A Probabilistic Conductor Size Selection Framework for Active Distribution Networks
Lewis Waswa, Munyaradzi Justice Chihota, Bernard Bekker
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: after diversity maximum demand, distributed energy resources, distributed generation, hosting capacity, Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic methods
With the increasing adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind and solar photovoltaics (PV), many distribution networks have changed from passive to active. In turn, this has led to increased technical and operational challenges such as voltage issues and thermal loading in high DER penetration scenarios. These challenges have been further increased by the uncertainties arising from DER allocation. The implication of DER allocation uncertainty in the planning process is far-reaching as it affects critical planning processes, including conductor size selection (CSS). Most reported CSS methods in the literature do not include DER allocation uncertainty modeling as they are mostly deterministic and are set out as optimization problems. The methods, therefore, lack foresight on future loading conditions and cannot be used in a CSS process for feeders with high DER penetration. This paper proposes a novel input−process−output stochastic−probabilistic CSS framework for dist... [more]
Short-Circuit Analysis of DER-Based Microgrids in Connected and Islanded Modes of Operation

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed energy resources, fault current, microgrid, short circuit
Since microgrids should be able to smoothly operate in two distinct modes—grid-connected and islanded, their fault currents can widely fluctuate depending on the operational mode. When the microgrid is connected to the grid, the highest fault current, by far, is supplied by the utility grid. In this mode, the fault current contribution from distributed energy resources (DERs) is less than 20%. However, when the microgrid switches to the islanded mode, the fault current contribution from the utility grid is lost and DERs are the sole fault current sources. Thus, the overall fault current in the islanded mode is multiple times lower when compared to the grid connected mode. Moreover, most of the DERs are inverter-based, with limited fault currents, which further reduces the overall fault current in the islanded mode. With the rapid rise of the microgrid penetration around the globe, this phenomenon can adversely influence the relay protection, and thus the microgrid fault current needs t... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, distribution network, fault section, GRU, real time, smart feeder meter
Faults in distribution networks can result in severe transients, equipment failure, and power outages. The quick and accurate detection of the faulty section enables the operator to avoid prolonged power outages and economic losses by quickly retrieving the network. However, the occurrence of diverse fault types with various resistances and locations and the highly non-linear nature of distribution networks make fault section detection challenging for numerous conventional techniques. This study presents a cutting-edge deep learning-based algorithm to distinguish fault sections in distribution networks to address these issues. The proposed gated recurrent unit model utilizes only two samples of the angle between the voltage and current on either side of the feeders, which record by smart feeder meters, to detect faulty sections in real time. When a network fault occurs, the protection relays trigger the trip command for the breakers. Immediately, the angle data are obtained from all sm... [more]

Keywords: animal, TEG, thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectricity, tracker, ultra low power, wildlife
In this paper, we describe a novel animal-tracking-system, solely powered by thermal energy harvesting. The tracker achieves an outstanding 100 μW of electrical power harvested over an area of only 2 times 20.5cm2, using the temperature difference between the animal’s fur and the environment, with a total weight of 286 g. The steps to enhance the power income are presented and validated in a field-test, using a system that fulfills common tracking-tasks, including GPS with a fix every 1.1 h to 1.5 h, activity and temperature measurements, all data wirelessly transmitted via LoRaWAN at a period of 14 min. Furthermore, we describe our ultra low power design that achieves an overall sleep power consumption of only 8μW and is able to work down to temperature differences of 0.9K applied to the TEGs.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Faust method, hydrocarbon deposits, multiple regression, Polish Outer Carpathians, seismic velocity model, sonic logging
An appropriate velocity model from well logs is a key issue in the processing and interpretation of seismic data. In a deep borehole located in the central part of the Polish Outer Carpathians, the sonic measurements were inadequate for seismic purposes due to the poor quality of data and gaps in the logging. Multiple regression (MR) and a modified Faust equation were proposed to model the velocity log. MR estimated the P-wave slowness as a dependent variable on the basis of sets of various logs as independent variables. The solutions were verified by the interval velocity from Check Shots (CS) and by the convergence of synthetic seismograms and the real seismic traces. MR proved to be an effective method when a set of other logs was available. The modified Faust method allowed computation of P-wave velocity based on the shallow resistivity logs, depth, and compaction factor. Faust coefficients were determined according to the lithology and stratigraphy divisions and were calibrated wi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency-constrained unit commitment, inertia, islanded microgrids, operating costs, reserve allocation
Power reserves are usually scheduled in day-ahead unit commitment (UC) to minimize operating costs while maintaining system security. In applying basic UC (bUC) after a contingency, the system frequency may fall upon the activation of the load-shedding global control (under-frequency load-shedding or UFLS) limits. Small isolated microgrids are more sensitive to this issue due to their lack of inertia. Including dynamic considerations into the bUC problem can minimize UFLS activation and also avoid the need for the operator to later check the short-term feasibility of a bUC solution. These proposals are known as Frequency-Constrained UC (FCUC), although the implementation are very time-consuming. FCUC implementation will increase the system’s operational costs, which should be calculated to estimate remuneration to the safety service based on the additional reserve provision. The electrical system of Gran Canaria island has suffered several episodes of greater blackouts in recent years.... [more]

