Stannous Tungstate Semiconductor for Photocatalytic Degradation and Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: A Review
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: degradation, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, stannous tungstate, water splitting
The use of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis is expected to achieve the efficient utilization of solar energy to alleviate and even solve the problems of energy depletion and environmental pfollution. At present, stannous tungstate materials have attracted extensive attention in the fields of photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis as favorable candidates for such utilization because of their narrow band gap energy (which is ~1.7 eV for the α phase and ~2.7 eV for the β phase, respectively) and unique band structure (which covers the oxidation and reduction potential of water). However, their practical application is still limited by excessive electron−hole recombination and poor stability. In this review, basic information (crystal and electronic structures) related to photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis is presented. Additionally, various strategies to enhance the photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties of stannous tungstate materials, such as morphological mo... [more]

Wide Band Gap Devices and Their Application in Power Electronics
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Storage, gallium nitride, power electronics, silicon carbide, wide bandgap
Power electronic systems have a great impact on modern society. Their applications target a more sustainable future by minimizing the negative impacts of industrialization on the environment, such as global warming effects and greenhouse gas emission. Power devices based on wide band gap (WBG) material have the potential to deliver a paradigm shift in regard to energy efficiency and working with respect to the devices based on mature silicon (Si). Gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) have been treated as one of the most promising WBG materials that allow the performance limits of matured Si switching devices to be significantly exceeded. WBG-based power devices enable fast switching with lower power losses at higher switching frequency and hence, allow the development of high power density and high efficiency power converters. This paper reviews popular SiC and GaN power devices, discusses the associated merits and challenges, and finally their applications in power electron... [more]

Review on the Experimental Characterization of Fracture in Active Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: battery damage, damage mechanisms, experimental mechanics, fracture mechanics, lithium-ion batteries
Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries are one of the most widespread energy storage systems, being extensively employed in a large variety of applications. A significant effort has been made to develop advanced materials and manufacturing processes with the aim of increasing batteries performance and preserving nominal properties with cycling. Nevertheless, mechanical degradation is still a significant damaging mechanism and the main cause of capacity fade and power loss. Lithium ions are inserted and extracted into the lattice structure of active materials during battery operation, causing the deformation of the crystalline lattice itself. Strain mismatches within the different areas of the active material caused by the inhomogeneous lithium-ions concentration induce mechanical stresses, leading ultimately to fracture, fatigue issues, and performance decay. Therefore, a deep understanding of the fracture mechanics in active materials is needed to meet the rapidly growing demand for next-gen... [more]

