Subject: Materials
Keywords: photovoltaics, polymer material, stability, transmittance, ultraviolet test
The need for innovative design and materials is increasing for various types of photovoltaic (PV) installations in building integrated PV, agricultural, and floating systems. It is crucial to reduce the weight of the PV module to maximize its use in such applications. For this purpose, the front surface must be made of a polymer-based material instead of tempered glass. This study focuses on the analysis of the optical and ultraviolet (UV) reliability properties of various lightweight polymer front sheets. The results show that the transmittance and UV properties of the front material are good. Moreover, a PV module with a polymer front sheet rather than glass was constructed, and a characteristic investigation as well as UV reliability test were performed. The transmittance of the polycarbonate (PC) front sheet decreased by only <3% and the module fabricated with PC exhibited only an approximately 6% power drop after the UV reliability test; hence, the PC is suitable for use in the... Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy harvesting, motion bifurcation, nonlinear dynamics, power flow
Vibration energy harvesting technology can capture ambient energy forms. Using an energy harvesting shock absorber (EHSA) is one of the methods to achieve this function. The EHSA with mechanical motion rectifier (MMR) has motion bifurcation, which can improve energy harvesting performance and reduce the impact between gears. However, the motion bifurcation makes it difficult to quantitatively predict the vibrational energy dissipation and energy harvesting of the MMR−EHSA. Evaluating the performance of an MMR−EHSA during the design phase becomes highly complex. In this paper, a novel nonlinear dynamics model of MMR−EHSAs is established to solve motion bifurcation and quantitative power flow. Furthermore, the proposed MMR−EHSA prototype is fabricated, and dynamics testing is initiated to verify the theoretical model under harmonic vibration. The testing results show that the theoretical model can predict the working characterization of MMR−EHSAs. The resistance of optimal harvesting ene... [more]

Phase change slurries (PCSs) have great potential as both a heat transfer fluid and an energy storage medium for cooling processes, cold energy storage, and cold energy transportation due to desirable thermophysical properties. One of the major benefits of PCSs compared to pure phase change materials is their fluidity, thus making them cooled or heated by a heat exchanger, pumped through pipes, discharged, and stored directly in a thermal energy storage tank. The use of encapsulated phase change slurries and gas hydrate slurry has thus attracted considerable interest as reflected in the literature with a rising number of publications and institutions involved in the area. The use of bibliometric techniques has found a recent interest in the literature to define the progress of different scientific topics and inspire researchers to identify novelties. In this paper, bibliometric analysis and a detailed systematic review are carried out to show the state-of-the-art development of PCSs fo... [more]

To date, the world has accumulated a large amount of long-lived radioactive materials that need to be disposed of or reprocessed. Such materials include nuclear legacy objects containing 226Ra, which is an important material for obtaining a wide range of isotopes for nuclear medicine via irradiation in reactors, cyclotrons, and electron accelerators. For the selective recovery of 226Ra from waste materials, crown-ether (CE) 18-crown-6 (18C6) or its derivatives can be used, which, however, have not been widely studied for these purposes. In our work, the key property of 18C6 and its derivatives, the phase distribution, was studied using tritium labeling. The possibility of introducing a tritium label into CEs molecules using thermal activation of tritium has been demonstrated; a high specific activity of the obtained compounds was achieved (from 18 to 108 TBq/mol). Methods for chromatographic purification of the studied CEs were developed. The distribution of 18C6 and its derivatives be... [more]

Amorphous metal (AM), specifically amorphous ferromagnetic metal, is considered as a satisfactory magnetic material for exploring electromagnetic devices with high-efficiency and high-power density, such as electrical machines and transformers, benefits from its various advantages, such as reasonably low power loss and very high permeability in medium to high frequency. However, the characteristics of these materials have not been investigated comprehensively, which limits its application prospects to good-performance electrical machines that have the magnetic flux density with generally rotational and non-sinusoidal features. The appropriate characterization of AMs under different magnetizations is among the fundamentals for utilizing these materials in electrical machines. This paper aims to extensively overview AM property measurement techniques in the presence of various magnetization patterns, particularly rotational magnetizations, and AM property modeling methods for advanced el... Keywords: BT-based solid solutions, morphotropic phase boundary, piezoelectric property
In this study, a series of solid solutions of (1−x)BaTiO3-xCa(Sn1/2Zr1/2)O3 (abbreviated as (1−x)BT-xCSZ, x = 0.00−0.15) ceramics have been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method to search for high performance lead-free piezoelectric materials. The structural evolution, microstructure, and piezoelectric properties are investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the phase symmetry strongly depends on the CSZ content. A tetragonal phase is well-maintained in the compositions of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.03, and coexistence of tetragonal and cubic phases is obtained in the range of x = 0.06−0.09, beyond which a pure cubic phase becomes stable. More importantly, a significantly enhanced piezoelectric coefficient of d33 = 388 ± 9 pC/N is attained in the composition of x = 0.06 in the MPB region, where a tetragonal ferroelectric phase and an ergodic relaxor phase with average cubic symmetry coexist. Based on the analysis of crystal structure and dielectric properties, a tem... [more]