At present, the entire world is moving towards digitalization, including in the electric power industry. Digitalization is in its heyday and a lot of articles and reports are devoted to this topic. At the same time, the least digitalized of the electrical networks are distribution networks that account for a very large share in electric power systems. The article proposes a methodology for creating a flexible distribution network based on the use of digital technology. Additionally, we elaborate a methodology with the identification and collection of the necessary information to create digital networks, develop ways to adapt the required equipment, and suggest methods of recognition of some short circuits. Furthermore, we address the issue of reliability of the information obtained from digital devices, develop a technique for arranging the devices to cover the entire network as required to improve the power system protection of electrical power distribution networks. The above measure... [more]

Keywords: harmonics, power quality, smart grids, smart meter, tariff
Regarding the modern power smart grid, distribution consumers and prosumers are highly concerned about power quality (PQ). In fact, they would prefer to pay higher prices for a reliable and good quality power supply. Unfortunately, utility operators still aim for reliability alone, ignoring the quality of supply voltage and current. There are no clear guidelines for monitoring, penalizing, or implementing PQ-based tariff schemes in LV distribution systems. In addition, the implementation of a PQ-based tariff requires a real-time measuring mechanism at the user end, which is very expensive and difficult to understand for a domestic consumer. This paper presents a novel, low-cost, efficient, and user-friendly smart PQ meter to overcome these issues and limitations. It is essentially a PQ analyzer with energy metering functionality, which implements a novel PQ-based tariff scheme that penalizes consumers violating the PQ limits and provides incentives for a good PQ profile. It measures as... [more]

Keywords: grid forming, inverter-based generation, LVRT, power quality, unbalanced faults
With an increasing capacity of inverter-based generation and with a 100% renewable energy power system on the horizon, grid forming converters have the potential to become the prevalent control mode in the grid. Thus, the correct performance of these devices is going to be crucial for system stability and security of supply. Most research related to the grid-forming control is focused on normal operating conditions, although significant effort has been devoted to current limitation strategies to ensure Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capability. However, most contributions usually consider only balanced faults. This paper, proposes a new current limiting method based on the well-known threshold virtual impedance (TVI) that keeps the voltage source behaviour associated to the grid forming (GFM) capability, even when the current limit is reached, while reducing the voltage unbalance according to user-defined settings.

Keywords: distribution static synchronous compensator, power flow algorithm, renewable energy sources, unbalanced distribution networks, voltage unbalance
The impacts of the fast growth of renewable energy sources (RESs) and distribution static synchronous compensators (D-STATCOMs) on unbalanced radial distribution networks (URDNs) are analyzed with three-phase power flow algorithms (PFAs). As the URDNs are unbalanced, they can experience voltage unbalance (VU). This paper proposes a novel three-phase PFA for URDNs with multiple RES and D-STATCOM device integrations. The bus number matrix (BNM) and branch number matrix (BRNM) developed in this paper make the implementation of the proposed PFA simple. These matrices are developed to store the bus numbers and branch numbers of newly created sections of the URDN. Both PQ and PV modeling of RES and PV modeling of D-STATCOM devices are effectively integrated into the proposed three-phase PFA. The accuracy of the proposed PFA has been tested on the IEEE-13 bus URDN and the results are found to be accurate with the IEEE results. Several study examples have been conducted on the IEEE-13 bus and... [more]

