Keywords: DC microgrid, droop control, multi-energy storage coordinated control, photovoltaic power generation
To adapt to frequent charge and discharge and improve the accuracy in the DC microgrid with independent photovoltaics and distributed energy storage systems, an energy-coordinated control strategy based on increased droop control is proposed in this paper. The overall power supply quality of the DC microgrid is improved by optimizing the output priority of the multi-energy storage system. When photovoltaic and energy storage work simultaneously, the proposed method can dynamically adjust their working state and the energy storage unit’s droop coefficient to meet the system’s requirements. In DC microgrids with energy storage units of different capacities, the proposed strategy can be used to maintain the stability of bus voltage, improve the equalization speed and accuracy of the energy storage state of charge, and avoid the shutdown of energy storage units due to overcharge or discharge. Verification of the proposed strategy is implemented with MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results... [more]

Keywords: energy management system, interconnected microgrids, microgrid cluster, multi-microgrid architectures, multi-microgrid operation and control
Several issues of individual microgrids (MGs) such as voltage and frequency fluctuations mainly due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources’ (RESs) power production can be mitigated by interconnecting multiple MGs and forming a multi-microgrid (MMG) system. MMG systems improve the reliability and resiliency of power systems, increase RESs’ utilization, and provide cost-efficient power to the consumers. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the conducted studies in the MMG area summarizing different operational goals and constraints proposed in the literature for efficient operation of MMGs. Besides, different MMG architectures in which the MGs can be interconnected to form an MMG system and their characteristics are discussed. This paper also provides a state-of-the-art review on different control strategies and operation management methodologies for the operation and control of MMGs in centralized, decentralized, distributed, and hierarchical structures. A class... [more]

Keywords: fuel cell vehicles, gas distribution network, hydrogen production, ISO 14687 contaminants
The widescale distribution of hydrogen through gas networks is promoted as a viable and cost-efficient option for optimising its application in heat, industry, and transport. It is a key step towards achieving decarbonisation targets in the UK. A key consideration before the injection of hydrogen into the UK gas networks is an assessment of the difference in hydrogen contaminants presence from different production methods. This information is essential for gas regulation and for further purification requirements. This study investigates the level of ISO 14687 Grade D contaminants in hydrogen from steam methane reforming, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, and alkaline electrolysis. Sampling and analysis of hydrogen were carried out by the National Physical Laboratory following ISO 21087 guidance. The results of analysis indicated the presence of nitrogen in hydrogen from electrolysis, and water, carbon dioxide, and particles in all samples analysed. The contaminants were at l... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arbitrary sampling, fast convergence, Lyapunov function, microgrid, secondary control
This paper proposes a novel distributed secondary control of MGs for fast convergence considering asynchronous sampling. With the employment of the algorithm, optimal power sharing and voltage restoration are implemented simultaneously. First, the hierarchical control objectives concerned with economic operation and voltage quality are introduced. Then, the execution process of the fast convergence algorithm is described for weighted average state estimation, with the illustration of corresponding features and the application in cooperative control. Further, the relevant stability issue is discussed based on large-signal dynamic modeling and a sufficient stability condition is derived based on the Lyapunov−Krasovskii theory. Our approach offers superior reliability, flexibility and robustness because of the loose implementation in terms of its performance concern, which is essential when the distributed consensus protocol is likely to yield toward deviation or even instability under ar... Keywords: accurate positioning, detecting point, fault location, single-phase earth fault
Aiming at the fast and accurate location of a single-phase ground fault in the distribution network, a single terminal injection signal location method, based on the standing wave principle, is proposed. Firstly, the double conductor standing wave principle formation, based on uniform transmission line theory, is analyzed, and the mathematical model of the fault distance algorithm is established. Secondly, a fault detection circuit is built by simulation, and the distribution trend of the standing wave and its relationship with unit capacitance and unit inductance are studied. By setting the source signal frequency and detection point interval and other parameters, the fault location of this method under direct grounding fault and through grounding resistance fault is simulated and studied. Finally, the fault distance is calculated and located by an experiment. The results show that the positioning accuracy is high, which verifies the effectiveness of the standing wave positioning meth... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: forecasting, reservoir, series analysis
Reservoirs are natural or artificial lakes used as a source of water supply for society daily applications. In addition, hydroelectric power plants produce electricity while water flows through the reservoir. However, reservoirs are limited natural resources since water levels vary according to annual rainfalls and other natural events, and consequently, the energy generation. Therefore, forecasting techniques are helpful to predict water level, and thus, electricity production. This paper examines state-of-the-art methods to predict the water level in Catalan reservoirs comparing two approaches: using the water level uniquely, uni-variant; and adding meteorological data, multi-variant. With respect to relating works, our contribution includes a longer times series prediction keeping a high precision. The results return that combining Support Vector Machine and the multi-variant approach provides the highest precision with an R 2 value of 0.99.