252 literature sources and about 5000 crude oil assays were reviewed in this work. The review has shown that the petroleum characterization can be classified in three categories: crude oil assay; SARA characterization; and molecular characterization. It was found that the range of petroleum property variation is so wide that the same crude oil property cannot be measured by the use of a single standard method. To the best of our knowledge for the first time the application of the additive rule to predict crude oil asphaltene content from that of the vacuum residue multiplied by the vacuum residue TBP yield was examined. It was also discovered that a strong linear relation between the contents of C5-, and C7-asphaltenes in crude oil and derived thereof vacuum residue fraction exists. The six parameter Weibull extreme function showed to best fit the TBP data of all crude oil types, allowing construction of a correct TBP curve and detection of measurement errors. A new SARA reconstitution... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: forced convective heat transfer, horizontal tube, nanofluids, thermophysical properties
Theoretical analysis of the influence of nanoparticles and temperature on the average Nusselt (Nu) number and the average heat transfer coefficient (HTC) during the turbulent flow of nanofluid in a horizontal, round tube was carried out. The Nu number is a function of the Reynolds (Re) number and the Prandtl (Pr) number, which in turn are functions of the thermophysical properties of the liquid and the flow conditions. On the other hand, the thermophysical properties of nanoliquids are primarily a function of nanoparticle concentration (NPC) and temperature. Hence, the correct determination of the value of the Nu number, and then the HTC, which is needed for engineering calculations, depends on the accuracy of determining the thermophysical properties of nanofluids. In most cases, the thermophysical properties of the nanofluids are calculated as functions of the corresponding thermophysical properties of the base liquid. Therefore, the accuracy of the calculations of the thermophysical... [more]

For CsPbBr3 perovskite materials, it is especially important to reduce interface defects, suppress non-radiative recombination, and improve morphology to achieve highly efficient and stable CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we reported a facile but highly efficient approach in additive engineering for improving the efficiency and stability of CsPbBr3 PSCs. It was found that phenethylammonium iodide can passivate interface defects, suppress non-radiative recombination, and increase the grain sizes of CsPbBr3 films by optimizing crystal quality and interface contact. As a result, a carbon-based CsPbBr3 PSC with power conversion efficiency > 8.51%, storage stability > 340 days, and excellent harsh stability under high temperature and humidity, has been achieved.

In order to meet the flexibility operation needs of coal-fired units under the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutralization, it is imperative for circulating fluidized bed (CFB) units to participate in deep peak regulation. By systematically summarizing deep peak regulation operation practice of existing SC and subcritical-parameter-levels CFB units, the feasibility of deep peak regulation technology of an ultra-supercritical (USC) CFB unit under development and being built is analyzed and demonstrated; meanwhile, the deep peak regulation capacity of the boiler is also predicted. The results show that by analyzing the structural characteristics and design performance of the USC-CFB boiler, for technical problems such as stable combustion under low load, hydrodynamic safety, denitration performance under wide load, and rapid boiler load change rate existing in deep peak regulation, technical measures were implemented by selecting advanced boiler furnace type, adopting good design techn... Keywords: air intake fire, hot oil, industry fire, polyester air filter, pterygota, self-heating
In September 2020, a fire at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the Arctic areas of Norway received national attention. In an unengaged air intake, the heat exchanger designed to prevent ice damage during production mode, was supplied hot oil at 260 °C. In sunny weather, calm conditions, and 14 °C ambient temperature, overheating of the unengaged air intake filters (85% glass fiber and 15% polyester) was identified as a possible cause of ignition. Laboratory heating tests showed that the filter materials could, due to the rigid glass fibers carrying the polymers, glow like smoldering materials. Thus, self-heating as observed for cellulose-based materials was a possible ignition mechanism. Small-scale testing (10 cm × 10 cm and 8 cm stacked height) revealed that used filters with collected biomass, i.e., mainly pterygota, tended to self-heat at 20 °C lower temperatures than virgin filters. Used filter cassettes (60 cm by 60 cm and 50 cm bag depth) caused significant self-heating at... [more]

