Design and Implementation of Solar OLED Lighting Driver Circuit with Frequency Modulation Control
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency modulation, maximum power point tracking, SEPIC converter, triangular current mode, zero voltage switching
This paper proposes a single-stage single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) converter circuit, which is applied to the organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) driver circuit. The circuit proposed in this paper replaces the output Schottky diode from the original SEPIC with a power switch. Deadtime is added to prevent the on-state overlapping of two switches with zero voltage switching (ZVS), and the circuit operates in triangular current mode. The digital control methods are maximum power point tracking and frequency modulation using a battery to supply the converter and illuminate the OLED at night. Finally, a prototype is implemented to show the feasibility under the DC input voltage range of 10−40 V. The DC output is 12 V/1 A/12 W, and the conversion efficiency is up to 96.3%.

Adaptive Control of Fuel Cell and Supercapacitor Based Hybrid Electric Vehicles
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive controller, fuel cell, hybrid electric vehicle, hybrid energy storage system, nonlinear control, parametric variation, supercapacitor
In this paper, an adaptive nonlinear control strategy for the energy management of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and supercapacitor-based hybrid electric vehicle is proposed. The purpose of this work was to satisfy: (i) tight DC bus voltage regulation, (ii) good fuel cell reference current tracking, (iii) better supercapacitor reference current tracking (iv) global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop control system, and (v) better vehicle performance by catering to slowly-varying parameters. We have selected the power stage schematic of a hybrid electric vehicle and utilized adaptive backstepping and adaptive Lyapunov redesign-based nonlinear control methods to formally derive adaptive parametric update laws for all slowly-varying parameters. The performance of the proposed system has been tested under varying load conditions using experimental data from the “Extra Urban Driving Cycle.” Mathematical analysis and Matlab/Simulink results show that proposed controllers are... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: geothermal system, hydrochemical indicators, hydrogeochemical modelling, hydrogeochemistry, Podhale Trough
The most promising Polish region in terms of its geothermal resource potential is the Podhale Trough in the Inner West Carpathians, where the thermal water occurs in the Eocene-Mesozoic strata. The origin and conditions of formation of the chemical composition of the thermal water are different in a regional scale due to the impact of infiltrating water on the chemical compounds present in nearby thermal intakes, chemical processes responsible for the concentration of major elements and residence time. The article presents the regional conceptual model in regard to the factors controlling the chemistry of thermal water from Podhale Trough and the conditions of its exchange. It was allowed by performing the hydrogeochemical characteristics of studied water and analyzing its changes according to flow direction from HCO3-Ca-Mg type to SO4-Cl-Na-Ca and SO4-Ca-Mg types. The hydrogeochemical modelling was also made allowing identification of the impact of reservoir rocks on the formation of... [more]

Effects of Cyber Attacks on AC and High-Voltage DC Interconnected Power Systems with Emulated Inertia
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC/HVDC interconnections, attack impact, Denial of Service, false data injection, load frequency control, virtual inertia
The high penetration of renewable energy resources and power electronic-based components has led to a low-inertia power grid which would bring challenges to system operations. The new model of load frequency control (LFC) must be able to handle the modern scenario where controlled areas are interconnected by parallel AC/HVDC links and storage devices are added to provide virtual inertia. Notably, vulnerabilities within the communication channels for wide-area data exchange in LFC loops may make them exposed to various cyber attacks, while it still remains largely unexplored how the new LFC in the AC/HVDC interconnected system with emulated inertia would be affected under malicious intrusions. Thus, in this article, we are motivated to explore possible effects of the major types of data availability and integrity attacks—Denial of Service (DoS) and false data injection (FDI) attacks—on such a new LFC system. By using a system-theoretic approach, we explore the optimal strategies that at... [more]

