A Study on the Energy Reduction Measures of Data Centers through Chilled Water Temperature Control and Water-Side Economizer

The degree of integration of IT devices and consumption of cooling energy are consistently increasing owing to developments in the data center industry. Hence, to ensure the smooth operation and fault prevention of IT devices, the energy consumption of cooling systems has increased, leading to active research on improvements in cooling system performance for reducing energy consumption. This study examines the reduction in cooling energy consumption using a simulation by applying chilled water control and a water-side economizer (WSE) system to enhance the cooling system efficiency. The simulation results showed that the energy consumption was reduced by 1.8% when the chilled water temperature was set to 11 °C in a conventional system and by up to 19.6% when WSE was also applied. Furthermore, when the changes in chilled water temperature were applied for efficient operation of WSE, the energy consumption was reduced by up to 30.1% compared to that in conventional energy systems.
Flexibility Control in Autonomous Demand Response by Optimal Power Tracking

In the regime of incentive-based autonomous demand response, time dependent prices are typically used to serve as signals from a system operator to consumers. However, this approach has been shown to be problematic from various perspectives. We clarify these shortcomings in a geometric way and thereby motivate the use of power signals instead of price signals. The main contribution of this paper consists of demonstrating in a standard setting that power tracking signals can control flexibilities more efficiently than real-time price signals. For comparison by simulation, German renewable energy production and German standard load profiles are used for daily production and demand profiles, respectively. In this paper, a novel approach to matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is presented. It is proposed that these drives are used to provide or draw out reactive power from the power distribution line, keeping the power factor close to unit and, simultaneously, performing their primary function of motor powering and speed control. This application of matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is required due to the need to compensate for capacitive reactive power generated by light emitting diode lighting devices. In this study, the reactive power compensation range of the matrix-converter-based variable frequency drive is determined, and a method is proposed to extend the compensation range.

This paper addresses the implementation and optimization of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) sensorless control using an ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. The execution time of EKF estimator was reduced from 260.4 μs to 37.7 μs without loss of accuracy. Modular Marx Generator Based on SiC-MOSFET Generating Adjustable Rectangular Pulses

The paper introduces a new design of Marx generator based on modular stages using Silicon Carbide MOSFETs (SiC-MOSFET) aimed to be used in biomedical applications. In this process, living cells are treated with intense nanosecond Pulsed Electrical Field (nsPEF). The electric field dose should be controlled by adjusting the pulse parameters such as amplitude, repetition rate and pulse-width. For this purpose, the structure of the proposed generator enables negative pulses with a quasi-rectangular shape, controllable amplitude, pulse-width and repetition-rate. A complete simulation study was conducted in ANSYS-Simplorer to verify the overall performance. A compact, modular prototype of Marx generator was designed with 1.7 kV rated SiC-MOSFETs and, finally, a set of experiments confirmed all expected features.

Heating extraction steam (HEXTR) flow rate is the key parameter to determine the heat load of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and the safe operation area of the steam turbine of CHP plant. Due to the difficulty of direct measurement, a soft measurement method of this flow rate is proposed. First, three calculation methods based on different principles are given: the Flügel formula of the steam turbine method, the butterfly valve flow characteristics method, and the improvement of heat balance characteristic of the turbine method. This paper attempts to disclose a new GaN-based device, called the P-Cascode GaN HEMT, which uses only a single gate driver to control both the D-mode GaN and PMOS transistors. The merit of this synchronous buck converter is that it can reduce the circuit complexity of the synchronous buck converter, which is widely used to provide non-isolated power for low-voltage and high-current supply to system chips; therefore, the power conversion efficiency of the converter can be improved. In addition, the high side switch using a single D-mode GaN HEMT, which has no body diode, can prevent the bi-directional flow and thus reduce the power loss and cost compared to a design based on a series of two opposite MOSFETs. As a control algorithm, the classical field oriented control was applied. Estimation and control of wheel slip is a critical consideration in preventing loss of traction, minimizing power consumptions, and reducing soil disturbance. An approach to wheel slip estimation and control, which is robust to sensor noises and modeling imperfection, has been investigated in this study. The proposed method uses a simplified form of wheels longitudinal dynamic and the measurement of wheel and vehicle speeds to estimate and control the optimum slip. This work deals with metaheuristic optimization algorithms to derive the best parameters for the Gaussian Adaptive PID controller. This controller represents a multimodal problem, where several distinct solutions can achieve similar best performances, and metaheuristics optimization algorithms can behave differently during the optimization process. Finding the correct proportionality between the parameters is an arduous task that often does not have an algebraic solution. The Gaussian functions of each control action have three parameters, resulting in a total of nine parameters to be defined. In the two-step method for nuclear reactor simulation, lattice physics calculations are performed to compute homogenized cross-sections for a variety of burnups and lattice configurations. A nodal code is then used to perform full-core analysis using the pre-calculated homogenized cross-sections. One source of uncertainty introduced in this method is that the lattice configuration or depletion conditions typically do not match a pre-calculated one from the lattice physics simulations. Therefore, some interpolation model must be used to estimate the homogenized cross-sections in the nodal code. This current study provides a methodology for sensitivity analysis to quantify the impact of state variables on the homogenized cross-sections. This paper presents an energy-saving approach for electric pumps widely used in agriculture. A capacitor-run single-phase induction motor is used with a centrifugal pump. An appropriate energy-saving frequency and voltage calculation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The fuzzy controller is used to control the water flow rate of the electric pump. Moreover, the adaptive Tabu search algorithm is used to identify induction motor parameters. The experimental results from the energy-saving approach are compared with the valve control and V/f control in terms of input power and power factor. From the experimental results, the electric pump using the proposed energy-saving approach consumes minimum input power compared with other approaches. In addition, the energy-saving approach can provide a good power factor at any flow rate.

Rotor Current Feedback Based Direct Power Control of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator Operating with Unbalanced Grid

The paper presents a decoupled direct power-controlled (DPC) of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) connected to an unbalanced power grid, executed in an orthogonal stationary reference frame related to the stator side. The control allows to maintain constant electromagnetic torque despite stator connection to the unbalanced power grid and to achieve controllable low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability. The control does not require any signal decomposition into positive and negative sequence order, which allows to reduce its complexity and computational requirements. Then, the paper presents positive influence of rotor current feedback in the stator-controlled reference frame on control performance. It facilitates significant transient reduction and minor steady state control improvement. All the mentioned functionalities were validated both in simulation and in laboratory conditions and the obtained results are described in the paper.

Future electrical power systems will be dominated by power electronic converters, which are deployed for the integration of renewable power plants, responsive demand, and different types of storage systems.
