The Underground Coal Gasification Process in Laboratory Conditions: An Experimental Study
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency, ex-situ reactor, experiment, material balance, Syngas, underground coal gasification
The underground coal gasification (UCG) process represents a modern and effective coal mining technology that enables coal energy extraction through thermic decomposition. The coal is transformed into syngas by oxidizers (e.g., air, technical oxygen, or water steam) and is injected into a georeactor. The produced syngas is exhausted on the surface, where it is transformed into the desired form of energy. This paper presents an experimental study of two experiments performed in ex-situ reactors. The paper describes the equipment for the UCG process, the physical models of the coal seam, and the analysis of coal. The obtained results from the experiments are presented as the behavior of the temperatures in the coal during the experiment, the syngas composition, and its calorific value. The material balance and effective gasification time of the UCG process were also identified for the individual experiments. The aim was to evaluate the impact of the coal seam model on the gasification pr... [more]

Modelling Electroluminescence Emission in Polymeric Material Using Dimensional Analysis Method
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ageing, dimensional analysis, electroluminescence, insulation, Modelling
The Electroluminescence (EL) technique has garnered significant interest over time for its reliable outcomes that enrich our understanding of the onset of electrical degradation in polymeric material. There is growing interest in combining both the EL technique and space charge measurement methods to obtain a more profound knowledge of the degradation and ageing of insulation. The generation of charge carriers in polymeric materials is widely acknowledged to be a crucial aspect of EL, involving injection, de-trapping, and field dissociation processes. This research investigates the variables that influence how EL emissions behave, including applied voltage or electric field, applied electrical frequency, ageing of material, and selection of materials and gases employed. It was found that these factors can be helpful in predicting the process of electrical ageing in insulation to avoid any catastrophes that may occur. A mathematical approach relating these factors and the intensity of E... [more]

Microstructure of Surface Pollutants and Brush-Based Dry Cleaning of a Trough Concentrating Solar Power Station
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: brush-based dry cleaning, concentrating solar power station, deposition mode, microstructure, surface pollutants
The accumulation of pollutants on the surface of a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) station reduces the power generation efficiency of the whole power plant, affects electricity output, and decreases sales income; therefore, it is particularly important to develop a reasonable and effective cleaning process. Surface pollutants which have a strong interaction with the cleaning process of power stations can determine the quality of cleaning to a certain extent. In this paper, the pollutants on the surface of a trough CSP station with different usage times were collected and characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a particle size analyzer (PSA), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that most of the surface pollutants were of a fine size and included amorphous particles which mainly resulted from the sedimentation of particles suspended for a short time or particles in the process of atmospheric circulation for a long time. Considering the service lif... [more]

Thermomechanical and Thermofluid-Dynamic Coupled Analysis of the Top Cap Region of the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead Breeding Blanket for the EU DEMO Fusion Reactor
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breeding blanket, coupled analysis, DEMO, thermofluid dynamics, thermomechanics, WCLL BB
In the EU, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) Breeding Blanket (BB) concept is one of the candidates for the design of the DEMO reactor. From the past campaign of analysis emerged that the thermal-induced stress led to the failure in the verification of the RCC-MRx structural criteria. Hence, in this paper the classic conceptual design approach, based on a pure FEM thermal and structural analysis, is compared to a coupled thermofluid-dynamic/structural one. Even though the coupled approach requires tremendous modelling effort and computational burden, it surely allows determining the thermal field with a higher level of detail than the FEM analysis. Therefore, in this work, the focus is put on the impact of a more detailed thermal field on the DEMO WCLL BB global structural performances, focusing on the Top Cap region of its Central Outboard Blanket segment. The obtained results have allowed confirming the soundness of the design solution of the Top Cap region, except for concerns ar... [more]

