Cooperative Control of Microgrids: A Review of Theoretical Frameworks, Applications and Recent Developments
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cooperative control, distributed energy resources, microgrid, multi-agent systems
The development of cooperative control strategies for microgrids has become an area of increasing research interest in recent years, often a result of advances in other areas of control theory such as multi-agent systems and enabled by rapid advances in wireless communications technology and power electronics. Though the basic concept of cooperative action in microgrids is intuitively well-understood, a comprehensive survey of this approach with respect to its limitations and wide range of potential applications has not yet been provided. The objective of this paper is to provide a broad overview of cooperative control theory as applied to microgrids, introduce other possible applications not previously described, and discuss recent advances and open problems in this area of microgrid research.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: business models, digital revolution, energy sector transformation, Hellwig’s method, Industry 4.0, literature review, strategic management
Digital transformation is a concept based on the use of digitalization and digitization. Digitalization leads to change of business models and provides a competitive advantage also in the energy sector. The process of change towards a digital business requires a specific strategy type, aimed to solve problems with uncertainty caused by Industry 4.0 implementation. This paper aims to propose a theoretical model combining different digitalization strategies and business models. Their theoretical foundations were discussed in the literature review part and related empirical research questions were attempted to be answered by the reference method analysis. The quantitative method of analysis was based on the secondary data from Eurostat for all EU member states and backed the theoretical part in terms of ICT variables. The novelty of this research is based on Hellwig’s reference method used in management sciences and the presented managerial implications. The discussed challenges of the en... [more]

A Review of the Conceptualization and Operational Management of Seaport Microgrids on the Shore and Seaside
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cold ironing, electrification, maritime, operation management, renewable energy source, seaport microgrids, shipboard microgrid
Seaports are well known as the medium that has evolved into the central link between sea and land for complex marine activities. The growth in maritime logistics particularly necessitates a large volume of energy supply in order to maintain the operation of sea trade, resulting in an imbalance between generation and demand sides. Future projections for three major concerns show an increase in load demand, cost of operation, and environmental issues. In order to overcome these problems, integrating microgrids as an innovative technology in the seaport power system appears to be a vital strategy. It is believed that microgrids enhance seaport operation by providing sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective energy. Although microgrids are well established and widely used in a variety of operations on land, their incorporation into the seaport is still limited. The involvement of a variety of heavy loads such as all-electric ships, cranes, cold ironing, and buildings infras... [more]

Application of State Estimation in Distribution Systems with Embedded Microgrids
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution system, load estimate, microgrid, network splitting problem, network topology, state estimation
In this paper, a weighted least square (WLS) state estimation algorithm with equality constraints is proposed for smart distribution networks embedded with microgrids. Since only a limited number of real-time measurements are available at the primary or secondary substations and distributed generation sites, load estimates at unmeasured buses remote from the substations are needed to execute state estimation. The load information can be obtained by forecasted and historical data or smart real-time meters. The proposed algorithms can be applied in either grid-connected or islanded operation mode and can efficiently identify breaker status errors at the main substations and feeders, where sufficient measurement redundancy exists. The impact of the accuracy of real and pseudo-measurements on the estimated bus voltages is tested with a 55-bus distribution network including distributed generation.

A Unified Controller for Multi-State Operation of the Bi-Directional Buck−Boost DC-DC Converter
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: bidirectional DC-DC converter, DC microgrids, energy storage systems, feedback linearization, multi-variable control
DC grid interfaces for supercapacitors (SCs) are expected to operate with a wide range of input voltages with fast dynamics. The class-C DC-DC converter is commonly used in this application because of its simplicity. However, it does not work if the output voltage (V2) becomes smaller than the input voltage (V1). The non-isolated bi-directional Buck−Boost DC-DC converter does not have this limitation. Its two half-bridges provide a means for controlling the power flow operating in the conventional dual-state mode, as well as multi-state, tri, and quad modes. These can be used for mitigating issues such as the Right Half Plane (RHP) zero that has a negative impact on the dynamic response of the system. Multi-state operation typically requires multi-variable control, which is not easy to realize with conventional PI-type controllers. This paper proposes a unified controller for multi-state operation. It employs a carrier-based modulation scheme with three modulation signals that allows t... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: broad learning system (BLS), equivalent model of grid-connected DC microgrid, Optimization, shark smell optimization (SSO)
The DC microgrid is an important structure of microgrids. Aiming at the problem of the grid-connected DC microgrid modeling, a grid-connected DC microgrid equivalent modeling method based on the optimized Broad Learning System (BLS) is proposed. Taking the electrical parameter data of the grid-connected DC microgrid access point as the training data set of BLS, the equivalent model of the grid-connected equivalent model is constructed. In order to further improve the accuracy and generalization performance of the model, the shark smell optimization (SSO) algorithm is used to optimize the input weights and thresholds of the BLS. Furthermore, the shark smell optimization-Broad Learning System (SSO-BLS) algorithm is proposed. SSO-BLS is compared with RBF, BLS, BFO-ELM, and other algorithms. The results show that the grid-connected DC microgrid model based on SSO-BLS has good accuracy and generalization characteristics.

