Optimal Design of Passive Power Filters Using the MRFO Algorithm and a Practical Harmonic Analysis Approach including Uncertainties in Distribution Networks
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: harmonics analysis, optimal design, passive power filter, power quality
The design of Passive Power Filters (PPFs) has been widely acknowledged as an optimization problem. This paper addresses the PPF parameters design problem using the novel Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO) algorithm. Moreover, an analytical method based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is proposed to investigate the harmonic performance of such an optimally designed PPF with variations in power networks. The MRFO algorithm has shown a superior solution-finding ability, but a relatively higher computational effort in comparison with other recently proposed algorithms. The harmonic performance of the optimal PPF solution with uncertainties was analyzed using the proposed method. The results imply that the optimally designed PPF can effectively attenuate the high-order harmonics and improved the system performance parameters over different operating conditions to continually comply with the standard limits. The proposed MCS method showed that the optimally designed PPF reduced the volt... [more]

Integrating Smart Grid Devices into the Traditional Protection of Distribution Networks
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: contingencies, IED, intelligent agents, multiagent systems, power distribution, rule-based system, smart grids, traditional urban protection
Smart grids are a reality in distribution systems. They have assisted in the operation, control, and most of all, the protection of urban networks, significantly solving the contingencies of these networks. This paper treats the initial stage of implementing smart grid switching devices in distribution networks. In this stage, smart grid technologies need to operate with the traditional protection elements (such as fuses, reclosers, and sectionalizers). This fact can create trouble in the protection schemes because there are two distinctive philosophies. In some companies, especially those without substantial capital, these two protection philosophies can run together for many years. The most popular intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) available in the market are studied to verify their features and the possibility to incorporate techniques to allow the two philosophies to work together. After that, the proposed approach shows how the existing IEDs can interact with the traditional d... [more]

Optimal Service Restoration Scheme for Radial Distribution Network Using Teaching Learning Based Optimization
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: protective devices, radial distribution system, service restoration
In the event of a fault isolation process, all loads located downstream from the faulted point become out of service, and as a consequence, the power interruption affects a greater portion of the radial distribution system. This paper proposes an optimal Service Restoration (SR) method that entails changing the network topology configuration via optimal tie-switch and section switch combinations. However, when the network topology configuration is performed, it results in increased load currents. As a result, some Protective Devices (PDs) can operate undesirably and some network branches may become unprotected. Therefore, it is essential to consider protection constraints in the SR problem to maintain service continuity during power interruptions. The proposed method aims at optimal SR with minimum out-of-service loads, minimum power loss, and improved voltage profiles and at the same time ensures PDs operate correctly during the normal and overloading conditions. The proposed method w... [more]

Application of Block Sparse Bayesian Learning in Power Quality Steady-State Data Compression
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: block sparse Bayesian learning, compressed sensing, data compression, evaluation indicators, power quality steady-state data
In modern power systems, condition monitoring equipment generates a great deal of steady-state data that are too large for data transmission and, thus, data compression is needed. Therefore, there is a balance to strike between compression quality and data accuracy. Greedy algorithms are effective but suffer from low data reconstruction accuracy. This paper proposes a block sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL)-based data compression method. Based on the prior distribution and posterior probability of the sparse signals, it uses the Bayesian formula to excavate the block structure of these signals. This paper also adds two indicators to the evaluation process to validate the proposed method. The proposed method is effective in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), relative root mean square error (RRMSE), amplitude error, energy recovery percentage (ERP), and angle error. The first three indicate better performance of the proposed method than the traditional method by giving the same compress... [more]

