April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioleaching, chemical extraction, incineration sewage sludge ash, leaching, metals recovery
In the face of material shortages, growing environmental awareness, and technical advancement, incinerated waste materials are being considered secondary resources. Especially incinerated sewage sludge ash is of interest due to its massive and increasing production and relatively stable composition with a satisfying concentration of elements of value. This paper revises the basic methods for recovery of valuable components from incineration sewage sludge and simultaneous removal or stabilization of elements that may negatively influence the environment with further ash usage or storage. The presented work focuses on collating and analysing the efficiency of currently used approaches as well as their limitations and perspectives for future development. Chemical methods analysed include acidic and alkaline leaching, chelating, and sequential leaching. Due to scarce examples from literature, the exploration of a microbiological approach focuses on the mechanisms and potential for applicat... [more]

Practical Approximation of Sheet Losses Taking into Account the Guillotine and Laser Cutting Effect
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cutting effect, electrical steel sheet specific loss, loss approximation, losses in electrical machines
Reducing losses in electrical devices is essential for reducing global energy consumption. Losses in the core of electrical machines constitute a significant part of the overall losses—their share increases with the number of machines powered by PWM converters, especially for high-speed machines. Limiting core losses requires precise determination at the design stage of the device. Achieving this goal is possible thanks to numerical or analytical simulation. A necessary input for this process is the correct determination of the properties of the core material. The sheet loss, however, changes due to the machining process, primarily punching. The subject of the work is to develop a sufficiently accurate approximation of electrical steel sheet-specific loss, taking into account the effects of cutting and the width of a given machine element for a wide range of induction and frequency. The method also enables the extrapolation of losses for higher frequencies relevant from the point of vi... [more]

Experimental/Numerical Investigation and Prediction of Fouling in Multiphase Flow Heat Exchangers: A Review
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: desalination, fouling characterization, heat exchangers, Modelling, monitoring, phase change
Fouling build-up is one of the most challenging problems for heat exchangers in industry. The presence of fouling leads to a degradation of system efficiency, an increase in operating cost, and possibly, a harmful environmental impact. For this reason, fouling analysis has become an extremely important research subject in order to have a safe and efficient operation. The analysis is more difficult where phase change of fluids is involved during the heat transfer process, as in the case of boilers and condensers, which are critical units in industrial facilities. Due to the lack of a comprehensive review of fouling analysis for the case of multiphase heat exchangers, this paper examines available approaches and techniques used for fouling characterization, modeling, monitoring, and prediction in heat exchangers for both single-phase and multiphase heat exchangers with a focus on fouling in thermal desalination systems. It also gives an overview of heat exchanger condition monitoring sol... [more]

Catalytic Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds Using the Core−Shell Fe2O3-Cenospheric Catalyst in a Fluidised Bed Reactor
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: core–shell catalyst, fluidisation, incomplete oxidation products, VOC removal
The results of selected volatile organic compounds (benzene, n-hexane, isopropanol, and formic acid) catalytic oxidation are presented on Fe2O3 cenospheres in the fluidised bed reactor. The core−shell Fe2O3-cenosphere catalyst was developed by applying an Fe layer on cenospheres by FB-MO-CVD (fluidised bed, metal−organic chemical vapor deposition) and following Fe layer oxidation. The efficiency of the decomposition of VOCs was tested in the range of 200 to 500 °C, using the method based on infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The research was focused especially on the analysis of incomplete combustion products, such as CO and oxygen compounds. During the oxidation of isopropanol and n-hexane, in addition to carbon monoxide, species such as acetone, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde were also detected. The oxidation of formic acid proceeded with only a slight emission of carbon monoxide, unexpectedly the oxidation of benzene proceeded in a similar way, and no other products of the incomplete oxi... Finite Element Study of Electrical MHD Williamson Nanofluid Flow under the Effects of Frictional Heating in the View of Viscous Dissipation
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite element method, Matlab bvp4c, numerical integration, viscous dissipation, Williamson fluid
This study addresses heat and mass transfer of electrical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Williamson fluid flow over the moving sheet. The mathematical model for the considered flow phenomenon is expressed in a set of partial differential equations. Later, linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are obtained. The finite element method tackles a reduced system of ODEs with boundary conditions. Galerkin weighted residuals and constructs of weak formulations constitute the basis of this method. An iterative procedure is considered for handling nonlinear terms in a given system of ODEs. Some results acquired using the finite element method are compared with those reported in previous research via the Matlab solver bvp4c in order to validate the obtained solutions of ODEs. It is seen that the velocity profile is decayed by enhancing the Wiesenberg number. The finite element method also converges to an accurate solution by increasing the number of elements, whereas Matlab solv... [more]