Probabilistic Load Flow−Based Optimal Placement and Sizing of Distributed Generators
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed generation (DG), distribution network (DN), location optimization, probabilistic load flow (PLF)
Distributed generation (DG) is gaining importance as electrical energy demand increases. DG is used to decrease power losses, operating costs, and improve voltage stability. Most DG resources have less environmental impact. In a particular region, the sizing and location of DG resources significantly affect the planned DG integrated distribution network (DN). The voltage profiles of the DN will change or even become excessively increased. An enormous DG active power, inserted into an improper node of the distribution network, may bring a larger current greater than the conductor’s maximum value, resulting in an overcurrent distribution network. Therefore, DG sizing and DG location optimization is required for a systematic DG operation to fully exploit distributed energy and achieve mutual energy harmony across existing distribution networks, which creates an economically viable, secure, stable, and dependable power distribution system. DG needs to access the location and capacity for r... [more]

Characterization and Modeling of LV Cables Considering External Parameters for Distribution Networks
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution networks, earthing resistances, external parameters, four-conductor model, ground resistivity, low voltage cables, temperature, three-conductor model
In response to the climate emergency, new uses are plugged to low voltage (LV) electrical networks. The development of self-consumption complicates the LV grid operation, and force distribution system operators (DSOs) to better model and characterize their networks. DSOs mainly use a three-conductor model (3 CM) to compute power flows, and consider error margins of 2% for voltage profiles to reflect their model inaccuracy. The characteristics of the future LV grids call into question these margins, and the models used. In this paper, a four-conductor model (4 CM), and an additional model named 4 CMext, that considers external parameters (i.e., cable temperature, ground electrical resistivity, and value/number of the earthing resistances) are proposed. The best model for cable characterization and voltage profile calculation is chosen; the 4 CMext is more adapted for the characterization, and corresponds with the finite element model, with an error margin of 4%, experimental measurement... Development of a Platform for Securing Interoperability between Components in a Carbon-Free Island Microgrid Energy Management System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: carbon-free island, common information model (CIM), energy management system (EMS), interoperability, microgrid (MG)
The rigidity of information technology (IT) has been hindering the development of various businesses regarding energy management systems (EMSs) of power networks, although this area has become more diversified, resulting in changes of elements in the systems due to the introduction of renewable energy (RE) and the new energy industry. In order to effectively accommodate these changes, EMSs should be developed in a structure with a standard-based interface, which can secure interoperability between components in the EMS. In previous studies, the common information model (CIM) proposed by IEC TC57 has been utilized for developing EMSs of power networks, but there are gaps between the existing CIM and an information model for the EMSs of carbon-free island microgrids (MGs), which are a newly introduced form of power network covering multiple islands for reducing carbon emissions. This paper proposes a CIM-based software platform for a carbon-free island MG-EMS to efficiently operate the p... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: dynamic charge coordination, electrical vehicles, load balancing, peak loading, wave-form charging
A successful distribution network can continue to operate despite the uncertainties at the charging station, with appropriate equipment retrofits and upgrades. However, these new investments in the grid can become complex in terms of time and space. In this paper, we propose a dynamic charge coordination (DCC) method based on the battery state of charge (SOC) of electric vehicles (EVs) in line with this purpose. The collective uncoordinated charging profiles of EVs charged at maximum power were investigated based on statistical data for distances of EVs and a real dataset for charging characteristics in the existing grid infrastructure. The proposed strategy was investigated using the modified Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS) performed by DIgSILENT Powerfactory simulation software for a total 50 EVs in 30 different models. Then, the load balancing situations were analyzed with the integration of the photovoltaic (PV) generation and battery energy storage system (BESS) into the bus bars... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: confidence interval, elitist genetic algorithm, feature selection, price forecasting, SMO regression
The paper proposes a novel hybrid feature selection (FS) method for day-ahead electricity price forecasting. The work presents a novel hybrid FS algorithm for obtaining optimal feature set to gain optimal forecast accuracy. The performance of the proposed forecaster is compared with forecasters based on classification tree and regression tree. A hybrid FS method based on the elitist genetic algorithm (GA) and a tree-based method is applied for FS. Making use of selected features, aperformance test of the forecaster was carried out to establish the usefulness of the proposed approach. By way of analyzing and forecasts for day-ahead electricity prices in the Australian electricity markets, the proposed approach is evaluated and it has been established that, with the selected feature, the proposed forecaster consistently outperforms the forecaster with a larger feature set. The proposed method is simulated in MATLAB and WEKA software.

