Laboratory Testing of Fracture Conductivity Damage by Foam-Based Fracturing Fluids in Low Permeability Tight Gas Formations
Klaudia Wilk-Zajdel, Piotr Kasza, Mateusz Masłowski
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: foam rheology, fracture conductivity, nitrogen foamed stimulation fluids, reservoir stimulation
In the case of fracturing of the reservoirs using fracturing fluids, the size of damage to the proppant conductivity caused by treatment fluids is significant, which greatly influence the effective execution of hydraulic fracturing operations. The fracturing fluid should be characterized by the minimum damage to the conductivity of a fracture filled with proppant. A laboratory research procedure has been developed to study the damage effect caused by foamed and non-foamed fracturing fluids in the fractures filled with proppant material. The paper discusses the results for high quality foamed guar-based linear gels, which is an innovative aspect of the work compared to the non-foamed frac described in most of the studies and simulations. The tests were performed for the fracturing fluid based on a linear polymer (HPG—hydroxypropyl guar, in liquid and powder form). The rheology of nitrogen foamed-based fracturing fluids (FF) with a quality of 70% was investigated. The quartz sand and cer... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, slaughterhouse waste, solid fuel
In this study, cattle and pig slaughterhouse wastes (SHWs) were hydrothermally carbonized at 150−300 °C, and the properties of SHW-derived hydrochar were evaluated for its use as a solid fuel. The results demonstrated that increasing the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) treatment temperature improved the energy-related properties (i.e., fuel ratio, higher heating value, and coalification degree) of both the cattle and pig SHW-derived hydrochars. However, the improvements of cattle SHW-derived hydrochars were not as dramatic as that of pig SHW-derived hydrochars, due to the lipid-rich components that do not participate in the HTC reaction. In this regard, there was no merit of using HTC treatment on cattle SHW for the production of hydrochar or using the hydrochar as a solid fuel in terms of energy retention efficiency. On the other hand, a mild HTC treatment at approximately 200 °C was deemed suitable for converting pig SHW to value-added solid fuel. The findings of this study suggest... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CH4 hydrate, CO2 hydrate, conversion mechanism, gas hydrate, guest-molecule exchange, laboratory experiments, mixed-gas hydrates, Raman spectroscopy, solid-state diffusion
The exchange of CH4 by CO2 in gas hydrates is of interest for the production of natural gas from methane hydrate with net zero climate gas balance, and for managing risks that are related to sediment destabilization and mobilization after gas-hydrate dissociation. Several experimental studies on the dynamics and efficiency of the process exist, but the results seem to be partly inconsistent. We used confocal Raman spectroscopy to map an area of several tens to hundreds µm of a CH4 hydrate sample during its exposure to liquid and gaseous CO2. On this scale, we could identify and follow different processes in the sample that occur in parallel. Next to guest-molecule exchange, gas-hydrate dissociation also contributes to the release of CH4. During our examination period, about 50% of the CO2 was bound by exchange for CH4 molecules, while the other half was bound by new formation of CO2 hydrates. We evaluated single gas-hydrate grains with confirmed gas exchange and applied a diffusion equ... [more]