Active Vehicle Suspension with Anti-Roll System Based on Advanced Sliding Mode Controller
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active vehicle suspension, hydraulic actuator, optimal controller, sliding mode controller
In the paper authors consider the active suspension of the wheeled vehicle. The proposed controller consists of a sliding mode controller used to roll reduction and linear regulators with quadratic performance index (LQRs) for struts control was shown. The energy consumption optimization was taken into account at the stage of strut controllers synthesis. The studied system is half of the active vehicle suspension using hydraulic actuators to increase the ride comfort and keeping safety. Instead of installing additional actuators in the form of active anti-roll bars, it has been decided to expand the active suspension control algorithm by adding extra functionality that accounts for the roll. The suggested algorithm synthesis method is based on the object decomposition into two subsystems whose controllers can be synthesized separately. Individual suspension struts are controlled by actuators that use the controllers whose parameters have been calculated with the LQR method. The mathema... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Shearer Operation in a Longwall District
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control of shearer operation, methane hazard in longwall, mine ventilation, monitoring system
This paper presents a relatively simple method to analyze potential methane hazard and preventive methods based on a computer simulation of the airflow and methane emission on the longwall face and in the goaf. The presented approach considers the operation of a longwall shearer and conveyers and their possible impacts on both direct emissions of methane and migration from adjacent goafs. In this work, an attempt was made to control the advance speed of the virtual mining system based on sample mining data in the longwall 841A area and the abandoned longwall 841B at the Bielszowice Hard Coal Mine. The objective of this study was to verify the suitability of the adopted control algorithm. The results obtained from computer simulations of the mining operation with the developed control algorithm are presented in graphics of methane concentration, shearer advance speed and the speed control system parameters.

Study on the Hybrid Cooling of the Flame Tube in a Small Triple-Swirler Combustor
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: experimental investigation, impingement-film cooling, inclined multi-hole, triple-swirler combustor, wall temperature
An experimental and numerical investigation is conducted to study the influence of different cooling schemes on the wall temperature of the flame tube in a small triple-swirler combustor in this paper. Two different cooling structures are adopted: the impingement-film and inclined multi-hole cooling structure (Scheme B, C), and the inclined multi-hole control group (Scheme A). The impact of parameters including inlet temperature (373−423 K), inlet Mach number (Ma) (0.12−0.18), and fuel−air ratio (FAR) (0.02−0.03) are discussed. The results show that the wall temperature of the flame tube rises with the increase in inlet temperature; as the inlet Mach number increases, the wall temperature (Scheme B, C) of the primary zone goes up and is distributed more uniformly; as FAR rises, the wall temperature in Scheme C is nearly unchanged, while it is increased in Scheme A and B. For the range of parameters considered in this study, the lowest wall temperature and the best cooling effect are ob... [more]

Corrosion Behavior of Al in Ethanol−Gasoline Blends
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Al, corrosion behavior, ethanol–gasoline blends
The corrosion behavior of pure aluminum (Al) in 20 v/v% ethanol−gasoline blends has been studied using electrochemical techniques. Ethanol was obtained from different fruits including sugar cane, oranges, apples, or mangos, whereas other techniques included lineal polarization resistance, electrochemical noise, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for 90 days. Results have shown that corrosion rates for Al in all the blends were higher than that obtained in gasoline. In addition, the highest corrosion rate was obtained in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane. The corrosion process was under charge transfer control in all blends; however, for some exposure times, it was under the adsorption/desorption control of an intermediate compound. Al was susceptible to a localized, plotting type of corrosion in all blends, but they were bigger in size and in number in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Conversion, heat recovery, thermoelectric, water-cooling
Aiming to reduce thermal energy loss at the cold side of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) module during thermoelectric conversion, a thermoelectric energy conversion system for heat recovery with a water-cooling energy exchange circuit was devised. The water-cooling energy exchange circuit realized sufficient recovery and reuse of heat accumulated at the cold side of the TEG, reduced the danger of heat accumulation, improved the stability and output capacity of thermoelectric conversion, and provided a low-cost and high-yield energy conversion strategy in energy conversion and utilization. Through the control variable method to adjust the heat generation of the heat source in the thermoelectric conversion, critical parameters (e.g., inner resistance of the TEG, temperatures of thermoelectric modules, temperature differences, output current, voltage, power, and efficiency of thermoelectric conversion) were analyzed and discussed. After using the control variable method to change the rat... [more]

One Cycle Control of a PWM Rectifier a New Approach
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: common-mode current, common-mode voltage, one cycle control, power factor corrector
This paper analyzes a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based One Cycle Control (OCC) strategy for a Power Factor Corrector (PFC) rectifier with Common-mode Voltage (CMV) immunity. It is proposed a strategy that utilizes an emulated-resistance-controller in closed-loop configuration to set the dc-link voltage to achieve unity power factor (UPF). It is shown that if the PFC can achieve UPF condition and if the phase voltage is only affected by CMV, then phase current is free from CMV, as well as a lead-lag compensator (LLC) to average phase current.

