April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed power generation, photovoltaic systems, power distribution, power quality, power system analysis computing, power system measurements, reactive power, reverse power flow, voltage fluctuations, voltage regulation
Reverse power flow from a photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system causes a voltage rise. A relative study regarding the reduction in the distribution feeder voltage depending on system conditions and the magnitude of reverse power flow has been conducted. Several methods for mitigating voltage rise have been proposed; however, the influence of these methods on the voltage in the distribution system, where the voltage is reduced due to reverse power flow, remains to be determined. In this study, the effect of constant power factor control in low-voltage PV systems, which are widely used as voltage rise countermeasures in distribution systems, was analyzed under the condition that the distribution line voltage decreases due to reverse power flow. Consequently, the constant power factor control of the low-voltage distribution system was found to adversely reduce voltage in the medium voltage distribution system due to the consumption of lagging reactive power by the PV systems.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control gain, DFIG, higher-order sliding mode, sub-synchronous control interaction mitigation
Sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI) is an oscillation phenomenon caused by the interaction of converter control and series-compensated transmission line. This paper proposes a novel adaptive higher-order sliding mode (AHOSM) control strategy for damping the SSCI of a series-compensated DFIG-based wind power system. On the basis of system modeling and oscillation mechanism analysis, SSCI suppression is converted to the current tracking control problem. Firstly, an auxiliary feedback control is employed for the nonlinear series-compensated system, then integral sliding mode functions are defined to design a second-order sliding mode control law for the equivalent system. Adaptive laws for the control gains are then conceived based on the Lyapunov function considering unknown upper bounds of uncertainty derivatives. System stability is also analyzed in detail along with adaptive laws’ design. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified under different series-compen... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Indirect Matrix Converter, photovoltaic systems, Power Quality, sliding mode control, Smart Grids, Unified Power Quality Conditioner
This paper proposes an Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC)-based grid-tied Photovoltaic (PV) system for Smart Grids (SGs). The PV array injects current in the ‘dc link’ of the IMC through an inductive link, and is connected to the SG with shunt and series connections, allowing for the compensation of current- and voltage-related Power Quality (PQ) issues, respectively, for the sensitive loads and the SG connection. A direct sliding mode-based controller is proposed to guarantee nearly sinusoidal currents in the connection to the SG, and sinusoidal voltages guaranteeing compliance with international standards, when supplying the sensitive loads. Additionally, a novel control approach for the ‘dc link’ voltage is synthesised to allow for the control of both the PV array current and the power flow to the SG. To guarantee the semiconductors safe commutation an asynchronous commutation strategy is derived. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed system significantly improves... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, HVAC control, occupancy prediction, thermal comfort
Occupancy-aware heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control offers the opportunity to reduce energy use without sacrificing thermal comfort. Residential HVAC systems often use manually-adjusted or constant setpoint temperatures, which heat and cool the house regardless of whether it is needed. By incorporating occupancy-awareness into HVAC control, heating and cooling can be used for only those time periods it is needed. Yet, bringing this technology to fruition is dependent on accurately predicting occupancy. Non-probabilistic prediction models offer an opportunity to use collected occupancy data to predict future occupancy profiles. Smart devices, such as a connected thermostat, which already include occupancy sensors, can be used to provide a continually growing collection of data that can then be harnessed for short-term occupancy prediction by compiling and creating a binary occupancy prediction. Real occupancy data from six homes located in Colorado is analyzed and... [more]

Keywords: frequency control, improved harmony search, metaheuristic algorithm, Mongolian power system, optimisation, under-frequency load shedding
The Altai-Uliastai regional power system (AURPS) is a regional power system radially interconnected to the power system of Mongolia. The 110 kV interconnection is exceptionally long and susceptible to frequent trips because of weather conditions. The load-rich and low-inertia AURPS must be islanded during interconnection outages, and the under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) scheme must act to ensure secure operation. Traditional UFLS over-sheds local demand, negatively affecting the local population, especially during the cold Mongolian winter season. This research paper proposes a novel methodology to optimally calculate the settings of the UFLS scheme, where each parameter of the scheme is individually adjusted to minimise the total amount of disconnected load. This paper presents a computationally efficient methodology that is illustrated in a specially created co-simulation environment (DIgSILENT® PowerFactoryTM + Python). The results demonstrate an outstanding performance of the p... [more]

