Permanent Magnet Selections for AFPM Disc Generators
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: axial flux PM generator, disk generator, permanent magnets, PM machines
In this article, the field (FEM) and analytical analyses were used for the optimal selection of magnets material for the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator (AFPMG), without building the prototype before. The tested generator is an axial flux machine which consists of a single stator and two rotor discs with Permanent Magnets (PM). Three-dimensional (3D) ANSYS Maxwell package was used for magnetostatic and transient field (FEM) simulations. Two types of PM were selected for the analysis: Ceramic (also known as “Ferrite”) magnets made from Strontium Ferrite powder and Neodymium Iron Boron magnets (NdFeB). The authors compared obtained electromotive forces (EMF) and generator powers for selected magnets materials, performed FFT analyses of voltages and currents and indicated the optimal solutions. In addition to the operational properties of the AFPMG, the magnet and manufacturing costs were compared.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cylindrical heat sink, heat management, LED, thermal analysis, transient condition
Light Emitting Diode (LED) applications are increasingly used in various microelectronic devices due to their efficient light generation. The miniaturisation of the LED and its integration into compact devices within the weight limit have resulted in excessive heat generation, and inefficient management of this heat could lead to the failure of the entire system. Passive and/or active heat sinks are used for dissipating heat from the system to the environment to improve performance. An ANSYS design modeller and transient thermal conditions were utilised in this study to design and simulate the LED system. The modeller performs its function by utilising the Finite Element Method (FEM) technique. The LED system considered in this work consists of a chip, thermal interface material, and a cylindrical heat sink. The thickness of the Cylindrical Heat Sink (CHS) fins used in the investigation is between 2 mm and 6 mm, whilst ensuring the mass of heat sinks is not more than 100 g. The input p... [more]

Keywords: C method, excimer laser, grating, silicon, surface microstructure
Silicon, as the most abundant element in the earth’s crust and the most common material used in electronic and optical equipment, has attracted the attention of many individuals to change the properties of this material, improving its electronic and optical properties. One of these efforts relies on the reduction of surface reflection by making use of different methods. However, among them, the use of lasers in creating surface microstructures has been of special importance because there is no need for masks and other additional materials. In this work, a theoretical method is utilized to analyze these textures with the theorem of diffraction grating on a micrometer scale. The surface reflection of the microstructure created by excimer laser exposure on a silicon surface is simulated. The theoretical Coordinate transformation method (C method) gives out notable results against the experimental records by approximating triangular and trapezoidal microstructures. The search for matrices and technological solutions for the reliable immobilization of volatile radionuclides and high-level waste (HLW) components is an actual radiochemical problem. Methods of obtaining of sodium alumino-iron phosphate (NAFP) and iron phosphate (FP) glass composite materials synthesized at temperatures of 450−750 °C, their structure and hydrolytic stability were investigated in this paper. The structure of the samples was studied by XRD and SEM-EDS. It was shown that, in the case of FP materials, the phase composition varies depending on the synthesis temperature, while NAFP materials have a complex multiphase composition at all crystallization temperatures. It has been established that the samples of the obtained glass composite materials have a high hydrolytic stability. At the same time, FP material obtained at 650 °C are the most stable, which makes this medium-temperature method of synthesis promising for the immobilization of volatile HLW components.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: adoption, barriers, decision, Energy Efficiency, historic buildings, implementation
For heritage buildings, energy-efficient retrofitting cannot be applied with the same range of possibilities as with existing buildings. Applying such improvements to heritage buildings can be challenging due to their historic and/or cultural significance and non-standard construction methods. This paper reviews the technical challenges and potential of applying energy efficient retrofit elements in heritage buildings. The retrofitting measures reviewed are draught-proofing, windows, insulation, ventilation, heating, solar photovoltaics and phase change materials. It is possible to significantly reduce energy use in heritage buildings with such retrofits. However, there is no universal way to apply energy-efficient retrofitting in heritage buildings, which is apparent in the literature, where case studies are prevalent.

Functional materials, in the combination of lignocelluloses, known as natural fibers, with oxide materials, can result in cultivating functional properties such as flexibility, relativity good electrical conduction, good electrical charge storage capacity, and tunable electric permittivity. This study presents the morphological, dielectric, and impedance properties of lignocellulose−lead oxide (LC/PbO2) composite sheets electrodeposited with silver metallic nanoparticles for various time spans. The uncoated samples show a rather simple behavior where the impedance data fit well to the two-system model with different relaxation times.
