February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active distribution network, Dynamic Modelling, general model, renewable distributed generation
With a proliferation of diverse types of renewable distributed generation (DG) into the distribution network, an equivalent model of an active distribution network (ADN) is extremely important, since the detailed modeling of the whole ADN is much more complex and time consuming. However, different studies developed different model structures of ADNs, which are difficult to be applied in a power system simulation. At the same time, the DG’s low voltage ride through the (LVRT) control was not considered in the existing ADN model, which may lead to a large modelling error. In this paper, a general equivalent model is developed for the ADN with a significant amount of DGs, based on a two-step modelling method. Step one, motivated by the dynamic similarities between the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines, direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (DDPMSG)-based wind turbines, and photovoltaic (PV) generation, a general model structure of a renewable DG is in... Keywords: battery energy storage, distributed generation, electric vehicles, microgrids, vehicle-to-building
In an electrical microgrid, distributed renewable generation is one of the main tools used to achieve energy sustainability, cost efficiency and autonomy from the grid. However, reliance on intermittent power sources will lead to a mismatch between generation and demand, causing problems for microgrid management. Flexibility is key to reducing the mismatch and providing a stable operation. In such a context, demand response and energy storage systems are the main factors that contribute to flexibility in a microgrid. This paper provides an assessment of the technical and economic impacts of a microgrid at the building level, considering photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage and the use of electric vehicles in a vehicle-to-building system. The main novel contributions of this work are the quantification of system efficiencies and the provision of insights into the design and implementation of microgrids using real on-site data. Several tests were conducted using real on-site d... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-port power electronic interface, reinforcement learning, reliability, smart grid
This paper presents a power distribution system that prioritizes the reliability of power to critical loads within a community. The proposed system utilizes reinforcement learning methods (Q-learning) to train multi-port power electronic interface (MPEI) systems within a community of microgrids. The primary contributions of this article are to present a system where Q-learning is successfully integrated with MPEI to reduce the impact of power contingencies on critical loads and to explore the effectiveness of the subsequent system. The feasibility of the proposed method has been proven through simulation and experiments. It has been demonstrated that the proposed method can effectively improve the reliability of the local power system—for a case study where 20% of the total loads are classified as critical loads, the system average interruption duration index (SAIDI) has been improved by 75% compared to traditional microgrids with no load schedule.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 transport, gas distribution network, gas transportation network, Hydrogen, industry gas demand, synthetic methane
With the growing need for decarbonization, the future gas demand will decrease and the necessity of a gas distribution network is at stake. A remaining industrial gas demand on the distribution network level could lead to industry becoming the main gas consumer supplied by the gas distribution network, leading to the question: can industry keep the gas distribution network alive? To answer this research question, a three-stage analysis was conducted, starting from a rough estimate of average gas demand per production site and then increasing the level of detail. This paper shows that about one third of the German industry sites investigated are currently supplied by the gas distribution network. While the steel industry offers new opportunities, the food and tobacco industry alone cannot sustain the gas distribution network by itself.

Keywords: backup, battery energy storage, microgrid, power outages, power quality
The reliability of energy supply is an important factor for end-users of electricity. Although many advances and efforts have been made by distribution companies to guarantee energy quality, weak feeders and grids are still usually found. As an alternative to minimize such problems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) can be used to supply energy to users in the case of power outages or major energy quality problems. This paper presents test results on a real application scenario in a microgrid with different load configurations in the moment of interruption. The tests were compared to each other to analyze the impact found in each scenario. In addition to those, real unpremeditated cases of power quality problems were also discussed, and the performance of the utilized BESS was evaluated.