Keywords: algorithm, classification, energy management strategy, hybrid electric vehicles, Optimization
The energy management strategy (EMS) and control algorithm of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) directly determine its energy efficiency, control effect, and system reliability. For a certain configuration of an HEV powertrain, the challenge is to develop an efficient EMS and an appropriate control algorithm to satisfy a variety of development objectives while not reducing vehicle performance. In this research, a comprehensive, multi-level classification for HEVs is introduced in detail from the aspects of the degree of hybridization (DoH), the position of the motor, the components and configurations of the powertrain, and whether or not the HEV is charged by external power. The principle and research status of EMSs for each type of HEV are summarized and reviewed. Additionally, the EMSs and control algorithms of HEVs are compared and analyzed from the perspectives of characteristics, applications, real-time abilities, and historical development. Finally, some discussions about potential... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automotive, efficient operation, fuel cell, Model Predictive Control, safe operation, successive linearization
In this paper, a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack control study is presented. The goal is to track the transient power demand of a real fuel cell (FC) vehicle while ensuring safe and efficient operation. Due to the dynamically changing power demand, fast transients occur in the internal states of the fuel cell (e.g., pressure, humidity, reactant mass) leading to degradation effects (e.g., high/low membrane overpressure, reactants starvation) which are avoided by imposing safety constraints. Efficiency is considered in terms of internal voltage losses minimization as well as minimization of the power of the compressor used to pressurize the cathode. For solving the optimization problem of power demand tracking, adhering to safety constraints, and maximizing efficiency, model predictive control (MPC) has been chosen. Due to the nonlinearity of the FC system, a successive linearization based MPC (SLMPC) is used to control the FC throughout its operating region. Simulat... [more]

Keywords: demand-side flexibility, heat pump, market design, mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), model predictive control (MPC), peer-to-peer market (P2P), photovoltaics (PV), thermal energy storage
The European Commission calls for more small-scale renewable energy producers to actively participate in the energy value chain. In this study, we model an illustrative peer-to-peer (P2P) market with tariffs based on the reservation prices of market participants under the German levy regime. The study is conducted by modeling representative residential buildings with home energy management systems, modulating heat pumps, and photovoltaics, in combination with electrical and thermal storage systems. The resulting mixed-integer linear program is solved over the course of a year, using a rolling horizon approach with a time resolution of one hour. By analyzing the cost- and discomfort-minimizing behavior of the market participants, we evaluate the current levy regime and propose two additional designs. We find that in the current case, a P2P market is not economically viable. Based on feed-in tariffs (FiT) and levies no agreeable market price can be found. With no FiT or reduced levies, a... [more]

Keywords: coal pillar stability, lateral abutment pressure, model test, MS monitoring system, thick and hard roof, working face width
In the inclination direction, the fracture law of a longwall face roof is very important for roadway control. Based on the W1123 working face mining of Kuangou coal mine, the roof structure, stress and energy characteristics of W1123 were studied by using mechanical analysis, model testing and engineering practice. The results show that when the width of W1123 is less than 162 m, the roof forms a rock beam structure in the inclined direction, the floor pressure is lower, the energy and frequency of microseismic (MS) events are at a low level, and the stability of the section coal pillar is better. When the width of W1123 increases to 172 m, the roof breaks along the inclined direction, forming a double-hinged structure, the floor pressure is increased, and the frequency and energy of MS events also increases. The roof gathers elastic energy release, and combined with the MS energy release speed it can be considered that the stability of the section coal pillar is better. As the width o... [more]

Keywords: adaptive control, intelligent optimizing algorithm, membrane, pressure difference, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
This paper addresses the issues of nonlinearity and coupling between anode pressure and cathode pressure in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) gas supply systems. A fuzzy adaptive PI decoupling control strategy with an improved advanced genetic algorithm (AGA) is proposed. This AGA s utilized to optimize the PI parameters offline, and the fuzzy adaptive algorithm s used to adjust the PI parameters dynamically online to achieve the approximate decoupling control of the PEMFC gas supply system. According to the proposed dynamic model, the PEMFC gas supply system with the fuzzy−AGA−PI decoupling control method was simulated for comparison. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control system can reduce the pressure difference more efficiently with the classical control method under different load changes.

