March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: fault, microgrids, protection, shipboard
In recent years, shipboard microgrids (MGs) have become more flexible, efficient, and reliable. The next generations of future shipboards are required to be equipped with more focuses on energy storage systems to provide all-electric shipboards. Therefore, the shipboards must be very reliable to ensure the operation of all parts of the system. A reliable shipboard MG should be protected from system faults through protection selectivity to minimize the impact of faults and facilitate detection and location of faulty zones with the highest accuracy and speed. It is necessary to have an across-the-board overview of the protection systems in DC shipboards. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the issues and challenges faced in the protection of shipboard MGs. Furthermore, given the different types of components utilized in shipboard MGs, the fault behavior analysis of these components is provided to highlight the requirements for their protection. Impact of Changes in a Distribution Network Nature on the Capacitive Reactive Power Flow into the Transmission Network in Slovakia
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: capacitive reactive power, power factor, reactive power flow
The main emphasis in the operation of an electricity system is placed on its safe and reliable operation. The flow of reactive power in a network can affect voltage conditions in individual nodes of the transmission system. In recent years, there have been changes in the network that have resulted in increased capacitive reactive power flows from lower voltage levels to higher ones. These flows can cause the voltage to rise above the limit. This paper examines recent changes in the reactive power transmission in the network, especially at lower voltage levels. The possible impact of these changes on the flow of capacitive reactive power at higher voltage levels is analyzed. This paper also presents a description and the simulated impact of power lines at different voltage levels on reactive power flows. Real measurements of different types of consumers at the low-voltage (LV) level are analyzed. Finally, a simulation model was created to simulate the impact of a customer’s power contri... [more]

Low-Impact Current-Based Distributed Monitoring System for Medium Voltage Networks
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: algorithm, current measurement, distributed measurement system, phase estimation, phasor measurement unit, sensors
Distribution networks are currently subject to a huge revolution in terms of assets being installed. In particular, the massive spread of renewable energy sources has drastically changed the way of approaching the grid. For example, renewables affected (i) the production of the legacy power plants, (ii) the quality of the supplied energy, decreasing it, (iii) the fault detection and location, etc. To mitigate the significant drawbacks of the renewables’ presence, several intelligent electronic devices have been (and are being) developed and installed among the grid. The aim is to increase grid monitoring and knowledge of its status. However, considering the significant number of nodes of the distribution network, compared to the transmission one, the process of installing new equipment is not effortless and is also quite expensive. This work aims at emphasizing a new concept of distributed monitoring systems, based on the phasor measurement unit’s current measurements, and a controllin... [more]

Real-Time Energy Management for DC Microgrids Using Artificial Intelligence
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ANNC, battery, energy management, MAS, microgrid, solar, Wind
Microgrids are defined as an interconnection of several renewable energy sources in order to provide the load power demand at any time. Due to the intermittence of renewable energy sources, storage systems are necessary, and they are generally used as a backup system. Indeed, to manage the power flows along the entire microgrid, an energy management strategy (EMS) is necessary. This paper describes a microgrid energy management system, which is composed of solar panels and wind turbines as renewable sources, Li-ion batteries, electrical grids as backup sources, and AC/DC loads. The proposed EMS is based on the maximum extraction of energy from the renewable sources, by making them operate under Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) mode; both of those MPPT algorithms are implemented with a multi-agent system (MAS). In addition, management of the stored energy is performed through the optimal control of battery charging and discharging using artificial neural network controllers (ANNCs).... [more]

