On the Development of Overcurrent Relay Optimization Problem for Active Distribution Networks
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive protection, directional relays, distributed generation, meshed operation, overcurrent relay optimization
The goal of this review paper will be to address complex optimization functions in the area of overcurrent relay optimization, to inspect and valorize their objectives and to critically examine their application in real distribution networks. Special emphasis will be put on observing the optimization of discrimination time between primary and backup relay pairs, and methods which prevent the latter becoming penalty functions will be shown. Furthermore, the impact of distributed generation units on the overcurrent relay optimization problem will be elaborated in detail. Protection settings of all the existing and new relays must be thoroughly inspected before the connection of new production units, because contributing fault currents may have a significant effect on the solution of the overcurrent optimization problem. This is because the relays being used are of an inverse-type. Next, meshed network operation will be critically assessed in comparison with the actual practice of radial... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC distribution network, fault location, monopolar grounding fault, ReliefF, weighted random forest
Compared with the pole-to-pole short circuit, the fault characteristics are not obvious when a monopolar grounding fault occurs in a DC distribution network, and it is difficult to locate the fault accurately. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a fault location method based on improved ReliefF and Weighted random forest (WRF). The 24 time and frequency-domain fault features of the postfault aerial mode current are calculated, and the most useful features are selected to form the optimal feature subset for input to the fault location estimator. In this paper, the ReliefF algorithm is utilized for automatic feature selection and obtaining the weights of features. In addition, the WRF algorithm is used to build the fault location estimator. Considering the fault location, fault resistance, noise and time window length, the Matlab/Simulink simulation platform is used to simulate the fault situation and compare it with other algorithms. The simulation results show that the average p... [more]

Multiple Initial Point Approach to Solving Power Flows for Monte Carlo Studies
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: approximation theory, distribution networks, electric vehicle charging, Monte Carlo, power-flow
Power flow solvers typically start from an initial point of power injection. This paper constructs a system of multiple initial points (SMIP) to enable selection of an appropriate initial point, with the objective to achieve a balanced improvement in the solution speed and accuracy, for problems with a large number of power flows. The intent is to recover time cost of forming the SMIP through the improvements to each power flow. The SMIP is tested on a time series based Monte Carlo study of Electric Vehicle (EV) hosting capacity in a low voltage distribution network, which has 5.4 million power flows. SMIP is applied to two power flow solvers: a Taylor series approximation and a Z-bus method. The accuracy of the quadratic Taylor series approximation was improved by a factor of 30 with a 27% increase in the solve time when compared against a single no-load initial point. A Z-bus solver with SMIP, limited to two iterations, gave the best performance for the EV hosting capacity case study... [more]

Flexible Low-Carbon Optimal Dispatch of Honeycombed Active Distribution Network
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: carbon emission flow (CEF), honeycombed active distribution network (HADN), optimization dispatch
Microgrids have a strong ability to generate local power and consume renewable energy, which can solve the problems of power supply shortages and greenhouse gas emissions created in the process of social development. The honeycombed active distribution network (HADN) can flexibly, independently, and interconnectedly operate microgrids through power exchange stations, so appropriate HADN dispatch can produce increased low-carbon benefits than general microgrids. In this study, we first designed a model for optimizing HADN with the lowest carbon emission as the target, then we introduced the concept of carbon emission flow into the optimization process to determine the carbon emission level of each element. Finally, we illustrated and verified the proposed model by a HADN composed of three microgrids. The optimization results of the case study showed that by scheduling the DGs within the microgrids, the total carbon emissions of the system were reduced from 123,328.1 to 117,688 kg CO2; t... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy management system, management strategy, microgrid, networked microgrid, power distribution grid
Microgrids (MGs) and networked (interconnected) microgrids (NMGs) are emerging as an efficient way for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) into power distribution systems. MGs and NMGs can disconnect from the main grid and operate autonomously, strengthen grid resilience, and help mitigate grid disturbances and maintain power quality. In addition, when supported by sophisticated and efficient management strategies, MGs and NMGs have the ability to enhance power supply reliability. However, their deployment comes with many challenges, in particular regarding the efficient management of DERs. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution systems, jellyfish search algorithm, network reconfiguration, operational reliability
In this paper, the electricity network automation based on Power Network Reconfiguration (PNR) is implemented to improve the operational reliability of distribution systems using jellyfish search algorithm. For this purpose, system average interruption frequency index (SAIFI), system average interruption unavailability index (SAIUI) and total energy not supplied (TENS) are critical measures. In this paper, a new optimization technique of jellyfish search (JFS) algorithm is employed for distribution network reconfiguration for reliability improvement. It is concerned with the moving patterns of jellyfish. They are divided into three categories. The jellyfish could flow towards the ocean current or between its own swarm. Meanwhile, whenever the food supply is adequate, the jellyfishes are attracted to its location. It is formulated considering the three reliability indices of SAIFI, SAIUI and TENS, simultaneously in a multi-objective model based on the weight factors. The proposed method... [more]

