The Elephant Problem—Determining Bulk Thermal Diffusivity
Robert Beaufait, Sebastian Ammann, Ludger Fischer
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Storage, measurement method, thermal diffusivity
This study investigates a measurement method of thermal diffusivity for samples with arbitrary geometries and unknown material properties. The aim is to curve fit the thermal diffusivity with the use of a numerical simulation and transient temperature measurement inside the object of interest. This approach is designed to assess bulk material properties of an object that has a composite material structure such as underground soil. The method creates the boundary conditions necessary to apply analytical theory found in the literature. It was found that measurements best correlated with theory and simulation at positions between the center and surface of an object.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: data collection, Internet of Things, power materials warehouse, topology control, wireless sensor network
In order to realize the intelligent management of a power materials warehouse, the Internet of Things based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a promising effective solution. Considering the limited battery capacity of sensor nodes, the optimization of the topology control and the determination of the amount of collected data are critical for prolonging the survival time of WSNs and increasing the satisfaction of the warehouse supplier. Therefore, in this paper, an optimization problem on sensor association and acquisition data satisfaction is proposed, and the subproblem of the sensor association is modeled as the knapsack problem. To cope with it, the block coordinate descent method is used to obtain the suboptimal solution. A sensor association scheme based on the ant colony algorithm (ACO) is proposed, and the upper and lower bounds of this optimization problem are also obtained. After this, a cluster head selection algorithm is given to find the optimal cluster head. Finally, t... [more]
A Method of Comparative Evaluation of the Drive Units of Two Bucket Elevators—A Case Study
Piotr Sokolski, Justyna Sokolska
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bucket elevator, condition monitoring, drive unit, vibration severity
Bucket elevators are applied in many industries for bulk material handling. One of the main requirements for these devices is their high operational reliability. This applies in particular to power units that must operate continuously without failure. This article presents a comparative assessment of the drive units of two bucket elevators. The vibration intensity of their bearing units was used as the basis for the comparison. The evaluation was carried out using three independent methods based on the vibration velocity analysis: in the time domain, in the frequency domain and using the probabilistic approach.

Jihu Lee, Sung-Hun Son, Kibum Kim
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, phase change materials, Simulation, solar air heater
Indoor heating systems currently used are highly dependent on fossil fuels; hence, it is urgent to develop a new heating system to achieve carbon zero-emission. A solar air heater is eco-friendly because it generates nearly zero greenhouse gases. In this study, a parametric study was conducted for optimizing solar air heater design applicable to indoor heating. Installing the internal structure in the solar heater changes the interior flow characteristic, resulting in the air temperature increased by about 14.2 K on average compared to the heater without the internal structure. An additional case study was carried out to optimize the ideal quantity of phase change materials (PCM) in terms of mass fraction and heat capacity for various operating conditions. An excessive amount of PCM (e.g., 66% of the storage space filled with PCM) deteriorates the performance of the air heater unless the entire PCM could be melted during the daytime. After heating, the air temperature was maintained th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: autoclave steaming, duration of regimes, Energy Efficiency, loading level of autoclave, moisture content, wood materials
This paper puts forward a methodology for calculating the duration and energy efficiency of regimes for autoclave steaming of wooden prisms for veneer production at limited heat power of the steam generator, depending on the dimensions of the prism’s cross section, wood moisture content, and loading level of the autoclave. The methodology is based on the use of two personal mathematical models: the 2D non-linear model of the temperature distribution in non-frozen wooden prisms subjected to steaming and subsequent conditioning in an air medium, and the model of the non-stationary heat balance of autoclaves for steaming wood materials. Using the suggested methodology, the calculation and research into the duration and energy efficiency of regimes for heating of beech prisms have been carried out. The variables used were an initial temperature of 0 °C, cross-section dimensions 0.3 × 0.3 m, 0.4 × 0.4 m, and 0.5 × 0.5 m, moisture content of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 kg·kg−1, during their steaming i... Phase Change Materials (PCMs) Based in Paraffin/Synthetic Saponite Used as Heat Storage Composites
Raquel Trujillano, Beatriz González, Vicente Rives
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: clay, one-pot synthetic organophilic saponite, phase change materials
Synthetic saponites were successfully used to prepare phase change materials (PCMs) based on paraffin/synthetic saponite. Paraffin/synthetic saponites PCMs were prepared by a solution intercalation process. The PCMs were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses and nitrogen adsorption. The thermal properties and the stability of PCMs were measured by DSC analysis and from heating−cooling curves. The results showed that the prepared PCMs have a higher heating rate and a lower cooling speed than paraffin because the heat storage was improved with the synthetic saponite. A one-pot synthesis method for obtaining PCM has been successfully developed in this work. The material thus obtained had better results for heat storage applications.

