April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy-efficient building, fiber, hygrothermal performance, nanomaterial, silica aerogel, thermal insulation, thermal render
Aerogel-based renders have been the subject of research in the last few years due to their high thermal insulation characteristics and the need for buildings to become more energy-efficient. This study compares the hygrothermal behaviour of an aerogel-based render (reference) with the same base formulation, replacing the powder with three different fibres (aramid 0.5%, sisal 0.1%, and biomass 0.1%, by total volume) that can be used in buildings’ envelopes. The experimental programme allowed us to characterise and compare the thermophysical properties of the different formulations and then simulate the hygrothermal performance of these solutions when applied to walls for different climatic conditions, considering additional parameters such as total water content, drying potential, water content levels, and thermal insulating performance. These thermophysical parameters were then included in hygrothermal numerical simulations. The results allowed us to verify that the incorporation of fi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bi doping, Cu2Se, power factor, thermoelectric
The influence of Bi doping on the structural and thermoelectric properties of Cu2Se is presented in this work. Cu2−xBixSe (x = 0.00, 0.004, 0.008, 0.012) samples were prepared using conventional solid-state reaction techniques. According to room temperature XRD results, Cu2−xBixSe samples have a monoclinic crystal structure. Doping Bi to the Cu site acts as a donor, lowering the hole concentration, except for the sample with x = 0.004. The resistivity of the Cu2−xBixSe sample increases with an increase in Bi content. Seebeck coefficient data confirm that the holes are the charge carriers in Cu2−xBixSe samples. At 700 K, the Cu1.988Bi0.012Se sample has the highest power factor of 1474 μWm−1K−2, showing great potential in developing high-performance Cu2Se based thermoelectric materials.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: molecular reconstruction method, multiple linear regression, near-infrared spectroscopy, online measurement method, sample selection algorithm
With the increasing attention to environmental protection and strict national standards, the production of high-quality clean gasoline is more and more required in modern refineries. At present, the molecular-level online modeling of the gasoline blending process is rarely reported due to the lack of a proper characterization method. In this study, we have developed a molecular reconstruction method based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. We established a library that comprises an NIR spectrum and molecular composition of known reformates. We developed the sample selection algorithm that finds the sample with an NIR spectrum close to the target sample. The method-solving algorithm based on multiple linear regression was used to obtain the molecular composition of gasoline quickly. The method combines online measurement methods and molecular management technology to achieve online composition reconstruction. Seventy-five groups of reformates were collected to verify the feasibility o... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode materials, cation interdiffusion, double perovskites, proton-conducting solid electrolyte, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Chemical compatibility and cation interdiffusion between the double perovskite cobaltites RBaCo2O6−δ (R = Gd, Pr) and proton-conducting electrolyte BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ were studied. Chemical interaction was found to occur already at 1100 °C as a result of the partial dissolution of RBaCo2O6−δ (R = Gd, Pr) in BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ. Analysis of the element distribution along the cross sections of diffusion couples RBaCo2O6−δ(R = Gd, Pr)|BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ showed strong interdiffusion of cations, with cobalt being the most mobile one. Its diffusion depth in the electrolyte reaches up to several hundreds of micrometers. The addition of NiO as a sintering aid to BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ promotes cation diffusion especially through the grain boundary mechanism, increasing the diffusion depth of Co. The possible implications of cation interdiffusion on the performance of proton-conducting SOFCs are discussed based on the results obtained.

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate, CO2 hydrogenation, methanation, methanol synthesis
Methane and methanol are promising products for CO2 hydrogenation for carbon capture and utilization concepts. In the search for effective, robust, easy-to-manufacture and stable catalysts, supported metal-based catalysts have proven advantageous. Whereas nickel for methane synthesis and copper for methanol synthesis stand out as efficient and cost-effective catalytically active metals, the best choice of support material is still a matter of ongoing debate. This review discusses the potential of the alkaline earth metal oxide MgO as support material for CO2 hydrogenation catalysts. Due to its basicity, it gives access to bifunctional catalysts as it shows pronounced CO2 adsorption capacity. Whereas carbonate formation seems to be beneficial in CO2 methanation, it may even have an adverse effect in methanol synthesis from CO2.

Spray cooling is a heat transfer technology that has already shown its advantages and limitations. There has been increasing interest from academia and industry in combining this technology with nanofluids as coolants, owing to their potential for heat transfer enhancement. Nevertheless, there is a lack of understanding of the physical mechanism leading to this enhancement with the presence of technical problems that prevent the use of nanofluids in spray cooling applications. In this study, we investigate the effect of water-based TiO2 nanofluids on both spray characteristics and heat transfer using an industrial full-cone pneumatic nozzle. For this purpose, three mass concentrations (0.05 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, and 0.2 wt.%) were prepared and tested. We monitored the droplet sizes and velocity profiles with a particle dynamics analysis system. Moreover, the temporal temperature decrease of a heated aluminum block from 190 to 65 °C was measured via an infrared camera to calculate the heat tr... [more]

