Mikołaj Nowak
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computer simulation, electromagnetic absorption, energy harvesting, metamaterial absorbers
This paper presents the comprehensive analysis of the sub-microwave, radio frequency band resonant metastructures’ electromagnetic properties with a particular emphasis on the possibility of their application in energy harvesting systems. Selected structures based on representative topologies of metamaterials have been implemented in the simulation environment. The models have been analyzed and their substitute average electromagnetic parameters (absorption, reflection, transmission and homogenized permeability coefficients) have been determined. On the basis of simulation research, prototypes of electromagnetic field two-dimensional absorbers have been manufactured and verified experimentally in the proposed test system. The absorber has been implemented as a component of the low-cost energy harvesting system with a high-frequency rectifier and a voltage multiplier, obtaining usable DC energy from the electromagnetic field in certain frequency bands. The energy efficiency of the syste... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alcohol-to-jet, alternative fuel, emission, particles, particulate matter
The fine particulate matter (PM) emitted from jet aircraft poses a serious threat to the environment and human health which can be mitigated by using biofuels. This paper aims to quantify PM emissions from a small turbofan fueled with the alcohol to jet (ATJ) synthetic kerosene and its various blends (5%, 20%, and 30% of ATJ) with Jet A-1 fuel. Emissions from a turbofan engine (DGEN 380) with a high bypass ratio, applicable in small private jets, were studied. Among the four fuels tested, the PM-number emission index (EIN) was the lowest for the ATJ 30% blend. EIN for ATJ 30% dropped from 1.1 × 1017 to 4.7 × 1016 particles/kg of fuel. Burning alternative fuel blends reduced the particle mass emissions over the entire range of fuel flow by at least 117 mg/kg of fuel. The particles formed in the nucleation mechanism dominate PM emission, which is characteristic of jet engines. Thus, number-based particle size distributions (PSDs) exhibit a single mode log-normal distribution. The highest... [more]

Grzegorz Wałowski
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: flow resistance, gas, permeability, porous material
The hydrodynamic conditions resulting from the permeability of porous materials are based not only on the assessment of the gas flow through these materials, but also the losses related to the pressure energy in this flow. Flow resistance is a direct measure of this loss. The aim of this experimental research was to evaluate the flow resistance of the porous material in relation to the gas flow. The research was carried out on a material with a slit-porous structure. The tests were carried out on a system for measuring gas permeability under the conditions of gas bubbling through the char. The issue of the total pressure drop process in the porous bed was considered in the Reynolds number category. The coefficient of flow resistance for the char was determined and the value of this coefficient was compared with the gas stream, and an experimental evaluation of the total pressure drop on the porous bed was made. The novelty of this article is the determination of the tortuosity and the... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioLPG, biopropane, butyric acid, Catalysis, hydrothermal decarboxylation, Pt/C
Sustainable fuel-range hydrocarbons can be produced via the catalytic decarboxylation of biomass-derived carboxylic acids without the need for hydrogen addition. In this present study, 5 wt% platinum on carbon (Pt/C) has been found to be an effective catalyst for hydrothermally decarboxylating butyric acid in order to produce mainly propane and carbon dioxide. However, optimisation of the reaction conditions is required to minimise secondary reactions and increase hydrocarbon selectivity towards propane. To do this, reactions using the catalyst with varying parameters such as reaction temperatures, residence times, feedstock loading and bulk catalyst loading were carried out in a batch reactor. The highest yield of propane obtained was 47 wt% (close to the theoretical decarboxylation yield of 50 wt% on butyric acid basis), corresponding to a 96% hydrocarbon selectivity towards propane. The results showed that the optimum parameters to produce the highest yield of propane, from the rang... [more]
Influence of Errors in Known Constants and Boundary Conditions on Solutions of Inverse Heat Conduction Problem
Sun Kyoung Kim
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bias, boundary condition, error, gradient method, inverse heat conduction problem
This work examines the effects of the known boundary conditions on the accuracy of the solution in one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problems. The failures in many applications of these problems are attributed to inaccuracy of the specified constants and boundary conditions. Since the boundary conditions and material properties in most thermal problems are imposed with uncertainty, the effects of their inaccuracy should be understood prior to the inverse analyses. The deviation from the exact solution has been examined for each case according to the errors in material properties, boundary location, and known boundary conditions. The results show that the effects of such errors are dramatic. Based on these results, the applicability and limitations of the inverse heat conduction analyses have been evaluated and discussed.