Review of Battery Energy Storage Systems Modeling in Microgrids with Renewables Considering Battery Degradation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: battery degradation, battery energy storage system, lithium ion battery, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The modeling of battery energy storage systems (BESS) remains poorly researched, especially in the case of taking into account the power loss due to degradation that occurs during operation in the power system with a large penetration of generation from renewables and stochastic load from electric vehicles (EV). Meanwhile, the lifetime varies considerably from the manufacturer’s claim due to different operating conditions, and also depends on the level of renewable energy sources (RES) penetration, cyclic operation, temperature, discharge/charge rate, and depth of discharge. Choosing a simplistic approach to the degradation model can lead to unreliable conclusions in choosing the best management strategy and significant investment and operating costs. Most existing BESS models in stationary applications either assume zero degradation costs for storage or simplify battery life to a linear function of depth of discharge (DOD), which can lead to additional error in estimating the cost of... A Two-Phase Hybrid Trading of Green Certificate under Renewables Portfolio Standards in Community of Active Energy Agents
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active energy agent (AEA), green certificate (GC) trading, multi-option-based matching, peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, renewables portfolio standards (RPS)
The future distribution network is a community involving numerous active energy agents (AEAs) and a local operator. Each AEA is obligated to meet the renewables portfolio standards (RPS) with enough green certificates (GCs), which can be obtained from renewable energy consumption or from GC trading. This paper concentrates on the GC trading in AEA community and proposes a two-phase hybrid mechanism, which combines the peer-to-peer (P2P) phase and the centralized phase. In Phase 1, GCs are traded among AEAs in P2P manner. All AEAs are classified into two types: naïve and sophisticated, each of which has the specific preference in GC trading. Additionally, each AEA finds trading partners by adopting multi-option-based matching. In Phase 2, the remaining GCs are traded between AEAs and the local operator. Numeric studies are performed on a 30-AEA community in three different market scenarios: globally balanced, undersupplied, and oversupplied. Simulation results indicate the optimality of... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed secondary control, dynamic event-triggered, islanded AC microgrid
In this paper, the frequency/voltage restoration and active power sharing problems of islanded AC microgrids are studied. A novel distributed dynamic event-triggered secondary control scheme is proposed to reduce the communication burden. The continuous monitoring of event-triggered conditions and Zeno behavior can be fundamentally avoided by periodically evaluating event-triggered conditions. In addition, by introducing an adaptive coefficient related to the system deviations, the control performance can be improved. Sufficient conditions to ensure the stability of the system are provided through a Lyapunov function. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: comprehensive grey correlation degree, DC distribution network, fault location, traveling differential current
Flexible DC distribution networks have a strong capacity for new energy consumption and have received extensive attention from scholars in recent years, but fault location for DC distribution lines is a difficult task. To solve this problem, we propose using a comprehensive grey correlation degree analysis to analyze the similarity of aerial mode traveling differential current waveforms at the first and last ends of a DC line, thus achieving fault location by obtaining the optimal time shift. Additionally, we built a six-terminal flexible DC distribution network model in Matlab/Simulink for simulation and validation, showing that the method can complete the rapid and accurate location of all types of faults on a DC line, and that it possesses an anti-transition resistance capability, making it suitable and highly reliable for cases of low sampling frequency.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distributed generation, distributed network, ensemble bagged trees method, Fault Detection, high impedance fault, protection scheme, protection strategy, soft normally open point, variational mode decomposition
The increasing integration of renewable sources into distributed networks results in multiple protection challenges that would be insufficient for conventional protection strategies to tackle because of the characteristics and functionality of distributed generation. These challenges include changes in fault current throughout various operating modes, different distribution network topologies, and high-impedance faults. Therefore, the protection and reliability of a photovoltaic distributed network relies heavily on accurate and adequate fault detection. The proposed strategy utilizes the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and ensemble bagged trees method to tackle these problems in distributed networks. This article presents a deep theoretical analysis of the Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) regulator for the control of first-order systems, directly compared to a “traditional” Proportional Integral (PI) regulator. To complete the theoretical study, ADRC and PI are implemented into the model of a single-phase Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter to regulate the voltage of a Direct Current (DC) network. Facing different types of disturbances and DC network parameters variations, strengths and weaknesses of the two controllers are highlighted. Adaptive Resilient Control of AC Microgrids under Unbounded Actuator Attacks
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: containment, inverters, microgrids, resilience, unbounded attacks
Existing secondary control methods using fault-tolerant and/or H∞ control techniques for multi-inverter microgrids generally assume bounded faults and/or disturbances. Herein, we study unknown unbounded attacks on the input channels of both frequency and voltage control loops of inverters that could deteriorate the cooperative performance and affect the microgrid stability. We propose a fully distributed attack-resilient control framework using adaptive control techniques that, using stability analysis with Lyapunov techniques, are shown to preserve the uniformly ultimately bounded consensus for frequency regulation and voltage containment. Moreover, the ultimate bound can be set by adjusting the tuning parameters. The proposed result is validated for a modified IEEE 34-bus test feeder benchmark system augmented with four inverters.