Keywords: artificial immune systems, distributed generation, distribution system reconfiguration, fuzzy logic
Nowadays, the high penetration of automation on smart grids challenges electricity companies in providing an efficient distribution networks operation. In this sense, distribution system reconfiguration (DSR) plays an important role since it may help solve real-time problems. This paper proposes a methodology to solve the DSR problem using artificial immune systems (AIS) based on a new, efficient, and robust approach. This new methodology, called Enhanced Artificial Immune Systems (EAIS), uses the values of the currents in wires for intelligent mutations. The problem is accomplished by a multi-objective optimization with fuzzy variables, minimizing power losses, voltage deviation, and feeders load balancing. A comparison with other DSR solution methods is presented. The method is compared with two other previously proposed methods with the help of the 33-bus, 84-bus, and 136-bus distribution systems. Different scenarios are analyzed, including the optimal location of the Distributed Ge... [more]

Keywords: control, cyber-security, false data injection attacks, microgrids, mitigation layer
The wide use of communication layers in DC microgrids to transmit voltage and current measurements of each distributed generator unit (DGU) increases the possibility of exposure to cyber-attacks. Cyber-attackers can manipulate the measured data to distort the control system of microgrids, which may lead to a shutdown. This paper proposes distributed mitigation layers for the false data injection attacks (FDIA) on voltages and currents of DGUs in meshed DC microgrids. The proposed control strategy is based on integrating two layers for cyber-attack detection and mitigation to immune the primary and the secondary control loops of each DGU. The first layer is assigned to mitigate FDIAs on the voltage measurements needed for the voltage regulation task of the primary control loop. The second layer is devoted to the mitigation of FDIAs on the DGU current measurements, which are crucial for the secondary control level to guarantee the proper current sharing of each DGU. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backward/forward sweep algorithm, distributed generation, islanded AC microgrid, power flow, self-adaptation
This paper presents an algorithm for solving the power flow (PF) problem of droop-regulated AC microgrids (DRACMs) operating in isolated mode. These systems are based on radial distribution networks without having a slack bus to facilitate conventional computations. Moreover, distributed generation units have to distribute the power and voltage regulation among themselves as a function of operating frequency and voltage droop rather than having a slack bus that regulates voltage and power demands. Based on the conventional backward/forward sweep algorithm (BFS), the proposed method is a derivative-free PF algorithm. To manage the absence of a slack bus in the system, the BFS algorithm introduces new loops, equations, and self-adaptation procedures to its computation procedures. A comparison is presented between the proposed BFS algorithm and other state-of-the-art PF algorithms, as well as PSCAD/EMTDC. In comparison to existing algorithms, the proposed approach is fast, simple, accurat... [more]

Due to the increasing demand for electricity around the world, different technologies have been developed to ensure the sustainability of each and every process involved in its production, transmission, and consumption. In addition to ensuring energy sustainability, these technologies seek to improve some of the characteristics of power systems and, in doing so, make them efficient from a financial, technical, and environmental perspective. In particular, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is one of the power generation technologies that has had the most influence and development in recent years due to its easy implementation and low maintenance costs. Additionally, since PV systems can be located close to the load, power losses during distribution and transmission can be significantly reduced. However, in order to maximize the financial, technical, and environmental variables involved in the operation of an electrical system, a PV power generation project must guarantee the proper loc... A microgrid is a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources that can fill the gap between the dependence on a bulk power grid and the transition to renewable energies. The islanded mode presents itself as the most interesting scenario, when local controllers should maintain the power quality standards based on several parameters. A tool specifically focused on the process of parameter tuning of the secondary consensus-based control for inverter-based islanded microgrids was proposed in this paper. One often-quoted drawback in this process is the great number of parameters that must be tuned, even for a very simple microgrid structure. To manage such a large number of parameters, the design of experiments was used in this study. The main motivation for this work was to present an optimized way to define the correct parameters for the secondary consensus control for inverter-based islanded microgrids. The study shows how experimental design methodology can be an effic... [more]

Keywords: distribution networks, PV systems, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart grids, STATCOMs
A combined PSO-ANN control is proposed in this work to achieve the best voltage regulation in a distribution network, based on quick response and minimum average voltage deviation. The Jordanian Sabha Distribution Network (JSDN) with PV Farms is used as a real case study to examine a voltage variation issue. Two STATCOMs are used to solve the voltage fluctuation problem on the network’s three buses. The required reactive powers of STATCOMs for voltage regulation during load variation are calculated in offline mode using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Despite its high performance in solving voltage issue in the JSDN network, the PSO controller is unable to react promptly to dynamic changes in the network. An artificial neural network (ANN) is therefore suggested as an online mode controller for quick and efficient voltage regulation. The offline dataset is used to train the ANN for online voltage regulation utilizing the MATLAB-Tool Box. At an average voltage deviation (... [more]