The Impact of Independent Supervisory Boards on Transformations in the Energy Sector: Results of an International Longitudinal Study
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: board independence, corporate governance, energy transition
The paper aims at establishing an associative link between supervisory board members’ independence and the dynamics of environmental policy transformations in the energy sector. To that end, we apply static panel models and binary logistic regression analysis to an international sample of 358 energy companies observed over the period between 1990 and 2020. Our empirical results point to a lack of any persistent link between board independence and energy transition after controlling for country-specific effects and firm-level financials. Although firms with a higher percentage of independent directors on boards are more likely to set emission targets and implement resource reduction policies, they are simultaneously more likely to be involved in environmental controversies and increase coal output. They are also significantly less likely to enforce an energy efficiency policy. No significant link is found between board independence and environmental expenditures, CO2 equivalent emission... Energy Management of Microgrids for Smart Cities: A Review
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy management, energy management system, Energy Storage, microgrids, photo voltaic, renewable energy sources, smart city
Electric power reliability is one of the most important factors in the social and economic evolution of a smart city, whereas the key factors to make a city smart are smart energy sources and intelligent electricity networks. The development of cost-effective microgrids with the added functionality of energy storage and backup generation plans has resulted from the combined impact of high energy demands from consumers and environmental concerns, which push for minimizing the energy imbalance, reducing energy losses and CO2 emissions, and improving the overall security and reliability of a power system. It is now possible to tackle the problem of growing consumer load by utilizing the recent developments in modern types of renewable energy resources (RES) and current technology. These energy alternatives do not emit greenhouse gases (GHG) like fossil fuels do, and so help to mitigate climate change. They also have in socioeconomic advantages due to long-term sustainability. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: agglomerative, cluster analysis, K-means, power quality, virtual power plant
In this article, a case study is presented on applying cluster analysis techniques to evaluate the level of power quality (PQ) parameters of a virtual power plant. The conducted research concerns the application of the K-means algorithm in comparison with the agglomerative algorithm for PQ data, which have different sizes of features. The object of the study deals with the standardized datasets containing classical PQ parameters from two sub-studies. Moreover, the optimal number of clusters for both algorithms is discussed using the elbow method and a dendrogram. The experimental results show that the dendrogram method requires a long processing time but gives a consistent result of the optimal number of clusters when there are additional parameters. In comparison, the elbow method is easy to compute but gives inconsistent results. According to the Calinski−Harabasz index and silhouette coefficient, the K-means algorithm performs better than the agglomerative algorithm in clustering th... [more]

Harmonic Transfers for Quantifying Propagation of Harmonics in Wind Power Plants
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: power quality, power-system harmonics, wind power generation
In this paper, primary and secondary emissions in wind power plants are studied by using transfer admittance and current transfer functions between turbines and the public grid. The use of such transfer functions allows harmonic propagation studies without knowledge of the emission from individual turbines or the background voltage distortion. The transfer functions are calculated for one synthetic and one existing wind power plant, and results are discussed. Primary emission, secondary emission from other turbines and secondary emission from the public grid are shown to be of the same order of magnitude. Furthermore, the paper addresses the impact of turbine converter modelling, public grid impedance and the change in the aggregation exponent with frequency on the propagation. All three are shown to have a significant impact and should be considered. The main challenge for future studies is in obtaining relevant models for turbine impedance versus frequency.

Steady-State Stand-Alone Power Flow Solvers for Integrated Transmission-Distribution Networks: A Comparison Study and Numerical Assessment
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution, integrated networks, load flow, Newton–Raphson, power systems, steady-state, transmission, unbalanced
This paper compares and assesses several numerical methods that solve the steady-state power flow problem on integrated transmission-distribution networks. The integrated network model consists of a balanced transmission and an unbalanced distribution network. It is important to analyze these integrated electrical power systems due to the changes related to the energy transition. We classified the existing integration methods as unified and splitting methods. These methods can be applied to homogeneous (complete three-phase) and hybrid (single-phase/three-phase) network models, which results in four approaches in total. These approaches were compared on their accuracy and numerical performance—CPU time and number of iterations—to demonstrate their applicability on large-scale electricity networks. Furthermore, their sensitivity towards the amount of distributed generation and the addition of multiple distribution feeders was investigated. The methods were assessed by running power flow... Intelligent Islanding Detection of Microgrids Using Long Short-Term Memory Networks
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: empirical wavelet transform, islanding detection, long short-term memory network, non-detection zone
This paper presents a new intelligent islanding detection scheme (IIDS) based on empirical wavelet transform (EWT) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network to identify islanding events in microgrids. The concept of EWT is extended to extract features from three-phase signals. First, the three-phase voltage signals sampled at the terminal of targeted distributed energy resource (DER) or point of common coupling (PCC) are decomposed into empirical modes/frequency subbands using EWT. Then, instantaneous amplitudes and instantaneous frequencies of the three-phases at different frequency subbands are combined, and various statistical features are calculated. Finally, the EWT-based features along with the three-phase voltage signals are input to the LSTM network to differentiate between non-islanding and islanding events. To assess the efficacy of the proposed IIDS, extensive simulations are performed on an IEC microgrid and an IEEE 34-node system. The simulation results verify the effectiv... [more]