Using Energy Storage-Based Grid Forming Inverters for Operational Reserve in Hybrid Diesel Microgrids
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: arctic communities, diesel hybrid systems, grid bridge system, grid-forming inverter, islanded microgrid, spinning reserve
In remote arctic communities, where access to a bulk electrical grid interconnection is not available, the implementation of islanded microgrids has been the most viable way to produce and distribute electricity services to their inhabitants. Historically, these islanded grids have relied primarily on diesel generators or hydropower resources to supply the baseload. However, this practice can result in increased expense due to the high costs associated with fuel transportation and the significant amounts of on-site storage necessary when fuel transportation is unavailable during winter months. In order to mitigate this problem, arctic microgrids have started to transition to a hybrid-source operational mode by incorporating renewable energy sources that are inherently variable in nature, such as wind or solar. Due to their highly stochastic behavior, these hybrid-source islanded microgrids can pose potential issues related to power quality due to introduction of rapid net load fluctuat... [more]

Control of a Three-Phase Current Source Rectifier for H2 Storage Applications in AC Microgrids
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: AC microgrids, buck-type rectifier, current-source rectifier, electrolyzer applications
The share of electrical energy from renewable sources has increased considerably in recent years in an attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To mitigate the uncertainties of these sources and to balance energy production with consumption, an energy storage system (ESS) based on water electrolysis to produce hydrogen is studied. It can be applied to AC microgrids, where several renewable energy sources and several loads may be connected, which is the focus of the study. When excess electricity production is converted into hydrogen via water electrolysis, low DC voltages and high currents are applied, which needs specific power converters. The use of a three-phase, buck-type current source converter, in a single conversion stage, allows for an adjustable DC voltage to be obtained at the terminals of the electrolyzer from a three-phase AC microgrid. The voltage control is preferred to the current control in order to improve the durability of the system. The classical control of the... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Batteries, cost functions, DER, microgrids, renewables, storage
Generation dispatching is a challenge in islanded microgrids due to the operational and economic restrictions in isolated zones. Furthermore, the impact of usual operational network changes in topology, load demand, and generation availability may become significant considering the grid size. This research paper presents a detailed multiple cost function modeling methodology of an optimal power flow algorithm applied to a non-interconnected zone in Colombia. The optimal power flow (OPF) formulation includes cost functions related to renewable resources as presented in the isolated zone and a complete model of the charging and discharging of batteries. Additionally, the flexibility of the proposal is tested using three different network topologies with a characteristic daily load curve from the zone. The main contribution of this paper lies in the implementation of an optimal power flow including cost functions of renewable sources for isolated microgrids. A test case for a non-intercon... [more]

Distribution Locational Marginal Price Based Transactive Energy Management in Distribution Systems with Smart Prosumers—A Multi-Agent Approach
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand response, distribution locational marginal price, electricity markets, microgrids multi-agent system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transactive energy
This work proposes a distribution locational marginal price (DLMP)-based transactive energy (TE) framework for distribution systems with enthusiastic or smart prosumers. The framework uses a multi-agent system (MAS) as the basis on which the proposed TE model, i.e., distribution locational marginal price (DLMP) based TE management system (DTEMS), is implemented. DTEMS uses a novel metric known as the nodal earning component, which is determined by the optimal power flow (OPF) based smart auction mechanism, to schedule the TE transactions optimally among the stakeholders by alleviating the congestion in the distribution system. Based on the individual contributions to the congestion relief, DTEMS ranks the prosumers and loads as most valuable players (MVP) and assigns the energy trading price according to the category of the player. The effectiveness of the proposed TE model is verified by simulating the proposed DTEMS for a modified 33 bus radial distribution system fed with various pl... [more]

An Experimental Comparison between an Ironless and a Traditional Permanent Magnet Linear Generator for Wave Energy Conversion
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ironless electrical machines, linear electrical machines, permanent magnet generators (PMG), Permanent Magnet Linear Generators (PMLG)
Permanent Magnet Linear Generators (PMLGs) are currently being studied for sea wave energy harvesting. Typically, a PMLG consists of an iron-made armature and a moving translator. The permanent magnets adoption produces parasitic effects, such as cogging force, and the machine weight increment. A solution could be the adoption of an ironless configuration, accepting a power density reduction. This paper investigates the use of ironless PMLGs in sea wave energy conversion systems by an experimental comparative analysis between an iron PMLG prototype and an ironless PMLG prototype, which share the same geometry. The main electrical and mechanical parameters (resistance, mass, and magnetic fields) were preliminarily measured. Subsequently, open-circuit and load tests were carried out to compare the induced voltages, the energy transferred to a resistive load, efficiency and the load average power. The reported comparison shows that iron PMLG performances are significantly superior to the... [more]