A Distributed Hierarchical Control Framework for Economic Dispatch and Frequency Regulation of Autonomous AC Microgrids
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: autonomous, distributed, economic load dispatch, hierarchical, microgrid, optimal dispatch, plug-and-play, primary, secondary, tertiary
Motivated by the single point of failure and other drawbacks of the conventional centralized hierarchical control strategy, in this paper, a fully distributed hierarchical control framework is formulated for autonomous AC microgrids. The proposed control strategy operates with a distinct three-layer structure, where: a conventional droop control is adopted at the primary layer; a distributed leaderless consensus-based control is adopted at the secondary layer for active power and, hence, frequency regulation of distributed generating units (DGUs); and the tertiary layer is also based on the distributed leaderless consensus-based control for the optimal power dispatch. Under the proposed strategy, the three constituent control layers work in a coordinated manner. Not only is the load dispatched economically with a negligible power mismatch, but also the frequencies of all the DGUs are regulated to the reference value. However, the frequency regulation is achieved without requiring any c... [more]

Optimal Individual Phase Voltage Regulation Strategies in Active Distribution Networks with High PV Penetration Using the Sparrow Search Algorithm
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution networks, on-load tap changer, smart inverter, step voltage regulator, switched capacitor bank, voltage regulation
This study aimed to propose individual phase voltage regulation strategies using the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) in the IEEE 8500-node large-scale unbalanced distribution network with high photovoltaic (PV) penetration. The proposed approach is capable of individual phase regulation, which coordinates the on-load tap changer (OLTC), voltage regulator (VR), switched capacitor bank (SCB), and volt−var setting controlled by a smart inverter to improve voltage variation and unbalance. Consequently, the change time of VRs, the switched times of SCBs, and the individual phase voltage magnitude and unbalance ratio are considered in the fitness function for the SSA. The simulation scenarios fully consider the unbalanced load conditions and PV power output patterns, and the numerical results demonstrate that the voltage variation and unbalance are clearly improved, by 15% and 26%, respectively. The fitness values, operation times of OLTC, VR, and SCB, and the settings of the volt−var control... [more]

Locational Marginal Price Forecasting Using SVR-Based Multi-Output Regression in Electricity Markets
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electricity markets, locational marginal price (LMP), Machine Learning, multi-output regression
Electricity markets provide valuable data for regulators, operators, and investors. The use of machine learning methods for electricity market data could provide new insights about the market, and this information could be used for decision-making. This paper proposes a tool based on multi-output regression method using support vector machines (SVR) for LMP forecasting. The input corresponds to the active power load of each bus, in this case obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, in order to forecast LMPs. The LMPs provide market signals for investors and regulators. The results showed the high performance of the proposed model, since the average prediction error for fitting and testing datasets of the proposed method on the dataset was less than 1%. This provides insights into the application of machine learning method for electricity markets given the context of uncertainty and volatility for either real-time and ahead markets.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: current harmonics, electric vehicle charging, electric vehicle charging station, electric vehicles, electromobility, harmonic distortion, power quality
The electric vehicles (EVs) could potentially have a significant impact on power quality parameters and distribution networks as they are non-linear loads and their charging might result in tremendous power demand. When connected to the utility grid, a large number of EV charging stations from different manufacturers might create significant harmonic current emissions, impact the voltage profile, and eventually affect the power quality. Nevertheless, practical examples of disturbances from charging stations have not been made public. This paper aims to clarify the characteristics of conductive disturbances and levels of current harmonics generated by charging station and their severity on the quality of electric energy. The analysis was based on tests of a prototype station of an EV charging station integrated with a LED street light. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: grid-tied DSTATCOM, harmonic elimination, improved power quality with non-linear loading, reactive power compensation with unbalance grid
A control structure design of a three-phase three-leg four-wire grid-tied Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (DSTATCOM) based on a combined-step-size real-coefficient improved proportionate affine projection sign algorithm (CSS-RIP-APSA) has been presented. The three-phase four-wire DSTATCOM is used for reactive power compensation along with harmonic current minimization. This strategy also helps in load balancing and neutral current compensation. The affine projection sign algorithm (APSA) is a member of the adaptive filter family, which has a slow convergence rate. The conventional adaptive filter deals with the trade-off between the convergence rate and the steady-state error. In the proposed algorithm, the RIP-APSA adaptive filter with two different step sizes has been designed to decrease the computational burden while achieving the advantages of a fast convergence rate and reduced steady-state error. Building-level electrical distribution systems comprise a myriad of current-carrying equipment, conversion devices, and protection devices that deliver power from the utility or local distributed energy resources to end-use building loads. Electric power has traditionally been generated, transmitted, and distributed in alternating current (AC). However, the last decade has seen a significant increase in the integration of native direct current (DC) equipment that has elevated the importance of DC distribution systems. Numerous studies have comparatively examined the performance of various electrical distribution systems in buildings but have failed to achieve uniform conclusions, primarily because of a lack of consistent and analogous performance evaluation methods. This paper aims to fill this gap by providing a standard set of metrics and measurement boundaries to consistently evaluate the performance of AC, DC, or hybrid AC/DC electrical distribution systems.
