, the fault is diagnosed by the causal probability of the Bayesian network,... [more]

New Sensorless Speed Control of a Hybrid Stepper Motor Based on Fuzzy Sliding Mode Observer
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy control, sensorless speed control, sliding mode observer, stepper motor
Stepper motors are widely used in industrial and consumer applications due to low-cost, high reliability, and open-loop control capability. Though open-loop features a simple structure, it bears low step resolution, high torque ripple, and low energy efficiency. To improve the performance without increasing hardware cost, a fuzzy sliding mode observer (SMO)-based new sensorless speed control structure is proposed. Unlike the conventional sensorless speed control, it does not use Park and inverse Park transformations to transform currents between a-b and d-q coordinates. Instead, it uses a new current transformation method to generate reference currents of stator windings, which not only reduces the calculation burden of the controller, but also improves the stability of the system. To reduce the chattering, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) embedded into the SMO is designed to adjust the observer gain adaptively, without using the conventional method that replaces the discontinuous sign f... As the integration of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems on modern power networks continues to expand, challenges have appeared in different fields of the network architecture. In the Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field, software and toolboxes are expected to be modified to meet the new network characteristics. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy saving, metro train, Model Predictive Control, online, switched-mode dynamical systems
With the rapid development of urban rail transit systems and the consequent sharp increase of energy consumption, the energy-saving train operation problem has been attracting much attention. Extensive studies have been devoted to optimal control of a single metro train in an inter-station run to minimize the energy consumption. However, most of the existing work focuses on offline optimization of the energy-saving driving strategy, which still needs to be tracked in real train operation. In order to attain better performance in the presence of disturbances, this paper studies the online optimization problem of the energy-saving driving strategy for a single metro train, by employing the model predictive control (MPC) approach. Firstly, a switched-mode dynamical system model is introduced to describe the dynamics of a metro train. Based on this model, an MPC-based online optimization problem is formulated for obtaining the optimal mode switching times with minimal energy consumption fo... [more]

Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: microgrid, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective, multi-stack, PEM fuel cell
This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation, operating and maintenance costs, as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature, the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical, their levels of degradation, in general, will not be. Thus, over time, each stack can present a different behavior. Therefore, the power control strategy cannot be based o... [more]

Virtual Pressure Sensor for Electronic Expansion Valve Control in a Vapor Compression Refrigeration System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electronic expansion valve, model in the loop, vapor compression refrigeration, virtual pressure sensor
Virtual sensor technology, which uses simulation models/algorithms to calculate a value to represent an unmeasured variable or replace a directly measured reading, has attracted many studies in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry. However, most virtual sensor technologies are developed for fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) purposes, which generally compare the virtual sensor values with actual measured values to detect if any fault occurred and identify the causes that led to the fault. It is rare to see studies focus on control performance of virtual sensors after substituting an actual sensor. This is particularly important for the system with no redundant sensor since a virtual sensor is the most effective way to operate the system in the desirable region when any sensor failure occurs. To address this gap, this paper develops a new virtual pressure sensor technology to substitute the actual pressure measurement for electronic expansion... [more]

Impact of Building Orientation on Daylight Availability and Energy Savings Potential in an Academic Classroom
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: daylight and building orientation, daylight availability in building, energy savings for lighting, LENI, lighting control, lighting efficiency
In this paper, daylight availability depending on building orientation in a typical educational classroom was investigated. Measurements of daylight illuminance distributions in the room depth for different illuminance outside the building allowed to determine the conditions when the luminaires in a classroom could be turned off, turned on, or dimmed. The outdoor daylight illuminance on the south-east and north façade of the building was recorded and the numbers of hours per year of university activity during which the lighting had to be switched on (up to 100% or brightened) were determined. Based on these numbers and luminaires powers the electricity consumption for lighting was estimated. It was proven that by using dimming control depending on daylight distribution in a room, comparable energy savings could be achieved for different building orientations. These savings of over 30% were greater than through the implementation of on/off control which, for a south-east oriented classr... [more]

A Powerful Build-Up Rate (BUR) Prediction Method for the Static Push-the-Bit Rotary Steerable System (RSS)

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: beam column theory, bottom-hole assembly (BHA), build-up rate (BUR) prediction, drill bit-rock interaction model, mechanical model, rotary steerable system (RSS), static push-the-bit
The RSS has been widely used in directional drilling. In order to enhance wellpath control accuracy and efficiency of the static push-the-bit RSS, a powerful BUR prediction method is reconstructed by coupling a rotary steerable bottom-hole assembly (RSBHA) mechanical model and a drill bit−rock interaction model. This article showed that when establishing the RSBHA mechanical model by using the continuous beam column method, the steering rib should be treated as an eccentric stabilizer to consider the contact effect between the steering rib and wellbore wall. For the beam column containing the flexible sub and between two stabilizers, it should be rearranged into three beam columns, and the lower and upper steps of the flexible sub should be considered as virtual supports. The equilibrium tendency method (ETM) to predict the BUR can enhance wellpath prediction accuracy than those of traditional methods. Under 3D conditions, the total drilling tendency angle should be denoted by inclinat... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Buck-Boost DC-DC converters, constant power loads, DC micro-grids, Model Predictive Control, PID Type-III voltage-mode compensation, reference governor
Power distribution systems nowadays are highly penetrated by renewable energy sources, and this explains the dominant role of power electronic converters in their operation. However, the presence of multiple power electronic conversion units gives rise to the so-called phenomenon of Constant Power Loads (CPLs), which poses a serious stability challenge in the overall operation of a DC micro-grid. This article addresses the problem of enhancing the stability margin of boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters employed in DC micro-grids under uncertain mixed load conditions. This is done with a recently proposed methodology that relies on a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) controller, comprised by a voltage-mode Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) (Type-III) primary controller and a reference governor (RG) secondary controller. This complementary scheme adjusts the imposed voltage reference dynamically and is designed in an optimal fashion via the Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology b... [more]

Technical Measures to Mitigate Load Fluctuation for Large-Scale Customers to Improve Power System Energy Efficiency
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatic generation control, load fluctuation, load frequency control, operating reserve
Industrial equipment such as electric arc furnaces and steel mills are often associated with rapid and high load disturbances, so their power systems require additional control equipment to limit the frequency. However, proper ancillary service fees are not paid in these cases with extreme and variable load demands. The frequency regulation reserve equipment adds to power generation costs. Therefore, variable power generation loads lead to increases in the cost of energy production. We propose a load frequency control method that is applied on the customer end instead of the power supply end to reduce the operating reserve required to improve the energy efficiency of the power system. We analyzed the load fluctuation of steel mill customers using real data sampled at two-second intervals from the energy management system in Korea. We developed an automatic generation control program to simulate the power system’s frequency characteristics. We also propose compensation techniques for mi... [more]

A Novel Cascaded Multilevel Converter Topology Based on Three-Phase Cells—CHB-SDC
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CHB, CHB-SDC, Model Predictive Control, multilevel converter, OPAL, real-time, STATCOM
This paper proposes a new cascaded multilevel converter topology based on three-phase H bridge cells with a common DC-link structure. The proposed multilevel converter topology main advantages, compared with literature renowned multilevel converters topologies, are discussed in the paper, such as modularity, construction, implementation cost, and DC voltage ripple mitigation. Despite presenting an elementary structure and easy implementation, the use of classic PWM switching strategies is not feasible for this topology, causing the appearance of several short-circuit states between its capacitors. Thus, a graph theory algorithm combined with a model predictive control is also proposed in this work to identify and avoid the new cascaded multilevel converter short-circuit switching states and, concomitantly, guaranteeing the converter output power quality.