Operation of a Power Grid with Embedded Networked Microgrids and Onsite Renewable Technologies
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand response, intelligent energy management systems, renewable energy integration
The international community has set ambitious targets to replace the use of fossil fuels for electricity generation with renewable energy sources. The use of large-scale (e.g., solar farms) and small-scale solutions (e.g., onsite green technologies) represents one way to achieve these goals. This paper presents a mathematical optimization framework to coordinate the energy decisions between the distribution network and the networked microgrids embedded within it. Utility-scale renewable and conventional generators are considered in the distribution network, while the microgrids include onsite renewable generation and energy storage. The distribution network operator utilizes demand-side management policies to improve the network’s efficiency, and the microgrids operate under these programs by reducing their energy usage, scheduling the electricity usage under dynamic tariffs, and supplying energy to the grid. The uncertainty of renewable energy sources is addressed by robust optimizati... [more]

Current Status and Future Trends of Power Quality Analysis
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Big Data, observational data analysis, power quality, quality indices
In this article, a systematic literature review of 153 articles on power quality analysis in PV systems published in the last 20 years is presented. This provides readers with an overview on PQ trends in several fields related to instrumental techniques that are being used in the smart grid to visualize the quality of the energy, establishing a solid literature base from which to start future research. A preliminary appreciation allows us to intuit that higher-order statistics are not implemented in measurement equipment and that traditional instrumentation is still used for the performance of measurement campaigns, not yielding the expected results since the information processed does not come from an electrical network from 20 years ago. Instead, current networks contain numerous coupled load effects; thus, new disturbances are not simple; they are usually complex events, the sum of several types of disturbances. Likewise, depending on the type of installation, the objective of the P... [more]

Analysis of Fault Characteristics of Distribution Network with PST Loop Closing Device under Small Current Grounding System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, loop closing device, phase-shifting and grounding transformer, phase-shifting transformer, small current grounding system
With the rapid development of cities and the increasing complexity of distribution network systems, the cableization of transmission lines and the diversification of power users have brought new challenges to the supply reliability of distribution networks. Short-time outages caused by power outages and maintenance are one of the factors that affect the reliability of the power supply in the distribution network. The non-stop load transfer through a phase-shifting transformer (PST) operation can effectively improve the reliability of power supply to complex distribution systems. Considering the operation mode and structure form and fault type of the urban distribution network in China, comparing and analyzing the applicable scenarios of different neutral grounding methods, and based on the structure and zero sequence path characteristics of PST, an improved PST-based phase shifting and grounding transformer loop closing device with low power consumption is proposed. Distributed Secondary Control in Microgrids Using Synchronous Condenser for Voltage and Frequency Support
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed control, distributed energy resources, microgrids, secondary control, synchronous condenser
A high share of distributed energy resources (DERs) in power distribution grids has posed many challenges for system operation and control. Microgrid (MG) application with different distributed control approaches for DERs has been drawn a lot of attention from the research community to provide more flexibility, reliability and resilience for the system. This paper develops a distributed secondary control for DERs in MGs and on top of that using synchronous condenser (SC) participating in the secondary control for voltage support. The proposed distributed secondary control framework of MGs is designed to obtain four objectives as follows: (i) frequency restoration, (ii) average voltage restoration, (iii) arbitrary active power sharing among SGs and BESSs and (iv) arbitrary reactive power sharing among all SGs, BESSs and SCs. The comparison results under different scenarios show that with SC participating in the distributed secondary control in MGs, the system frequency and voltage respo... [more]

