April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degree of faultiness (DOF), degree of healthiness (DOH), dissolved gas analysis (DGA), evidential reasoning criterion, fault diagnosis, fuzzy characterization curves, fuzzy logic (FL), probability value assignments (PVAs)
The healthiness and or faultiness of oil-immersed electrical equipment using dissolved gas characterization has remained a critical and challenging task in power systems. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) continues to be the utmost preferred technique of detecting mainly slow evolving thermal and electrical faults. However, DGA can reveal more than just faults in equipment. This research looks at broad areas where DGA can be applied to determine the healthiness or faultiness of equipment in addition to fault identification. In equipment considered normal—i.e., fault-free—DGA can give the degree of healthiness (DOH) based on Rogers ratios C2H2/C2H4 < 0.1, 0.1 < CH4/H2 < 1, and C2H4/C2H6 < 1, plus the 3 < CO2/CO < 10 ratio for identifying fault-free devices. This answers the question: How healthy or normal is the equipment? Similarly, when these ratios are violated, it signifies the presence of faults, and two things ought to be determined. One is to identify the type of fau... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: double exponential function, energy-controlled switch, filtered surge arrester, indirect lightning, medium voltage transformer, spark gap
Preventing the medium voltage (MV) transformer fault by protecting transformers against indirect lightning strikes plays a crucial role in enhancing the continuous service to electricity consumers. Surge arresters, if selected properly, are efficient devices in providing adequate protection for MV transformers against transient overvoltage impulses while preventing unwanted service interruptions. However, compared to other protective devices such as the spark gap, their prices are relatively high. The higher the surge arrester rating and energy absorption capacity are, the higher the prices go. This paper proposes an inductor-based filter to limit the energy pushed into the surge arrester, and consequently to prevent any unwanted failure. An energy-controlled switch is proposed to simulate the fault of the surge arrester. Surge arresters with different ratings, e.g., 12 kV, 18 kV, 24 kV, 30 kV, 36 kV, and 42 kV with two different classes of energy, namely, type a and type b, are tested... [more]

Nikki Sjulander, Timo Kikas
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioethanol, detoxification, hydrolysates, lignocellulosic inhibitors, pretreatment, saccharomyces cerevisiae, yeast
Bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass is still struggling with many obstacles. One of them is lignocellulosic inhibitors. The aim of this review is to discuss the most known inhibitors. Additionally, the review addresses different detoxification methods to degrade or to remove inhibitors from lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Inhibitors are formed during the pretreatment of biomass. They derive from the structural polymers-cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The formation of inhibitors depends on the pretreatment conditions. Inhibitors can have a negative influence on both the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates. The inhibition mechanisms can be, for example, deactivation of enzymes or impairment of vital cell structures. The toxicity of each inhibitor depends on its chemical and physical properties. To decrease the negative effects of inhibitors, different detoxification methods have been researched. Those methods focus on the chemical modif... [more]

Keywords: Gaussian Process, maritime, mixed-integer linear programming, Model Predictive Control, Optimization, predictive model
We present a novel methodology for the control of power unit commitment in complex ship energy systems. The usage of this method is demonstrated with a case study, where measured data was used from a cruise ship operating in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The ship’s energy system is conceptualized to feature a fuel cell and a battery along standard diesel generating sets for the purpose of reducing local emissions near coasts. The developed method is formulated as a model predictive control (MPC) problem, where a novel 2-stage predictive model is used to predict power demand, and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is used to solve unit commitment according to the prediction. The performance of the methodology is compared to fully optimal control, which was simulated by optimizing unit commitment for entire measured power demand profiles of trips. As a result, it can be stated that the developed methodology achieves close to optimal unit commitment control for the con... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: correlation coefficient, faulty feeder detection, non-power frequency component, resonant grounding system, variational mode decomposition
Through analyzing the transient components and transient characteristics in transient zero-sequence current (TZSC), a novel fault feeder detection method based on the transient correlation of non-power frequency components (NPFCs) for the resonant grounded system is proposed. Firstly, using variational mode decomposition combined with fast Fourier transformation (VMD−FFT) to decompose the TZSC, by removing the power frequency components and noise signals, the transient NPFCs can be obtained. Secondly, to reflect the overall changing trend between faulty and healthy currents, the moving average filter is introduced to smooth the NPFCs; in this way, the fault transient features can be accurately revealed. Finally, the faulty feeder can be detected by comparing the threshold with the maximum difference value of comprehensive correlation coefficient of NPFCs. The detection results show that the proposed fault detection method can accurately select the faulty feeder; it is unaffected by fau... [more]