Keywords: metal catalysts, metal oxides catalysts, supercritical water, supercritical water gasification, supercritical water oxidation, waste treatment
In response to increasing energy demand, various types of organic wastes, including industrial and municipal wastewaters, or biomass wastes, are considered reliable energy sources. Wastes are now treated in supercritical water (SCW) for non-fossil fuel production and energy recovery. Considering that SCW technologies are green and energetically effective, to implement them on a large scale is a worldwide interest. However, issues related to the stability and functionality of materials used in the harsh conditions of SCW reactors still need to be addressed. Here we present an overview on materials used in the SCW technologies for energy harvesting from wastes. There are catalysts based on metals or metal oxides, and we discuss on these materials’ efficiency and selectivity in SCW conditions. We focus on processes relevant to the waste-to-energy field, such as supercritical water gasification (SCWG) and supercritical water oxidation (SCWO). We discuss the results reported, mainly in the... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cooling load profiles, Energy Efficiency, phase change material, studies of dynamic behavior, thermally activated building system
Increasing peak power demand implies the increasing significance of energy storage. Technologies that efficiently store heat and cold are also important for increasing the share of renewables and improving the efficiency of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The present experimental study investigated the dynamic behavior of a room with suspended thermally activated ceiling panels filled with a material containing 60% paraffin. The purpose of the study was to determine the specific cooling power and the total energy supplied to the phase change material (PCM) during regeneration. Convective heat flux density, radiant heat flux density, and the heat transfer coefficient (convective, radiant) at the ceiling surface were calculated. Analysis shows that shifting system activation to use lower temperatures during the night maintains thermal comfort.

Piotr Cheluszka
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: automatic control, dynamics, mining energy consumption, mining rocks, roadheader, simulation tests
The process of cutting rocks with a boom-type roadheader results in extreme dynamic loads and vibrations. Mining, especially in the case of hard rocks, is associated with large energy consumption, which, when combined with low process efficiency, can lead to low drilling performance. These phenomena are undesirable because excessive dynamic load leads to low machine durability, as well as deterioration of work conditions and safety. Low mining efficiency affects the economics of mining works conducted using roadheaders. However, these adverse effects can be minimized by optimizing the cutting process, thanks to the automatic control of the roadheader. The present article discusses the concept of automatic control of a boom-type roadheader’s cutting heads movement. Based on previously conducted computer investigations, it was assumed that reducing the energy consumption of the cutting process and improving the dynamic state of the roadheader (objective functions) are possible only by co... Subject: Materials
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, artificial neural network, biodigester, geomembrane, quality, raw material, thermofusion process
Recently, biodigesters have attracted much attention as an efficient alternative for energy generation and organic waste treatment. The final performance of a biodigester depends heavily on the quality of its building process and the selection of its raw material: the geomembrane. The geomembrane is the coat that covers the biodigester used to control the migration of fluids. Therefore, the selection of the proper geomembrane, in terms of thickness, resistance, flexibility, etc., is fundamental. Unfortunately, there are no studies for the selection of geomembranes, and usually, it is an empirical process performed by workers based on their own experience. Such empirical selection might be inaccurate, limited, inconvenient, and even dangerous. In order to assist workers during the building process of a biodigester, this study proposes the use of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify a geomembrane as appropriate or not appropriate for the manufacture of a biodigester. The ANN is... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: acetate, fed-batch reactor, H2 and CO2 conversion, metagenome, methane, Methanothermobacter, power-to-gas, starvation, thermophilic biogas
The performance of a mixed microbial community was tested in lab-scale power-to-methane reactors at 55 °C. The main aim was to uncover the responses of the community to starvation and stoichiometric H2/CO2 supply as the sole substrate. Fed-batch reactors were inoculated with the fermentation effluent of a thermophilic biogas plant. Various volumes of pure H2/CO2 gas mixtures were injected into the headspace daily and the process parameters were followed. Gas volumes and composition were measured by gas-chromatography, the headspace was replaced with N2 prior to the daily H2/CO2 injection. Total DNA samples, collected at the beginning and end (day 71), were analyzed by metagenome sequencing. Low levels of H2 triggered immediate CH4 evolution utilizing CO2/HCO3− dissolved in the fermentation effluent. Biomethanation continued when H2/CO2 was supplied. On the contrary, biomethane formation was inhibited at higher initial H2 doses and concomitant acetate formation indicated homoacetogenesi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: magnetohydrodynamic, porous heat surface, surface force, thermal enhancement, thermal properties
