Minimization of Cross-Regulation in PV and Battery Connected Multi-Input Multi-Output DC to DC Converter
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cross-regulation, digital model predictive controller (DMPC), MIMO systems, PID controller, positive Super-Lift Luo converter, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This paper proposes a digital model predictive controller (DMPC) for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) DC-DC converter interfaced with renewable energy resources in a hybrid system. Such MIMO systems generally suffer from cross-regulation, which seriously impacts the stability and speed of response of the system. To solve the contemporary issues in a MIMO system, a controller is required to attenuate the cross-regulation. Therefore, this paper proposes a controller, which increases speed of response and maintains stable output by regulating the load voltage independently. The inductor current and the capacitor voltage of the proposed converter are considered as the controlling parameters. With the aid of Forward Euler’s procedure, the future values are computed for the instantaneous values of controlling parameters. Cost function defines the control action by the predicted values that describe the system performance and establish optimal condition at which the output of the system is r... [more]

Demand Flexibility Management for Buildings-to-Grid Integration with Uncertain Generation
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Buildings-to-Grid integration, demand flexibility management, Distribution System Operators (DSO), future energy markets, power systems, stochastic model predictive control, Transmission System Operator (TSO), uncertain generation
We present a Buildings-to-Grid (BtG) integration framework with intermittent wind-power generation and demand flexibility management provided by buildings. First, we extend the existing BtG models by introducing uncertain wind-power generation and reformulating the interactions between the Transmission System Operator (TSO), Distribution System Operators (DSO), and buildings. We then develop a unified BtG control framework to deal with forecast errors in the wind power, by considering ancillary services from both reserves and demand-side flexibility. The resulting framework is formulated as a finite-horizon stochastic model predictive control (MPC) problem, which is generally hard to solve due to the unknown distribution of the wind-power generation. To overcome this limitation, we present a tractable robust reformulation, together with probabilistic feasibility guarantees. We demonstrate that the proposed demand flexibility management can substitute the traditional reserve scheduling... [more]

Induction Motor Fault Diagnosis Based on Zero-Sequence Current Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: broken rotor bars, eccentricity, fault diagnostic, induction motor diagnostic, magnetic core saturation, neutral current, zero-sequence current, ZSC
This paper presents some considerations regarding the application of the stator zero-sequence current component (ZSC) in the fault detection of cage induction machines, including the effects of magnetic core saturation. Faults such as rotor cage asymmetry and static, dynamic, and mixed eccentricity were considered. The research started by developing a harmonic motor model, which allowed us to obtain a voltage equation for the zero-sequence current component. The equation allowed us to extract formulas of typical frequencies for particular fault types. Next, in order to verify the effectiveness of ZSC in induction motor fault diagnosis, finite element calculations and laboratory tests were carried out for the previously mentioned faults for delta and wye connections with neutral wire stator winding configurations.

On the Potential of Reduced Order Models for Wind Farm Control: A Koopman Dynamic Mode Decomposition Approach
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: axial induction control, dynamic mode decomposition, Koopman operator theory, reduced order model, wind farm control
The high dimensions and governing non-linear dynamics in wind farm systems make the design of numerical optimal controllers computationally expensive. A possible pathway to circumvent this challenge lies in finding reduced order models which can accurately embed the existing non-linearities. The work presented here applies the ideas motivated by non-linear dynamical systems theory—the Koopman Operator—to an innovative algorithm in the context of wind farm systems—Input Output Dynamic Mode Decomposition (IODMD)—to improve on the ability to model the aerodynamic interaction between wind turbines in a wind farm and uncover insights into the existing dynamics. It is shown that a reduced order linear state space model can reproduce the downstream turbine generator power dynamics and reconstruct the upstream turbine wake. It is further shown that the fit can be improved by judiciously choosing the Koopman observables used in the IODMD algorithm without jeopardizing the models ability to rebu... [more]