Keywords: adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), DFIG-based wind farm, fuzzy logic controller, stability, STATCOM, three-machine nine-bus system
The stability of the control grid is a critical prerequisite for a safe and efficient power system service. A thorough knowledge of the effects of the power system volatility is essential for the effective study and control of power systems. This paper presents the simulation outcome of a multimachine power network implemented by a wind farm (WF) utilizing a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for better stability control objectives. A similarly aggregated double-fed induction generator (DFIG) powered by a gearbox analogy with an equally aggregated wind turbine (WT) determines the operating output of the wind farm. A proportional−integral−derivative controller (PID)-based damping controller, PID including Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC), and an adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) controller of the proposed SATCOM are intended to add sufficient damping properties to the dominating modes of the examined system during diverse working circumstances. April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EMS, ESS, forecasting, HCPV, linear models, smoothing
The High Concentrator Photovoltaic (HCPV) technology, due to its high efficiency, is considered one of the most promising solutions for the exploitation of sun-irradiation-based Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Nevertheless, the HCPV production is strictly connected to the Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) making this photovoltaic technology more sensible to cloudiness than traditional ones. In order to mitigate the power intermittence and improve production programmability, the integration between Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and HCPV, resorting to forecasting algorithms, has been investigated. Specifically, a local weather forecasting algorithm has been used for estimating the daily time evolution of DNI, air Temperature (T), Wind Speed (WS), and Air Mass (AM). These data are subsequently processed by means of an accurate HCPV model for the estimation of one day-ahead daily power production profile. The processing of HCPV forecasted generation by means of a properly tuned filter-based... [more]

Keywords: AC-AC conversion, modular multilevel converters, Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter
The Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter is a relatively new power converter topology appropriate for high-power Alternating Current (AC) to AC purposes. Several publications in the literature have highlighted the converter capabilities such as modularity, control flexibility, the possibility to include redundancy, and power quality. Nevertheless, the topology and control of this converter are relatively complex to design and implement, considering that the converter has a large number of cells and floating capacitors. Therefore multilayer nested control systems are required to maintain the capacitor voltage of each cell regulated within an acceptable range. There are no other review papers where the modelling, control systems and applications of the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter are discussed. Hence, this paper aims to facilitate further research by presenting the technology related to the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter, focusing on a comprehensive revision of the modelling... [more]

Keywords: inverter, Model Predictive Control, on-grid PV inverter, photovoltaic systems, power system analysis computing, predictive control, predictive models
This paper presents a finite control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) based technique to reduce the switching loss and frequency of the on-grid PV inverter by incorporating a switching frequency term in the cost function of the model predictive control (MPC). In the proposed MPC, the control objectives (current and switching frequency) select an optimal switching state for the inverter by minimizing a predefined cost function. The two control objectives are combined with a weighting factor. A trade-off between the switching frequency (average) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current was utilized to determine the value of the weighting factor. The switching, conduction, and harmonic losses were determined at the selected value of the weighting factor for both the proposed and conventional FCS-MPC and compared. The system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and a small-scale hardware prototype was built to realize the system and verify the proposal. Considering only 0.25%... [more]