Method for Building Information Modeling Supported Project Control of Nearly Zero-Energy Building Delivery
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building energy modeling, building information modeling, nearly zero-energy building, project control, project delivery
With the increasing number of nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) due to increase of global awareness on climate change, the new concepts of design and control must be developed because of great NZEB dependency on detailing and multidisciplinary approach. This paper proposes a three-level gateway control method for NZEB project delivery by using digital representation of the building in building information modeling (BIM) environment. These controls (C1, C2 and C3) are introduced before three main phases of any project delivery—design phase, construction phase and handover. The proposed project control procedure uses black-box building energy modeling within the BIM environment, so the paper explores the reliability of one tool for direct energy modeling within the BIM-authoring software. The paper shows two types of validation tests with satisfactory results. This leads to conclusion that analyzed tool for energy simulation within BIM environment can be used in a way that is described... [more]

Energy Harvesting by Waste Acid/Base Neutralization via Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controlled neutralization, ion-exchange membrane, pH gradient, waste to energy, wastewater valorization
Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (BMRED) can be used to produce electricity exploiting acid-base neutralization, thus representing a valuable route in reusing waste streams. The present work investigates the performance of a lab-scale BMRED module under several operating conditions. By feeding the stack with 1 M HCl and NaOH streams, a maximum power density of ~17 W m−2 was obtained at 100 A m−2 with a 10-triplet stack with a flow velocity of 1 cm s−1, while an energy density of ~10 kWh m−3 acid could be extracted by a complete neutralization. Parasitic currents along feed and drain manifolds significantly affected the performance of the stack when equipped with a higher number of triplets. The apparent permselectivity at 1 M acid and base decreased from 93% with the five-triplet stack to 54% with the 38-triplet stack, which exhibited lower values (~35% less) of power density. An important role may be played also by the presence of NaCl in the acidic and alkaline solutions. Wit... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: disturbance observer, feedback linearization control, L2-gain, position control, quadruple-tank liquid-level system, state error, tracking control
This paper proposes a fresh state error feedback linearization control method with disturbance observer (DOB) and L2 gain for a quadruple-tank liquid-level system. Firstly, in terms of the highly nonlinear and strong coupling characteristics of the quadruple-tank system, a state error feedback linearization technique is employed to design the controller to achieve liquid-level position control and tracking control. Secondly, DOB is purposed to estimate uncertain exogenous disturbances and applied to compensation control. Moreover, an L2-gain disturbance attenuation technology is designed to resolve one class of disturbance problem by uncertain parameter perturbation existing in the quadruple-tank liquid-level system. Finally, compared with the classical proportion integration differentiation (PID) and sliding mode control (SMC) methods, the extensive experimental results validate that the proposed strategy has good position control, tracking control, and disturbance rejection performan... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Biomass, construction, heating device, low emissions, pellets, woodchips
The paper concerns the analysis of harmful emissions during the combustion process in households. The subject of the analysis is a low emission heating device with an output of 50 kW for burning biomass of forest origin (low-quality hardwoods or softwoods). The proposed boiler is automatically fed from the connected container by means of a screw conveyor. In this way, the optimum amount of fuel is supplied for maximum heat output (adjustment of the ratio of primary air to fuel). The proposed biomass heating system is equipped with a primary and secondary air supply system and exhaust gas sensors. This ensures optimal regulation of the air mixture and efficient and clean combustion. Proper control of the combustion process, control of the air supply by means of a lambda sensor and power control of the system ensure a low-emission combustion process. The system precisely adjusts to the heat demand. This results in highly efficient heating technology with low operating costs. In the prese... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: induction motor, Luenberger observer, pole placement
This paper presents the results of recently conducted research on Luenberger observers with non-proportional feedbacks. The observers are applied for the reconstruction of magnetic fluxes of an induction motor. Structures of the observers known from the control theory are presented. These are a proportional observer, a proportional-integral observer, a modified integral observer, and an observer with additional integrators. The practical application of some of these observers requires modifications to their structures. In the paper, the simulation results for all mentioned types of observers are presented. The simulations are performed with a Scilab-Xcos model which is attached to this paper. The problem of gains selection of the observers is discussed. Gains are selected with the described optimization method based on a genetic algorithm. A Scilab file launching the genetic algorithm also is attached to this paper.