Characterizing Complex Deformation, Damage, and Fracture in Heterogeneous Shale Using 3D-DIC
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D-DIC, damage variables, deformation, diametrical compression, strain localization zone, uniaxial compression
Safe drilling and effective fracturing are constant challenges for shale formations. One of the most important influencing factors is the accurate characterization of the deformation and damage caused by inherent lamination and natural fractures. Furthermore, shale formations exhibit fine-scale heterogeneity, which conventional laboratory methods (linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), strain gauges, etc.) cannot distinguish. To overcome these constraints, this research aims to investigate the damage and deformation characteristics of shale samples using three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC). Under uniaxial and diametrical compression, samples of Wolfcamp, Mancos, and Eagle Ford shale with distinct lamination and natural fractures are evaluated. The 3D-DIC system is utilized for image processing, visualization, and analysis of the shale damage process under varying loads. DIC made quantitative full-field strain maps with load (tension, compression, and shear),... [more]

Dynamic State Evaluation Method of Power Transformer Based on Mahalanobis−Taguchi System and Health Index
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: health index, Mahalanobis distance, oil chromatogram, status assessment, transformer
Health status assessment is the key link of transformer-condition-based maintenance. The health status assessment method of power transformers mostly adopts the method based on the health index, which has the problems of multiple parameters of each component and strong subjectivity in the selection of weight value, which is easily causes misjudgment. However, the existing online monitoring system for dissolved gas in transformer oil (DGA) can judge the normal or abnormal state of the transformer according to the gas concentration in a monitoring cycle. Still, there are problems, such as fuzzy evaluation results and inaccurate judgment. This paper proposes a dynamic state evaluation method for power transformers based on the Mahalanobis−Taguchi system. First, the oil chromatography online monitoring time series is used to screen key features using the Mahalanobis−Taguchi system to reduce the problem of excessive parameters of each component. Then, a Mahalanobis distance (MD) calculation... [more]