To design a residential or commercial building with high energy performance that would be economical at the same time, an analysis was performed that relates these two aspects of the problem. The first aspect is focused on evaluation of the thermal performance of a multi-layered wall in order to achieve the lowest energy consumption for heating and cooling. The second aspect of the analysis covered the choice of materials (type, thickness and price) so that the building has the lowest possible construction costs, but the best achieved thermal comfort. The three types of external walls with the same structure were analyzed in this paper. The lowest and highest values of the layer thickness offered by the manufacturer were chosen and their dynamic characteristics for the heat transfer were calculated. The following step was to perform optimization of the objective function, which was defined by the unit price of the material per mass of the material, that is, the economical aspect was pr... [more]

Additive manufacturing of ferromagnetic materials for electrical machine applications is maturing. In this work, a full E-type transformer core is printed, characterized, and compared in terms of performance with a conventional Goss textured core. For facilitating a modular winding and eddy current loss reduction, the 3D printed core is assembled from four novel interlocking components, which structurally imitate the E-type core laminations. Both cores are compared at approximately their respective optimal working conditions, at identical magnetizing currents. Due to the superior magnetic properties of the Goss sheet conventional transformer core, 10% reduced efficiency (from 80.5% to 70.1%) and 34% lower power density (from 59 VA/kg to 39 VA/kg) of the printed transformer are identified at operating temperature. The first prototype transformer core demonstrates the state of the art and initial optimization step for further development of additively manufactured soft ferromagnetic comp... [more]

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the seismic fragility analysis (FA) with the strain-based failure modes for the nuclear metal components retaining pressure boundary. Through this study, it is expected that we can find analytical ways to enhance the high confidence of low probability of failure (HCLPF) capacity potentially contained in the conservative seismic design criteria required for the nuclear metal components. Another goal is to investigate the feasibility of the seismic FA to be used as an alternative seismic design rule for beyond-design-basis earthquakes. To do this, the general procedures of the seismic FA using the inelastic seismic analysis for the nuclear metal components are investigated. Their procedures are described in detail by the exampled calculations for the surge line nozzles connecting hot leg piping and the pressurizer, known as one of the seismic fragile components in NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply System). The main equipment responsible for connection and transmission of electric power from generating centers to consumers are power transformers. This type of equipment is subject to various types of faults that can affect its components, in some cases also compromising its operation and, consequently, the electric power supply. Thus, in this paper, electromagnetic, thermal, and structural analysis of power transformers was carried out with the objective of providing the operator with information on the ideal moment for performing predictive maintenance, avoiding unplanned shutdowns. For this, computational simulations were performed using the finite element method (FEM) and, from that, the different transformer operation ways, nominal currents, inrush current, and short-circuit current were analyzed. In this perspective, analyses of the effects that thermal expansion, axial forces, and radial forces exerted were carried out, contributing to possible defects in this type of equipment. As a... Keywords: head losses, hydropower, plant debris, SHP, trash racks
Deposition of debris on the screens of hydroelectric power plants translates into measurable economic losses. Occurring plant debris, although it is an organic material, is characterised by different forms and structure. It is often leaves, branches, and grasses in lowland areas, while in mountainous regions, broken boughs and trees can be expected. On the trash racks of power plants, debris may be deposited in different forms, shapes, and places. This work aims to determine the impact of the degree of submergence of debris on the values of the force acting on the racks. This paper analyzes the influence of the rectangular shape of the debris deposited on the trash racks and its degree of submergence and weight on the obtained values of the force acting on the racks as a result of water pressure, which directly affects the hydraulic losses and productivity of hydroelectric power plants. Our research confirms the negative influence of the deposited plant debris on the value of forces re... [more]

This paper presents the energy characteristics of wood and wood-based materials in the form of commercially available pellets, furniture board (MDF) and OSB. Toxicometric indices were determined for gaseous destructs arising from thermal decomposition and combustion of the materials studied. The paper proves that combustion conditions are crucial in terms of toxic destructive emissions. It has been shown that the combustion of wood-based materials under controlled conditions can lead to equally low emissions of toxic wastes as the combustion of traditional wood materials. The paper also presents the index of greenhouse gas emission, the so-called CO2 equivalent, for the examined wood and wood-based materials.