Keywords: online maximum torque per current, optimal control, permanent-magnet synchronous machine, predictive control, torque ripple minimization, trajectory control
This paper presents an extended predictive trajectory control scheme combined with an inner torque ripple minimization considering the current-, flux-linkage-, and voltage-planes of permanent magnet synchronous machines. The extension of a fundamental machine model with flux-linkage harmonics allows the calculation of the inner torque ripple and enables its minimization. For this, the control is divided in two cases: (1) The dynamic operation or large signal behavior which uses the maximal torque gradient for the trajectory strategy during each control period for fastest dynamic operation, and (2) The stationary operation or small signal behavior, utilizing a real time capable polynomial approximation of the rotor position dependent torque hyperbolas (iso-torque curves) of permanent magnet synchronous machines for the ideal torque to current reference values. Since dynamic and steady-state operation is covered, torque to current look-up tables, such as maximum torque per ampere (MTPA)/... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy allocation, hybrid energy storage system, supercapacitor
In this paper, we propose an optimized power distribution method for hybrid electric energy storage systems for electric vehicles (EVs). The hybrid energy storage system (HESS) uses two isolated soft-switching symmetrical half-bridge bidirectional converters connected to the battery and supercapacitor (SC) as a composite structure of the protection structure. The bidirectional converter can precisely control the charge and discharge of the SC and battery. Spiral wound SCs with mesoporous carbon electrodes are used as the energy storage units of EVs. Under the 1050 operating conditions of the EV driving cycle, the SC acts as a “peak load transfer” with a charge and discharge current of 2isc~3ibat. An improved energy allocation strategy under state of charge (SOC) control is proposed, that enables SC to charge and discharge with a peak current of approximately 4ibat. Compared with the pure battery mode, the acceleration performance of the EV is improved by approximately 50%, and the ener... [more]

Keywords: adaptive Takagi-Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy model, hydrokinetic turbine systems, model predictive torque control, permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)
This paper presents a sensorless model predictive torque control strategy based on an adaptive Takagi−Sugeno (T−S) fuzzy model for the design of a six−phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)−based hydrokinetic turbine systems (PMSG-HTs), which not only provides clean electric energy and stable energy-conversion efficiency, but also improves the reliability and robustness of the electricity supply. An adaptive T−S fuzzy model is first formed to characterize the nonlinear system of the PMSG before a model predictive torque controller based on the T−S fuzzy model for the PMSG system is employed to indirectly control the stator current and the stator flux magnitude, which improves the performance in terms of anti−disturbance, and achieves maximum hydropower tracking. Finally, we consider two types of tidal current, namely the mixed semidiurnal tidal current and the northwest European shelf tidal current. April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic stage transition, efficiency, energy injection, inductive power transfer, soft switching condition
An automatic stage transition converter for an inductive power transfer system is presented in this paper. An effective control strategy with two working stages of independent energy injection stage and free resonance stage is employed in the proposed converter. With the automatic stage transition strategy, when the frequency of the resonance network changes, the ending time of the free resonance stage is automatically determined. At the same time, the phase angle of the free resonance stage is automatically set as half a resonant cycle. As the stage transition is not triggered by the switches, the switch motion can be executed in advance of the transition moments. Time margins are offered for every switch in the converter, which make the switching moments of the switches flexible and the control simple. Another feature of this converter is that during the energy injection stage, the energy is injected into the inductor independently. Therefore, the input power can be easily regulated... [more]

Keywords: long short-term memory, solar irradiance, weather prediction
Solar irradiance prediction is significant for maximizing energy-saving effects in the predictive control of buildings. Several models for solar irradiance prediction have been developed; however, they require the collection of weather data over a long period in the predicted target region or evaluation of various weather data in real time. In this study, a long short-term memory algorithm−based model is proposed using limited input data and data from other regions. The proposed model can predict solar irradiance using next-day weather forecasts by the Korea Meteorological Administration and daily solar irradiance, and it is possible to build a model with one-time learning using national and international data. The model developed in this study showed excellent predictive performance with a coefficient of variation of the root mean square error of 12% per year even if the learning and forecast regions were different, assuming that the weather forecast was correct.

