Analysis of Pyrolysis Kinetic Parameters Based on Various Mathematical Models for More than Twenty Different Biomasses: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: kinetic models, kinetics of thermal processes, pyrolysis, TGA-DTG, thermodynamic analysis
Today, energy use is an important and urgent issue for economic development worldwide. It is expected that raw material in the form of biomass and lignocellulosic residues will become increasingly significant sources of sustainable energy in the future because they contain components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractables with high energy-producing potential. It is then essential to determine the behavior of these materials during thermal degradation processes, such as pyrolysis (total or partial absence of air/oxygen). Pyrolyzed biomass and its residual fractions can be processed to produce important chemical products, such as hydrogen gas (H2). Thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis and its derivative, DTG, are analytical techniques used to determine weight loss as a function of temperature or time and associate changes with certain degradation and mass conversion processes in order to evaluate kinetic properties. Applying kinetic methods (mathematical models) to degrad... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-materials, biorefineries, chemicals with added value, lignin, market value, modifications, renewable resources
Lignin is the second most abundant biopolymer in the world. Due to its complex structure, lignin can be considered a valuable source of energy and different chemicals. In addition, using different reactive sites on lignin, it is possible to prepare different value-added products, such as resins, polyurethanes, and many more. Different functional groups are presented on the lignin macromolecule and can be modified via different pathways. Hydroxyl groups are the most promising reactive sites for lignin modifications. Both modified and unmodified lignins could be used for preparing different biomaterials. This paper shows several possible applications of lignin. The main goal of this publication is to show the possible valorization of lignin in different value-added products throughout the actual market prices of non-biobased materials. This review proves that lignin has unquestionable advantages in material technology and can replace different substances which will lead to a higher poten... [more]

Forces and Stresses in the Windings of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fault current limiter, short-circuit, superconducting tape
This paper presents the design of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) and calculation results of forces and stresses in the windings of a resistive fault current limiter. The design of the fault current limiter consists of two parallelly connected and magnetically coupled windings, cooled by a single stage cryocooler. Magnetically compensated windings made of HTS tape give a very low voltage on the limiter at a nominal current. Limitation of the short-circuit time and the value of the maximum initial fault current reduces the thermal and dynamic effects of the passage of a fault current. Using devices which limit the value of a fault current can lower the level of required short-circuit capacity of the elements in a system. However, selected means of fault currents limitation must maintain the power quality standards. A perfect fault current limiter is required to have substantial impedance in fault conditions and zero impedance at work currents. Such requirements are met by... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: climate change, ENVI-met, heat losses and gains, human thermal comfort thermal properties of materials, public space
Noticeable climate change in recent years is reducing the comfort of public spaces in the urban environment, and is becoming an element of urban policies. The adaptation to climate change requires the development of new design guidelines for the development of public spaces. The appropriate definition of development density, choice of building materials, technologies, planting species, and the used directions is a challenge that depends on local conditions. A representative public space located in the area of a multi-family housing estate built in the second half of the 20th century in Lublin (Poland) was selected for the study. The space has undergone redevelopment twice in the last 10 years. The aim of the study was to determine to what extent the executed and designed changes actually improve the thermal comfort of users. Quantitative and qualitative indicators of the successive phases of the investment were analyzed in the context of projected climate change. The simulation was dev... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: digestate, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, post-processing water, sewage sludge, thermal analysis
Hydrochars (HTCD) derived from digestates, namely D1 and D2 (from two plants) of sewage sludge, were examined with respect to their fuel properties. The hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) tests were performed at temperatures of 200 and 220 °C, for 2 and 4 h of residence times, and with 1:10 and 1:8 digestate to water ratios (D/W), causing an increase of ash content (max. 55.8%), and a decrease c.a. 20% of the higher heating value except for a slight increase to 15 kJ/kg at 200 °C and 4 h in hydrochars. Conversely, the combustion profiles of hydrochars moved towards higher temperatures (225−257 °C) and finished earlier at lower temperatures (423−438 °C). The HTCD from D1 and D2 showed very similar properties under the same conditions (200 °C, 4 h, 1:8 D/W) for combustion characteristic temperatures, indices and profiles. The best efficiency was found for HTCD2. In addition, the polluted post-processing liquid phase was treated by a distillation process providing 30% higher pH, 50% lower B... [more]