Keywords: DFIG, floquet multiplier, poincaré map, power systems, time series data
Measurement-based technology has been developed in the area of power transmission systems with phasor measurement units (PMU). Using high-resolution PMU data, the oscillatory behavior of power systems from general electromagnetic oscillations to sub-synchronous resonances can be observed. Studying oscillations in power systems is important to obtain information about the orbital stability of the system. Floquet multipliers calculation is based on a mathematical model to determine the orbital stability of a system with the existence of stable or unstable periodic solutions. In this paper, we have developed a model-free method to estimate Floquet multipliers using time series data. A comparative study between calculated and estimated Floquet multipliers has been performed to validate the proposed method. The results are provided for a sample three-bus power system network and the system integrated with a doubly fed induction generator.

Keywords: fault-line selection, MICEEMDAN, multi-scale weighted permutation entropy, Recurrence Plot, Yolov5 network
Distribution system fault signals contain severe noise components. In order to solve the problem of distribution network fault-line selection, a fault-line selection method based on modifying the Improved Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition Adaptive Noise (MICEEMDAN) algorithm, Recurrence Plot, and Yolov5 network is proposed. First, ICEEMDAN is optimized using multi-scale weighted permutation entropy (MWPE). MICEEMDAN can decompose an electrical signal into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Recurrence Plot transformation of all IMFs, obtained from decomposition and stitching from top to bottom, realizes the conversion of 1D time series to 2D images. Then, the recurrence maps obtained from all lines in the distribution network are stitched to obtain the distribution network recurrence map, realizing the mining of the fault-signal features of the whole distribution network. Finally, the Yolov5 network is used to mine the fault features of the recurrence map of the d... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution network, global combination criterion, position optimisation, segmentation switch
Under certain constraints, the optimisation of the position and number of sectional switches in overhead lines in distribution networks can improve the reliability and economy of the power supply. Therefore, a global combination criterion is proposed to simultaneously evaluate the combination performance of multiple switch positions, which avoids the tedious traditional problem of adjusting only one switch position at a time and that can possibly fall into a local-optimum problem. We directly determine the optimal solution and ensure a global optimum. Firstly, the optimal switching position in each line segment is analysed as an alternative switching position. Subsequently, the optimal installation-position combination that corresponds to a given number of switches is determined according to the global combination criterion. If the constraints are satisfied, the number of switches is increased by one, and the optimal installation-position combination is then determined until the constr... [more]