Keywords: active power output, control parameters, eigenvalue analysis, full-converter wind, subsynchronous oscillation, weak grids
Active power outputs of a wind farm connected to a weak power grid greatly affect the stability of grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC) systems. This paper studies the impact of active power outputs and control parameters on the subsynchronous oscillation characteristics of full-converter wind farms connected weak power grids. Eigenvalue and participation factor analysis was performed to identify the dominant oscillation modes of the system under consideration. The impact of active power output and control parameters on the damping characteristics of subsynchronous oscillation is analysed with the eigenvalue method. The analysis shows that when the phase-locked loop (PLL) proportional gain is high, the subsynchronous oscillation damping characteristics are worsened as the active power output increases. On the contrary, when the PLL proportional gain is small, the subsynchronous oscillation damping characteristics are improved as the active power output increases. By adjusting... [more]

Keywords: cascade control, charging, cooperative control, cyber-physical system, ultracapacitor
Ultracapacitors have recently received great attention for energy storage due to their small pollution, high power density, and long lifetime. In many applications, ultracapacitors need to be charged with a high current, where a multi-module charging system is typically adopted. Although the classical decentralized control method can control the charging process of ultracapacitors, there exists a problem that the charging current may be imbalanced among charging modules. In this paper, a cooperative cascade charging method is proposed for the multi-module charging system to reduce the current imbalance among charging modules. First, the state-space averaging method and graph theory are used to model the multiple-module charging system. Second, an effective cooperative cascade control is proposed, where the outer voltage loop stabilizes the output voltage to the desired voltage and the inner current loop guarantees the current of each charger to follow the target current. As significant components of tight gas reservoirs, clay minerals with ultrafine dimensions play a crucial role in controlling pore structures and permeability. XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), N2GA (nitrogen gas adsorption), and RMIP (rate-controlled mercury injection porosimetry) experiments were executed to uncover the effects of clay minerals on pore structures and the permeability of tight gas reservoirs, taking tight rock samples collected from the Lower Cretaceous Dengloukou and Shahezi Formations in the Xujiaweizi Rift of the northern Songliao Basin as an example. The results show that the pore space of tight gas reservoirs primarily comprises intragranular-dominant pore networks and intergranular-dominant pore networks according to fractal theory and mercury intrusion features. The former is interpreted as a conventional pore-throat structure where large pores are connected by wide throats, mainly consisting of intergranular pores and dissolution por... [more]

This article proposes a holistic codesign optimization framework (COF) to simultaneously optimize a power conversion stage and a controller stage using a dual-loop control scheme for multiphase SiC-based DC/DC converters. In this study, the power conversion stage adopts a non-isolated interleaved boost converter (IBC). Besides, the dual-loop control scheme uses type-III controllers for both inner- and outer- loops to regulate the output voltage of the IBC and tackle its non-minimum phase issue. Based on the converter architecture, a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem including four objective functions (OFs) is properly formulated for the COF. To this end, total input current ripple, total weight of inductors and total power losses are selected as three OFs for the power conversion stage whilst one OF called integral of time-weighted absolute error is considered for the controller stage. The OFs are expressed in analytical forms. To solve the MOO problem, the COF utilizes a non-... [more]

Keywords: Energy Storage, fuel cell, hybrid batter, optimal sizing, power management
Growing consciousness of the threat posed by man-made climate change has spurred government institutions, industry, and science to find clean fuels to power economic activity. Fuel cells powered by hydrogen are one of the steps in gaining clean energy. To improve the efficiency of the fuel cell, the hybrid solutions are required. This article shows a new approach to the design and control of a hybrid energy storage system for portable applications. The methodology allows us to optimize the desired physical parameters of the elements (weight or size) in order to withstand the connected load power demand. Such an approach allows us to minimize weight, which is essential in portable systems. The methodology was proven by building a technology demonstrator. The measurements of physical objects verified the electrical parameters received during simulation and allowed a lower weight of the system, compared to the system based only on Li-ion batteries.

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system negatively affects the electric vehicle (EV) driving range, especially under cold ambient conditions. Modern HVAC systems based on the vapour-compression cycle can be rearranged to operate in the heat pump mode to improve the overall system efficiency compared to conventional electrical/resistive heaters. Keywords: impedance model, small-signal modeling, system stability, virtual synchronous generator (VSG), weak grid
This paper develops the impedance models of grid-connected converters under the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) strategy with a cascaded inner control loop and analyzes the system stability of VSG controlled converters with different kinds of weak grid. Different from existing small-signal models with high dimensions, a single-in-single-out (SISO) impedance model with simple mathematical expression is obtained in this paper, which is applied to identify the influence of the cascaded control loop on impedance characteristics and system stability. It is found that the impedance characteristics of VSG controlled converters can become capacitive below the fundamental frequency, and it is mainly caused by the voltage controller in the cascaded control loop of the VSG strategy. Impedance-based stability analysis shows that the capacitive impedance characteristics can benefit the compatibility of converters operated with the series-compensated weak grid, but may deteriorate the system sta...