Effect of Concrete Mix Composition on Greenhouse Gas Emissions over the Full Life Cycle of a Structure
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon footprint, circular economy, decarbonization, demolition process, LCA of building materials
As the need to determine and monitor carbon footprints (CFs) in the construction industry grows and given that concrete is a key construction material in this sector, the authors of the article conducted a carbon footprint analysis of 15 different concrete mixtures. The method for determining the carbon footprint of the entire life cycle of concrete was presented in detail. The authors conducted a comparative analysis of the CF for an example structure made of three significantly different concrete strength classes, in addition to determining the CF for 1 m3 of concrete mix. This analysis showed the need to consider the entire structure and the emissivity associated with the consumption of reinforcing steel when selecting the most favorable solution in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The study revealed that the composition of the concrete mix, primarily the type and amount of cement, has the greatest influence on the carbon footprint. Furthermore, the location and geometry of... A Novel Accelerated Stress Test for a Representative Enhancement of Cathode Degradation in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: accelerated stress test, degradation, direct methanol fuel cell, electrochemical active area loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
Performance decay of direct methanol fuel cells hinders technology competitiveness. The cathode electrochemical surface area loss is known to be a major reason for performance loss and it is mainly affected by cathode potential and dynamics, locally influenced by water and methanol crossover. To mitigate such phenomenon, novel materials and components need to be developed and intensively tested in relevant operating conditions. Thus, the development of representative accelerated stress tests is crucial to reduce the necessary testing time to assess material stability. In the literature, the most diffused accelerated stress tests commonly enhance a specific degradation mechanism, each resulting in limited representativeness of the complex combination and interaction of mechanisms involved during real-life operation. This work proposes a novel accelerated stress test procedure permitting a quantifiable and predictable acceleration of cathode degradation, with the goal of being representa... [more]

Structured Catalysts for Non-Thermal Plasma-Assisted Ammonia Synthesis
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ammonia production, non-thermal plasma, Process Intensification, structured catalysts
Ammonia has been intensively studied as a clean, sustainable fuel source and an efficient energy storage medium due to its effectiveness as a hydrogen carrier molecule. However, the currently used Haber−Bosch process requires a large fossil fuel input, high temperatures and pressures, as well as a significant capital investment. These constraints prevent decentralized and small-scale ammonia production at the level of small farms and local communities. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) can promote ammonia synthesis in operating conditions in which, in a conventional process, a catalyst is generally not active. In this study, the production of NTP-assisted catalytic ammonia at milder temperatures and ambient pressure was investigated. Four different structured catalysts were prepared and tested using an experimental plant based on a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The effect of the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) was investigated, as well as the effect of the N2/H2 ratio on catalyst... [more]