Global Sliding-Mode Suspension Control of Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor under Eccentric Faults to Increase Reliability of Motor
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bearingless, displacements, global sliding-mode control, robust, suspension
Bearingless motor development is a substitute for magnetic bearing motors owing to several benefits, such as nominal repairs, compactness, lower cost, and no need for high-power amplifiers. Compared to conventional motors, rotor levitation and its steady control is an additional duty in bearingless switched reluctance motors when starting. For high-speed applications, the use of simple proportional integral derivative and fuzzy control schemes are not in effect in suspension control of the rotor owing to inherent parameter variations and external suspension loads. In this paper, a new robust global sliding-mode controller is suggested to control rotor displacements and their positions to ensure fewer eccentric rotor displacements when a bearingless switched reluctance motor is subjected to different parameter variations and loads. Extra exponential fast-decaying nonlinear functions and rotor-tracking error functions have been used in the modeling of the global sliding-mode switching su... [more]

Energy-Saving Train Regulation for Metro Lines Using Distributed Model Predictive Control
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed, energy saving, metro line, Model Predictive Control, operational constraints, train regulation
Due to environmental concerns, the energy-saving train regulation is necessary for urban metro transportation, which can improve the service quality and energy efficiency of metro lines. In contrast to most of the existing research of train regulation based on centralized control, this paper studies the energy-saving train regulation problem by utilizing distributed model predictive control (DMPC), which is motivated by the breakthrough of vehicle-based train control (VBTC) technology and the pressing real-time control demand. Firstly, we establish a distributed control framework for train regulation process assuming each train is self-organized and capable to communicate with its preceding train. Then we propose a DMPC algorithm for solving the energy-saving train regulation problem, where each train determines its control input by minimizing a constrained local cost function mainly composed of schedule deviation, headway deviation, and energy consumption. Finally, simulations on trai... [more]

Longitudinal Actuated Abdomen Control for Energy Efficient Flight of Insects
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aircraft, biological inspiration, dragonfly, inertial, insect
The actuated abdomens of insects such as dragonflies have long been suggested to play a role in optimisation and control of flight. We have examined the effect of this type of actuation in the simplified case of a small fixed wing aircraft to determine whether energetic advantages exist in normal flight when compared to the cost of actuation using aerodynamic control surfaces. We explore the benefits the abdomen/tail might provide to balance level flight against trim changes. We also consider the transient advantage of using alternative longitudinal control effectors in a pull up flight maneuver. Results show that the articulated abdomen significantly reduces energy consumption and increase performance in isolated manoeuvres. The results also indicate a design feature that could be incorporated into small unmanned aircraft under particular circumstances. We aim to highlight behaviours that would increase flight efficiency to inform designers of micro aerial vehicles and to aid the anal... [more]

Phase Analysis of Series Arc Signals for Low-Voltage Electrical Devices
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical fires, low-voltage electrical devices, phase analysis, series arc
An arc fault is an electrical breakdown of the insulating medium in an electrical system. When arc faults occur, they cause electrical fires with local sparks and temperatures of over 5000 °C. A series arc is generated in series with a load due to an incomplete connection between cords or a loose connection between a cord and terminal. However, it is hard to detect series arc faults with arc protection devices because the fault current flowing by series arc in the circuit is not higher than the load current. Especially in Korea, preventing electrical fires by series arc is rarely applied because there is no national standard for arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) and arc fault detection devices (AFDD). Therefore, many studies for reliable arc detection and analysis are still necessary to prevent electrical fires. In this study, phase analyses of series arc signals for low-voltage electrical devices such as heaters, computers, refrigerators, and air conditioners were conducted. The a... [more]