Kron Reduction Based on Node Ordering Optimization for Distribution Network Dispatching with Flexible Loads
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network dispatching, flexible loads, graph theory, Kron reduction, node ordering optimization
Kron reduction is a general tool of network simplification for flow calculation. With a growing number of flexible loads appearing in distribution networks, traditional Kron reduction cannot be widely used in control and scheduling due to the elimination of controllable and variable load buses. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved Kron reduction based on node ordering optimization whose principles guarantee that all the boundary nodes are retained eventually after eliminating the first row and the first column in every step according to the order, thereby making it possible to take full advantage of their potential to meet different requirements in power system calculation and dispatching. The proposed method is verified via simulation models of IEEE 5-bus and 30-bus systems through illustrating the dynamic consistency of the output active power of the generator nodes and the power flow data of preserved nodes before and after reduction.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: biomass energy sector, factor analysis, innovations, shadow economy
The shadow economy is a significant factor in impoverishing the economies of countries and unequal operating and competitive conditions distort the market economy system, as opaque parallel activities impoverish socially responsible business units. The biomass energy sector faces this risk because the biomass supply chain is not yet fully secure and balanced. The study conducted by the authors showed that the manifestations of the shadow economy in the biomass energy sector are possible in the biomass production and transportation sub-sectors. Lack of digitization and poor resource management can lead to the problem of misuse of resources, which has non-transparent economic activities. Bidirectional electric vehicle supply equipment and charging stations (EVSE) offer new business models and can provide services to the electrical grid. The smart grid lab in Vienna gives unique testing possibilities of future smart grids, as different type of electrical equipment can be operated at a reconstructed, well-known distribution grid. In this work the harmonic and supraharmonic emissions of a bidirectional EVSE are measured according to IEC61000-4-7 and IEC61000-4-30 Ed3 standard as well as the high-frequency grid impedance. In addition, the efficiency and the power factor are determined at various operating points. Although THDi at nominal power (10 kW) is very low and the efficiency and power factor is very high, at low power levels the opposite situation arise. Supraharmonic emissions remain stable independent of the charging/discharging power, and both wideband and narrowband emissions occur. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: averaging consensus algorithm, demand response, dispatchable sources, distributed optimal dispatch, real-time optimization, utility-connected microgrid
This paper introduces a modified consensus-based real-time optimization framework for utility-connected and islanded microgrids scheduling in normal conditions and under cyberattacks. The exchange of power with the utility is modeled, and the operation of the microgrid energy resources is optimized to minimize the total energy cost. This framework tracks both generation and load variations to decide optimal power generations and the exchange of power with the utility. A linear cost function is defined for the utility where the rates are updated at every time interval. In addition, a realistic approach is taken to limit the power generation from renewable energy sources, including photovoltaics (PVs), wind turbines (WTs), and dispatchable distributed generators (DDGs). The maximum output power of DDGs is limited to their ramp rates. Besides this, a specific cloud-fog architecture is suggested to make the real-time operation and monitoring of the proposed method feasible for utility-conn... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed energy generation, energy dispatching, energy management systems, Energy Storage, microgrids, optimal sizing, Optimization, vehicle-to-grid, vehicle-to-home
The vehicle-to-grid concept emerged very quickly after the integration of renewable energy resources because of their intermittency and to support the grid during on-peak periods, consequently preventing congestion and any subsequent grid instability. Renewable energies offer a large source of clean energy, but they are not controllable, as they depend on weather conditions. This problem is solved by adding energy storage elements, implementing a demand response through shiftable loads, and the vehicle-to-grid/vehicle-to-home technologies. Indeed, an electric vehicle is equipped with a high-capacity battery, which can be used to store a certain amount of energy and give it back again later when required to fulfill the electricity demand and prevent an energy shortage when the main-grid power is limited for security reasons. In this context, this paper presents a comparative study between two home microgrids, in one of which the concept of vehicle-to-home is integrated to provide a case... [more]