Hydrothermal processing of biomass may be able to overcome a series of problems associated with the thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic material into energy and fuels. Investigating the process parameters and an adequate process description is one of the first steps to being able to design and optimize a certain treatment concept. In the present article, we studied process evolution with respect to reaction time in order to evaluate structure changes and kinetics of corn stover decomposition in a hydrothermal reactor. The effect of the biomass-to-H2O ratio was also investigated. A pilot-scale reactor of 18.75 L was used to conduct hydrothermal processing runs at 250 °C at different reaction times (60, 120 and 240 min) and biomass-to-H2O ratios (1:10, 1:15 and 1:20). Solid phase products were characterized by thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental composition (EDX), crystalline phases by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface area (BET). Keywords: lead telluride, nanostructuring, pulsed fs-laser deposition, thermoelectric properties
Pulsed laser deposition operated by an ultra-short laser beam was used to grow in a vacuum and at room temperature natively nanostructured thin films of lead telluride (PbTe) for thermoelectric applications. Different percentages of silver (Ag), from 0.5 to 20% of nominal concentration, were added to PbTe deposited on polished technical alumina substrates using a multi-target system. The surface morphology and chemical composition were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, whereas the structural characteristics were investigated by X-ray Diffraction. Electrical resistivity as a function of the sample temperature was measured by the four-point probe method by highlighting a typical semiconducting behavior, apart from the sample with the maximum Ag concentration acting as a degenerate semiconductor, whereas the Seebeck coefficient measurements indicate n-type doping for all the samples. Photovoltaic Systems through the Lens of Material-Energy-Water Nexus
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CdTe, crystalline silicon PV, material-energy-water nexus, photovoltaics, PV MEW
Solar photovoltaics (PV) has emerged as one of the world’s most promising power-generation technologies, and it is essential to assess its applications from the perspective of a material-energy-water (MEW) nexus. We performed a life cycle assessment of the cradle-to-grave MEW for single-crystalline silicon (s-Si) and CdTe PV technologies by assuming both PV systems are recycled at end of life. We found that the MEW network was dominated by energy flows (>95%), while only minor impacts of materials and water flows were observed. Also, these MEW flows have pyramid-like distributions between the three tiers (i.e., primary, secondary/sub-secondary, and tertiary levels), with greater flows at the primary and lower flows at the tertiary levels. A more detailed analysis of materials’ circularity showed that glass layers are the most impactful component of recycling due to their considerable weight in both technologies. Our analysis also emphasized the positive impacts that increased power-con... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D desalination, multilayer system, photothermal energy generation, spectral-selective solar harvesting
Photovoltaic solar cells have been extensively used for various applications and are considered one of the most efficient green energy sources. However, their 2D surface area solar harvesting has limitations, and there is an increasing need to explore the possibility of multiple layer solar harvest for enhanced energy density. To address this, we have developed spectral-selective transparent thin films based on porphyrin and iron oxide compounds that allow solar light to penetrate multiple layers, significantly increasing solar harvesting surface area and energy density. These thin films are designed as photovoltaic (PV) and photothermal (PT) panels that can convert photons into either electricity or thermal energy for various green energy applications, such as smart building skins and solar desalination. The advantages of this 3D solar harvesting system include enlarged solar light collecting surface area and increased energy density. The multilayer system transforms the current 2D to... [more]

Operational Wind Turbine Blade Damage Evaluation Based on 10-min SCADA and 1 Hz Data
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite materials, damage estimation, predictive maintenance, rainflow counting, wind turbine blade
This work aims to propose a method enabling the evaluation of wind turbine blade damage and fatigue related to a 1 Hz wind speed signal applied to a large period and based on standard 10-min SCADA data. Previous studies emphasize the need for sampling with a 1 Hz frequency when carrying out blade damage computation. However, such methods cannot be applied to evaluate the damage for a long period of time due to the complexity of computation and data availability. Moreover, 1 Hz SCADA data are not commonly used in the wind farm industry because they require a large data storage capacity. Applying such an approach, which is based on a 1 Hz wind speed signal, to current wind farms is not a trivial pursuit. The present work investigates the possibility of overcoming the preceding issues by estimating the equivalent 1 Hz wind speed damage over a 10-min period characterized by SCADA data in terms of measured mean wind speed and turbulence intensity. Then, a discussion is carried out regarding... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorbent, extractant, lithium, lithium recovery, lithium-selective material, multi-stage screening test, oil field brine, sorption, testing protocol
Oil (and natural gas) field brines can be considered promising sources of lithium for the sustainable supply of a growing market. To date, many materials have been developed for direct lithium recovery from brines, but most often these materials have been tested under various conditions, what makes it impossible to compare them. The aim of this research is to provide knowledge that would enable the comparison and selection of effective sorbents for different types of brines. For this purpose, an eight-step experimental protocol was employed. The recovery tests started with a pure lithium solution (300 mg/kg), and then other salts were gradually added, resulting in a brine containing Li+ (220 mg/kg), Na+ (7.21 wt%), Ca2+ (3.0 wt%) and Mg2+ (1000 mg/kg). For selected cases, the effect of pH was also investigated. April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: characterization, comminution, energy consumption, ferrochrome slag, HPGR, Modelling, product size
The present research aims to analyze the comminution behavior of ferrochrome slag using high-pressure grinding rolls. The laboratory bench scale high-pressure grinding rolls were used to study the three significant variables on the grinding efficiency of ferrochrome slag. The Central Composite Design was used to study the process variables, such as roll gap, applied load, and roller speed. The grinding efficiency was evaluated based on the product size and the energy consumption. The results showed that the increased gap between the rolls and roller speed decreases the product size with increased energy consumption. The results also found that an increase in applied load decreases the product fineness with increased energy consumption. The models were developed for the responses of P80 (size of 80% mass finer) and Ecs (specific energy consumption). Both the responses show high regression coefficients, thus ensuring adequate models with the experimental data. The minimum values of the P... [more]