Full-Order Sliding Mode Observer Based on Synchronous Frequency Tracking Filter for High-Speed Interior PMSM Sensorless Drives
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: full-order SMO, IPMSM, Luenberger-based observer, position sensorless, synchronous frequency tracking filter
In the research of the high-speed sensorless control strategy of an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), considering the harmonic influence of inverter nonlinearity on traditional sliding mode observer method, a full-order sliding mode observer (SMO) method based on synchronous frequency tracking filtering is proposed. This method avoids the phase delay defects caused by the use of filters in traditional second-order SMO. Then, the observed extended electromotive force (EMF) signal is filtered using a synchronous frequency tracking (SFT) function. It tracks the changing stator current and filters out harmonics that are not part of the tracking signal to achieve static tracking of the stator current. Then, the rotor speed can be estimated by a Luenberger-based observer. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

New Second-Order Sliding Mode Control Design for Load Frequency Control of a Power System
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: load frequency control, multi-area power system, second order sliding mode control
The implementation of the sliding mode control (SMC) for load frequency control of power networks becomes difficult due to the chattering phenomenon of high-frequency switching. This chattering problem in SMC is extremely dangerous for actuators used in power systems. In this paper, a continuous control strategy by combining a second-order mode and integral siding surface is proposed as a possible solution to this problem. The proposed second-order integral sliding mode control (SOISMC) law not only rejects chattering phenomenon in control input, but also guarantees the robustness of the multi-area power network, which has an effect on parametric uncertainties such as the load variations and the matched or mismatched parameter uncertainties. Moreover, the reporting of the simulation indicates that the proposed controller upholds the quality requirement by controlling with operating conditions in the larger range, rejects disturbance, reduces the transient response of frequency, elimina... Effects of Welding Time and Electrical Power on Thermal Characteristics of Welding Spatter for Fire Risk Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical power, electrode, shielded metal arc welding, welding spatter, welding time
To predict the fire risk of spatter generated during shielded metal arc welding, the thermal characteristics of welding spatter were analyzed according to different welding times and electrical powers supplied to the electrode. An experimental apparatus for controlling the contact angle between the electrode and base metal as well as the feed rate was prepared. Moreover, the correlations among the volume, maximum diameter, scattering velocity, maximum number, and maximum temperature of the welding spatter were derived using welding power from 984−2067 W and welding times of 30 s, 50 s, and 70 s. It was found that the volume, maximum diameter, and maximum number of welding spatters increased proportionally as the welding time and electrical power increased, but the scattering velocity decreased as the particle diameter increased regardless of the welding time and electrical power. When the measured maximum temperature of the welding spatter was compared with an empirical formula, the ac... [more]

Effect of Water Distribution on Spontaneous Imbibition of Tight Rocks: A Fractal Approach
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fractal theory, non-piston-like front, pore size, spontaneous imbibition, water distribution
The original water distribution characteristic plays an important role in the fracturing liquid retention in actual tight reservoirs. In this paper, an analytical model was proposed to characterize the water distribution and its effect on the spontaneous imbibition, based on the capillary tube model and fractal theory. Furthermore, the effect of the water film and the non-piston-like front related to the pore size are included in our model. The proposed model was successfully validated with the experimental results of core imbibition tests. Our work demonstrates that water distribution is influenced by displacement pressure and pore structure. For a small differential pressure, the porous media with richer large pores usually possesses a lower water saturation, and this difference will decrease with the increase of differential pressure. Moreover, compared with previous studies, the proposed imbibition model can not only distinguish the valid pores and invalid pores for imbibition but... [more]

Optimization of Transformer Winding Deformation Assessment Criterion Considering Insulation Aging and Moisture Content
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aging and moisture, criterion optimization, fault diagnosis, frequency response, winding deformation
Frequency response analysis is widely used to diagnose transformer winding deformation faults due to its high sensitivity, strong anti-interference capability, and equipment portability, but the results of frequency response analysis can be affected by insulation aging and moisture in the transformer, leading to errors in the diagnosis of winding deformation faults. Currently, there is no effective method to prevent such errors. This paper focuses on optimizing the criterion for diagnosing winding deformations when insulation aging and moisture are present. First, the winding frequency response curves of oil-paper insulation were determined by combining insulation aging and moisture tests of the oil-paper insulation with frequency response simulations of the transformer winding. Next, the winding deformation criterion predicting the likelihood and extent of errors diagnosing transformer winding deformations due to the insulation aging and moisture content is discussed. Finally, the cor... [more]