Keywords: cascading failures, comprehensive indicators, coupling node pair, cyber-physical system, load redistribution
The adoption of power cyber physical systems (Power CPS) is becoming more and more widespread, and as risk spreads, cascading failures of overload behavior can lead to the collapse of individual or entire networks, becoming a major threat to the network security. Taking the power CPS coupling node pair as the starting point, this paper establishes the comprehensive indicators characterizing the importance and vulnerability of the coupled node pair, based on the idea of intrusion tolerance, when the cyber side is faulted by the network attack, the system actively carries out reasonable and effective dynamic load redistribution based on the indicators updated after each round of cascading, thereby inhibiting the spread of risk, reducing system losses, and improving survivability. The above theory is simulated on the IEEE 30-bus system and concludes that the proposed load redistribution strategy can effectively reduce the loss of the system after attacks.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accurate consensus, asynchronous sampling, convergence deviation, microgrid, secondary control
This paper studies the distributed secondary control of DC microgrids (MGs) in the case of asynchronous sampling, including both the stability condition and accurate consensus algorithm. The asynchrony means that the update actions of each distributed generation (DG) based on the local information and information received from neighbors are independent of the actions of others at sampled discrete times, which would cause deviation from the accurate convergence and even lead to instability in the worst case. First, a small-signal model of MG installed with secondary voltage control is established to include the individual sampling periods. A stability criterion based on the periodic continuity of sampling instant offset is thus formulated to reveal a stability mapping of multiple sampling. By quantifying the accuracy deviations caused by the asynchrony, an improved ratio consensus strategy is proposed that allows the deviation to be estimated accurately via an auxiliary signal and compe... Keywords: A-Star algorithm (AS), distribution network, dynamic road traffic index (DRTI), mobile emergency power source (MEPS), wavelet neural network (WNN)
Recently, with the large scale of power grids and the increase in frequency of extreme weather, the safe and stable operation of power systems is facing great challenges. Therefore, mobile emergency power source (MEPS) are a promising and feasible way to deal with extreme weather and reduce economic losses. However, the current urban power grid and transportation network are closely coupled, and the congested traffic hinders the rapid configuration of MEPSs. Therefore, this paper proposes an MEPS configuration scheme considering real-time traffic conditions. Firstly, the dynamic road traffic index (DRTI) is defined, which can fully describe the dynamic characteristics of traffic. The wavelet neural network (WNN) is used to predict the traffic flow. Then, combined with the knowledge of graph theory, an A-Star algorithm (AS) is used to determine the optimal path. Secondly, the optimal installation location of MEPSs is determined by forward−backward sweep method in distribution network. F... [more]

Keywords: IoT-based microgrids, LEACH protocol, perception layer, routing protocol
Aiming at the problem of uneven clustering and the unreasonable energy consumption of LEACH protocol in the perception layer of IoT-based microgrids of static nodes; in this paper, we propose a stationary-node energy-based routing protocol (SERP). First, we select a dynamic cluster radius for clustering to meet the actual needs of the network during clustering. Then, to solve the problem that the number of cluster heads is difficult to determine, a dynamic optimal cluster head ratio is adopted. The dynamic optimal cluster head ratio can be obtained by minimizing the total energy consumption of cluster formation and the stable transmission phase, which can improve the efficiency of network transmission. Finally, by setting the residual energy factor and distance factor to improve the calculation of the cluster head election threshold, the energy load of the network is more uniform, and the location of the cluster head is more reasonable. Compared with the LEACH protocol and the HEED pro... [more]

Keywords: distribution network, line failures, PH (Progressive Hedging) algorithm, pre-dispatch, typhoon weather
Pre-dispatch is an important way for distribution networks to cope with typhoon weather, enhance resilience and reduce economic losses. In order to accurately describe the faults and consequences of components’ failure in the distribution network, this paper establishes a pre-dispatch model to cope with typhoon weather based on line failures consequence analysis. First, Monte Carlo simulation is used to sample the typical fault scenarios of vulnerable lines. According to the location of switchgear, the distribution network is partitioned and a block breaker correlation matrix is established. Combined with the line fault status, a fault consequence model of distribution lines related to the pre-dispatching strategy is established. Then, the objective function is given to minimize the sum of the cost of the pre-dispatch operation and the power outage, and then establish a pre-dispatch model for the distribution network. In order to reduce the computational complexity, PH (Progressive Hed... [more]

Keywords: Four-winding inductive filtering transformer (FW-IFT), inductive filtering (IF), nonlinear loads, passive filter, power quality
This paper solves the problem of reactive power and harmonics compensation in a high-voltage (HV) distribution network supplying nonlinear loads. An inductive filtering (IF) approach where passive filters connect to the filtering winding of a four-winding inductive filtering transformer (FW-IFT) is presented to enhance the power quality of the public grid. This method can not only greatly suppress harmonic currents of the medium and/or low-voltage (LV) side, but also prevent them from flowing into the public grid. The new main circuit topology, where the FW-IFT has specific filtering winding by adopting the ampere-turn balance of the transformer, is presented. On the basis of the structure of the FW-IFT, the magnetic potential balanced equation and inductive filtering technology, its equivalent circuit and mathematical model are established, and the filtering performances are analyzed in detail. Simulation and experimental results rated at SN-10/0.38 of the FW-IFT are presented to prov... [more]

