Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioethanol, co-culture, Fermentation, Pichia pastoris, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, waste-to-energy
This paper evaluates the feasibility of bioethanol production from onion waste by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris and their novel co-culture through fermentation. The process parameters were optimized for each strain and their combination to observe the synergistic effect of co-fermentation. A dinitro salicylic acid (DNS) test was conducted to study the reducing sugar content of samples at different time intervals. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis was used to compare results for functional groups of samples before and after fermentation, and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) analysis was performed to measure the bioethanol concentration obtained at different combinations of pH (5, 5.5, 6), temperature (20 °C, 30 °C, 40 °C), and time (24−110 h). The maximum bioethanol concentration was achieved through a monoculture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, i.e., 30.56 g/L. The ethanol productivity was determined based on the ethanol con... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon materials, enhanced heat transfer, molten salt, nanofluids, solar energy
Molten salt is an excellent medium for heat transfer and storage. The unique microstructure of carbon nanomaterials leads to good mechanical stability, low density, high thermal conductivity, and high strength, etc. The addition of carbon nanomaterials to molten salt to form molten salt nanofluid can remarkably enhance the specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of molten salt and reduce the molten salt viscosity, which is of great importance to increase the heat storage density and reduce the heat storage cost. Nevertheless, some challenges remain in the study of such nanofluids. The main challenge is the dispersion stability of carbon nanomaterials. Therefore, to improve research on carbon nanofluids, this paper summarizes the progress of carbon-based molten salt nanofluid research worldwide including the preparation methods of molten salt nanofluids, the improvement of heat transfer performance, and the improvement of heat storage performance. The effects of carbon nanoparti... [more]

Keywords: Hamzeh oil reservoir, Hummar formation, pressure decline, Shueib formation, water influx
This paper was conducted to delimit the water influx in the Hamzeh oil reservoir, located in northeastern Jordan approximately 150 km east of Amman. Petroleum reservoirs are frequently encompassed by water aquifers that back up the reservoir pressure through water inflow. When the pressure declines in a petroleum reservoir, the water aquifer responds by providing an influx of water. Gradually, the damage is reduced and then eliminated, and more oil is produced from the reservoir. The material balance equation (MBE) is used as the fundamental method for this study, predicting reservoir performance for a period of 11 years. The results for this study prove that the reservoir has a water drive mechanism and that the original oil in place (OOIP) was 24,958,290 m3. The projected oil recovery factor ranges from 10.9 to 25 percent for the Hummar and Shueib formations, respectively, depending on the areal efficiency assumed in the calculations. The water influx for the 11-year period was predi... [more]

Currently, the global issue for countries is the search for raw materials and the production of bioenergy within their country; bioenergy also includes biodiesel fuels. One of the most promising biodiesel fuels is the green diesel fuel produced by the hydrogenation of vegetable oils. Three methods have been proposed to obtain high-quality biodiesel and environmentally friendly diesel fuel: compounding green diesel with hydro-treated diesel fuel, compositions of the improved fuel «green diesel» with bio-additives, and two-component mixtures of environmentally friendly diesel fuel with bio-additives. Using these methods, it is possible to produce fuel for diesel engines with improved lubricating properties, the wear scar diameter is reduced to 232 microns, according to EN 590: 2009, this value standard is up to 460 microns. The optimal quantitative composition of three-component environmentally friendly diesel fuel with improved lubricity was established. The dependence of the change in... [more]

Keywords: Baohai Bay basin, lithofacies, pore characterization, Qikou sag, Shahejie Formation, shale oil enrichment
The lithology and lithofacies assemblage of shale are highly complex and heterogeneous in the continental shale formations due to rapid changes in the sedimentary environment and source material, complicating the evaluation of shale oil enrichment areas, such as the member 3 of the Shahejie Formation in the Qikou sag, Bohaibay Basin, China. We used core observations and descriptions of well F39 × 1 and performed X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis to investigate the shale lithofacies characteristics and types in member 3 of the Shahejie Formation, and their effects on shale oil enrichment. The results showed the following. (1) The lithofacies are divided into four types according to the shale’s laminar structure, lithological characteristics, mineral composition, and organic matter content: thin laminar shale, thick laminar shale, massive mudstone, and argillaceous siltstone. These are divided into six s... [more]
Understanding Energy Citizenship: How Cultural Capital Shapes the Energy Transition

