Keywords: combination weights, electric vehicle charging station, fuzzy Delphi method, fuzzy Grey relation analysis-Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje (fuzzy GRA-VIKOR), optimal siting, sensitivity analysis, Sustainability
Optimal siting of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) is crucial to the sustainable development of electric vehicle systems. Considering the defects of previous heuristic optimization models in tackling subjective factors, this paper employs a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework to address the issue of EVCS siting. The initial criteria for optimal EVCS siting are selected from extended sustainability theory, and the vital sub-criteria are further determined by using a fuzzy Delphi method (FDM), which consists of four pillars: economy, society, environment and technology perspectives. To tolerate vagueness and ambiguity of subjective factors and human judgment, a fuzzy Grey relation analysis (GRA)-VIKOR method is employed to determine the optimal EVCS site, which also improves the conventional aggregating function of fuzzy Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). Moreover, to integrate the subjective opinions as well as objective information, exp... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution network, induction generator, rotor slip, short circuit calculation, steady-state equivalent circuit, symmetrical components
This paper presents an improved current source equivalent model method to determine the short-circuit current of a distribution system with multiple fixed-speed and variable-speed induction generators (IGs). The correlation coefficients of flux components between stator and rotor under the unsymmetrical fault are analyzed using the positive and negative sequence steady-state equivalent circuits of an IG. The terminal voltage and current responses of fixed-speed and variable-speed IGs with and without the rotor slip changes under different penetration levels are compared to investigate the coupling relation between the short-circuit currents of IGs and the nodal voltages in the distribution network. Then the transient equivalent potential of an IG at the grid fault instant is derived. Sequence components of the short-circuit current in the network can be determined using the proposed technique. The correctness of the proposed method is verified using dynamic simulation.

Keywords: demand response, instability, negawatt, weather changes
Negawatt trading is expected to improve energy efficiency via the prediction of peak demands and power-saving requests. However, the amount of power saved by consumers is not stable. The accurate prediction of demands and making appropriate requests with respect to power saving are difficult obstacles that need to be overcome in order to attain useful negawatt trading processes. To increase the accuracy of predictions and requests, earlier research suggests some methods or linear problems. On the other hand, the investigation of factors that affect consumption is important for correcting the current instability. In this research study, weather changes including temperature, time passing, and the consciousness of consumers are considered as important factors against electricity demands. In this paper, we propose a behavioral model of consumers using weather data. By using this behavioral model, the effectiveness of the suggested methods in earlier research for improving negawatt trading... [more]

Keywords: distributed energy resources, distributed optimization, energy communities, energy trading, optimal power flow
Energy communities have been designed to empower consumers while maximizing the self-consumption of local renewable energy sources (RESs). Their presence in distribution systems can result in strong modifications in the operation and management of such systems, moving from a centralized operation to a distributed one. In this scope, this work proposes a distributed community-based local energy market that aims at minimizing the costs of each community member, accounting for the technical network constraints. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is adopted to distribute the market, and preserve, as much as possible, the privacy of the prosumers’ assets, production, and demand. The proposed method is tested on a 10-bus medium voltage radial distribution network, in which each node contains a large prosumer, and the relaxed branch flow model is adopted to model the optimization problem. The market framework is proposed and modeled in a centralized and distributed fashion... [more]

Keywords: heavy overload, load forecasting, LSTM, network distribution transformer, XGBoost
In order to effectively carry out the heavy overload monitoring and maintenance of public transformers in the distribution network, ensure the reliability of the distribution network power supply, and improve customer satisfaction with electricity consumption, this paper presents a short-term heavy overload forecasting method for public transformers based on the LSTM-XGBOOST combined model. The model extracts heavy overload feature variables from four dimensions, including basic parameter information, weather, time, and recent load, and constructs a short-term second highest load prediction model based on the LSTM algorithm to obtain the predicted value of the second highest load rate. After aggregating the heavy overload feature variables and the predicted second highest load rate, the XGboost algorithm is employed to construct a short-term heavy overload prediction model for public transformers to judge whether the public transformers display heavy overload. The test results show tha... [more]

Keywords: demand coincidence factor, incentive-based demand response, price-based demand response, reinforcement Q-learning, replay memory exchange
International agreements support the modernization of electricity networks and renewable energy resources (RES). However, these RES affect market prices due to resource variability (e.g., solar). Among the alternatives, Demand Response (DR) is presented as a tool to improve the balance between electricity supply and demand by adapting consumption to available production. In this sense, this work focuses on developing a DR model that combines price and incentive-based demand response models (P-B and I-B) to efficiently manage consumer demand with data from a real San Juan—Argentina distribution network. In addition, a price scheme is proposed in real time and by the time of use in relation to the consumers’ influence in the peak demand of the system. The proposed schemes increase load factor and improve demand displacement compared to a demand response reference model. In addition, the proposed reinforcement learning model improves short-term and long-term price search. Finally, a descr... [more]