Design of Battery Thermal Management System with Considering the Longitudinal and Transverse Temperature Difference
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: BTMS, composite channel, phase change material, temperature uniformity, wavy channel
For a bottom-liquid-cooled battery thermal management system (BTMS), the small contact area between the battery bottom and the cold plate leads to a large temperature difference in the battery height direction. In addition, the increase in coolant temperature from the inlet to the outlet results in an excessive temperature difference in the battery module in the coolant flow direction. In order to solve the above issues, a wavy channel was first designed to strengthen the heat exchange between the battery bottom and the cold plate. The maximum battery module temperature for the wavy-channel design is 29.61 °C, which is a reduction of 1.75 °C compared to the straight-channel design. Then, the transverse temperature difference in the battery module was reduced by introducing a composite-channel design. Finally, on the basis of the composite channel, phase change material (PCM) was added to the battery’s top surface to reduce the temperature difference in the battery height direction. The... [more]

Possibilities of Using Zeolites Synthesized from Fly Ash in Adsorption Chillers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorption chiller, fly ash, specific surface area, water adsorption, XRD, Zeolite
Adsorption chillers produce cold energy, using heat instead of electricity, thus reducing electrical energy consumption. A major industrial waste, fly ash, can be converted to zeolite and used in adsorption chillers as an adsorbent. In this research, three different types of zeolites were synthesised from fly ash via a hydrothermal reaction in an alkaline solution (NaOH). The obtained samples (Na-A zeolites) were modified with K2CO3 to increase the water adsorption capacity of these samples. Phase and morphology analyses shows that desired zeolites formed properly but other crystalline phases also exist along with nonporous amorphous phases. The determined specific surface areas for Na-A zeolite (12 h) and Na-A zeolite (24 h) are 45 m2/g and 185 m2/g respectively, while the specific surface area for synthesized 13X zeolite is almost negligible. Water-isotherm for each of these samples was measured. Considering the application of adsorption chillers, average adsorption capacity was very... [more]

Salt Deposits and Brine Blowout: Development of a Cross-Linking Composition for Blocking Formations and Methodology for Its Testing
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: blowout, cross-linked polymers, drilling wells, elimination of complications, formation isolation, polymer systems, polysalt aggression
Uncontrolled inflow of formation fluid (brine) into a well adversely affects the cation−anion bonds in solutions and leads to their dissociation and loss of aggregative stability. Blow-out significantly complicates the drilling process and leads to an increase in non-productive time and in financial costs for problem solving. It is necessary to create a blocking screen that allows separation of the layer from the well and prevents brine flow. This article is devoted to the development of polymeric-blocking compositions that work due to the crystallization reaction of divalent salts of calcium and magnesium chlorides. More than 14 components were detected in the formation fluid on the atomic emission spectrometer. Based on the study of the compatibility of components with brine and the study of rheology and filtration processes through a real core under HPHT conditions, the optimal component polymer composition was selected. The reason for the increase in the rheology of composition dur... [more]