A Triple-Layer Membrane with Hybrid Evaporation and Radiation for Building Cooling
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building cooling, evaporative cooling, passive cooling, polyethylene aerogel, radiative cooling
Passive cooling for thermal comfort improvement has received extensive attention for its low energy consumption. However, most of the existing passive cooling technologies require a complex system design and supporting equipment, since they cool the ambient air. Herein, we propose a hybrid evaporative and radiative cooling membrane with a hygroscopic hydrogel sandwiched by two layers of a porous polyethylene aerogel (PEA). The hydrogel implements evaporative cooling. Combining the high solar reflection of PEA and the high infrared emissivity of hydrogel, this hybrid membrane also possesses radiative cooling. In addition, the high infrared transmittance and low thermal conductivity of PEA allow direct heat transfer between the hydrogel and human body, instead of the ambient air. Through comparative experiments and theoretical calculations, it is indicated that the net cooling power delivered by the hybrid membrane to the human body is up to 78.45 W m−2, which is much higher than that of... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: battery system, electric vehicle, Latent Heat Storage, phase change material, thermal management, thermal performance enhancement
Electric vehicles battery systems (EVBS) are subject to complex charging/discharging processes that produce various amount of stress and cause significant temperature fluctuations. Due to the variable heat generation regimes, latent heat storage systems that can absorb significant amounts of thermal energy with little temperature variation are an interesting thermal management solution. A major drawback of organic phase change materials is their low thermal conductivity, which limits the material charging/discharging capacity. This review paper covers recent studies on thermal performance enhancement of PCM thermal management for electric vehicles batteries. A special focus is placed on the constraints related to electric vehicles battery systems, such as mass/volume minimization, integration with other battery thermal management systems, operational temperature range, adaptability to extreme regimes and modulation of the melting/solidification behavior. Precision and Accuracy of Pulse Propagation Velocity Measurement in Power Cables
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable diagnostics, measurement accuracy, partial discharge, power cables, pulse propagation, time-domain reflectometry
The partial discharge (PD) measurement is an important method used in determining the condition of medium- and high-voltage cable insulation. Considering the propagation velocity of PD signals in power cables is necessary for determining the location of PD defects. However, the determination of velocity is not straightforward due to propagation-related attenuation and dispersion, which distorts the PD pulse waveform. This introduces a degree of uncertainty into the pulse velocity as well as the PD source locations determined based on that velocity, which is usually considered to be of constant value in PD analysis. This paper investigates the accuracy of the pulse propagation velocity measurement in power cables. Tests were performed on a medium voltage power cable in a laboratory setting using two sets of PD-specific measurement equipment: a high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) and an IEC 60270-compliant conventional measurement system. The propagation velocities and their statis... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bottom ash, Coal, critical raw materials, fly ash, rare-earth elements, REY, yttrium
The growing demand for rare-earth elements and yttrium (REY) in modern technologies has resulted in the systematic depletion of primary ores. For this reason, research is being conducted around the world on alternative sources of rare-earth elements, e.g., on the possibilities of recovering REY from coal waste or coal combustion. The article presents the results of comprehensive tests of the fuel—hard coal, and high-temperature HTA ash, fly ash, and bottom ash. Examined samples were taken from a Polish power plant. In the tests, fuel quality parameters were determined in accordance with the standards; microscopic observations in reflected and transmitted light, as well as a scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS), were used, and chemical and phase composition were determined using ICP-MS and XRD methods, respectively. The distribution of REY between these ashes was analyzed. Their suitability as alternative sources of REY was assessed. The obtained results showed that the process of har... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat pump heating system, performance improvement methods, phase change materials, thermal energy storage
With the development of the economy and society, energy problems have become a great concern. The heat pump-coupled thermal energy storage (TES) system is a potential form of building heating, which can improve the stability of the grid and promote the consumption of renewable energy. Phase change materials (PCMs) are widely used in the field of building heating, but there are still some problems such as unsatisfactory melting points, low thermal conductivity, phase separation, and supercooling, which limit the application of PCMs in heat pump heating systems. Therefore, it is very important to improve PCMs by a performance improvement method. This work first summarizes the classification, advantages and disadvantages of PCMs, and introduces the connection between PCMs and heat pumps. Then, a detailed summary of PCMs applied in heat pump heating systems is presented, and a comprehensive review of the performance improvement methods for PCMs, which include additives, encapsulation, and... Subject: Materials
Keywords: COMSOL multiphysics, four-probe method, humidity sensor, moisture storage function
Prior to the year 2000, air conditioning was not common in many cities throughout the world. However, today, 20 years later, air conditioning is common. This circumstance has a negative impact on the climate. Additionally, the situation regarding energy usage as a result of this is alarming. For a healthy and pleasant livelihood, indoor temperature and air flow must be controlled. False partitions with insulating layers have been used to regulate the temperature inside rooms, but they are unable to regulate the variation in humidity caused by the exchange of water between interior and exterior walls. In this manuscript, we provide a sensory system that can automatically detect relative humidity and temperature. Temperature is sensed at each layer of the false partition using an LM35-based integrated circuit and humidity is detected by an FA−ZnO nano-composite layer through an indoor false partition owing to changes in the material’s resistance. Effect of Oxygen Vacancy on the Crystallinity and Optical Band Gap in Tin Oxide Thin Film
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: calcination, crystallite size, nanoparticles, optical properties, oxygen vacancies, thin film
Herein, we have prepared tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles (NPs), through a co-precipitation method, using SnCl2·2H2O dissolved in distilled water (DW) as a precursor. Then, the prepared NPs were heat treated in a muffle furnace, as a function of temperature, under an open atmosphere. The prepared SnO2 NPs were then re-dispersed in DW, followed by spray casting on a glass substrate, for preparing SnO2 thin films. The average thickness of the fabricated SnO2 thin films was 2.76 µm. We demonstrated a very clear variation in the structural, compositional, and morphological features of the different films (in particular, variation of the density of oxygen vacancies), which altered their electrical and optical properties. Raising the calcination temperature of the SnO2 thin films, from 250 °C to 650 °C, led to a monotonic reduction in the crystallite size, from 10.4 nm to 6.7 nm, and a decrease in the O/Sn ratio, from 5.60 to 4.79. Characterization of the Temperature Profile near Contact Lines of an Evaporating Sessile Drop
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bénard-Marangoni instability, drop evaporation, microscopic fluorescence-based thermometry, temperature measurement
Evaporation of a sessile drop is ubiquitous in nature and has many industrial applications. Despite extensive studies over recent decades, a critical issue, i.e., how temperature varies near contact lines, remains elusive. In this work, we report to date the first direct experimental measurement showing the microscopic temperature distribution near contact lines of an evaporating pinned sessile drop. Using a fluorescence-based thermometry, we find that the temperature at the free interface near contact lines varies drastically along the radial direction, engendering a concentric fringe pattern that evolves over the evaporation lifespan. The formation of such fringe patterns is attributed to a combined mechanism of locally enhanced evaporative cooling at the drop edge and the development of interfacial convective vortices due to Bénard-Marangoni instability. We also study the evaporation dynamics at different initial contact angles and find that the characteristics of this fringe patter... [more]