Keywords: combinatorial optimization, conductor selection, distribution systems, energy losses, power flow
This article addresses the problem of the optimal selection of conductors in asymmetric three-phase distribution networks from a combinatorial optimization perspective, where the problem is represented by a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model that is solved using a master-slave (MS) optimization strategy. In the master stage, an optimization model known as the generalized normal distribution optimization (GNDO) algorithm is proposed with an improvement stage based on the vortex search algorithm (VSA). Both algorithms work with discrete-continuous coding that allows us to represent the locations and gauges of the different conductors in the electrical distribution system. For the slave stage, the backward/forward sweep (BFS) algorithm is adopted. The numerical results obtained in the IEEE 8- and 27-bus systems demonstrate the applicability, efficiency, and robustness of this optimization methodology, which, in comparison with current methodologies such as the Newton metahe... Keywords: distribution transformers, high penetration of PV systems, impact on voltage regulation, LV and MV distribution network
The objective of this paper was to analyze the impacts caused by the operation of voltage regulators in electrical distribution networks and to evidence the number of operations in the face of short-duration voltage variation caused by the high intermittency of the connected PV generators. A real LV and MV feeder was used, modeled in OpenDSS software, based on normative standards, adjustments, and technical maneuvers strategically used by the local utility. The analyses considered the temporal variations for the photovoltaic generators and different load demand profiles connected to the feeder. The feeder was submitted to the demand curves varying the load percentage, framing it in high and conventional (nominal) load according to the profiles of consumers and prosumers connected. The simulations made it possible to observe the exacerbated elevation in the number of maneuvers performed by the voltage regulators of the network. The single-phase voltage regulators stood out by the elevat... [more]

One of the major paradigm shifts that will be predictably observed in the energy mix is related to distribution networks. Until now, this type of electrical grid was characterized by an AC transmission. However, a new concept is emerging, as the electrical distribution networks characterized by DC transmission are beginning to be considered as a promising solution due to technological advances. In fact, we are now witnessing a proliferation of DC equipment associated with renewable energy sources, storage systems and loads. Thus, such equipment is beginning to be considered in different contexts. In this way, taking into consideration the requirement for the fast integration of this equipment into the existing electrical network, DC networks have started to become important. On the other hand, the importance of the development of these DC networks is not only due to the fact that the amount of DC equipment is becoming huge. When compared with the classical AC transmission systems, the... [more]

The objective of this research is to propose an efficient energy management system for photovoltaic (PV) generation units connected to monopolar DC distribution networks via convex optimization while considering a day-ahead dispatch operation scenario. A convex approximation is used which is based on linearization via Taylor’s series expansion to the hyperbolic relations between voltages and powers in the demand nodes. A recursive solution methodology is introduced via sequential convex programming to minimize the errors introduced by the linear approximation in the power balance constraints. Numerical results in the DC version of the IEEE 33-bus grid demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed convex model when compared to different combinatorial optimization methods, with the main advantage that the optimal global solution is found thanks to the convexity of the solution space and the reduction of the error via an iterative solution approach. Different objective functions are analy... [more]

Using a variety of renewable energy sources can significantly improve energy system flexibility and efficiency. Energy hubs, which have the function of generating, converting, and storing energy in various forms, are vital facilities in micro-energy networks (MENs). In this paper, we present a Solar-Assisted Compressed Air Energy Storage (SA-CAES) hub which can accommodate and flexibly supply multi-energy by being connected to a power distribution network (PDN) and a district heating network (DHN). We formulate economic dispatch models of the SA-CAES hub, the PDN, and the DHN, respectively. The economic dispatch model is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem (MILP) that can be solved by commercial solvers. Further, the operationally feasible region of the SA-CAES hub is explored by thermodynamic analysis. The results indicate that the operation costs have been reduced by 4.5% in comparison with conventional MENs.

In recent years, the emerging fear of an energy crisis in central Europe has caused an increased demand for distributed energy resources (DER), especially small photovoltaic rooftop installations up to 10 kWp. From a technical point of view, distributed PV in low-voltage networks is associated with the risk of power quality violation, overvoltage, voltage unbalance, harmonics, and violation of the thermal limit of phase conductors, neutral conductors, and transformers. Distribution system operators (DSO) are currently in a position to determine the amount of installed PV power for which reliable and safe network operation is ensured, also known as the photovoltaic hosting capacity (PVHC). The presented study describes a stochastic methodology for PVHC estimation and uses it to analyze a typical LV rural network in the Slovak Republic. Detailed and precise calculations are performed on the 4-wire LV model with accurate results. In this study, we, thus, profoundly analyze the problems wi... [more]

Generally, energy management in smart buildings is formulated by mixed-integer linear programming, with different optimization goals. The most targeted goals are the minimization of the electricity consumption cost, the electricity consumption value from external power grid, and peak load smoothing. All of these objectives are desirable in a smart building, however, in most of the related works, just one of these mentioned goals is considered and investigated. In this work, authors aim to consider two goals via a multi-objective framework. In this regard, a multi-objective mixed-binary linear programming is presented to minimize the total energy consumption cost and peak load in collective residential buildings, considering the scheduling of the charging/discharging process for electric vehicles and battery energy storage system. Then, the Pascoletti-Serafini scalarization approach is used to obtain the Pareto front solutions of the presented multi-objective model. In the final, the pe... [more]