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its stable reversibility, high-rate cyclability, and high operational potential. On the other hand, it suffers from poor electronic conductivity and low capacitance. To overcome these disadvantages, modification of the LTO surface is frequently undertaken. Considering this idea, the production of a biomass-derived carbon-coated LTO material (LTO/C) and its application as an anode in LIBs is described in this work. The carbon precursor was obtained from commercial carrot juice, which was degraded using microwaves. According to the UV studies, the carbon precursor revealed similar properties to carbon quantum dots. Then, it was deposited on LTO synthetized through a sol-gel method. The LTO/C electrode exhibited a high specific capacity of 211 mAhg−1 at 0.1 C. Capacity retention equal to 53% of the initial value was found for the charge−discharge rate increase from 0.1 C to 20 C. The excellent electroche... [more]

Appropriate measures have been taken to reduce energy requirements for cold chain applications. Thermal energy storage is an accepted method to reduce the need for electrical energy after harvesting fresh horticultural produce. The use of phase change materials (PCM) in postharvest storage, outside of a temperature-controlled environment, extends shelf life and keeps food at the ideal temperature. This review focuses on the various trials using PCM to improve cold chain effectiveness. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each type of storage using different PCM, as well as the likely and potentially promising applications of thermal energy storage in the cold chain.

Keywords: child droplets, composite droplets, critical conditions, emulsions, evaporation, heating, micro-explosion, puffing
Adding water to fuel droplets is known to lead to puffing and micro-explosion. Puffing and micro-explosion lead to a rapid increase in the liquid fuel surface area. This, in turn, leads to an increase in the fuel evaporation rate and the formation of a homogeneous fuel vapor/air mixture. The latter is important for improving the efficiency of combustion technologies, including those used in internal combustion engines. The effects produced by puffing and micro-explosion lead to a reduction in fuel consumption, improved fuel/air mixing, and a reduction in harmful emissions. The contributions of puffing and micro-explosion to fire extinguishing have also been discussed in many papers. In this paper, we review the state of the art in the investigation of composite droplet micro-explosion and discuss the sufficient conditions for the start of puffing/micro-explosion as well as child droplet characteristics.

Domestic refrigeration and freezing appliances can be used for electrical load shifting from peak to off-peak demand periods, thus allowing greater penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and significantly contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The full realization of this potential can be achieved with the synergistic combination of smart grid (SG) technologies and the application of phase-change materials (PCMs). Being permanently online, these ubiquitous appliances are available for the most advanced strategies of demand-side load management (DSLM), including real-time demand response (DR) and direct load control (DLC). PCMs are a very cost-effective means of significantly augmenting their cold storage capacity and, hence, their load-shifting capabilities. Yet, currently, refrigerators and freezers equipped with PCMs for DSLM are still absent in the market and research works focusing on the synergy of these technologies are still scarce. Keywords: biochar, biochar concrete composites, carbon sequestering, cement, economical, supplementary cementitious materials
In recent years, concrete has been accessible and economical in the construction industry, resulting in high demand for its components. Cement is known for its negative impact on the environment, which has led researchers to investigate alternative supplementary materials. Recently, biochar has been proposed as a replacement to cement in small amounts, with an optimum amount of 0.08−5, resulting in increased strength and enhancement of other properties of concrete composites. The biochar production process and its components are more economical and environmentally friendly than that of cement. In this review, we focus on research highlighting the properties of biochar that aid in the enhancement of biochar mortar and concrete composite properties. We explore properties of biochar such as water absorption, as well as compressive, flexural and tensile strength. Progress has been made in research on biochar concrete composites; however, additional investigations are required with respect... [more]

