March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer simulation, household microgrids, management, off-grid, processes, scalability
The security of national energy systems as well as the transition to a low-carbon future are two hot topics of discussion in the international political arena. Research on the stability of centralized energy systems is currently focused on distributed generation. Developing a scalable microgrid model enabling its massive adoption is one of the safest and feasible ways to solve such problem. The paper aims to fill an existing gap regarding the operation model of microgrids that is a barrier for the large-scale integration of those in the conventional grid network. In the proposed approach the authors identified key processes to be considered when operating microgrids, in the conditions shown through an experimental (simulation) campaign. A three-phase research was performed: (1) systematic literature review to explore the management models of a stand-alone microgrid design and management; (2) a household experiment; and (3) a computer simulation of energy balance for a selected househol... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, decision-making, indicators, Kruskal–Wallis test, normal distribution
The changes that have been triggered in market economies by COVID-19 have increased the importance of assessing the financial standing of companies and sectors. It is essential for managers, lenders, and investors to properly evaluate the financial condition of companies. Therefore, it is crucial to select indicators that show the differences in the values of market sectors before, and during, the COVID-19 pandemic (checking the stability of ratios over time). We used parametric and nonparametric analyses of variance (ANOVA) to single out indicators. The sample consists of listed companies in six sectors from the Visegrad group: manufacturing, construction, retail, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, and energy. We applied yearly and quarterly analyses in the periods from Q1 2017−Q1 2021. The analyses take into account 82 indicators. The results of the parametric ANOVA indicate that only the ratio of the company size shows the differences between the sectors in most of the... [more]

Keywords: challenges of distribution network system (DNS), control techniques, distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM), Energy storages system (ESS), energy-related CO2 emissions, hydrogen fuel cell (HFC), power quality (PQ)
The electric power industry sector has become increasingly aware of how counterproductive voltage sag affects distribution network systems (DNS). The voltage sag backfires disastrously at the demand load side and affects equipment in DNS. To settle the voltage sag issue, this paper achieved its primary purpose to mitigate the voltage sag based on integrating a hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) with the DNS using a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) system. Besides, this paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of D-STATCOM in DNS. In this paper, using HFC is well-designed, modeled, and simulated to mitigate the voltage sag in DNS with a positive impact on the environment and an immediate response to the issue of the injection of voltage. Furthermore, this modeling and controller are particularly suitable in terms of cost-effectiveness as well as reliability based on the adaptive network fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), fuzzy logic system (FLC), and proportional−integ... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy sector, firm’s performance, sustainability reporting, sustainable performance
The main purpose of this study is to identify the drivers of sustainable performance in firms that operate in the energy sector. Under the assumption of bidirectional impacts, we empirically tested the trade-offs between sustainable and financial performance, in light of neoclassical theory, the natural-resources-based view, and instrumental stakeholder theory. We hypothesize that, in the energy sector, sustainable performance is positively associated with firms’ financial performance and that sustainability reporting is an important driver of sustainable performance. We add primarily by considering the relevance of sustainability-policy-oriented factors and revising the role of sustainability reporting within. We provide empirical evidence based on a large panel of firm-year observations within the 2013−2020 time span, for firms that operate in the energy sector and are located in Europe. We have found strong support for the positive link between sustainable performance (proxied with... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitive coupling, devices, energy harvesting, fringing electric field, IoT based applications, mobile wearable
Harvesting energy from the fringing electric field of power lines is a topic of recent interest. So far, most of the reported energy harvesting processes used a fixed ground connection that makes the harvesting process immobile. This paper presents a new idea to avoid the fixed ground connection and make the extraction process mobile, which can lead to charging of wearable and mobile devices, reducing the frequency of battery charging and enhancing the longevity of the batteries. A comprehensive circuit model for the energy extraction system is still absent, and this research proposes a circuit model that forms a basis for the circuit design and prediction of the energy extraction efficacy. The circuit model provides the analytical basis to estimate charging time, optimum operating voltage and optimum power for such circuits. Experimental results are also presented to justify the circuit model. Although the actual amount of power extracted was very small, further research is needed to... [more]