Keywords: direct torque control, neutral-point-clamped (NPC), switching table, three-level inverter, torque ripple, total harmonic distortion
The use of a direct torque control (DTC) drive is a well-known control strategy that is applied frequently to induction motors. Although torque and stator flux ripples are major disadvantages of this approach, using a higher-level inverter helps to overcome these issues. In this paper, we propose a novel switching table with a modified control strategy for a three-level inverter to achieve ripple minimization, as well as smooth switching and neutral point balance; the latter features are generally ignored in many works. The proposed model is compared with a conventional DTC and an improved three-level inverter-fed voltage vector synthesis model in the Matlab/Simulink® environment with low, normal, and high-speed operation under load torque disturbances. The performance indexes and the comparative results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model in reducing the torque and stator flux ripples by up to 70% and 78%, respectively, generating a lower total harmonic distortion (THD%) i... Keywords: AFDD, arc fault detection devices, surge arrester
Arcing is a harmful condition that can lead to electrical fires. The U.S. National Electrical Code requires the installation of electric arc breakers in all residential areas. However, such devices can fail, and therefore, may not work when needed. At present, there are no tests to confirm the correct operation of this type of device. This study aimed to propose an experimental test method to verify the proper functioning of magneto-thermal switches with an electric arc protection function for the occurrence of arc faults. The results show that the proposed method adequately detected the correct operations and tripping time by using different surge suppressors. The proposed system lays the foundations for a portable test system for the periodic checking of electrical systems in which arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are installed.

Keywords: cumulative fatigue damage, lifetime balancing control, modular multilevel converter, reliability improvement, thermal stresses
With many advantages, modular multilevel convert (MMC) has been extensively used in high and medium voltage power transmission projects. The thermal performance and reliability of components in MMC are key issues in system operation. However, in the current research on the reliability of MMC components, there are few methods to improve service lifetime expectancy of the components. This paper proposes a balance control algorithm, based on the cumulative fatigue damage of components, feedback to the control terminal for allocating the sub-module (SM) operating state and generating trigger pulses. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified and discussed in case studies. It is found that this algorithm is able to improve the aging degree of components in the meanwhile, the improvement in MMC reliability comes at the cost of slightly increasing capacitor voltage fluctuations and total harmonic distortion (THD). Due to the limitation of capacitor thermal performance, S... [more]
Genetic Algorithm Approach for Gains Selection of Induction Machine Extended Speed Observer
Daniel Wachowiak
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gains selection, Genetic Algorithm, induction machine, speed observer, stability
The subject of this paper is gains selection of an extended induction machine speed observer. A high number of gains makes manual gains selection difficult and due to nonlinear equations of the observer, well-known methods of gains selection for linear systems cannot be applied. A method based on genetic algorithms has been proposed instead. Such an approach requires multiple fitness function calls; therefore, using a quality index based on simulations makes gains selection a time-consuming process. To find a fitness function that evaluates, in a short time, quality indices based on poles placement have been proposed. As the observer is nonlinear, equations describing the observer dynamics have been linearized. The relationship between poles placement and real dynamic properties has been shown. A series of studies has been performed to investigate the influence of the operating point of the machine on the dynamics of the observer. It has been proven that rotor speed has a significant i... Keywords: average model, smart transformer, solid-state transformer
Nowadays, many power electronics converters (PECs) are connected to the distribution grid, increasing the energy quality requirements in point of common coupling (PCC). One of the promising solutions to improve the energy quality is a smart transformer (ST) characterised by additional benefits in relation to the classical transformer throughout the possibility to implement advanced functionalities in PCC. However, the ST contains a lot of power semiconductor switches, making a problem for simulation software and the computer hardware when the control algorithm and all the ST functionalities are investigated. Usually, the solver algorithms in simulation software are used to create many linear time-varying states spaces, which increases exponentially with the number of switches. Therefore, very important is a model averaging process of the selected advanced ST topology, which is the aim of the paper. The proposed ST average model is compared with full switching models of each ST power co... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator, analytical model, auto-tuner, electro-pneumatic final control element, fluid mechanics, heterogenic tuning, heuristics, PID controller, positioner, single action pneumatic actuator
The main concept is to design the novel autotuner in a way that it will introduce benefits that arise from the effect of the fusion of the quantitative and qualitative knowledge gained from identification experiments, long-time expertise, and theoretical findings. The novelty of this approach is in the manner in which the expert heuristic knowledge is used for the development of an easy-to-use and time-efficient tuning process. In the proposed approach, the positioner simply learns, mimics, and follows up the tuning process that is performed by an experienced human operator. The major strength of this approach is that all parameters of positioner PID controller can be estimated by only identifying one single parameter that is the effective time constant of the pneumatic actuator. The elaborated autotuning algorithm is experimentally examined with different commercially available pneumatic actuators and control valves. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed autotuning approa... [more]