Experimental Study of the Shear Characteristics of Fault Filled with Different Types of Gouge in Underground Gas Storage
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D fractal dimension of roughness, depleted gas storage, fault gouge, filled fault, shear failure, underground gas storage
In the current international situation, energy storage is an important means for countries to stabilize their energy supply, of which underground storage of natural gas is an important part. Depleted gas reservoir type underground gas storage (UGS) has become the key type of gas storage to be built by virtue of safety and environmental protection and low cost. The multi-cycle high injection and production rate of natural gas in the depleted gas reservoir type UGS will cause the in-situ stress disturbance. The slip risk of fault in the geological system increases greatly compared with that before the construction of the storage engineering, which becomes a great threat to the sealing of the gas storage. Reasonable injection and production strategy depend on the reliable assessment of the shear behavior of the fault belt, which can guarantee the sealing characteristics of the UGS geological system and the efficient operation of the UGS. Therefore, the shear behavior of the fault is studi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas production, distillation residue, Gompertz model, methane fermentation
In this paper, the possibility to obtain an alternative source of energy from methane fermentation, catalysed by biomass, has been discussed in detail. As a main substrate, the distillation residue from the distillery industry was taken in the case of mono-fermentation and its co-fermentation with sewage sludge. The results showed that higher biogas and methane production can be obtained in a mono-fermentation process. Fermentation lasted for 23 days, and during this time, 333.14 and 249.64 L/kg VS of the total biogas for mono- and co-fermentation was subsequently obtained, which gives around 63% and 50% of methane in both types of the process, respectively. Additionally, to interpret the experimental data obtained and to predict the trend of the accumulation curves, a simple Gompertz model has been applied. The application of the Gompertz model has enabled us to estimate some important parameters with a strict physical meaning, namely, the maximum production value of the biogas and it... [more]

Influence of Temperature in the Thermo-Chemical Decomposition of Below-Stoichiometric RDF Char—A Macro TGA Study
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: low oxygen conditions, macro TGA, RDF char, temperature
Due to the energy crisis that some countries are facing nowadays, the gasification process appears to be a good alternative to produce some energy from solid materials. Increasingly, gasification involves using wastes as a solid fuel, making the process green and reusing some materials that otherwise could end up in a landfill. However, the process of finding the best gasification parameters of a sample can be very expensive and time-consuming. In this sense, a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) char produced from an original RDF under 30 min at 400 °C was tested on a small-scale reactor using macro thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), as presented in this paper. The goal was to study and evaluate the devolatilization and residual carbon rate of the sample under several conditions and, at the same time, quantify and analyze the released gas. April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode, DSC, HTPXRD, NASICON, sodium-ion battery, substitution, thermal stability
The thermal stability of NASICON-type cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction (HTPXRD) applied to the electrodes in a pristine or charged state. Na3V2(PO4)3 and Na4VMn(PO4)3 were analyzed for their peak temperatures and the exothermic effect values of their decomposition processes, as well as the phase transformations that took place upon heating. The obtained results indicate that Mn-substituted cathode material demonstrates much poorer thermal stability in the charged state, although pristine samples of both materials exhibit similar thermal behavior without any DSC peaks or temperature-induced phase transitions in the studied temperature range. The in situ HTPXRD revealed the amorphization of desodiated Na4VMn(PO4)3-based electrodes occurring at 150~250 °C.