Keywords: distributed PV sources, low-voltage distribution network, reactive power sharing, voltage regulation
With the intensive integration of photovoltaic (PV) sources into the low-voltage distribution networks (LVDN), the nodal voltage limit violations and fluctuation problem cause concerns on the safety operation of a power system. The intermittent, stochastic, and fluctuating characteristics of PV output power leads to the frequent and fast fluctuation of nodal voltages. To address the voltage limit violation and fluctuation problem, this paper proposes a distributed nodal voltage regulation method based on photovoltaic reactive power and on-load tap changer transformers (OLTC). Using the local Q/V (Volt/Var) feedback controller derived from the grid sensitivity matrix, the voltage magnitude information is adopted to adjust the output of PV systems. Moreover, in order to share the burden of voltage regulation among distributed PV systems, a weighted distributed reactive power sharing algorithm is designed to achieve the voltage regulation according to the rated reactive power. Wind turbine generators (WTGs) are highly sensitive to the disturbances of the grid and tend to disconnect quickly during a voltage dip (when the voltage value is less than 80% of the nominal voltage) or when the frequency is greatly changed. As an increasing number of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) are incorporated into the modern power grid, system operators expect PMSG-WT to play an active role in low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) and primary frequency regulation (PFR). Consequently, PMSG-WTs must be capable of supplying additional active power in response to changes in system voltage and frequency. In this context, a new de-loaded technique enhanced by a fuzzy-logic controller is suggested to develop the PMSG-pitch angle control (PMSG-PAC). The studied MG consists of a wind farm (WF), variable load, and a battery energy storage system (BESS). The WF contains five PMSG-WTs which are considered to be the principal resource. The proposed DT-FLC ensures maximum aerodynam... [more]

Keywords: Cauchy-M estimate, IEEE 33-bus model, robust RVFLN, RVFLN
Fault detection is an important issue in today’s distribution networks, the structure of which is becoming more complex. In this article, a data-based Cauchy distribution weighting M-estimate RVFLNs method is proposed for short-circuit fault detection in distribution networks. The proposed method detects short circuits based on current and voltage measurements. In addition, noises were added to the data to ensure the robustness of the method. The performance of the method was examined in the RTDS RTS simulator using the IEEE 33-bus-bar system model with the help of real-time simulations. The success rate of the proposed method is between 98% and 100% for low-impedance (0 ohm) short-circuit faults, depending on the fault type. The success rate of high-impedance (100 ohm) short-circuit faults, which are more difficult to detect, is between 80% and 92%, depending on the fault type.

Accurate fault location is challenging due to the distribution network’s various branches, complicated topology, and the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs). The diagnostics for power system faults are based on fault localization, isolation, and smart power restoration. Adaptive multi-agent systems (MAS) can improve the reliability, speed, selectivity, and robustness of power system protection. This paper proposes a MAS-based adaptive protection mechanism for fault location in smart grid applications. This study developed a novel distributed intelligent-based multi-agent prevention and mitigation technique for power systems against electrical faults and cyber-attacks. Simulation studies are performed on a platform constructed by interconnecting the power distribution system of Kenitra city developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK and the multi-agent system implemented in the JADE platform. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Keywords: economic, emissions, environment, gas distribution network, gas losses
This work focuses on a very important and current problem in the gas field: gas losses in natural gas distribution networks and their impact on the environment, as well as on the company operating the network. The paper starts with a bibliographic study and aims to identify the sources leading to losses, estimate loss volumes, reduce these losses by replacing high-risk pipeline sections, as well as trace the economic, environmental, and social impact. The calculation methodologies used in various countries in estimating these consumptions are very diverse. Romania uses a very dense methodology that can prompt very broad variations in the values obtained for technological consumption calculations using Order 18/2014, due to the multitude of parameters that must be estimated. To reduce some of the uncertainties in estimating these parameters, a study was proposed and carried out on the ill-fittings in the natural gas distribution systems. This article reviews the main methodologies employed for the optimal location, sizing, and operation of Distributed Generators (DGs) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) in electrical networks. For such purpose, we first analyzed the devices that comprise a microgrid (MG) in an environment with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and their modes of operation. Following that, we examined the planning and operation of each DER considered in this study (DGs and ESSs). Finally, we addressed the joint integration of DGs and ESSs into MGs. From this literature review, we were able to identify both the objective functions and constraints that are most commonly used to formulate the problem of the optimal integration and operation of DGs and ESSs in MGs. Moreover, this review allowed us to identify the methodologies that have been employed for such integration, as well as the current needs in the field. With this information, the purpose is to develop new mathematical formulations and approaches... [more]