Keywords: environmental stability, perovskite single crystals, perovskite thin films, photoemission spectroscopy (PES)
Hybrid organic inorganic perovskites have been considered as a potential candidate for the next generational solar cell due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties and rapid development in recent years. However, the biggest challenge to prevent them from massive commercial use is their long-term stability. Photoemission spectroscopy has been widely used to investigate properties of the perovskites, which provide critical insights to better understand the degradation mechanisms. In this article, we review mainly our photoemission studies on the degradation processes of perovskite thin films and single crystals with different environmental factors, such as gases, water, and light by monitoring changes of chemical composition and electronic structure. These studies on the effects by different environmental parameters are discussed for the understanding of the stability issues and the possible solutions.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: accuracy, characterization, hardware-in-the-loop, instrument transformer, merging unit, OPAL, real-time, stand-alone merging unit
The digitalization of a medium voltage network requires huge efforts from distributed system operators and electric utilities. The main reason is attributed to the costs associated with the replacement or introduction of new intelligent electronic devices capable of collecting and digitalizing current and voltage measurements. To this purpose, this paper introduces a new idea of a stand-alone merging unit (SAMU), which features real-time and hardware-in-the-loop technology, completed with accurate voltage and current sensors. Furthermore, the characterization procedure that allows an evaluation of the metrological performance of a complex device, such as a SAMU, is fully described. From the results, it is highlighted that (i) the developed SAMU is capable of performing highly accurate voltage, current, and power measurements; (ii) the characterization procedure is simple and exploitable for all kinds of SAMUs and other synchronized measurement devices.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: artificial graphite, electrochemical performance, Li-ion battery, natural graphite, negative electrode material
The electrochemical performance of modified natural graphite (MNG) and artificial graphite (AG) was investigated as a function of electrode density ranging from 1.55 to 1.7 g∙cm−3. The best performance was obtained at 1.55 g∙cm−3 and 1.60 g∙cm−3 for the AG and MNG electrodes, respectively. Both AG, at a density of 1.55 g∙cm−3, and MNG, at a density of 1.60 g∙cm−3, showed quite similar performance with regard to cycling stability and coulombic efficiency during cycling at 30 and 45 °C, while the MNG electrodes at a density of 1.60 g∙cm−3 and 1.7 g∙cm−3 showed better rate performance than the AG electrodes at a density of 1.55 g∙cm−3. The superior rate capability of MNG electrodes can be explained by the following effects: first, their spherical morphology and higher electrode density led to enhanced electrical conductivity. Second, for the MNG sample, favorable electrode tortuosity was retained and thus Li+ transport in the electrode pore was not significantly affected, even at high ele... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: arc eliminator, arc fault energy, arc protection, IEEE 1584, the pressure of arc gas
This paper presents a method to limit the arc energy and hence the hazard risk category value according to IEEE 1584 by using a system of two oppositely connected multi-sectional thyristor branches. A test circuit for testing the effectiveness of a thyristor arc eliminator was designed and constructed. Arc ignition inside electrical switchgear can be a source of danger for technical personnel. The arc energy calculated according to the algorithms in IEEE 1584 can be significantly reduced by using multi-sectional arc eliminator MSAE. For the actual measuring object, the calculation of the hazardous arc flash zone and the hazard category was carried out for the system not equipped with an arc eliminator, and then the same was performed in a system with an arc eliminator. In parallel, the pressure inside the closed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) electrical box enclosure was measured and then compared with the calculated pressures that could occur during an arc fault. It was found that a Multi-S... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: buildings, conventional control, intelligent control, ON/OFF control, phase change material
The incorporation of phase change materials (PCM) in buildings has the potential to enhance the thermal efficiency of buildings, reduce energy cost, shift peak load, and eventually reduce air pollution and mitigate global warming. However, the initial capital cost of PCM is still high, and thus the establishment of a control strategy has become essential to optimize its use in buildings in an effort to lower investment costs. In this paper, an extensive review has been made with regard to various control strategies applied to PCM-enhanced buildings, such as ON/OFF control, conventional control methods (classical control, optimal, adaptive, and predictive control) and intelligent controls. The advantages and disadvantages of each control strategy are evaluated. The paper further discusses the opportunities and challenges associated with the design of PCM-enhanced buildings in combination with control strategies.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite element analysis, pouch cell, quasi-static testing
To assist in light weighting of electric vehicles by improving the volumetric and gravimetric energy density and the structural performance of the battery pack, a modelling methodology based on a macro finite element model of a pouch cell has been developed. This model treats the core cell structure as a homogeneous orthotropic honeycomb block with the pouch material being defined as an orthotropic fabric with compressive stress elimination. The model considers five compression and bending load cases simultaneously and allows a level of element discretisation that is computationally efficient and appropriate for inclusion in full vehicle and sub-system simulations. The methodology is scalable in that it can be applied to a range of chemistries, external geometries and internal cell constructions. When considering stacks of cells, the model is predictive for both lateral compression and three-point bend, but further work is required to improve the confined compression response.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: emulsified water-based binder, lithium iron phosphate cathode, lithium-ion battery, polyacrylate latex
In the manufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries, the current organic solvent-based processes will inevitably be replaced with eco-friendly water-based processes. For this purpose, the current organic-soluble binder should be replaced with a water-soluble or water-dispersed binder. In this study, a new polyacrylate latex dispersed in water was successfully applied as a binder of lithium-ion battery cathodes for the first time. One of the biggest advantages of the polyacrylate binder is that it is electrochemically stable at the working voltage of typical cathodes, unlike a conventional water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. This implies that the water-dispersed polyacrylate has no limitations for the usage of a cathodic binder. The performance of the polyacrylate binder for lithium iron phosphate cathodes was compared with those of a conventional organic-based polyvinylidene fluoride binder as well as a water-dispersed styrene-butadiene binder. The polyacrylate binder exhibited... [more]