The aim of this study was to investigate and analyze the impact of selected parameters during the tribocharging process of shredded poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) plastics on accumulated electric charge and electrostatic separation effectiveness. The accumulation of electric charge on surfaces of polymer particles as a result of their circular motion forced by the airflow cyclone container was investigated. The impact of the container material, time of tribocharging and the airflow intensity were experimentally examined. A container in which the particles of the considered polymers are electrified with opposite charges was selected. A high ability to accumulate surface charge on small particles of both polymers was demonstrated. The electrified mixed PET/PE-HD was subjected to a separation process. An electrostatic separator designed and constructed by the authors was used for to the separation. In turn, to assess the effectiveness of this sepa... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-crude, co-liquefaction, HTL, lignocellulosic biomass
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is an effective technology for bio-crude production. To date, various co-liquefaction studies were performed with contrasted (different composition) biomasses in subcritical water. Therefore, the present study investigated co-hydrothermal liquefaction of similar kinds of lignocellulosic biomasses (wheat straw, eucalyptus, and pinewood) in supercritical water under equal ratios at 400 °C with catalytic medium (K2CO3). The lower bio-crude and higher solid yields were obtained in co-liquefaction experiments, as compared to liquefaction of individual feedstocks. On the other hand, higher carbon recovery and higher HHVs were noticed in co-liquefaction-derived bio-crudes. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) results showed that organic compounds were detected in all bio-crudes in the order of phenol derivatives > ketones/aldehydes > aromatics > carboxylic acids/esters. The aqueous phase from all samples contained higher TOC in the range of 19 to 3... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: friction angle, glacial tills, shear strength, triaxial testing
This paper presents the findings of a laboratory study of the shear strength and yielding behavior of two glacial till soil deposits from the area of Heiligenhafen, northern Germany. The tests were conducted on reconstituted forms of the soils using a triaxial cell capable of controlling the temperature of the specimens. The experimental program included a series of multi-stage consolidated drained (CD) compression triaxial tests at temperature ranges between 20 and 60 °C. For the temperature range considered in this study, a mild reduction in the effective friction angle of the two till soils of less than 1° was observed due to an increase in temperature from 20 to 60 °C. All the results were carefully assessed in view of the intrinsic soil behavior and fabric, and existing trends are highlighted. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the shearing properties of till deposits, and can contribute to the enhancement of existing soil constitutive models as well as the... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CdTe, solar cells, thin films
CdTe is a very robust and chemically stable material and for this reason its related solar cell thin film photovoltaic technology is now the only thin film technology in the first 10 top producers in the world. CdTe has an optimum band gap for the Schockley-Queisser limit and could deliver very high efficiencies as single junction device of more than 32%, with an open circuit voltage of 1 V and a short circuit current density exceeding 30 mA/cm2. CdTe solar cells were introduced at the beginning of the 70s and they have been studied and implemented particularly in the last 30 years. The strong improvement in efficiency in the last 5 years was obtained by a new redesign of the CdTe solar cell device reaching a single solar cell efficiency of 22.1% and a module efficiency of 19%. In this paper we describe the fabrication process following the history of the solar cell as it was developed in the early years up to the latest development and changes. Moreover the paper also presents future... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: drying stress, electrode composite, gradient distributed ingredients, viscoelasticity
The mechanical behavior of electrode composite during the drying preparation has played a crucial role in the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Our work aimed at developing an integrated analysis method to study the component distribution, mechanical properties, and internal stress of composite coating in the process of electrode drying. The main influence factors of drying stress were thoroughly investigated. It was found that this present model could capture not only the heterogeneity effect of inactive ingredients but also the porosity-dependent viscoelasticity of electrode composite. Meanwhile, the calculated effective modulus and stress evolution upon drying time were in acceptable accord with the experimental data. Furthermore, the rapid solidification markedly increased the drying stress in electrodes and significantly impaired the tensile strength of electrode composite due to the highly gradient distributed constituents. However, the stress level at... [more]