Net-zero-energy buildings (ZEBs) that contribute to making annual energy consumption balances zero are effective measures for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the construction sector. As the application of ZEBs progresses, GHG emissions during the construction of buildings and the manufacturing of materials and products (called construction EG) account for a relatively large proportion of overall emissions. This study aimed to clarify construction EG as a means by which to formulate policies for the reduction of emissions in each country. The construction EGs of 43 countries from 2011 were analyzed. The 56-sector input/output table and CO2 emission data of the 2016 World Input/Output Database, published by the EU, were both used in this analysis. It was found that the construction sector accounted for the highest proportion of total CO2 emissions. Moreover, the fraction of construction EG tended to be higher in developing countries such as China and India, while developed cou... [more]

Keywords: compression molding, hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, mechanical durability, pH effect on chemical stability, polypropylene, self-cleaning, superhydrophobic surface, surface morphology
Superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied for their unique interfacial interaction between water and the surface, and they can be used for self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-icing, and other applications. To make the superhydrophobic surfaces, nano/microscale structures and a low surface energy should be realized. The development of a durable superhydrophobic surface was hindered by the vulnerability of the surface to mechanical contact. To improve the robustness of the superhydrophobic surface toward mechanical damage, the hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) surface was coated with a thick layer of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (SNPs) using a simple compression molding process. The thick layer consists of SNPs and PP, and the roles of SNPs and PP are nano/microscale structures with a low surface energy and binder for nanoparticles, respectively. This revealed improvement in the superhydrophobic tendency, with an apparent contact angle of about 170° and a sliding angle of... [more]

A compact hollow-anode discharge (HAD) source with a size of 60 mm in radius and 70 mm in length has been developed to stably generate plasma jets for various sputtering processes in semiconductor and display fabrications. A developed HAD plasma source has been investigated by cylindrical electric probes, and the experimental results were compared to the values of numerical calculations. A uniform density discharge model with a geometry factor was proposed to estimate the profiles of plasma parameters. Owing to the difference of absolute magnitude, even with the similar trend of spatial variation, plasma parameters such as electron temperature (Te) and plasma density (ne) measured at z = 3 cm have been calibrated by the values of numerical calculations at the nozzle entrance (z = 0 cm, at the throat of the jet), and the calibration factors for Te and n0 have been deduced by comparing the experimental values to numerical calculations. These are to be explained by the decay mechanism alo... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: HVDC-LCC, HVDC-VSC, MTDC comparison, system reliability, transmittable capacity of HVDC systems
The purpose of this paper is to highlight that, in order to assess the availability of different HVDC cable transmission systems, a more detailed characterization of the cable management significantly affects the availability estimation since the cable represents one of the most critical elements of such systems. The analyzed case study consists of a multi-terminal direct current system based on both line commutated converter and voltage source converter technologies in different configurations, whose availability is computed for different transmitted power capacities. For these analyses, the matrix-based reliability estimation method is exploited together with the Monte Carlo approach and the Markov state space one. This paper shows how reliability analysis requires a deep knowledge of the real installation conditions. The impact of these conditions on the reliability evaluation and the involved benefits are also presented.

Erosion causes substantial damage in many industrial equipment such as pump components, valves, elbows, and plugged tees. In most cases, erosion is coupled with corrosion, resulting in major financial loss (nearly 3.4% of the global gross domestic product) as evidenced in oil and gas industries. In most cases, the erosion occurs in a submerged water medium. In this paper, erosion characteristics of stainless steel 316 were investigated computationally in a water-submerged jet impingement setup. The erosion profiles and patterns were obtained for various parameters over ranges of inlet velocities (3 to 16 m/s), nozzle diameters (5 to 10 mm), nozzle−target distances (5 to 20 mm), nozzle shapes (circular, elliptical, square, and rectangular), impingement angles (60° to 90°), and particle sizes (50 to 300 µm). The range of Reynolds number studied based on nozzle diameters is 21,000−120,000. The Eulerian−Lagrangian approach was used for flow field prediction and particle tracking considerin... [more]
