Kaidong Yang, Andrea Cioncolini, Mostafa R. A. Nabawy, Alistair Revell
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: durability, energy harvesting, experiment, fatigue, inverted flag, piezoelectric, PVDF
This paper presents results from a practical assessment of the endurance of an inverted flag energy harvester, tested over multiple days in a wind tunnel to provide first insights into flapping fatigue and failure. The inverted flag is a composite bimorph, composed of PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) strips combined with a passive metallic core to provide sufficient stiffness. The flag, derived from an earlier, more extensive study, flaps with a typical amplitude of ~120 degrees and a frequency of ~2 Hz, generating a constant power of ~0.09 mW in a wind velocity of 6 m/s. The flag was observed to complete ~5×105 cycles before failure, corresponding to ~70 h of operation. The energy generated over this lifespan is estimated to be sufficient to power a standard low-power temperature sensor for several months at a sampling rate of one sample/minute, which would be adequate for applications such as wildfire detection, environmental monitoring, and agriculture management. This study indicat... [more]

Tatiano Busatto, Sarah K. Rönnberg, Math H. J. Bollen
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: harmonic analysis, nonlinear systems, power electronics, power quality, power system harmonics
Harmonic modeling of low-voltage networks with many devices requires simple but accurate models. This paper investigates the advantages and drawbacks of such models to predict the current harmonics created by single-phase full-bridge rectifiers. An overview is given of the methods, limiting the focus to harmonic analysis. The error of each method, compared to an accurate numerical simulation model, is quantified in frequency and time domain considering realistic input scenarios, including background voltage distortion and different system impedances. The results of the comparison are used to discuss the applicability of the models depending on the harmonic studies scale and the required level of detail. It is concluded that all models have their applicability, but also limitations. From the simplest and fastest model, which does not require a numerical solution, to the more accurate one that allows discontinuous conduction mode to be included, the trade-off involves accuracy and comput... Keywords: ANSYS, grid emulator, induction motor, power quality, voltage sag
Voltage sag is one of the most significant power quality problems in the industry and has a significant impact on induction motor safety and stability. This paper analyzes the characteristics of voltage dips in power systems and induction motors with a special emphasis on balanced dips with the help of virtual grids (regenerative grid simulator), as per IEC 61000-4-11. Three phase induction motors with 3.3 kW, 16 A coupled to a DC generator with 3.7 kW, and 7.8 A rated are considered for the test analysis. This paper aids in the development of an induction motor to achieve improved precision by taking different voltage sags into account. The experimental results benefit the design modifications of induction motors at industrial and other commercial levels of consumers regarding major power quality issues and the behavior of the induction motors. A proposed modification employing ANSYS is provided to further examine the precise performance of induction motors during sag events.

Keywords: DC-link capacitor, diodes and thyristors, multi-winding transformer, multistage converters, total harmonic distortion, variable voltage and frequency
Variable voltage and frequency are required to govern the torque-speed characteristics of many industrial drive systems. Traditionally, this is achieved with a power converting system implemented with multistage converters. This technology is based on rectifying AC power into DC and then DC into AC with an inverter circuit. The power quality concerns of both conversion stages are tackled by selecting high switching frequency PWM control and harmonics mitigation filters. Also, using a bulky DC-link capacitor is one of the big sources of low system reliability, so this approach increases the conversion losses, circuit, and control complications. The frequency step-down conversion is very attractive with direct AC-AC converters as it has a simple control and circuit structure, but these converters face poor power quality challenges once the output frequency is decreased with respect to an input. In these converters, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage becomes very po... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks, feature assessment, intelligent distribution networks, phidelta diagrams, prediction of electricity consumption, smart grid
The design of new monitoring systems for intelligent distribution networks often requires both real-time measurements and pseudomeasurements to be processed. The former are obtained from smart meters, phasor measurement units and smart electronic devices, whereas the latter are predicted using appropriate algorithms—with the typical objective of forecasting the behaviour of power loads and generators. However, depending on the technique used for data encoding, the attempt at making predictions over a period of several days may trigger problems related to the high number of features. To contrast this issue, feature importance analysis becomes a tool of primary importance. This article is aimed at illustrating a technique devised to investigate the importance of features on data deemed relevant for predicting the next hour demand of aggregated, medium-voltage electrical loads. The same technique allows us to inspect the hidden layers of multilayer perceptrons entrusted with making the pr... [more]