Due to the new green energy policies, district heating companies are being increasingly encouraged to exploit power-to-heat assets, e.g., heat pumps and electric boilers, in their distribution networks besides the traditional central combined heat and power units. The increased utilization of these assets will generate a more complex interaction between power distribution grids and district heating networks including markets for provision of ancillary services. Enabling the participation of power-to-heat units in the ancillary service markets, e.g., frequency reserves, may increase the revenue streams for assets’ owners. However, some technical challenges must first be addressed, including optimization of portfolios of assets that accounts for ancillary service markets, new coordination and operational schemes for portfolio of assets, increase data exchange and interactions with transmission system operators, and new local control schemes for units. Keywords: boxplot, energy storage systems, Fourier transform, Model Predictive Control, Solar Photovoltaic, spectral analysis, thermostatically controlled loads
In this paper, we present a flexibility estimation mechanism for buildings’ thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to enable the distribution level consumption of the majority of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation by local building TCLs. The local consumption of PV generation provides several advantages to the grid operation as well as the consumers, such as reducing the stress on the distribution network, minimizing voltage fluctuations and two-way power flows in the distribution network, and reducing the required battery storage capacity for PV integration. This would result in increasing the solar PV generation penetration levels. The aims of this study are twofold. First, spectral (frequency) analyses of solar PV power generation together with the power consumption of multiple building TCLs (such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, water heaters, and refrigerators) are performed. These analyses define the bandwidth over which these TCLs can operate and a... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cement integrity, CO2 injection, energy release rate, interfacial debonding, radial cracking
Cement provides zonal isolation and mechanical support, and its integrity is critical to the safety and efficiency of the CO2 injection process for geologic carbon storage. This work focuses on interfacial debonding at wellbore interfaces and radial cracking in cement during CO2 injection. It adopts the definition of the energy release rate (ERR) to characterize the propagation of cracks. Based on the finite element method, the proposed model estimates the ERRs of both types of cracks with practical wellbore configurations and injection parameters. Further parametric studies reveal the effects of cement’s mechanical and thermal properties and the crack geometry on crack propagation. Simulation results show that the ERRs of interfacial and radial cracks would surpass 100 J/m2 with typical cement properties. The cement’s thermal expansion coefficient is the most influential factor on the ERR, followed by its Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and thermal conductivity. The initial sizes an... [more]

The paper evaluates the voltage buck performance of the SRC achieved by using different pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods including conventional PWM and shifted PWM. Moreover, the new PWM methods, i.e., the hybrid shifted PWM (HSPWM), improved shifted PWM (ISPWM), and hybrid PWM (HPWM), are proposed to overcome the disadvantages of the existing methods. They improve the power conversion efficiency in the buck mode by reducing the power losses in the semiconductor switches a... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, FACTS, MIGRATE, series compensation, SSCI, SSR, stability and control
The phase imbalance compensation concept is proposed in literature as an alternative way to mitigate classical subsynchronous resonance (SSR) problems in series-compensated transmission lines. However, a fundamental analysis to determine this concept’s ability to mitigate resonances between a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) and a series compensated transmission line, i.e., DFIG-SSR, is not reported in literature. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to investigate to which extent phase imbalance compensation is able to mitigate DFIG-SSR. For the phase imbalance compensation scheme, an analytical model that captures the relation between the level of series compensation, the degree of asymmetry between the compensated phases, and the resulting shift in resonance frequency is developed and validated using time domain simulations. Then, an optimisation framework is developed to search for an adequate level of compensation asymmetry, capable of mitigating the adverse interactions... [more]

Estimating and optimizing the dynamic performance of a heat pump system coupled to a building is a paramount yet complex task, especially under intermittent conditions. This paper presents the “hardware-in-the-loop” experimental campaign of an air-source heat pump serving a typical dwelling in Pisa (Italy). The experimental apparatus uses real pieces of equipment, together with a thermal load emulator controlled by a full energy dynamic simulation of the considered building. Real weather data are continuously collected and used to run the simulation. The experimental campaign was performed from November 2019 to February 2020, measuring the system performances under real climate and load dynamics. With a water set point equal to 40 °C, the average heat pump coefficient of performance was about 3, while the overall building-plant performance was around 2. The deviation between the two performance indexes can be ascribed to the continuous on-off signals given by the zone thermostat due to... [more]