The physical aspects of inclined MHD nanofluid toward a stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium were visualized, which has numerous applications in industry. Two types of nanoparticles, namely copper and aluminum oxide, were used, with water (limiting case of Casson liquid) as the base fluid. Similarity transformations were used to convert the partial differential equations into a set of ordinary differential equations. Closed solutions were found to examine the velocity and temperature profiles. It was observed that an increment in the magnitude of the Hartmann number, solid volume fraction, and velocity slip parameter brought a reduction in the velocity profile, and the opposite behavior was shown for the permeability parameter in Cu−water and Al2O3−water nanofluids. The temperature field, local skin friction, and local Nusselt number were further examined. Moreover, the study of Cu and Al2O3 is useful to boost the efficiency of thermal conductivity and thermal energy in particl... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: emissions at cold start, portion of idling, RDE, stop & go, warm-up
The real driving emission (RDE) testing for certification of vehicles is performed in conditions that are well defined in legislation. For emissions inventories and for research, the influences of some extended driving conditions on emissions are an interesting issue. In the present work, some examples of RDE results from two common passenger cars with gasoline and diesel propulsion are given. The varying driving conditions were “winter/summer”, “mild/aggressive”, and “higher altitude/slop”. The driving conditions: “winter”, “aggressive”, and “higher slope/altitude” generally require more energy, cause higher fuel consumption, and therefore, higher CO2-emissions. The condition of “winter driving”, especially in the urban type of operation, may cause some longer phases with not enough warmed-up exhaust aftertreatment and consequently some increased gaseous emissions. The DPF eliminates the nanoparticles (PN) independently on the driving conditions. Nevertheless, the DPF regeneration has... [more]

Plastics are versatile materials used in a variety of sectors that have seen a rapid increase in their global production. Millions of tonnes of plastic wastes are generated each year, which puts pressure on plastic waste management methods to prevent their accumulation within the environment. Recycling is an attractive disposal method and aids the initiative of a circular plastic economy, but recycling still has challenges to overcome. This review starts with an overview of the current European recycling strategies for solid plastic waste and the challenges faced. Emphasis lies on the recycling of polyolefins (POs) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which are found in plastic packaging, as packaging contributes a signification proportion to solid plastic wastes. Both sections, the recycling of POs and PET, discuss the sources of wastes, chemical and mechanical recycling, effects of recycling on the material properties, strategies to improve the performance of recycled POs and PET, an... Subject: Materials
Keywords: abrasiveness and grindability, attrition test machine, coal bed breakage test, coal mechanical properties, internal friction
The operating costs of breaking coal particles into fine powder, to achieve optimum combustion for the boilers in a power plant, are made up of power input to carry on an energy intensive comminution mechanism and to overcome friction losses within pulverising machines. The operating costs also include the cost of the replacement of the processing system’s components due to wear. This study presents the development and application of an attrition test machine that enables an investigation of the factors that influence pulverizing efficiency. The attrition tester simulates grinding conditions in real vertical spindle mills. In this kind of mill, as with the tester, the size reduction process results from a shearing action during the redistribution of the coal particles. The redistribution and attrition within the coal bed are forced by movement of the rollers (or by a disc rotation, in the case of the tester). The testing method was oriented toward mechanical properties, i.e., internal... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: elastic modulus, limestone reservoir, Pannonian Basin, ultrasonic velocity measurement
Understanding elastic properties of reservoir rocks is essential for seismic modeling under different saturation conditions as well as lithology discrimination. Experiments on elastic properties of limestones are significantly less published compared to siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The current study presents the results of laboratory measurements on Pannonian Basin limestone cores. The research was carried out for the first time for a hydrocarbon reservoir in the Bjelovar Depression, located in the southern part of the Pannonian Basin. Ultrasonic velocity measurements and determination of dynamic elastic properties were performed on limestone plugs, in dry and saturated condition under different confining pressure steps. Based on the results obtained in laboratory conditions, an empirical relationship between shear wave velocity (Vs) and compressional wave velocity (Vp) has been defined. The saturated samples show an effect of shear modulus weakening, while three samples have a she... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric train, finite element analysis, hybrid excited linear flux switching machine, rope-less elevator