Production, Activation and CO2 Uptake Capacity of a Carbonaceous Microporous Material from Palm Oil Residues
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, biochar, chemical and physical activation, CO2 uptake, palm oil waste
While Malaysia produces about half of the world’s palm oil and is the largest producer and exporter worldwide, oil palm industries generate large amounts of lignocellulosic biomass waste as a sub-product with no economic market value other than feedstock for energy valorisation. With the aim to increase the sustainability of the sector, in this work we prepare new materials for CO2 capture from palm oil residues (empty fruit bunches and kernels). The biochar is obtained through the carbonisation of the residues and is physically and chemically activated to produce porous materials. The resulting microporous samples have similar properties to other commercial activated carbons, with BET surfaces in the 320−880 m2/g range and pore volumes of 0.1−0.3 cm3·g−1. The CO2 uptake at room temperature for physically activated biochar (AC) was 2.4−3.6 mmolCO2/gAC, whereas the average CO2 uptake for chemically activated biochar was 3.36−3.80 mmolCO2/gAC. The amount of CO2 adsorbed decreased at the... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: multirod, Nd:YAG, solar concentration, solar laser, tracking error compensation capacity
A seven-rod solar laser head was conceptualized and numerically studied to improve the tracking error compensation capacity and power stability in end-side-pumping schemes. It was composed of a first-stage heliostat−parabolic mirror system, a second-stage fused silica aspheric lens and a third-stage conical pumping cavity, within which seven Nd:YAG rods were mounted. Highly stable solar laser emission, with a power loss inferior to 5% for tracking errors up to ±0.4°, could potentially be enabled with seven 4 mm diameter, 13 mm length rods. The tracking error width at 10% laser power loss was about 1.0°, which is 1.65 times higher than the experimental record, attained by a dual-rod side-pumping prototype. Furthermore, a total multimode laser power of about 41.2 W could also be achieved, corresponding to 23.3 W/m2 collection and 2.5% solar-to-laser power conversion efficiencies, which are 1.65 and 1.36 times higher than those obtained with the dual-rod side-pumping prototype. Subject: Materials
Keywords: autoradiography, high-temperature metamorphism, nuclear fallout, nuclear melt glass, Semipalatinsk test site, zircon decomposition
Investigation of shocked materials provides unique information about behavior of substances in extreme thermodynamic conditions. Near surface nuclear tests have induced multiple transformations of affected soils. Examination of nuclear glasses and relics of entrapped minerals provides a unique database on their behavior under an intense temperature flash. In this work, several types of nuclear fallout particles from historic tests at the Semipalatinsk test site are investigated using complementary analytical methods. Distribution of radionuclides in all types of samples is highly heterogeneous; domains with high content of radionuclides are often intermixed with non-active materials. There is no general correlation between chemical composition of the glassy matrix and content of radionuclides. In aerodynamic fallout, the main fraction of radionuclides is trapped in the outer glassy shell. Relics of quartz grains are always devoid of radionuclides, while glass regions of high activity h... Keywords: crystallinity changes, deconvolution, delignification, feature correlation method, wood waste
A commercial three-layer particleboard served as model furniture for testing pretreatment with the oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm.) over 9-, 12-, 16-, and 20-week periods based on the effects of reducing the enzymatic resistance of component cellulose. The effects of pretreatment were assessed based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of the treated particleboards, wherein indexes (peaks and peak ratios) connected with parameters influencing enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis were analysed. The data were analysed in two ways: the measurement of peak heights in both primary spectra and deconvoluted spectra. The peak heights for the determination of the total crystallinity index (TCI) were measured according to narrow and broad baselines. Time and how indexes are calculated were found to be the main factors significantly influencing the values of indexes of pretreatment in most cases. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
This review deals with the simulation and optimization of the dry- and wet-torrefaction processes of lignocellulosic biomass. The torrefaction pretreatment regards the production of enhanced biofuels and other materials. Dry torrefaction is a mild pyrolytic treatment method under an oxidative or non-oxidative atmosphere and can improve lignocellulosic biomass solid residue heating properties by reducing its oxygen content. Wet torrefaction usually uses pure water in an autoclave and is also known as hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal torrefaction, hot water extraction, autohydrolysis, hydrothermolysis, hot compressed water treatment, water hydrolysis, aqueous fractionation, aqueous liquefaction or solvolysis/aquasolv, or pressure cooking. In the case of treatment with acid aquatic solutions, wet torrefaction is called acid-catalyzed wet torrefaction. Wet torrefaction produces fermentable monosaccharides and oligosaccharides as well as solid residue with enhanced higher heating va... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: combustion, fly ash, immobilization, leaching, recovery
Fly ash generated in the process of combustion of municipal waste is classified as hazardous waste. Its management today has become a significant problem. One of the methods of safe management of such ash may be using it for the production of concrete as a partial replacement for cement. Using immobilization, the number of hazardous compounds could be limited so that the obtained new material would be safe for the natural environment. Recovery of byproducts—in this case, fly ash—complies with the business models applied in the production cycle in the circular economy model. Such a solution may result in saving energy, limiting CO2 emissions, reducing the use of natural resources, and management of dangerous waste. It should be added that concretes with the addition of hazardous waste would be used for industrial purposes according to the binding legal regulations. Review on Research Progress of Hydraulic Powered Soft Actuators
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: control strategy, hydraulic drive, hysteretic nonlinearity, smart material, soft actuator
Soft actuators have received extensive attention in robotics and smart device applications due to their distinctive dexterity and compliance. Among them, hydraulic soft actuators play an important role in the area because they have much higher specific power and power density than other types such as pneumatic soft actuators. Nevertheless, the deformation of flexible materials in soft actuators brings about inherent hysteresis and nonlinearity, which severely hinders them from producing the desired movement in the presence of advanced control strategies. In this paper, previous research efforts made to enhance the driving capability and actuation efficiency of hydraulic soft actuators are illustrated and analyzed from the three aspects of architecture, materials, and control strategy. Meanwhile, the issues and challenges that have emerged when developing hydraulic soft actuators are discussed. Finally, the potential future development of hydraulic powered soft actuators is discussed.

Recent Advancements in Evacuated Tube Solar Water Heaters: A Critical Review of the Integration of Phase Change Materials and Nanofluids with ETCs
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Storage, evacuated tube collector, nanofluid, PCM, solar radiation
Evacuated tube solar water heaters are gaining more attention in the present market scenario as compared to conventional collectors. Such collectors are versatile because no solar tracking is required and the operating temperature range is also broad. Comparatively, it is cost-effective and may attain higher thermal efficiency. However, like other collectors, continuous energy supply is sometimes hampered by the intermittent nature of solar radiation. This problem can be partially resolved by using phase change materials (PCM) in the evacuated tube solar collector (ETC). PCMs can store the energy during the sunshine hours, which can be released when solar energy is not available. In the literature, several studies are available pertaining to the use of PCMs in ETC-based solar water heaters. The literature indicates that the integration of PCMs with ETCs has several merits. Subject: Materials
Keywords: high efficiency, high torque density, rotor segment, switched reluctance motor
With the rapid development of power electronic techniques and the increasing cost of permanent magnets (PMs) materials, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have recently gained more attention. However, traditional SRMs have a relatively low torque density. For the sake of increasing the motor torque density, this paper proposes a novel segmental rotor type SRM.