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cultural capital, energy citizenship, energy transition, Netherlands
Community involvement and citizenship have been crucial drivers in energy transitions worldwide. To deepen our understanding of the energy transition and to further promote energy citizenship, we leverage Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital to shed light on the inequities in community-centered energy transition processes. More specifically, this study demonstrates that cultural capital is an important indicator of an individual’s willingness to participate in renewable energy-related behavior and social movements. Using survey data in the Netherlands as a case study, it finds that depending on the type of energy citizenship, i.e., material participation (investments) or communicative participation (protest), different types of cultural capital are in play. The results of this study imply that a nuanced approach towards both concepts, namely energy citizenship and cultural capital, is needed. The scholarly and practical implications of this study are discussed, and the study conclude... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas composition, biogas yield, blends, sewage sludge, sorghum
The paper presents research on the impact of adding various forms of sorghum to sewage sludge on the anaerobic digestion process. The use of liquid sewage sludge alone in biogas plants at wastewater treatment plants is inefficient due to the low total solid (dry matter) content of this substrate. The tests revealed that the production of methane in biogas is low and amounted to 17.9% (105.4 Nm3∙Mg−1, VS—volatile solid). Therefore, other substrates should be blended with sewage sludge to increase the total solid of the batch. Sorghum silage, sorghum pomace, and sorghum juice were added to the sewage sludge in various proportions during the research. As a result, the improvement of the biogas process, the stabilization of the biogas production curve, as well as the increase in methane yield were observed. The most biogas and methane were obtained from a mixture of sorghum juice (5%) and sewage sludge (664.8 Nm3∙Mg−1 VS and 53.9%, respectively). Biogas production from other substrates bas... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: nuclear magnetic resonance, pore structure, pore volume, T2 spectrum, underground gas storage
The underground gas storage (UGS) in depleted sandstone reservoirs forms the largest proportion of the UGS market in China. Multiple cycles of natural gas injection and production in the sandstone cause the rapid increase and drawdown of pore pressure, which may induce damage to the rock skeleton structure, and cause complex fluid flow paths in the sandstone reservoir. In this paper, transverse relaxation time (T2), nuclear magnetism resonance imaging, and high-pressure mercury intrusion analysis are combined to evaluate the variation in pore structure of medium-grained sandstone. The results show that cyclic injection and production of fluid leads to a slight increase in total pore volume, indicating that weak damage to rocks occurs. The T2 spectrum at the low pore pressure (10 MPa) and high pore pressure (25 MPa) both show that the shrinkage of the medium-size pores occurs after multiple cycles of injection and production. The pore volume of large-size pores was not highly correlated... [more]

Keywords: alumina, BDS, dielectric constant, dielectric loss factor, electrical insulation, epoxy resin, nanocomposites, nanodielectrics, nanofiller
The paper presents the effects of gradual temperature curing on the dielectric properties of epoxy nanocomposite samples. Samples were prepared based on Class H epoxy resin filled with nano-alumina (Al2O3) for different wt% loadings (0.5 wt% to 5.0 wt%) and two different filler sizes (13 nm and <50 nm), i.e., two different specific surface area values. During the research, specimen sets were cured gradually at increasingly higher temperatures (from 60 °C to 180 °C). Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was used to determine the characteristics of the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor in the frequency range from 10−3 Hz to 105 Hz. As a result, it was possible to analyze the impact of the progressing polymer structure thermosetting processes on the observed dielectric parameters of the samples. The nano-Al2O3 addition with 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, and 3.0 wt% resulted in a decrease in dielectric constant values compared to neat epoxy resin samples. The most significant re... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: axial tension, buckling, collapse, different loading paths, sandwich pipes
In this paper, the effects of different loading paths of axial tension and external pressure on the collapse pressure of sandwich tubes are studied by experiments and finite element models. The difference of the two loading paths is investigated. Eight experiments were carried out to study the influence of different loading paths on pipeline collapse pressure under the same geometric and material parameters. Parameterization studies have been carried out, and the results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The test and finite element results show that the loading path of external pressure first and then the axial tension (P→T) is more dangerous; the collapse pressure of the sandwich pipe is smaller than the other. Through parametric analysis, the influence of the axial tension and the diameter-to-thickness ratio of the inner and outer pipe on the collapse pressure under different loading paths are studied.

Keywords: coal mining, index weighting method, pore structure parameters, water-bearing capacity index
Accurate prediction of the water-bearing capacity of aquifers is crucial for protecting the surface ecological environment and ensuring safety during coal mining. In this study, a macro−micro combination was used to investigate the water-bearing capacity of bedrock aquifers. At the micro-level, the micro pore parameters of various sandstones were determined through cast sheeting. At the macro-level, the porosity and water absorption rate of various sandstones were determined experimentally. After that, a new index weighting method was proposed to comprehensively evaluate the water-bearing capacity index of sandstone. According to this method, the water-bearing capacity of aquifers in the Guojiahe coalmine were evaluated. The research results revealed that the water-bearing capacity of sandstone was mainly related to its pore connectivity, and the water-bearing capacity of sandstone in the Luo’he and Zhi’luo formation was considerably greater than that in the Yan’an formation. The water... [more]