Keywords: Elman neural network, grey wolf optimizer, inverse model, magnetorheological fluid damper, semi-active suspension
To improve the performance of vehicle suspension, this paper proposes a semi-active vehicle suspension with a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper. We designed an optimized fuzzy skyhook controller with grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm base on a new neuro-inverse model of the MRF damper. Because the inverse model of the MRF damper is difficult to establish directly, the Elman neural network was applied. The novelty of this study is the application of the new inverse model for semi-active vibration control and optimization of the semi-active suspension control method. The calculation results showed that the new inverse model can accurately calculate the required control current. The fuzzy skyhook control method optimized by the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm was established based on the inverse model to control the suspension vibration. The simulation results showed that the optimized fuzzy skyhook control method can simultaneously reduce the amplitude of vertical acceleration,... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: FEM, laumontite-rich glutenite reservoir, oil production simulation, rock mechanical properties, stress-induced permeability evolution
PetroChina’s Xinjiang oilfield has a large quantity of tight oil reserves and hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used to achieve commercial production. Some parts of this tight glutenite formation are laumontite-rich and the actual productivity of the hydraulically fractured wells is less than expected. To figure out the ways that laumontite affects tight glutenite well productivity, comprehensive experimental and numerical simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the rock mechanical properties, fluid flow behaviors and the major controlling factor of productivity. Laboratory results indicate that the tight glutenite formation with higher laumontite content has higher initial porosity, permeability but lower yield strength and more severe stress sensitivity in both permeability and fracture conductivity. For laumontite-rich glutenite rocks, there are commonly three types of rock deformation during the loading process: elastic compression, shear dilation and sh... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cuttings bed erosion, drilling fluids, granular-wet rheology, hole-cleaning efficiency, particles transport
The cuttings transport efficiency of various drilling fluids has been studied in several approaches. This is an important aspect, since hole cleaning is often a bottleneck in well construction. The studies so far have targeted the drilling fluid cuttings’ transport capability through experiments, simulations or field data. Observed differences in the efficiency due to changes in the drilling fluid properties and compositions have been reported but not always fully understood. In this study, the cuttings bed, wetted with a single drilling fluid, was evaluated. The experiments were performed with parallel plates in an Anton Paar Physica 301 rheometer. The results showed systematic differences in the internal friction behaviors between tests of beds with oil-based and beds with water-based fluids. The observations indicated that cutting beds wetted with a polymeric water-based fluid released clusters of particles when external forces overcame the bonding forces and the beds started to bre... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency, exergy analysis, induction furnace, iron, melting, method comparison, PhO method, physical optimum
In order to achieve energy and climate goals, energy and resource efficiency are considered a key measure. Limit-value-oriented methods such as the exergy analysis and the physical optimum method are used to show the limits of efficiency improvement. In this context, the physical optimum represents the theoretical ideal reference process. Despite their similarities, no comprehensive comparison to the exergy analysis has been carried out yet. Thus, the purpose of this study is to close this gap by examining differences and intersections using the example of an induction furnace. The minimum energy input according to the physical optimum method is 1327 MJ/t whereas the exergy of the melting product is 1393 MJ/t, depending on transit flows taken into account. The exergy analysis extends considerably beyond the physical optimum method in terms of the complexity and accuracy of the assessment of material flows by using exergy units. The exergy analysis makes clear which exergy is linked to... [more]

A twisted-fin array as an innovative structure for intensifying the charging response of a phase-change material (PCM) within a shell-and-tube storage system is introduced in this work. A three-dimensional model describing the thermal management with charging phase change process in PCM was developed and numerically analyzed by the enthalpy-porosity method using commercial CFD software. Efficacy of the proposed structure of fins for performing better heat communication between the active heating surface and the adjacent layers of PCM was verified via comparing with conventional longitudinal fins within the same design limitations of fin material and volume usage. Optimization of the fin geometric parameters including the pitch, number, thickness, and the height of the twisted fins for superior performance of the proposed fin structure, was also introduced via the Taguchi method. The results show that a faster charging rate, higher storage rate, and better uniformity in temperature dist... [more]

The synergistic conversion of Miscanthus xGiganteous with sulphated zirconia and dilute hydrochloric acid was investigated. The sulphated zirconia was prepared using H2SO4 impregnation and characterised using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Miscroscope (SEM) spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption−desorption measurements. The microwave-assisted reaction was evaluated at various temperatures, reaction times and catalyst-to-biomass ratios, with and without the presence of trace HCl in the solution medium for the conversion of Miscanthus xGiganteous to levulinic acid. The highest levulinic acid yield of 63.8% was achieved at 160 °C, 80 min and a 2:1 catalyst-to-biomass ratio, with 10 mM HCl. The catalyst recyclability was investigated with and without calcination, finding that significant humin deposition on the catalyst surface likely caused catalyst deactivation. The post-reaction solid residue was also characterised using SEM, EDX, XRD, elemental... [more]