Distributed Control of Clustered Populations of Thermostatic Loads in Multi-Area Systems: A Mean Field Game Approach
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aggregate loads, demand response, Energy Storage, smart grid, thermostatically controlled loads
Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) can effectively support network operation through their intrinsic flexibility and play a pivotal role in delivering cost effective decarbonization. This paper proposes a scalable distributed solution for the operation of large populations of TCLs providing frequency response and performing energy arbitrage. Each TCL is described as a price-responsive rational agent that participates in an integrated energy/frequency response market and schedules its operation in order to minimize its energy costs and maximize the revenues from frequency response provision. A mean field game formulation is used to implement a compact description of the interactions between typical power system characteristics and TCLs flexibility properties. In order to accommodate the heterogeneity of the thermostatic loads into the mean field equations, the whole population of TCLs is clustered into smaller subsets of devices with similar properties, using k-means clustering te... April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: blast furnace charging, DEM, influencing factors, ore-free zone, ore-to-coke ratio
The ore-free zone in the center of the blast furnace throat is a major feature of the charging system, ensuring the permeability of the center. Factors that influence the formation of the ore-free zone need to be researched to increase the control precision. In this paper, on the basis of a 1:1 3D model of a blast furnace, the formation of an ore-free zone at the burden surface at the throat was simulated by using the discrete element method (DEM). The effects of burden line depth, batch weight, and distribution angle on the formation of ore-free zones were investigated. The results showed that with increasing burden line depth, the width of the ore-free zone increased, the thickness decreased, the ore-to-coke ratio decreased, and the central airflow developed. Only changing the ore batch weight affected the thickness and width of the ore-free zone and had a greater impact on the permeability of the ore-free zone. The greater the ore batch weight was, the worse the permeability, while... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controlling factors, Qiongdongnan basin, subsidence characteristics, variations, Yinggehai basin
The Qiongdongnan and Yinggehai Basins are important petroliferous basins. To study the Cenozoic subsidence characteristics of these two basins, their controlling factors, and their implications, we studied the basins’ subsidence characteristics via one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and holistic subsidence. Then, we compared the basins’ subsidence characteristics based on the evolution of several particular geological processes that occurred in the South China Sea (SCS) and adjacent areas. The results indicated that the change in the holistic subsidence of both basins occurred episodically. In addition, the subsidence in these two basins differed, including their subsidence rates, the migration of the depocenters, and the changes in the holistic subsidence. The dynamic differences between the two basins were the main factors controlling the differences in the subsidence in the two basins. In the Qiongdongnan Basin, the subsidence characteristics were primarily controlled by the mantle m... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: greenhouse gas emissions, investment cost, manual and drip irrigation, PV energy production, sizing optimization tool
Solar photovoltaic (PV) irrigation is increasingly used in agriculture, driven by its low operation cost and virtually zero emissions, providing electricity access in rural areas. However, the high investment cost requires an optimal design. The objective of this work was to develop a user-friendly tool to optimally size a PV generator that satisfies crop irrigation needs under local constrictions. The ODSIS (Optimal Design of Solar Irrigation System) tool, was organized in three calculation modules, preceded by two complements, which determine the daily crop irrigation needs and power demand of the pumping system. Then, the first module sizes the PV plant, considering a multiplication factor, and provides the PV production potential throughout each day of the season. The second and third modules evaluate the total investment cost and equivalent greenhouse gas emissions avoided by comparison with traditional energy sources. Smith Predictor Controller Design Using the Direct Synthesis Method for Unstable Second-Order and Time-Delay Systems
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct synthesis, Smith predictor, time-delayed systems, unstable systems
Industrial processes often involve a long time delay, which adversely affects the stability of closed-loop control systems. The traditional Smith Predictor (SP) is a model-based controller used in processes with large time delays. The variation of system parameters and load disturbance situations are disadvantages of the traditional SP, and researchers have, therefore, proposed modified SP structures. In this paper, a design method based on the direct synthesis approach on a modified SP structure is discussed. In the design, an I-PD controller structure is used on the set-point tracking side of the SP, and a cascading PD lead−lag controller is used on the disturbance rejection side. In contrast with other studies in the literature, the use of simpler controllers enables the mathematical expressions that arise in the direct synthesis method to be significantly reduced. The proposed method is examined under the disturbance input effects for normal and parameter-changing conditions on sys... [more]