Keywords: demand response, energy management, microgrid, smart building, Stackelberg game
This paper presents an energy management strategy (EMS) based on the Stackelberg game theory for the microgrid community. Three agents or layers are considered in the proposed framework. The microgrid cluster (MGC) refers to the agent that coordinates the interactions between the microgrids and the utility grid. The microgrid agent manages the energy scheduling of its own consumers. The third agent represents the consumers inside the microgrids. The game equilibrium point is solved between different layers and each layer will benefit the most. First, an algorithm performs demand response in each microgrid according to load models in smart buildings and determines the load consumption for each consumer. Then, each microgrid determines its selling price to the consumers and the amount of energy required to purchase from the utility grid to achieve the maximum profit. Finally, the balance point will be obtained between microgrids by the microgrid cluster agent. Moreover, the proposed meth... [more]

Keywords: grid impact, location of generating units, low-voltage (LV) distribution network, mathematical modeling, photovoltaic (PV), power losses, power quality
Currently, in rural networks with a large amount of distributed generation, PV installations are often disconnected due to the excessively high voltage in the network, which often exceeds the limit value, in accordance with the PN-EN 50160 standard. Disconnecting such an installation extends the return on investment costs by preventing the generation of electricity for the owner’s needs and results in the consumption of this energy from the grid. In such a case, the recipient has to bear the costs related to the purchase of this energy. In order to solve the problem of excessively high voltage in a low-voltage distribution network with a large amount of distributed generation, the authors of this article proposed a new approach to the use of electricity from these sources. In order to present the benefits of the proposed solution, a computer simulation was used. In order to carry it out, a mathematical model of a low-voltage power grid with distributed generation was developed using th... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC microgrids, optimal efficiency, output voltage regulation, wireless power transfer (WPT), zero voltage switching (ZVS)
This paper presents an auxiliary passive circuit and control design for wireless power transfer (WPT) systems in DC microgrids to achieve optimal power transfer efficiency while maintain accurate output voltage regulation. An auxiliary inductance is added at the transmitter resonator to form a current sink to ensure zero voltage switching (ZVS) of the primary-side full-bridge inverter with even extremely light load conditions. Moreover, an adaptive proportional−integral (PI) controller is adopted to track the output voltage references by regulating the phase shift angle of the phase shift control for the full-bridge inverter. The coefficients of the adaptive PI controller are determined by the inductance of the auxiliary inductance. Both simulation and experimental results validated the effectiveness of the proposed circuit and control design in achieving optimal efficiency and output voltage regulation for WPT systems in DC microgrids with source and load variations.

Keywords: converter control, droop control, grid-tied inverters, microgrids, power control, unbalanced power control
This manuscript describes the operation of a droop-based controller for three-phase converters in the case of the absence of a neutral connection to the grid. The controller is capable of output power tracking and smooth transitions into the islanded operation. While independent per-phase control of the converter output power is possible if a neutral connection is present, its absence implies additional constraints to be considered. Focusing on this latter case, the controller described herein allows the independent control of the active power at the output of each phase of the converter and a smooth transition to the islanded operation. These features are paramount in future smart power systems, such as smart microgrids, for implementing demand−response, power-flow management, and uninterrupted power operation.