Riserless Mud Recovery (RMR) technology, as an emerging and efficient drilling method, is advantageous to reduce the shallow flow hazards and the number of casings. The wave current effect is one of the reasons limiting the application of RMR technology in deep and ultra-deep water, and fewer quantitative and qualitative analyses of the effect of the current are made on the stability of conductors. This paper investigates the influence of the overturning moment generated by the continuous subsea internal wave flow and the soil resistance to the conductor. The numerical simulation software ABAQUS is used to study the effects of sea state recurrence period, seabed soil properties, conductor material, driving depth in the mud, and conductor wellhead height on the stability of the conductor, and the influence weights of the factors affecting the stability of the conductor are analyzed using the weight analysis algorithm of extreme learning machine-mean impact value (ELM-MIV). Keywords: gas hydrate reservoir, high-resolution, scattering integral theory, wave-equation-based inversion
The high-resolution seismic characterization of gas hydrate reservoirs plays an important role in the detection and exploration of gas hydrate. The conventional AVO (amplitude variation with offset) method is based on a linearized Zoeppritz equation and utilizes only the reflected wave for inversion. This reduces the accuracy and resolution of the inversion properties and results in incorrect reservoir interpretation. We have studied a high-resolution wave-equation-based inversion method for gas hydrate reservoirs. The inversion depends on the scattering integral wave equation that describes a nonlinear relationship between the seismic wavefield and the elastic properties of the subsurface medium. In addition to the reflected wave, it considers more wavefields including the multiple scattering and transmission during inversion to improve the subsurface illumination, so as to enhance the accuracy and resolution of the inversion properties. The results of synthetic data from Pearl River... [more]

To cope with the increasing energy demand, power systems, especially distribution networks, face many challenges. Recently, these networks have become complex and large, and their stability and reliability are not easy to be handled. The integration of renewable energy resources and at the same time limiting their accompanied high fault currents is one of the approvable suggestions. Many solutions have appeared to restrict the fault currents, but fault current limiters (FCLs) arise as an efficient and promising solution to whether to interrupt or limit the fault currents to allowable limits. This paper presents a literature review of the integration of renewable energy resources as distributed generation units (DGs) and FCLs in distribution networks. The DGs can be categorized based on their size and ability to deliver active or reactive power in addition to their fuel. All of solar, wind, water, biomass, geothermal, and fuel cell are utilized as the main engine for these units. Additi... [more]

Oil well cement microcracks cause formation fluid channeling, compromising oil and gas extraction safety. Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) can absorb water and swell to prevent fluid channeling. In this study, an alkali-resistant and pH-sensitive SAP was prepared based on the properties of oil well cement slurry. The preparation of the SAP was optimized, including monomer ratio, cross-linking agent dosage, and monomer concentration. The pH sensitivity and alkali resistance of the SAP were evaluated. The results revealed that the SAP exhibited good pH sensitivity, with the absorption rate in water being 2.18 times that of cement slurry filtrate (CSF) at 95 °C. Furthermore, the FTIR spectrum showed that the SAP had a stable molecular structure. The secondary absorption rate in water of the SAP after soaking in CSF was not different from the original absorption rate. Styrene−butadiene latex (SBL) can be used to adjust the SAP’s absorption rate. The SAP’s absorption rate had a good exponential... [more]

Darcy’s law has long been used to describe the flow in porous media. Despite the progress that took place in oil production industry research, it became clear that there is a loss of pressure, especially in the area near the wellbore region, where Darcy’s law is not applicable. For this reason, Forchheimer presented his equation in 1910, where he added a new term to Darcy’s law dealing with pressure loss due to inertial forces by introducing a new term, the β coefficient, into the equation. This paper presents a study of fluid flow through porous media, where water was used as a working fluid. Furthermore, the characteristics of the non-Darcy flow were analyzed by presenting the corresponding pressure and velocity gradient curves for each pressure. Extensive analysis indicates that many of the correlations available in the literature either have defective units or are the product of a small number of experiments. In this study, we benefit from relatively large samples, the radial flow,... [more]

3-dimensional (3D) flux machines accommodate many design and analysis challenges. Transverse flux machines (TFMs) are mostly useful for low speed, high torque applications but in this research a fault tolerant transverse flux alternator with segmented stator has been prototyped and several important design and manufacturing challenges have been thoroughly investigated as different scenarios. The proposed machine consists of axially separated, 4-single phase to achieve low speed power of 40 Watts at 400 revolutions/minute (rpm). In addition, the machine must achieve several high-speed specifications at 15,000 rpm. It is demonstrated that the proposed TFM could be an alternative to more conventional radial flux machines in aerospace as validated within the paper. However, the necessity of stator segmentation and the use of soft magnetic composites for the proposed 3D flux machine lead to many important design and optimization considerations. Therefore, this paper investigates the manufac... [more]