The melting of a coconut oil−CuO phase change material (PCM) embedded in an engineered nonuniform copper foam was theoretically analyzed to reduce the charging time of a thermal energy storage unit. A nonuniform metal foam could improve the effective thermal conductivity of a porous medium at regions with dominant conduction heat transfer by increasing local porosity. Moreover, the increase in porosity contributes to flow circulation in the natural convection-dominant regimes and adds a positive impact to the heat transfer rate, but it reduces the conduction heat transfer and overall heat transfer. The Taguchi optimization method was used to minimize the charging time of a shell-and-tube thermal energy storage (TES) unit by optimizing the porosity gradient, volume fractions of nanoparticles, average porosity, and porous pore sizes. The results showed that porosity is the most significant factor and lower porosity has a faster charging rate. A nonuniform porosity reduces the charging ti... [more]

Thermal and mechanical energy storage is pivotal for the effective exploitation of renewable energy sources, thus fostering the transition to a sustainable economy. Hydrogen-based systems are among the most promising solutions for electrical energy storage. However, several technical and economic barriers (e.g., high costs, low energy and power density, advanced material requirements) still hinder the diffusion of such solutions. Similarly, the realization of latent heat storages through phase change materials is particularly attractive because it provides high energy density in addition to allowing for the storage of the heat of fusion at a (nearly) constant temperature. In this paper, we posit the challenge to couple a metal hydride H2 canister with a latent heat storage, in order to improve the overall power density and realize a passive control of the system temperature. A highly flexible numerical solver based on a hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Phase-Field (LB-PF) algorithm is develope... [more]

Due to the inappropriate treatment of dairy wastewater, which can easily cause underground water pollution, there is an increasing need for a novel approach to reuse dairy wastewater. The technology of microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation with environmentally friendly characteristics and high efficiency has been widely used for underground infrastructure remediation. However, there is a lack of in-depth research on the application of this technology under extreme underground environments, such as the borehole of oil wells with high temperature, high pressure, alkaline, and aerobic conditions. In addition, to reduce the cost of this technology when applied on a large scale, we adopted dairy wastewater to cultivate bacteria. Then, we put the bacterial solution into cement slurry in the borehole to improve the cementing quality. In this paper, the rheology properties, mechanical strength, permeability, porosity, and pore distribution of microbial cementing slurry were studi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: laboratory splice tests, multiply belt splices, multiply conveyor belts, textile conveyor belts
Belt conveyors are used for the transportation of bulk materials in a number of different branches of industry, especially in mining and power industries or in shipping ports. The main component of a belt conveyor is its belt, which serves both as a support for the transported material along the conveyor route and as an element in the drive transmission system. Being crucial to the effective and reliable operation of the conveyor, the belt is also its most expensive and the least durable element. A conveyor belt comprises a core, covers and edges. A multiply textile belt, in which the core is constructed of synthetic fibers such as polyamide, polyester or aramid, is the oldest and still the most commonly used conveyor belt type. The plies are joined with a thin layer of rubber or another material (usually the material is the same as the material used in the covers), which provides the required delamination strength to the belt and allows the plies to move relative to each other as the... Keywords: linear y-direction porosity, melting heat transfer, metal foam, nano-enhanced phase change material
The melting flow and heat transfer of copper-oxide coconut oil in thermal energy storage filled with a nonlinear copper metal foam are addressed. The porosity of the copper foam changes linearly from bottom to top. The phase change material (PCM) is filled into the metal foam pores, which form a composite PCM. The natural convection effect is also taken into account. The effect of average porosity; porosity distribution; pore size density; the inclination angle of enclosure; and nanoparticles’ concentration on the isotherms, melting maps, and the melting rate are investigated. The results show that the average porosity is the most important parameter on the melting behavior. The variation in porosity from 0.825 to 0.9 changes the melting time by about 116%. The natural convection flows are weak in the metal foam, and hence, the impact of each of the other parameters on the melting time is insignificant (less than 5%).