Keywords: grid-tied mode, hybrid control, Interleaved Boost Converter, metaheuristic, microgrid, power quality
Renewable energy sources are an environmentally attractive idea, but they require a proper control scheme to guarantee optimal operation. In this work, we tune different controllers for an Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) powered by a photovoltaic array using three metaheuristics: Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Gray Wolf Optimization. We also develop several controllers for a second simulated scenario where the IBC is plugged into an existing microgrid (MG) as this can provide relevant data for real-life applications. In both cases, we consider hybrid controllers based on a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). However, we hybridize it with an Integral action (I-LQR) in the first scenario to compare our data against previously published controllers. In the second one, we add a Proportional-Integral technique (PI-LQR) as we do not have previous data to compare against to provide a more robust controller than I-LQR. To validate our approach, we run extensive simulations... [more]

Achieving the goals of distribution systems operation often involves taking vital decisions with adequate consideration for several but often contradictory technical and economic criteria. Hence, this paper presents a modified analytical approach for optimal location and sizing of solar PV-based DG units into radial distribution network (RDN) considering strategic combination of important power system planning criteria. The considered criteria are total planning cost, active power loss and voltage stability, under credible distribution network operation constraints. The optimal DG placement approach is derived from the modification of the analytical approach for DG placement using line-loss sensitivity factor and the multiobjective constriction factor-based particle swarm optimization is adopted for optimal sizing. The effectiveness of the proposed procedure is tested on the IEEE 33-bus system modeled using Matlab considering three scenarios. The results are compared with existing repo... [more]

Keywords: metaheuristic algorithms, optimal placement, phasor measurement units (PMU), pseudo-measurement, state estimation
This paper introduces a framework for optimal placement (OP) of phasor measurement units (PMUs) using metaheuristic algorithms in a distribution network. The voltage magnitude and phase angle obtained from PMUs were selected as the input variables for supervised learning-based pseudo-measurement modeling that outputs the voltage magnitude and phase angle of the unmeasured buses. For three, four, and five PMU installations, the metaheuristic algorithms explored 2000 combinations, corresponding to 40.32%, 5.56%, and 0.99% of all placement combinations in the 33-bus system and 3.99%, 0.25%, and 0.02% in the 69-bus system, respectively. Two metaheuristic algorithms, a genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization, were applied; the results of the techniques were compared to random search and brute-force algorithms. Subsequently, the effects of pseudo-measurements based on optimal PMU placement were verified by state estimation. The state estimation results were compared among the pseud... [more]

Keywords: electricity price forecasting, gradient boosting, Machine Learning, SVM
In response to the inherent challenges of generating cost-effective electricity consumption schedules for dynamic systems, this paper espouses the use of GBM or Gradient Boosting Machine-based models for electricity price forecasting. These models are applied to data streams from the Irish electricity market and achieve favorable results, relative to the current state-of-the-art. Presently, electricity prices are published 10 h in advance of the trade day of interest. Using the forecasting methodology outlined in this paper, an estimation of these prices can be made available one day in advance of the official price publication, thus extending the time available to plan electricity utilization from the grid to be as cost effectively as possible. Extreme Gradient Boosting Machine (XGBM) models achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 9.93 for data from 30 September 2018 to 12 December 2019 which is an 11.4% improvement on the avant-garde. LGBM models achieve a MAE score 9.58 on more rece... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid, power quality, voltage profile, wind energy
Wind power penetration into the grid is increasing throughout the world due to centralized power generation constraints such as shortage of fossil fuel, need to reduce gas emissions, long transmission losses and need for more supply of electrical power. Connection of wind power into the grid results in power quality issues such as voltage profile changes and harmonics. This necessitates coming up with correction measures in order to meet power quality standards. This paper deals with the analysis of the effects of injecting wind power to the grid on voltage profile. Branch participation factors are used to analyze the sections of the grid where effects on voltage profile are highest due to wind power penetration. Reactive power-voltage sensitivity analysis is used to determine the buses that are more sensitive to the changes brought by the wind power injection. Two cases were considered for the injection of the wind power: IEEE 14 test bus system and IEEE 39 test bus system.