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques for electricity price forecasting (EPF) provides essential information to electricity market participants and managers because of its greater handling capability of complex input and output relationships. Therefore, this research investigates and analyzes the performance of different optimization methods in the training phase of artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for the accuracy enhancement of EPF. In this work, a multi-objective optimization-based feature selection technique with the capability of eliminating non-linear and interacting features is implemented to create an efficient day-ahead price forecasting. In the beginning, the multi-objective binary backtracking search algorithm (MOBBSA)-based feature selection technique is used to examine various combinations of input variables to choose the suitable feature subsets, which minimizes, simultaneously, both the number of... Keywords: distributed control system, distribution network, microgrid control, power sharing, smart grid, voltage regulation
Even the simplest version of the distribution networks face challenges such as maintaining load voltage and system frequency stability and at the same time minimizing the circulating reactive power in grid-forming nodes. As the consumers at the far end of the radial distribution network face serious voltage fluctuations and deviations once the load varies. Therefore, this paper presents an enhanced distributed control strategy to restore the load voltage magnitude and to realize power-sharing proportionally in islanded microgrids. This proposed study considers the voltage regulation at the load node as opposed to the inverter terminal. At the same time, a supervisory control layer is put on to observe and correct the load voltage and system frequency deviations. This presented method is aimed at replacing paralleled inverter control methods hitherto used. Stability analysis using system-wide methodical small-signal models, the MATLAB/Simulink, and experimental results obtained with con... [more]
Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance among Energy Sector Companies
Magdalena Kludacz-Alessandri, Małgorzata Cygańska
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CSR strategy, energy sector, financial performance
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the main drivers of corporate reputation. Many studies show that CSR can positively affect financial performance (FP) and vice versa. However, the relationship between FP and CSR depends on the type of industry in which the company operates, and there is little research regarding the energy sector in this area. The basis of empirical research in this study is slack resource theory which argues that financial performance is the cause of corporate social performance. This paper aims to analyze if financial performance affects corporate social responsibility adoption in energy sector companies. In order to achieve this goal, the study specifically examines the relationship between selected financial performance indicators and CSR adoption. Analyzing an international sample of 219 companies from thirty-two countries for 2020, we observed the statistically significant relations between financial performance and the implementing of the CSR stra... Keywords: dosimetry, electric vehicle, electromagnetic field, exposure assessment, hearing aid, human exposure, implantable medical device, measurement standard, microgrid, pacemaker, railway transportation, uncertainty
Electromagnetic field emissions of modern power systems have increased in complexity if the many power conversion forms by means of power electronics and static converters are considered. In addition, the installed electric power has grown in many everyday applications such as wireless charging of vehicles, home integrated photovoltaic systems, high-performance electrified transportation systems, and so on. Attention must then be shifted to include harmonics and commutation components on one side, as well as closer interaction with humans, that concretizes in impact on physiological functions and interference to implantable medical devices and hearing aids. The panorama is complex in that standards and regulations have also increased significantly or underwent extensive revisions in the last 10 years or so. For assessment, the straightforward application of the limits of exposure is hindered by measurement problems (time or frequency domain methods, positioning errors, impact of uncert... [more]
A New Clustering Approach for Automatic Oscillographic Records Segmentation

Keywords: clustering, oscilographies, power quality
The analysis of waveforms related to transient events is an important task in power system maintenance. Currently, electric power systems are monitored by several event recorders called phasor measurement units (PMUs) which generate a large amount of data. The number of records is so high that it makes human analysis infeasible. An alternative way of solving this problem is to group events in similar classes so that it is no longer necessary to analyze all the events, but only the most representative of each class. Several automatic clustering algorithms have been proposed in the literature. Most of these algorithms use validation indexes to rank the partitioning quality and, consequently, find the optimal number of clusters. However, this issue remains open, as each index has its own performance highly dependent on the data spatial distribution. The main contribution of this paper is the development of a methodology that optimizes the results of any clustering algorithm, regardless of... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, energy management system, hybrid systems, microgrid, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The propagation of hybrid power systems (solar−diesel−battery) has led to the development of new energy management system (EMS) strategies for the effective management of all power generation technologies related to hybrid microgrids. This paper proposes two novel EMS strategies for isolated hybrid microgrids, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses using simulations. The proposed strategies are different from the EMS strategies reported thus far in the literature because the former enable the real-time operation of the hybrid microgrid, which always guarantees the correct operation of a microgrid. The priority EMS strategy works by assigning a priority order, while the optimal EMS strategy is based on an optimization criterion, which is set as the minimum marginal cost in this case. The results have been obtained using MATLAB/Simulink to verify and compare the effectiveness of the proposed strategies, through a dynamic microgrid model to simulate the conditions of a real-time oper... Keywords: concept drift, deep learning, energy consumption prediction, Energy Efficiency, industrial machines
There has been increasing interest in reducing carbon footprints globally in recent years. Hence increasing share of green energy and energy efficiency are promoted by governments. Therefore, optimizing energy consumption is becoming more critical for people, companies, industries, and the environment. Predicting energy consumption more precisely means that future energy management planning can be more effective. To date, most research papers have focused on predicting residential building energy consumption; however, a large portion of the energy is consumed by industrial machines. Prediction of energy consumption of large industrial machines in real time is challenging due to concept drift, in which prediction performance deteriorates over time. In this research, a novel data-driven method multi-regime approach (MRA) was developed to better predict the energy consumption for industrial machines. Whereas most papers have focused on finding an excellent prediction model that contradict... [more]