Keywords: microgrid failures, multi-tier framework, remote electrification framework, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification, rural microgrid
Recent reports from international energy agencies indicate that more than a billion of the population in the world is deprived of basic electricity provisions, confined mainly to the remote communities of developing nations. Microgrids are promoted as a potential technology for electricity provisions to off-grid rural communities, but have failed to reach their value proposition in the context of rural electrification access. In view of the rampant rural electrification issues, the objective of this paper is to furnish an understanding of, and advance the knowledge into, methods to facilitate the design and development of microgrid systems for remote communities in developing countries. The methodology involves an integrative review process of an annotated bibliography to summarise past empirical or theoretical literature. As such, this research is based on evaluation attributes, and identifies the challenges and barriers for remote microgrids through an analysis of 19 case studies. Th... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand-side energy management, load frequency control, smart grid, thermostatically-controlled loads
This paper proposes a novel feedback control strategy, so-called clock-like controller (CLC), to balance power supply and demand in smart microgrids by adjusting the setpoint temperatures of air conditioning (AC) loads. In the CLC algorithm, the grid operator communicates with the individual thermostats via the Internet and adjusts their setpoints by discrete temperature intervals (e.g., ±0.5 °C). Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed algorithm is able to deliver a smooth controllability of the aggregate AC power despite discrete temperature offsets. It can also be used for peak load shedding to mitigate the power generation cost. The CLC algorithm is then integrated into the grid frequency control problem, in which both power generators and loads in the network attempt to regulate the frequency of the system despite disturbances from demand, renewable sources, and local weather conditions. An autonomous microgrid model including a steam and a hydro generator, a solar energy... [more]

Keywords: Building microgrid optimization, component outage, energy management, greenhouse control parameters, rooftop greenhouse optimization
An optimal operation scheme for a building microgrid with a rooftop greenhouse in islanded mode is proposed in this paper. In islanded mode, the fulfillment of entire demand is challenging due to the absence of connection with the utility grid and the scarcity of local resources. The situation becomes more challenging when one or more pieces of equipment fail during the islanded mode. Therefore, in addition to islanded mode operation, component outage and recovery are also considered in this paper. In order to use the available energy efficiently, prioritization of building loads and control parameters of the greenhouse are proposed. A priority weight matrix is adopted to decide the supply of energy to fulfill the requirements of control parameters in the case of insufficient energy. In addition to the normal operation bounds, new bounds are defined to operate the control parameters if the resources are not sufficient. Additional penalties are imposed if the new bounds are chosen, due... [more]

Keywords: climate correction, economic insulation thickness, energy performance, national regulation, NZEB, primary energy requirement
In this study a robust method enabling one to compare the energy performance in different climates was developed. Derived normalization factors allow “to move„ the building from one climate to another with corresponding changes in heating, cooling, and electric lighting energy. Degree days, solar-air temperature and economic insulation thickness were used to normalize space heating and cooling needs. Solar-air temperature based degree days resulted in 5% accuracy in space heating and dry-bulb air temperature based cooling degree days were trustworthy in cooling need normalization. To overcome the limitation of the same thermal insulation in all climates, an economic insulation thickness was applied. Existing and nearly zero energy requirements were contrasted in four countries with a reference office building to analyze the impacts of climate and national regulation on primary energy use. By applying standard energy calculation input data and primary energy factors from European standa... [more]

Transition towards a smart grid requires network modernization based on the deployment of information and communication technologies for managing network operation and coordinating distributed energy resources in distribution systems. The success of the most advanced smart grid functionalities depends on the availability and quality of communication systems. Amongst the most demanding functionalities, those related to fault isolation, location and system restoration (FLISR) to obtain a self-healing smart grid are critical and require low latency communication systems, particularly in case of application to weakly-meshed operated networks. Simulation tools capable of capturing the interaction between communication and electrical systems are of outmost utility to check proper functioning of FLISR under different utilization conditions, to assess the expected improvements of Quality of Service, and to define minimum requirements of the communication system. In this context, this paper inv... [more]