Well-Controlled Dynamic Reserves Calculation of Abnormally High-Pressured Gas Reservoirs Developed with Edge and Bottom Aquifers
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: abnormally high-pressured, aquifer, dynamic reserves, MBE, water influx
A material balance equation (MBE) is usually employed to estimate well-controlled dynamic reserves, but a more accurate calculation of these reserves is crucial. For abnormally pressured reservoirs with aquifers, the abnormally pressure and aquifer are difficult to determine, which leads to inaccurate calculations of well-controlled dynamic reserves. In this work, the MBE was established. Then, the correction function and abnormally pressure effect were deduced to determine well-controlled dynamic reserves calculations for weak aquifers and strong aquifers, respectively. For a weak aquifer, a pressure correction was determined to exist at a pressure coefficient of 1.2, and then the correction function was established to calculate the dynamic reserves. For a strong aquifer, the MBE derived by Walsh was employed to calculate the dynamic reserves and water influx. The relationship between the abnormally pressure effect and the dimensionless formation pressure was proposed. Classical, abno... [more]

Unrestricted Horizon Predictive Controller Applied in a Biphasic Oil Separator under Periodic Slug Disturbances
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: biphasic oil separator, model-based predictive control, slug disturbance, unrestricted horizon predictive controller
Multi-phase flow, characterised by the presence of both liquid and gas phases, often occurs in riser pipes during oil extraction. These flows can be problematic because they can cause oscillations due to the formation of bubbles within the pipes, which can negatively impact the safety and efficiency of offshore production operations. One solution to this problem is to use a gravitational oil separator, which is designed to dampen these oscillations. The separator is equipped with a control system that uses liquid level and gas pressure sensors to stabilise the flow by adjusting the positions of its valves. This paper presents the use of a specific type of model-based predictive controller to control the level and pressure of a biphasic oil separator, particularly in the presence of slug disturbances. The designs of the separator model and controller are discussed in detail, with a focus on the advantages of using an unrestricted horizon predictive controller, such as its ability to mak... [more]

Variable Universe Fuzzy Controller for an Independent Metering System of Construction Machinery
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous control, independent metering control system, smooth switching, variable universe fuzzy controller
As a new type of hydraulic system, the independent valve control system (IMCS) has higher flexibility compared with the traditional four-side slide valve control system. The independent metering control system (IMCS) is divided into four quadrant modes, based on the speed and load of the actuator. The traditional control methods always use a discrete control strategy to realize the switching between different modes based on mode recognition. However, the spool signals frequently switch, and the actuator operating pressure and speed are not stable when the IMCS is switched between different modes. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a continuous control strategy for the IMCS. Based on the fuzzy control principle, the variable universe fuzzy controller (VUFC) was designed. The controller contains 49 fuzzy rules, and the output of the controller at any time is calculated by the weighted sum of several fuzzy rules. The VUFC divides the system into 49 rules, which are activated... [more]

The Short-Circuit Fault Current Impact Mechanism and Adaptive Control Strategy of an MMC-HVDC
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, HVDC, MMC, three-phase short-circuit fault
A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is voltage-sourced and can supply fault currents to an AC system. To clarify the fault current impact mechanism of an MMC, this paper examines the control and capacitor discharge processes of an MMC when an AC system has a three-phase short grounding fault. The theoretical analysis shows that the outer loop control of the MMCs changes the fault injection. In different control modes, the nonzero reference value of the outer MMC loop forces the converter to inject and absorb the current into the AC system when a fault occurs. The limiter of the control determines the final injecting current value of the MMC. To help the MMC adjust the AC system’s fault current, adaptive strategies are also proposed, which include an adaptive reference control, an adaptive limiter control, and an adaptive capacitor control. On the basis of the proposed strategies, the fault currents could be increased or decreased within the MMC’s capacity. The simulations verify the t... [more]