Keywords: catastrophic failure, filament lamp, heat sink type lamp, LED lamps, power quality, voltage disturbances
Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting has, compared to other types of lighting, a significantly lower energy consumption. However, the perceived service life is also important for customer satisfaction and here there is a discrepancy between customers’ experience and manufacturers’ statements. Many customers experience a significantly shorter service life than claimed by the manufacturers. An experiment was carried out in the Pehr Högström Laboratory at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, Sweden to investigate whether voltage disturbances could explain this discrepancy. Over 1000 LED lamps were exposed to high levels of voltage disturbances for more than 6000 h; the failure rate from this experiment was similar to the one from previous experiments in which lamps were exposed to normal voltage. The discrepancy thus remains, even though some possible explanations have emerged from the project’s results. The lamps were exposed to five different types of voltage disturbances: short... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: corporate social responsibility, CSR, energy sector, ESG
This paper aims to investigate whether the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) score of companies operating in the energy sector is associated with their corporate financial performance (CFP). The research covered data from eight companies with a dominant position in the Polish energy sector. The research used the comparative analysis between ESG performance and accounting-based measures of profitability: return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA) and return on sales (ROS). Additionally, reference was also made to the DuPont model. The acquired results do not reveal repetitive dependencies that would facilitate the discovery of a pattern of the impact of the factors of ESG on the financial performance of enterprises. Despite indicating the cases of correlations between the ESG scores and CFP at a high level, indeed sometimes at a very high level, the particular case studies significantly differ from each other. This may be caused by the fact that Polish enterprises... [more]

Keywords: biodetergent, biosurfactant, emulsion, heavy oil, scale up, thermoelectric power plants
In the industries across the petroleum chain and those involved in energy generation, the use of petroderivatives as fuel oils is common. To clean parts, equipment and environments contaminated by hydrocarbons, they use expensive, toxic products, bringing risks to the environment as well as to workers’ health. Thus, the aim of this study was to check the stability of a biodetergent prepared using atoxic substances for large-scale production and industrial energy sector application. The relationship between volume (4 to 10 L) and stirring time (5 to 10 min) of the formulation at 3200 rpm and 80 °C was evaluated. The hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB), long-term stability (365 days), toxicity and efficiency of low-sulfur, viscous fuel oil removal from metal pieces and floors were investigated. The interaction among operating conditions was shown to influence the features of the product, which achieved approximately 100% stability after a stirring time of 7 min. The emulsion HBL index v... Keywords: grid codes, islanding detection methods, non-detection zone, RoCoF, voltage phase jump detection
Detection of unintentional islanding is critical in microgrids in order to guarantee personal safety and avoid equipment damage. Most islanding detection techniques are based on monitoring and detecting abnormalities in magnitudes such as frequency, voltage, current and power. However, in normal operation, the utility grid has fluctuations in voltage and frequency, and grid codes establish that local generators must remain connected if deviations from the nominal values do not exceed the defined thresholds and ramps. This means that islanding detection methods could not detect islanding if there are fluctuations that do not exceed the grid code requirements, known as the non-detection zone (NDZ). A survey on the benefits of islanding detection techniques is provided, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each one. NDZs size of the most common passive islanding detection methods are calculated and obtained by simulation and compared with the limits obtained by ENTSO-E and islandin... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: feedforward control, hybrid energy storage system, microgrid, virtual inertia control
This paper proposes a novel virtual inertia control (VIC) method based on a feedforward decoupling strategy to address the low inertia issue of power-converter-interfaced microgrids. The feedforward control scheme is employed to eliminate the coupling between active and reactive power caused by line impedance. The active power-voltage droop can be applied to the battery converter in the hybrid energy storage system (HESS). A novel VIC method is developed for the supercapacitor (SC) converter of HESS to increase the inertia of the microgrid. Detailed small-signal modeling of the SC converter with the proposed VIC was conducted, and the transfer function model was obtained. Parameter analysis of the virtual inertia and virtual damping was carried out with the pole-zero map method, and the step response characteristic of output voltage amplitude with power variation was analyzed in detail, deriving the parameter design principle. The simulation study verifies the effectiveness and validit... [more]