Linear Flux Switching Machines (LFSMs) possess the capability to generate adhesive thrust force, thus problems associated with conventional rotatory electric machines and mechanical conversion assemblies can be eliminated. Additionally, the unique features of high force/power density, efficiency, and a robust secondary structure make LFSMs a suitable candidate for linear motion applications. However, deficiency of controllable air-gap flux, risk of PM demagnetization, and increasing cost of rare earth PM materials in case of PMLFSMs, and inherent low thrust force capability of Field Excited LFSMs compels researchers to investigate new hybrid topologies. In this paper, a novel Double-Sided Hybrid Excited LFSM (DSHELFSM) with all three excitation sources, i.e., PMs, DC, and AC windings confined to short moving primary and segmented secondary providing short flux paths is designed, investigated, and optimized. Secondly, unequal primary tooth width optimization and additional end-teeth at... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneous photocatalysis, hydrogen generation, nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanotubes, quantum dots, vis response, water splitting
In the past few decades, extensive studies have been performed to utilize the solar energy for photocatalytic water splitting; however, up to the present, the overall efficiencies reported in the literature are still unsatisfactory for commercialization. The crucial element of this challenging concept is the proper selection and design of photocatalytic material to enable significant extension of practical application perspectives. One of the important features in describing photocatalysts, although underestimated, is particle morphology. Accordingly, this review presents the advances achieved in the design of photocatalysts that are dedicated to hydrogen generation, with an emphasis on the particle morphology and its potential correlation with the overall reaction performance. The novel concept of this work—with the content presented in a clear and logical way—is based on the division into five parts according to dimensional arrangement groups of 0D, 1D, 2D, 3D, and combined systems.... Biogas production is an important component of sustainable energy management. In addition to energy-rich biogas, this process also generates solid waste in the form of digestate. The management of this stream has been problematic for many years. One promising method of utilizing this fraction seems to be incineration under controlled conditions. This paper presents an analysis of mixtures of different digestates to assess their suitability for incineration. Four digestates based on corn silage CS and apple pomace AP were used as test fuel. The ultimate and proximate analysis showed that this fuel deviates from the standards accepted for pure biomass, but was found in other fuels, especially those treated as waste. This materials can be a valuable source of energy, but combustion needs be undertaken in special units. Moisture content of investigated digestate-type ranges from 11.9−12.2% and ash content ranges from 8.2% to 11.6%. This could lead to ash sintering and slugging problems, wh... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ampacity rating, bedding material, field experiment, heat dissipation, thermal cable rating, underground power cable
To prevent accelerated thermal aging or insulation faults in cable systems due to overheating, the current carrying capacity is usually limited by specific conductor temperatures. As the heat produced during the operation of underground cables has to be dissipated to the environment, the actual current carrying capacity of a power cable system is primarily dependent on the thermal properties of the surrounding porous bedding material and soil. To investigate the heat dissipation processes around buried power cables of real scale and with realistic electric loading, a field experiment consisting of a main field with various cable configurations, laid in four different bedding materials, and a side field with additional cable trenches for thermally enhanced bedding materials and protection pipe systems was planned and constructed. The experimental results present the strong influences of the different bedding materials on the maximum cable ampacity. Alongside the importance of the basic... [more]
Impact of a Punching Process on the SyRM Iron Loss: SPICE Model as an Effective Tool for Iron Loss Modeling

Subject: Materials
Keywords: analytical methods, nondestructive testing, soft magnetic materials, synchronous reluctance motors
Many technologies for cutting the magnetic laminations, from which electric motors cores are built, change material properties, among which are magnetizability and iron loss, thus affecting the motor parameters such as motor efficiency. This problem is particularly important for low-power motors, in which the dimensions of the magnetic circuit elements are relatively small. The correct estimation of the motor efficiency is important as early as at its design stage. This is possible when the correct material characteristics are used. This knowledge and analytical model enabling fast estimation of material properties (depending on the actual size) are necessary for engineers, who design electrical motors by analyzing many solution variants in a short time. The author proposes an analytical model of changing material properties, implemented in SPICE software. Its effectiveness was compared with measurement results while being a competitive solution in relation to other analytical models.... [more]