The Strike-Slip Fault Effects on Tight Ordovician Reef-Shoal Reservoirs in the Central Tarim Basin (NW China)
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: “sweet spot” exploitation, fractured reservoir, reef-shoal reservoir, strike-slip fault, Tarim
The largest carbonate condensate field in China has been found in the central Tarim Basin. Ordovician carbonate reservoirs are generally attributed to reef-shoal microfacies along a platform margin. However, recent production success has been achieved along the NE-trending strike-slip fault zones that intersect at the platform margin. For this contribution, we analyzed the strike-slip fault effects on the reef-shoal reservoirs by using new geological, geophysical, and production data. Seismic data shows that some NE-trending strike-slip faults intersected the NW-trending platform margin in multiple segments. The research indicated that the development of strike-slip faults has affected prepositional landforms and the subsequent segmentation of varied microfacies along the platform margin. In addition, the strike-slip fault compartmentalized the reef-shoal reservoirs into multiple segments along the extent of the platform margin. We show that fractured reef-shoal complexes are favorable... [more]

Keywords: curing inhibition, elastomers, graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, mechanical properties, PDMS, thermal interface materials
This work studies the effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on the thermal and mechanical properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for use as thermal interface materials (TIMs). Solution mixing of 10 wt% GNPs and 40 wt% hBN with PDMS produced TIMs with through-plane thermal conductivity (TC) of 1.24 W m−1 K−1 showing a 519% increase relative to the neat matrix. A synergistic effect between GNPs and hBN was particularly demonstrated when in samples with 48 wt% total filler content, 8 wt% hBN was replaced by GNPs, and the TC was increased by 33%. The elongation at break of the hBN (40 wt%)/GNP (8 wt%) samples reached 151%, representing a 160% increase when compared to samples with only 40 wt% hBN. Moreover, the shore hardness of samples containing 40 wt% hBN was 68 A, and the introduction of 8 wt% GNPs caused a decrease to 38 A. Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 storage, coal swelling, environmental risk assessment, fault reactivation, horizontal well, hydromechanical simulation, regional stress regime
Deep un-mineable coal deposits are viable reservoirs for permanent and safe storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) due to their ability to adsorb large amounts of CO2 in the microporous coal structure. A reduced amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere contributes in turn to the mitigation of climate change. However, there are a number of geomechanical risks associated with the commercial-scale storage of CO2, such as potential fault or fracture reactivation, microseismic events, cap rock integrity or ground surface uplift. The present study assesses potential site-specific hydromechanical impacts for a coal deposit of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin by means of numerical simulations. For that purpose, a near-field model is developed to simulate the injection and migration of CO2, as well as the coal-CO2 interactions in the vicinity of horizontal wells along with the corresponding changes in permeability and stresses. Keywords: gas hydrate, Gulf of Mexico, thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling
The Gulf of Mexico is a widely explored and producing region for offshore oil and gas resources, with significant submarine methane hydrates. Estimates of hydrate saturation and distribution rely on drilling expeditions and seismic surveys that tend to provide either large-scale estimates or highly localized well data. In this study, hydrate reserve characterization is done using numerical simulation at Green Canyon block 955 (GC955). In addition, coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) simulation results show that hydrate saturation and geobody distribution are determined by the thermodynamic conditions as well as reservoir structures, stratigraphic differences, and permeability differences. Hydrate formation due to upflow of free gas and dissociation due to gas production and oceanic temperature rise due to climate change are simulated.