Keywords: current harmonics, electric vehicles, hosting capacity, LED lighting, photovoltaics, power quality, voltage distortions
Power electronic circuits in modern power supplies have improved the conversion efficiency on the one hand but have also increased harmonic emissions. Harmonic currents from the operation of these units affect the voltage waveforms of the network and could compromise the reliability of the network. Load and source non-linearity can, therefore, limit the renewable source’s hosting capacity in the grid, as a large number of inverter units may increase the harmonic distortions. As a result, voltage and current distortions could reach unbearable levels in devices connected to the network. Harmonic estimation modelling often relies on measurement data, and differences may appear in mathematical simulations as the harmonic aggregation or cancellation may generate different results due to the inaccuracies and limitations of the measurement device. In this paper, the effect of harmonic currents cancellation on the aggregation of different load currents is evaluated to show its impact in the ne... [more]

Keywords: microgrid (MG), microgrid emulator, power hardware in the loop (PHIL), power inverter, smart grid (SG)
The growing penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) due to the transition to future smart grid requires a huge number of power converters that participate in the power flow. Each of these devices needs the use of a complex control and communication system, thus a platform for testing real-life scenarios is necessary. Several test techniques have been so far proposed that are subject to a trade-off between cost, test coverage, and test fidelity. This paper presents an approach for testing microgrids, by developing an emulator, with emphasis on the micro-inverter unit and the possibility of flexible configuration for different grid topologies. In contrast to other approaches, our testbed is characterized by small volume and significantly scaled-down voltages for safety purposes. The examination is concentrated specifically on the inverter behavior. The test scenarios include behaviors in case of load changes, transition between grid-tied and islanded mode, connection and removal of... [more]

Keywords: Distribution Network Analysis, EV demand model, EV Demand Simulation
Deployment of Electric Vehicles (EV) is increasing in recent years due to economic and environmental advantages compared with fossil fuel-based vehicles. As the market of EVs grows, new challenges to the electric grid are emerging to accommodate the EVs demand, especially in the distribution networks. In this paper, we investigate the impact of EVs deployment on the electricity demand and distributed network. We propose a model to generate EV demand profiles that consider the EV users’ driving pattern such as daily energy consumption and charging schedule, in addition to the EV’s charging characteristics. The EV demand model uses data we obtained from a survey to evaluate the model’s parameters. We use the EV demand model to simulate and evaluate the impact of EVs demand on the distribution network. We present a case study with an actual model for a distribution network to evaluate the impact of EVs on the distribution network in Saudi Arabia. We analyze the simulation results and show... [more]

Keywords: costs, decision process, risks, skill, wind energy, Wind Resource Assessment
In wind energy, the accuracy of the estimation of the wind resource has an enormous effect on the expected rate of return of a project. For a given project, the wind resource assessor is faced with a difficult choice of a wide range of simulation tools and workflows with varying accuracies (or “skill”) and costs. There is currently no guideline or process available in the industry for helping with the decision of the most “optimal” choice—and this is particularly challenging in mountainous (or “complex”) terrain. In this work, a new decision process for selecting the Wind Resource Assessment (WRA) workflow that would expect to deliver the best compromise between skill and costs for a given wind energy project is developed, with a focus on complex terrain. This involves estimating the expected skill and cost scores using a set of pre-defined weighted parameters. The new process is designed and tested by applying seven different WRA workflows to five different complex terrain sites. The... [more]