Evaluating the Effect of Demand Response Programs (DRPs) on Robust Optimal Sizing of Islanded Microgrids
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand response, microgrid sizing, renewable energy sources, robust optimization, uncertainty
A microgrid is a small-scale energy system with its own generation and storage facilities and energy management system, which includes shiftable and traditional loads. The purpose of this research is to determine the size of the microgrid through (i) investigating the effect of a shiftable demand response program (DRP) on sizing of an islanded microgrid and (ii) studying the uncertainty of power output of renewable energy sources by applying the robust optimization (RO) method. Since the RO method solves the problem for lower power outputs of renewable energy sources (RES) than the predicted values, the results obtained are pessimistic and will increase the project cost. To deal with the increment of project cost, the application of a load shifting DRP is proposed to reduce the cost. In addition, DRPs are suitable means to reduce the effects of uncertain power sources. Therefore, it is shown that a shiftable DRP is effective in reducing the overall project cost and the dependency on en... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery energy storage system, distribution networks, Fuel Cells, Optimization, wind turbines
This article presents a two-stage optimization model aiming to determine optimal energy mix in distribution networks, i.e., battery energy storage, fuel cell, and wind turbines. It aims to alleviate the impact of high renewable penetration on the systems. To solve the proposed complex optimization model, a standard variant of the dragonfly algorithm (DA) has been improved and then applied to find the optimal mix of distributed energy resources. The suggested improvements are validated before their application. A heuristic approach has also been introduced to solve the second stage problem that determines the optimal power dispatch of battery energy storage as per the size suggested by the first stage. The proposed framework was implemented on a benchmark 33-bus and a practical Indian 108-bus distribution network over different test cases. The proposed model for energy mix and modified DA technique has significantly enhanced the operational performance of the network in terms of average... [more]

Reinforcement Learning for Energy-Storage Systems in Grid-Connected Microgrids: An Investigation of Online vs. Offline Implementation
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery management, microgrid, offline and online RL, optimisation, reinforcement learning (RL)
Grid-connected microgrids consisting of renewable energy sources, battery storage, and load require an appropriate energy management system that controls the battery operation. Traditionally, the operation of the battery is optimised using 24 h of forecasted data of load demand and renewable energy sources (RES) generation using offline optimisation techniques, where the battery actions (charge/discharge/idle) are determined before the start of the day. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has recently been suggested as an alternative to these traditional techniques due to its ability to learn optimal policy online using real data. Two approaches of RL have been suggested in the literature viz. offline and online. In offline RL, the agent learns the optimum policy using predicted generation and load data. Once convergence is achieved, battery commands are dispatched in real time. This method is similar to traditional methods because it relies on forecasted data. In online RL, on the other hand,... Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electrified railway, Fourier transform, harmonic resonance, overvoltage, power quality, traction power supply
Harmonic resonances are part of the power quality (PQ) problems of electrified railways and have serious consequences for the continuity of service and integrity of components in terms of overvoltage stress. The interaction between traction power stations (TPSs) and trains that causes line resonances is briefly reviewed, showing the dependence on infrastructure conditions. The objective is monitoring of resonance conditions at the onboard pantograph interface, which is new with respect to the approaches proposed in the literature and is equally applicable to TPS terminals. Voltage and current spectra, and derived impedance and power spectra, are analyzed, proposing a compact and efficient method based on short-time Fourier transform that is suitable for real-time implementation, possibly with the hardware available onboard for energy metering and harmonic interference monitoring. Feedback Linearization-Based Control Strategy for Interlinking Inverters of Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids with Seamless Operation Mode Transition
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: current controller, feedback linearization technique, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, seamless mode transition, voltage controller
This study proposes an advanced control scheme for the interlinking inverters of the hybrid AC/DC microgrids, which facilitates a seamless transition between grid-connected and stand-alone/islanding modes for the microgrid. Due to a nonlinear relationship between the terminal voltages of the voltage-source inverter (VSI) interfacing through inductor−capacitor (LC) filters with the grid voltages and currents, a feedback linearization technique (FLT) is employed to control the interlinking VSI under both grid-connected and islanding operations. The FLT-based current controllers are applied in the grid-connected mode, in which they adjust the power exchange between the DC and AC subgrids and mitigate the distortion of the grid currents produced by nonlinear loads. Under the stand-alone operation, the AC bus voltages are directly regulated by the FLT-voltage controllers of the interlinking VSI. In order to reduce the inrush currents and voltage overshot at the instant of mode switching, th... [more]