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, transformer aging, transformer design, Wiener process, wind power generation
This paper deals with the problem of the optimal rating of mineral-oil-immersed transformers in large wind farms. The optimal rating is derived based on the probabilistic analyses of wind power generation through the Ornstein−Uhlenbeck stochastic process and on thermal model of the transformer through the integration of stochastic differential equations. These analyses allow the stochastic characterization of lifetime reduction of the transformer and then its optimal rating through a simple closed form. The numerical application highlights the effectiveness and easy applicability of the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology allows deriving the rating of transformers which better fits the specific peculiarities of wind power generation. Compared to the conventional approaches, the proposed method can better adapt the transformer size to the intermittence and variability of the power generated by wind farms, thus overcoming the often-recognized reduced lifetime.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: laboratory tensile tests, load-displacement and stress-strain characteristics, partially embedded, rock bolt support
This article deals with a static and quasi-static load using the maximum power of a hydraulic pump. Additionally, quasi-static coefficients for the partially embedded rock bolts were determined. The laboratory tests included 2.2 m long bolts, which were embedded segmentally on the lengths of 0.05 m, 0.3 m and 0.9 m and were tested. To fix the ribbed bolt rods in the steel cylinders, resin cartridges with a length of 0.45 m long were used. The main aim of the research was to determine the load-displacement characteristics. Knowing the bolt rod tensile mechanism, the points of failure in the material continuity were identified, on the basis of which stress-strain characteristics are made. Particular attention was paid to the definition of: tensile stress for the yield point (σ1), maximum stress (σ2), stress at failure (σ3), strain in the elastic range (ε1), strain for maximum stress (ε2) and strain corresponding to the failure (ε3).

Keywords: Biomass, empty fruit bunches, hydrothermal treatment, subcritical water
Hydrothermal pretreatment of biomass can improve fuel characteristics based on the decomposition properties of subcritical water. Thus, this study used a hydrothermal treatment to improve the fuel characteristics of empty fruit bunches (EFBs), which are generated as waste after palm oil extraction. The experimental reaction temperature was increased from 180 °C to 250 °C at an interval of 10 °C and the mass ratios between the dry sample and water content were set to 1:8 and 1:16 so that the sample was sufficiently immersed. Additionally, the material properties of EFB under hydrothermal treatment conditions were investigated using mass and energy yields, elemental analysis, proximate analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of the reaction products. As the reaction temperature increased, the fixed carbon content and heating value increased because volatile matter, including oxygen, was removed first, which i... [more]

Biochemical methane potential (BMP) of anaerobic co-digestion (co-AD) feedstocks is an essential basis for optimizing ratios of materials. Given the time-consuming shortage of conventional BMP tests, a rapid estimated method was proposed for BMP of co-AD—with straw and feces as feedstocks—based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with chemometrics. Partial least squares with several variable selection algorithms were used for establishing calibration models. Variable selection methods were constructed by the genetic simulated annealing algorithm (GSA) combined with interval partial least squares (iPLS), synergy iPLS, backward iPLS, and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), respectively. By comparing the modeling performances of characteristic wavelengths selected by different algorithms, it was found that the model constructed using 57 characteristic wavelengths selected by CARS-GSA had the best prediction accuracy. The world’s need for energy is increasing with the passage of time and the substantial energy demand of the world is met by fossil fuels. Biodiesel has been considered as a replacement for fossil fuels in automotive engines. Biodiesels are advantageous because they provide energy security, they are nontoxic, renewable, economical, and biodegradable and clean sources of energy. However, there are certain disadvantages of biodiesels, including their corrosive, hygroscopic and oxidative natures. This paper provides a review of automotive materials when coming into contact with biodiesel blended fuel in terms of corrosion. Biodiesels have generally been proved to be corrosive, therefore it is important to understand the limits and extents of corrosion on different materials. Methods generally used to find and calculate corrosion have also been discussed in this paper. The reasons for the occurrence of corrosion and the subsequent problems because of corrosion have been presented. Biodiesel... [more]