This study explores Bangladesh’s present energy condition, renewable energy (RE) possibilities and designs an optimal 100% RE-based off-grid power system for St. Martin’s Island, Bangladesh. The optimal size of a hybrid renewable microgrid based on photovoltaic (PV) cells, a battery energy storage system (BESS), fuel cells (FC), and an electrolysis plant (EP) is proposed. Advanced direct load control (ADLC) and rooftop PV meet the energy demand at the lowest cost, and profits are maximized by selling chemical products produced by seawater electrolysis. Four cases are explored with the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimization technique using MATLAB® software to demonstrate the efficacy of the suggested power system. The system cost in case 1 is lower than in the other cases, but there is no chance of profiting. Cases 2, 3, and 4 have greater installation costs, which may be repaid in 8.17, 7.72, and 8.01 years, respectively, by the profits. Though the revenue in case 3 is 6.... [more]

Keywords: ABC, cost optimization, microgrid, power-sharing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
In smart grids, a hybrid renewable energy system that combines multiple renewable energy sources (RESs) with storage and backup systems can provide the most cost-effective and stable energy supply. However, one of the most pressing issues addressed by recent research is how best to design the components of hybrid renewable energy systems to meet all load requirements at the lowest possible cost and with the best level of reliability. Due to the difficulty of optimizing hybrid renewable energy systems, it is critical to find an efficient optimization method that provides a reliable solution. Therefore, in this study, power transmission between microgrids is optimized to minimize the cost for the overall system and for each microgrid. For this purpose, artificial bee colony (ABC) is used as an optimization algorithm that aims to minimize the cost and power transmission from outside the microgrid. The ABC algorithm outperforms other population-based algorithms, with the added advantage of... [more]

Keywords: energy sector, green economy, mergers and acquisitions, strategic management
The aim of the research, the results of which are used in this publication, was to identify the motives for mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector after the introduction of green economy elements in Western Europe. The mentioned region is the group of countries where changes related to the move to green energy are most visible (in addition to some countries from other regions, such as Singapore, New Zealand, or countries of the Arabian Peninsula). The research assumed the hypothesis that over the years since the Paris Conference the themes of mergers and acquisitions have changed from motives close to the views related to energy generation in traditional systems (black energy in large, monopolistic systems) to motives close to green energy (the research hypothesis). This was confirmed in the research, as business risk diversification (defined as diversification of the power sources from black to green) was the most popular M&A motive. In addition to emphasizing the direction of... [more]

Keywords: bioeconomy indicators, bottom-up approach, European Union Green Deal, public participation, stakeholder involvement
The circular bioeconomy is aimed at achieving sustainable development through high efficiency utilization and resource recycling, and through combining environmental, economic and social objectives. Although the implementation of circular bioeconomy principles is based on a bottom-up approach, the participatory process has often been neglected. To overcome this problem, the present study investigated a case-study with a three-step participatory process. The process aimed to evaluate a forest-wood supply chain with consideration of the circular bioeconomy principles. A set of indicators was identified and assessed by a pool of experts. Then the members of a forest-wood supply chain were consulted to implement the identified actions. Finally, a focus group was organized with key stakeholders to discuss critical issues and strategies for enhancing the forest-wood supply chain locally. The results show that the proposed set of indicators is a useful tool to evaluate the performance of the... [more]

Here is presented the MicroGrid’s control design based on detailed models of the photovoltaic energy sources and the storage systems. Such DC grids may present an unstable behavior caused by the PV’s intermittent output power, by switching ripples from the power converters and their power electronics, and oscillatory currents produced by some types of loads. Therefore, the system is subject to both fast and slow variations, and its stabilization is based on different technologies of stora... [more]