This paper is a thorough review of innovative architectures of electro-hydraulic servovalves that exploit actuation systems based on piezo-electric materials. The use of commercially available piezo-electric actuators, namely, piezo stacks, amplified piezo stacks, rectangular benders, and ring benders, is very promising for the actuation of the main stages and of the pilot stages of servovalves given the fast response and low weight of piezoelectric materials. The use of these actuators can also allow novel designs to be developed, thus helping manufacturers to overcome the typical drawbacks of commercial servovalves, such as the high complexity and the high internal leakage of the pilot stages of two-stage servovalves as well as the large size and weight of direct-drive servovalves. First, the piezoelectric actuators that can be used for driving servovalves are presented in the paper, and their characteristics are thoroughly discussed. The main novel architectures present in the liter... [more]
A Study of Eutectic Temperature of Sugar Mixture for Thermal Energy Storage

Subject: Materials
Keywords: eutectic temperature, Excess Gibbs Energy, phase change materials
We studied Phase Change Materials (PCMs), which can be used as thermal energy storage for temperatures lower than 120 °C: They can store both sensible heat from a changing temperature and latent heat from changing the state of a substance. The advantage of storing energy in a PCM is that it can be reused continuously, without the degradation of efficiency. Here, the PCM mixture consists of fructose and xylitol and thus, this PCM can be used to store energy below 120 °C. The calculated Excess Gibbs Energy and activity coefficient of xylitol and fructose decreased as the fraction of xylitol increased. We tested a system, which included an evacuated tubular collector and—fructose mixtures. The system with the PCM maintained a water temperature ~14 °C higher than water without the PCM. This PCM system could store 248 kJ/kg. The xylitol—fructose mixture had a market price ~$US 4.62 $/kg (2018 price), so compared to other PCMs, xylitol-fructose was cheap and store energy efficiently.

We describe the external and internal hydrogen interaction on contacting surfaces in the “cylinder−piston rings” friction coupling. Under the influence of high temperatures and pressure, the oil in the combustion chamber at a temperature up to 1473 K decomposes and forms small amounts of water. External hydrogen (H2) is subsequently formed. Hydrogen removal from the piston rings reduces the heterogeneity of the structure, residual stresses, and uneven physical and chemical properties of the near-surface layers, which reduces the stress concentration and, as a consequence, results in an improvement in the performance characteristics of the surface layers of the friction couple “cylinder-piston rings” of the spark ignition engine.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: axial pile load test, composite pile, connection integrity, lateral pile load test, load-displacement response, mechanical joint
Offshore wind-turbine support structures are largely made of steel since steel monopiles have accounted for the majority of installations in the last decade. As turbines become bigger, steel structures have led to an exponential increase in material and installation costs. From this point of view, the use of concrete for future support structures has been initiated. In this study, concrete−steel composite piles have been investigated. A pre-tensioned high strength concrete pile was placed in the lower part, mainly to support the axial load, and a steel pile in the upper part to resist the lateral load. A mechanical joint was adapted to connect the two different types of piles. Static axial, dynamic axial, and lateral load tests were performed to evaluate the load-displacement response of the composite pile, verify the integrity of the mechanical joint, and investigate its potential application to offshore wind foundations. This paper focused on the load-displacement response and the co... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coupled static–dynamic loads, dynamic tensile strength, flattened Brazilian disc, fracturing behavior, naturally saturated rocks
In a naturally saturated state, rocks are likely to be in a stress field simultaneously containing static and dynamic loads. Since rocks are more vulnerable to tensile loads, it is significant to characterize the tensile properties of naturally saturated rocks under coupled static−dynamic loads. In this study, dynamic flattened Brazilian disc (FBD) tensile tests were conducted on naturally saturated sandstone under static pre-tension using a modified split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device. Combining high-speed photographs with digital image correlation (DIC) technology, we can observe the variation of strain applied to specimens’ surfaces, including the central crack initiation. The experimental results indicate that the dynamic tensile strength of naturally saturated specimens increases with an increase in loading rate, but with the pre-tension increases, the dynamic strength at a certain loading rate decreases accordingly. Moreover, the dynamic strength of naturally saturated san... [more]

Although the manufacturers labelled commercially available bio-based products as biodegradable, there are discrepancies concerning the time frame for their sustainable biodegradation and methane production. Starch-based, polylactic acid-based and oxo-degradable foils were anaerobically treated in thermophilic condition (55 °C, 100 days). The effect of alkaline pretreatment on foils degradation was also investigated. To examine changes in their mechanical and physical properties, static tensile tests and microscopic analyses, FTIR and surface roughness analyses were conducted. Despite the thermophilic condition, and the longer retention time compared to that needed for biowaste, a small amount of methane was produced with bio-based foils, even after pretreatment (ca. 30 vs. 50 L/kg VS) and foils only lost functional and mechanical properties. The pieces of bio-based materials had only disintegrated, which means that digestate may become contaminated with fragments of these materials. Th... [more]