Keywords: energy management, hierarchical control, microgrid, MQTT, smart inverter, wireless communication
In a context with an increasing number of non-traditional power sources, smart inverters function as the main interfaces between distributed energy resources (DERs) and the power bus. This role is even more prominent in microgrids (MGs), where numerous DERs must be controlled and coordinated. For this aim, MGs need to implement suitable communication links since, even in distributed control, the system must compensate voltage and frequency deviations caused by local controllers. Likewise, a communication system is required to optimize its operation. This paper aims to apply the technological advances brought by the Internet of Things (IoT) to the issue of communication within an MG. State of the Art of Low and Medium Voltage Direct Current (DC) Microgrids
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ancillary services, applications, architectures, DC microgrid, standards
Direct current (DC) microgrids (MG) constitute a research field that has gained great attention over the past few years, challenging the well-established dominance of their alternating current (AC) counterparts in Low Voltage (LV) (up to 1.5 kV) as well as Medium Voltage (MV) applications (up to 50 kV). The main reasons behind this change are: (i) the ascending amalgamation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which predominantly supply DC power to the energy mix that meets electrical power demand and (ii) the ascending use of electronic loads and other DC-powered devices by the end-users. In this sense, DC distribution provides a more efficient interface between the majority of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and part of the total load of a MG. The early adopters of DC MGs include mostly buildings with high RES production, ships, data centers, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and traction systems. Time-Dependent Upper Limits to the Performance of Large Wind Farms Due to Mesoscale Atmospheric Response

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: actuator disc theory, momentum theory, numerical weather prediction, wind farm blockage, wind resource assessment
A prototype of a new physics-based wind resource assessment method is presented, which allows the prediction of upper limits to the performance of large wind farms (including the power loss due to wind farm blockage) in a site-specific and time-dependent manner. The new method combines the two-scale momentum theory with a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to assess the “extractability” of wind, i.e., how high the wind speed at a given site can be maintained as we increase the number of turbines installed. The new method is applied to an offshore wind farm site in the North Sea to demonstrate that: (1) Only a pair of NWP simulations (one without wind farm and the other with wind farm with an arbitrary level of flow resistance) are required to predict the extractability. (2) The extractability varies significantly from time to time, which may cause more than 30% of change in the upper limit of the performance of medium-to-high-density offshore wind farms. A Comprehensive Weight-Based Severity Evaluation Method of Voltage Sag in Distribution Networks
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, entropy method, index evaluation, severity evaluation, voltage sag
With the increasing use of sensitive loads in frequency converters and in relays in distribution networks, voltage sag has become a major power quality issue that urgently needs to be solved. For the purpose of improving the understanding of voltage sag severity in distribution networks, a comprehensive weight-based severity evaluation method of voltage sag is presented in this paper. First, a multi-side index system that takes into account the combined influence of the source, network, and the load is established. A comprehensive weight method, which combines the improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) and the entropy method, is then adopted to determine the index weight. The weight of each index and the degree of superiority are linearly weighted to obtain the severity of voltage sag at different observation points. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using a distribution network model established in DIgSILENT PowerFactory (15.1.7, Gomaringen, Germany).

Systemic Risk Spillovers in the European Energy Sector

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Bayesian entropy, economic sectors, energy sector, spillovers, systemic risk
In this article, we aim to study systemic risk spillovers for European energy companies and to determine the spillover network of the energy sector with other economic sectors. To examine the spillovers within the energy sector, we employ three systemic risk measures. We then embed the results of these models into a Diebold−Yilmaz framework. Moreover, we consider an entropy procedure to extract a Bayesian formulation of its systemic risk spillover. This allows us to determine which company in our sample contributes the most to systemic risk, which company is the most vulnerable to systemic risk, and the place of the energy sector within risk networks. Our results reveal the fact that all companies manifest enhanced spillovers during 2008, early 2009, and 2020. Model-Free Power Control for Low-Voltage AC Dispatchable Microgrids with Multiple Points of Connection

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: dispatchable microgrids, hierarchical control, multi-PCC microgrids, power sharing
This paper proposes a modified version of the power-based control (MPBC) applied to microgrids (µGs) with multiple points of connection (i.e., utility grid itself or any other neighboring µG). Using the MPBC, single-phase distributed energy resources (DERs) arbitrarily connected between the phases share the amounts of balanced power, while the unbalanced and homopolar power are steered only to the line-to-neutral inverters. The control technique is based on a three-level hierarchical control using narrow bandwidth, low data rate communication that properly coordinates the DERs connected to three-phase four-wire µGs. The MPBC allows the DERs to steer power flow at any of the multiple points of common coupling of a multi-PCC dispatchable µG. The modified control proposed herein is evaluated through simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK considering a real urban distribution grid with typical operational elements and conditions.