Keywords: daily session prices, electricity market prices, electricity price forecasting, Iberian electricity market (MIBEL), probabilistic forecast
This article presents original probabilistic price forecasting meta-models (PPFMCP models), by aggregation of competitive predictors, for day-ahead hourly probabilistic price forecasting. The best twenty predictors of the EEM2016 EPF competition are used to create ensembles of hourly spot price forecasts. For each hour, the parameter values of the probability density function (PDF) of a Beta distribution for the output variable (hourly price) can be directly obtained from the expected and variance values associated to the ensemble for such hour, using three aggregation strategies of predictor forecasts corresponding to three PPFMCP models. A Reliability Indicator (RI) and a Loss function Indicator (LI) are also introduced to give a measure of uncertainty of probabilistic price forecasts. The three PPFMCP models were satisfactorily applied to the real-world case study of the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL). Results from PPFMCP models showed that PPFMCP model 2, which uses aggregation... [more]
Distribution-Level Flexibility Market for Congestion Management

Keywords: aggregators, demand side flexibility, down-regulation flexibility, flexibility market, up-regulation flexibility
Nowadays, problems facing Distribution System Operators (DSOs) due to demand increase and the wide penetration of renewable energy are usually solved by means of grid reinforcement. However, the smart grid paradigm enables the deployment of demand flexibility for congestion management in distribution grids. This could substitute, or at least postpone, these needed investments. A key role in this scheme is the aggregator, who can act as a “flexibility provider„ collecting the available flexibility from the consumers. Under this paradigm, this paper proposes a flexibility market led by the DSO and aimed at solving distribution grid congestions. The proposal also includes a flexibility market clearing algorithm, which is easy to implement, has low computational requirements and considers the energy rebound effect. The proposed design has the advantage of excluding the DSO’s need for trading in energy markets. Also, the solution algorithm proposed is fully compatible with already existing... [more]

Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, load management, reliability of electrical power systems
Electricity demand has grown over the past few years and will continue to grow in the future. The increase in electricity demand is mainly due to industrialization and the shift from a conventional to a smart-grid paradigm. The number of microgrids, renewable energy sources, plug-in electric vehicles and energy storage systems have also risen in recent years. As a result, future electricity grids have to be revamped and adapt to increasing load levels. Thus, new complications associated with future electrical power systems and technologies must be considered. Demand-side management (DSM) programs offer promising solutions to these issues and can considerably improve the reliability and financial performances of electrical power systems. This paper presents a review of various initiatives, techniques, impacts and recent developments of the DSM of electrical power systems. The potential benefits derived by implementing DSM in electrical power networks are presented. An extensive literatu... [more]

Keywords: uncertainty parameter, upper/lower bound, μ-analysis
In this study, a novel method based on μ analysis is presented to search for the upper/lower bounds of uncertainty parameters in microgrids (MGs). It is well known that uncertainty parameters have important effects in a MG, and they may cause instability. Previous studies have mainly focused on identifying the stability of a MG with its uncertainty parameters, but they did not address the problem of the upper/lower bounds of uncertainty parameters, i.e., how far the uncertainty parameters can be extended while the system remains stable in the small-signal sense. Thus, we developed an approach for identifying the bounds of uncertainty in MGs. In the current paper, first, a method is proposed for linear fractional transformation (LFT) configuration to express the uncertainty parameters, which makes the stability of the nominal MG system independent of any extension of the bounds. An algorithm based on this configuration is then designed to find the upper/lower bounds for both single... [more]

Power systems are becoming more and more complex in nature due to the integration of several power electronic devices. Protection of such systems and augmentation of reliability as well as stability highly depend on limiting the fault currents. Several fault current limiters (FCLs) have been applied in power systems as they provide rapid and efficient fault current limitation. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of the application of different types of FCLs in power systems. Applications of superconducting and non-superconducting FCLs are categorized as: (1) application in generation, transmission and distribution networks; (2) application in alternating current (AC)/direct current (DC) systems; (3) application in renewable energy resources integration; (4) application in distributed generation (DG); and (5) application for reliability, stability and fault ride through capability enhancement.