Humanity is dependent on natural resources. Use and productivity of these resources plays an important role in energy savings and circular economy. The goal of this contribution is to evaluate productivity of resources in the frame of EU countries. Single analysis deals with data from the publicly available portal database and collected data were processed in the statistical software JMP. The trend of development and analysis of variability and linear dependence helped to create cluster analysis and comparison of the EU countries. The results from the view of average value of the indicator registered the growth, and from the view of variability the statistically important differences were verified for EU member states. Some pairs of indicators recorded positive, while some pairs recorded negative linear dependence. Cluster analysis shows two groups of countries—the first one with positive results, having the lowest tax burden in the case of energy taxes and environment, and the second... [more]

Keywords: Co3(BTC)2·12H2O, cobalt trimesate, MOFs, solvothermal synthesis
We report on the synthesis and the characterization of a novel cobalt trimesate metal-organic framework, designated as KCL-102. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern of KCL-102 is dominated by a reflection at 10.2° (d-spacing = 8.7 Å), while diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy indicates that the divalent cobalt centers are in two different coordination geometries: tetrahedral and octahedral. Further, the material shows low stability in humid air, and it transforms into the well-known phase of hydrous cobalt trimesate, Co3(BTC)2·12H2O. We associated this transition with the conversion of the tetrahedral cobalt to octahedral cobalt.

Agave bagasse is a residual biomass in the production of the alcoholic beverage tequila, and therefore, it is a promising raw material in the development of biorefineries using hot compressed water pretreatment (hydrothermal processing). Surfactants application has been frequently reported as an alternative to enhance monomeric sugars production efficiency and as a possibility to reduce the enzyme loading required. Nevertheless, the surfactant’s action mechanisms in the enzymatic hydrolysis is still not elucidated. In this work, hot compressed water pretreatment was applied on agave bagasse for biomass fractionation at 194 °C in isothermal regime for 30 min, and the effect of non-ionic surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 80, Span 80, and Polyethylene glycol (PEG 400)) was studied as a potential enhancer of enzymatic saccharification of hydrothermally pretreated solids of agave bagasse (AGB). It was found that non-ionic surfactants show an improvement in the conversion yield of cellulose to gl... [more]

Keywords: charge process, experimental tests, thermal energy storage, thermal stratification, thermocline thickness, water temperature evolution
This paper demonstrates that it is possible to characterize the water temperature profile and its temporal trend in a hot water storage tank during the thermal charge process, using a minimum number of thermocouples (TC), with minor differences compared to experimental data. Four experimental tests (two types of inlet and two water flow rates) were conducted in a 950 L capacity tank. For each experimental test (with 12 TC), four models were developed using a decreasing number of TC (7, 4, 3 and 2, respectively). The results of the estimation of water temperature obtained with each of the four models were compared with those of a fifth model performed with 12 TC. All models were tested for constant inlet temperature. Very acceptable results were achieved (RMSE between 0.2065 °C and 0.8706 °C in models with 3 TC). The models were also useful to estimate the water temperature profile and the evolution of thermocline thickness even with only 3 TC (RMSE between 0.00247 °C and 0.00292 °C). A... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: dimensionless numbers, enhanced oil recovery, fractured reservoirs, gravity and capillary forces
The enhanced oil recovery mechanisms in fractured reservoirs are complex and not fully understood. It is technically challenging to quantify the related driving forces and their interaction in the matrix and fractures medium. Gravity and capillary forces play a leading role in the recovery process of fractured reservoirs. This study aims to quantify the performance of EOR methods in fractured reservoirs using dimensionless numbers. A systematic approach consisting of the design of experiments, simulations, and proxy-based optimization was used in this work. The effect of driving forces on oil recovery for water injection and several EOR processes such as gas injection, foam injection, water-alternating gas (WAG) injection, and foam-assisted water-alternating gas (FAWAG) injection was analyzed using dimensionless numbers and a surface response model. The results show that equilibrium between gravitational and viscous forces in fracture and capillary and gravity forces in matrix blocks d... [more]

Keywords: corona losses, metering data, synchrophasor (PMU) measurements, transmission line losses
This paper presents an advanced model for monitoring losses on a 400 kV over-head transmission line (OHL) that can be used for measured data verification and loss assessment. Technical losses are unavoidable physical effects of energy transmission and can be reduced to acceptable levels, with a major share of technical losses on transmission lines being Joule losses. However, at 400 kV voltage levels, the influence of the electrical corona discharge effect and current leakage can have significant impact on power loss. This is especially visible in poor weather conditions, such as the appearance of fog, rain and snow. Therefore, loss monitoring is incorporated into exiting business process to provide transmission system operators (TSO) with the measure of losses and the accurate characterization of measured data. This paper presents an advanced model for loss characterization and assessment that uses phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements and combines them with end-customer measurem... [more]