Solar Hydrogen Fuel Generation from Wastewater—Beyond Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: A Perspective
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomass reforming, dual-functional photocatalysis, hydrogen generation, photoelectrocatalysis, wastewater treatment
Green hydrogen—a carbon-free renewable fuel—has the capability to decarbonise a variety of sectors. The generation of green hydrogen is currently restricted to water electrolysers. The use of freshwater resources and critical raw materials, however, limits their use. Alternative water splitting methods for green hydrogen generation via photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) have been explored in the past few decades; however, their commercial potential still remains unexploited due to the high hydrogen generation costs. Novel PEC-based simultaneous generation of green hydrogen and wastewater treatment/high-value product production is therefore seen as an alternative to conventional water splitting. Interestingly, the organic/inorganic pollutants in wastewater and biomass favourably act as electron donors and facilitate the dual-functional process of recovering green hydrogen while oxidising the organic matter. The generation of green hydrogen through the dual-functional PEC pro... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: melting process, PCM, temperature distribution, visualization experiment
Solar energy coupling with energy storage is a popular technology in the energy field. How to achieve the high-efficiency application of solar energy is very important. Energy storage technology is the key issue in this aspect. Latent heat storage is a more efficient energy storage. In this paper, a visualization experimental platform of a latent heat storage system has been designed, and some performance data have been obtained. Hot water has been used as the heat transfer fluid, and paraffin wax has been used as the phase change material. The inclination angle of the tank is varied from the horizontal direction (0°) to the vertical direction (90°) by a step of 30°. The melting performance has been studied for three cases with inlet water temperature of 356 K, 361 K, and 366 K. The result shows that the inclination angle of the tank has a great influence on the melting process of the phase change material, and the temperature distribution of the material is obviously different. Subject: Materials
Keywords: constant heating-temperature method (CHTM), ground source heat pump systems (GSHPs), hydrogeological settings, the center North China Plain (NCP), thermal conductivity, thermal response test (TRT)
The central North China Plain (NCP) is one of the rapidly developing regions in China which has a great potential for ground source heat pump (GSHP) system applications. However, the ground thermal property, which is a prerequisite for GSHP system design, has been insufficiently investigated. In this paper, the ground thermal conditions including ground temperature and thermal conductivity are characterized in three representative hydrogeological regions in the NCP area: the piedmont alluvial plain, the central alluvial plain, and the coastal plain. Results show that the geothermal gradient below 40 m in depth in this area ranges from 0.018 °C/m to 0.029 °C/m. Although the thermal conductivity measured by soil samples differs slightly among the three regions, parameters in the piedmont plain have a larger variability than in the central and coastal plain due to the significant heterogeneity of the lithology. Subject: Materials
Keywords: complexation, humic acids, rare earth elements, temperature
In deep underground environments, temperature is one of the key factors affecting the geochemistry behaviors of rare earth elements (REE) in organic-rich fluid. However, the influence of temperature on the interaction between humic acids (HA) and REE is not well known. In the present study, the influence of temperature on the HA−REE-binding behavior was evaluated based on heating experiments of REE-doped HA solution. Lignite-extracted HA and REE-binding experiments were conducted over a temperature range of 20 to 200 °C to quantify HA−REE complexation and the influence of temperature on HA binding sites. Results showed that increasing temperature and decreasing [REE]/[HA] ratio cause an increase of Kd value (the partition coefficient of REE between HA and aqueous solution). During heating KdREE KdREE patterns gradually change from middle REE-enriched-type (M-type) at 20 °C to light and middle REE-enriched-type (L-M-type) at 50 and 100 °C, and to light REE-enriched-type (L-type) at... The cement sheath is an annular structure between casing and formation, which is crucial to the integrity of the wellbore system. Considering that the temperature and pressure environment is changing continuously with increasing burial depth, the micro-structure and macro=mechanical properties of the in-situ cement sheath will change accordingly. To investigate the variation of burial depth on the evolution of the tensile mechanical behavior of oil cement stone, five temperature-pressure curing and testing conditions (25 °C—0 MPa, 50 °C—10 MPa, 80 °C—20 MPa, 110 °C—30 MPa, and 140 °C—40 MPa) are set to approximately simulate an in situ temperature-pressure environment at five typical burial depths (0 m, 1000 m, 2000 m, 3000 m, and 4000 m). The in situ tensile behavior, micro-structure and pore size distribution of the cement stones at each condition are tested and comparatively analyzed. Subject: Materials
Keywords: angular characterization, angular index, center of angle, cutset angle, IEEE 39-bus system, load flow, PMU, power-system stability, synchrophasor, voltage stability
This paper presents a novel methodology for the calculation of angular indexes of an electrical system from stationary analysis, using load flow and nose curves (P−V) in each of the buses of the system to perform control actions and preserve or improve voltage stability. The control actions are proposed considering a novel method based on the concepts of the cutset angle (CA) and center of angle (COA). The target is a fast estimation of voltage-stability margins through an appropriate angular characterization of the whole system and for each load bus with a complete network and N-1 contingency criteria. The most significant enhancement is that the angular characterization is based on the COA, which is related to the angular dynamics of the system, and indirectly reflects the inertia and the respective angles of the generator rotor, as well as the impact on the angular equivalent-system model. Simulations showed that the COA is an important index to determine the location of occurrence... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: DDTG, isoconversional, kinetics, lignocellulose, pyrolysis, reaction network
Wheat straw is a renewable agricultural by-product that is currently underutilized in the production of bioenergy and bioproducts due to its high ash content, as well as high transport costs due to its low volumetric energy density. The thermogravimetric analysis of this material produces derivative curves with a single broad peak, making it difficult to identify the three conventional pseudo-components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), which is resolved using the second derivative to determine inflection points. Model-fitting methods and isoconversional methods were applied to determine the degradation kinetics of wheat straw at two different particle sizes, as well as that of a reference feedstock (beech wood), and the obtained values were used to divide the degradation curves to be compared to the experimental data. Seven different pyrolysis reaction networks from the literature were given a similar treatment to determine which provides the best estimation of the actual pyroly... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: char, model compounds, nitrogen migration and transformation, thermal conversion, urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive, wood
In thermal conversion utilization, nitrogen-rich biomass such as waste wood-based panels will release a large amount of NO into the atmosphere, causing serious harm to the surroundings. By means of co-pyrolysis, N in waste wood-based panels can be fixed in chars instead of discharging into the atmosphere in the form of volatile matter, which can reduce NO emission and lay a foundation for the preparation of nitrogen-rich carbon materials with high added value. As the most commonly used adhesive in the production of wood-based panels, urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive (UF) is the main nitrogen source in waste wood-based panels. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of glucose, ethyl maltol and 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone (DMHF) on nitrogen migration and conversion during UF pyrolysis by adjusting the different proportions of model compounds and UF.