Finite Control Set MPC with Fixed Switching Frequency Applied to a Grid Connected Single-Phase Cascade H-Bridge Inverter
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FCS-MPC, grid connected inverters, predictive control, spread spectrum, switching frequency
Finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been widely investigated in recent years due to its ability to handle optimization problems with multiple control objectives in a diverse variety of systems. Moreover, its direct implementation in digital-based systems has made it an attractive strategy in static power converter applications. However, its characteristics such as variable switching frequency and spread harmonic spectrum limit the use of standard MPC due to power losses, audible noise, steady-state performance, and resonances. To mitigate these problems and extend the FCS-MPC applications to new areas, this paper proposes a new hybrid predictive control scheme, capable of achieving a harmonic spectrum distribution similar to that obtained with a pulse-width modulation scheme. The proposed strategy is based on a system model to generate an optimization, and, at the same time, an input restriction in the cost function of the standard FCS-MPC. This new approach is va... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: component sizing, electrified vehicle, energy management, optimization-based control, rule-based control, thermal management, topology optimization
From a control perspective, the energy management system and the thermal management system of an electrified vehicle are often developed separately, which may not yield the optimal solution. Moreover, an optimal system design requires concurrent plant (topology and size) and controller optimization, which should apply to both energy and thermal domains. This paper originally provides a comprehensive analysis of design and control optimization layers to reveal the interconnections between them and how they influence the optimality of an electrified vehicle design considering both energy and thermal domains. It was found that energy and cost savings can be achieved by integrating these optimization layers, and the energy and thermal domains with four coordination schemes, namely, sequential, iterative, nested and simultaneous. There is a trade-off between optimality, causality, complexity and computational time. Additionally, future research directions in terms of reducing energy consump... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand-based control, efficiency, heat pump, modelling and simulation, operating strategy
Thermal management systems of passenger vehicles are fundamental to provide adequate cabin thermal comfort. However, for battery electric vehicles they can use a significant amount of battery energy and thus reduce the real driving range. Indeed, when heating or cooling the vehicle cabin the thermal management system can consume up to 84% of the battery capacity. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anti-slip, electric vehicle, in-wheel-motor, motion control, multi-agent-system, slip-ratio
This paper deals with longitudinal motion control of electric vehicles (EVs) driven by in-wheel-motors (IWMs). It shows that the IWM-EV is fundamentally a multi-agent system with physical interaction. Three ways to model the IWM-EV are proposed, and each is applicable to certain control objectives. Firstly, a nonlinear model with hierarchical structure is established, and it can be used for passivity-based motion control. Secondly, a linearized model with rank-1 interconnection matrix is presented for stability analysis. Thirdly, a time-varying state-space model is proposed for optimal control using linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The proposed modellings contribute the new understanding of IWM-EV dynamics from the view point of multi-agent-system theory. By choosing the suitable control theory for each model, the complexity level of system design is maintained constant, no matter what the number of IWMs installed to the vehicle body. Model Predictive Control for Virtual Synchronous Generator with Improved Vector Selection and Reconstructed Current
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current reconstruction, Model Predictive Control, virtual synchronous generator, voltage vector
Due to the large-scale renewable energy connected to the power grid by power electronic converters, the inertia and stability of the power grid is declining. In order to improve the inertia and support the grid recovery, the three-phase converter works as a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) to respond to the frequency and voltage changes of the power grid. This paper proposes a model predictive control for the virtual synchronous generator (MPC-VSG) strategy, which can automatically control the converter output power with the grid frequency and voltage changes. Further consideration of fault-tolerant ability and reliability, the method based on improved voltage vector selection, and reconstructed current is used for MPC-VSG to ensure continuous operation for three-phase converters that have current-sensor faults, and improve the reconstruction precision. The proposed method can respond to the frequency and voltage changes of the power grid and has fault-tolerant ability, which is eas... [more]