Keywords: arithmetic optimization algorithm, cost, distribution network, optimal sizing and placement framework, parking lots
In this paper, an optimal sizing and placement framework (OSPF) is performed for electric parking lots integrated with wind turbines in a 33-bus distribution network. The total objective function is defined as minimizing the total cost including the cost of grid power, cost of power losses, cost of charge and discharge of parking lots, cost of wind turbines as well as voltage deviations reduction. In the OSPF, optimization variables are selected as electric parking size and wind turbines, which have been determined optimally using an intelligent method named arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) inspired by arithmetic operators in mathematics. The load following strategy (LFS) is used for energy management in the OSPF. The OSPF is evaluated in three cases of the objective function such as minimizing the cost of power losses, minimizing the network voltage deviations, and minimizing the total objective function using the AOA. The capability of the AOA is compared with the well-known p... [more]

Keywords: distribution system, genetic algorithms, network reconfiguration, service restoration, spanning tree techniques
The distribution network is the most exposed part of the electrical power system relative to different abnormal events; therefore, it reports the highest occurrence rates in terms of electrical and mechanical failures. The present project describes a strategy for restoring faulty areas after the occurrence of an abnormal event causing an outage; consequently, the proposed algorithm is not only focused on the maximization of the connected loads but also deals with the minimization of the switching operations by considering technical operational constraints. The remarked study has two stages: The first one finds an initial set of tie-line candidates using the spanning tree technique, while the second stage applies a genetic algorithm to determine the optimal solution considering all the constraints. Three cases studies have been used to test the proposed algorithm, then the simulation and results of IEEE 13, 37 and 94 node feeders depict the effectiveness of the restoration strategy.

Keywords: battery banks, lifetime of battery banks, optimal sizing, PV power, wind power
Power system scheduling of renewable energy sources has been studied extensively due to the severe increase in pollution caused by conventional energy sources. In this study, a multi-objective scheduling model of a hybrid microgrid is proposed to minimize the cost of hybrid microgrids and maximize the power supply reliability. The main power generation units such as the wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV) cells, and battery banks are used in this hybrid microgrid. In this study, the optimal sizing of PV panels and battery banks are obtained using multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) for the proposed multi-objective scheduling model. The lifetime of battery banks is considered in the energy storage system (ESS) model. Finally, the practicality of the scheduling model proposed in this study is verified by four examples.

Keywords: electric distribution systems, power flow analysis, PRO power units, salinity gradient
Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) power units, which produce electrical energy from salinity gradient sources located at coastlines, are a technology still in the process of maturation; however, there is an expectation that this technology will need to be integrated into electrical distribution networks. Such integration will drive changes in the electric response of the distribution systems which may lead to harmful operating conditions. Power flow analysis is a tool used to reveal the steady-state operating condition of distribution systems and which could be extended to study and address the integration of PRO power units. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, such extension of power flow analysis has not yet been addressed in the literature. Accordingly, this paper comprehensively provides a model to evaluate the electric current and complex power produced by PRO power units. This model is directly embedded in the forward-backward sweep (FBS) method, extending the power flow analysi... [more]

Although Indonesia’s electrification ratio reached 99.2% in 2020, it has shown stagnating electrification since 2018. This is because most of the remaining areas that need to be electrified are remote and have unique characteristics that hamper implementation of microgrids for providing energy access. Furthermore, not only the deployment but also the long-term sustainability of microgrids is crucial for ensuring continuity of energy access. This paper aims to investigate the scaling and sustainability challenges of remote microgrid development in Indonesia by analyzing microgrids in the Maluku and North Maluku provinces. This study is a two-part publication; the first part focuses on identifying challenges in Indonesia’s remote microgrid development, while the second part focuses on potential technology solutions. In the first part, an assessment of energy access within a multi-tier framework was conducted, which was then analyzed using a multi-dimensional (institutional, social, techn... [more]

According to the features of the topology and working principle of PQID, this paper summarized the types of internal faults and analyzed the characteristics of different types of faults. Based on the shortcomings of existing mechanical switches as a bypass method, corresponding adaptive fault ride-through strategies are proposed for different types of faults, and a comprehensive simulation test has been carried out. The results show that the proposed strategy can adaptively ride through unit faults and effectively improve the output waveform quality during th... [more]