Keywords: back-to-back converter control, coupled microgrids, dynamic frequency regulation, over-generation control, overload management, power exchange link, power-sharing
The two common mechanisms of load-shedding and renewable curtailment can prevent provisional overloading and excessive generation and the subsequent unacceptable voltage and frequency deviation in standalone microgrids (MGs), which makes MGs less resilient and reliable. However, instead of enabling load-shedding or renewable curtailment, such overloading or over-generation problems can be alleviated more efficiently and cost-effectively by provisionally interconnecting the neighboring MGs to exchange power amongst themselves. In such a scheme, the interconnected MGs can supply their local demand, as well as a portion of the demand of the adjacent MGs. In order to implement this strategy, a three-phase ac link can be used as the power exchange network, while each MG is coupled to the link through a back-to-back power electronics converter, in order to maintain the autonomy of each MG if they are eachoperated under different standards. This paper proposes a suitable decentralized power m... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distortion, electrical circuit, power quality, reactive power, voltage rise
Renewable Distributed Generation (RDG), when connected to a Distribution Network (DN), suffers from power quality issues because of the distorted currents drawn from the loads connected to the network over generation of active power injection at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This research paper presents the voltage rise regulation strategy at the PCC to enhance power quality and continuous operation of RDG, such as Photovoltaic Arrays (PVAs) connected to a DN. If the PCC voltage is not regulated, the penetration levels of the renewable energy integration to a DN will be limited or may be ultimately disconnected in the case of a voltage rise issue. The network is maintained in both unity power factor and voltage regulation mode, depending on the condition of the voltage fluctuation occurrences at the PCC. The research investigation shows that variation in the consumer’s loads (reduction) causes an increase in the power generated from the PVA, resulting in an increase in the grid c... [more]

Keywords: distributed power generation, photovoltaic systems, power distribution, power quality, power system analysis computing, power system measurements, reverse power flow, voltage unbalance
In this study, we have proposed a novel current injection determination method that improves the voltage unbalance based on the unbalanced line impedance in a distribution network with a large-capacity PV system. An increase in the unbalance of the distribution line voltage was observed owing to a large-scale reverse power flow. To visualize this phenomenon, the P-V curves were derived for each phase to indicate the increase in the voltage unbalance with respect to the reverse power flow. Based on the derived P-V curves, the effect of a current unbalance on the voltage unbalance was investigated. It was clarified that there is a current unbalance that can improve the voltage unbalance even if the line impedance is unbalanced. In other words, the current unbalance that can theoretically make the voltage unbalance zero could be expressed in terms of the symmetrical components of unbalanced line impedance. As an application of the proposed method, the effect of the mitigation of voltage u... [more]

Nowadays, microgrids (MGs) play a crucial role in modern power systems due to possibility of integrating renewable energies into grid-connected or islanded power systems. The Load Frequency Control (LFC) is an issue of paramount importance to ensure MGs reliable and safe operation. Specifically, in AC MGs, primary frequency control of each energy source can be guaranteed in order to integrate other energy sources. This paper proposes a micro-hydro frequency control scheme, combining the control of a reduced dump load and the nozzle flow control of Pelton turbines operating in autonomous regime. Some works have reported the integration of dump load and flow control methods, but they did not reduce the dump load value and adjust the nozzle flow linearly to the power value demanded by users, causing the inefficient use of water. Simulation results were obtained in Matlab®/Simulink® using models obtained from previous research and proven by means of experimental studies. The simulation of... [more]
