Xu Jiang, Ming Liu, Xingxun Li, Li Wang, Shuang Liang, Xuqiang Guo
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: crude oil, hydrophobic, interfacial tension, nanoparticle, surfactant
Surfactants and nanoparticles play crucial roles in controlling the oil-water interfacial phenomenon. The natural oil-wet mineral nanoparticles that exist in crude oil could remarkably affect water-oil interfacial characteristics. Most of recent studies focus on the effect of hydrophilic nanoparticles dispersed in water on the oil-water interfacial phenomenon for the nanoparticle enhanced oil recovery. However, studies of the impact of the oil-wet nanoparticles existed in crude oil on interfacial behaviour are rare. In this study, the impacts of Span 80 surfactant and hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles on the crude oil-water interfacial characteristics were studied by measuring the dynamic and equilibrium crude oil-water interfacial tensions. The results show the existence of nanoparticles leading to higher crude oil-water interfacial tensions than those without nanoparticles at low surfactant concentrations below 2000 ppm. At a Span 80 surfactant concentration of 1000 ppm, the increase of... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: COMSOL, ex-FEM, phase change materials (PCMs), thermal performance
The thermal performance of building envelopes is essential for building thermal comfort and the reduction of building energy requirements. Phase change materials (PCMs) implemented in building envelopes can improve thermal performance. An explicit finite element method (ex-FEM) has been developed based on a previous study to investigate the heat transfer performance through building walls with installed PCMs. For verification, we introduce an electrical circuit analogy (ECA) method. For model validation, at first, COMSOL is used. For comparison, data were collected from experiments using a small hotbox, part of the sides are covered by PCMs with different configurations. This work shows how the ex-FEM model can predict the wall’s temperature profile with and without incorporated PCM. With the implementation of PCMs, the work problematizes unpredictable influences for modeling. In addition, the study introduces results from simulations of sequencing of PCM layers in wall construction.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: iteration method, nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), wound rotor synchronous generator (WRSG)
This paper presents a nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit method and an electromagnetic characteristic analysis and verification of a wound rotor synchronous generator (WRSG). The reluctance generated by the stator, rotor, and air gap is subdivided to form a reluctance construction. A nonlinear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) for the WRSG is constructed and solved by an iteration method. Moreover, to calculate the inductance of the generator, the reluctance circuit of the d−qaxis is constructed, and the inductance of the generator is obtained using the initial relative permeability of the material. Using the electromagnetic parameters obtained via the MEC method, the power generation characteristics of the generator are predicted. The results of this MEC method are also verified by comparing them with the finite element analysis (FEA) results and experimental results.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Batteries, battery materials, carbon emissions, Energy Storage, environmental decision making
The current EU energy and climate policy targets a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the forthcoming years. Carbon pricing, embedded in the EU emissions trading system, aims at achieving emission reductions in a more evenly spread way and at the lowest overall cost for society, compared with other environmental policy tools, such as coal or electricity taxes, or incentives such as subsidies on renewables. Still, the implementation of the decarbonization policy depends on several technical parameters such as the type, size and connectivity of the energy system as well as economic restrictions that occur. Within this paper, an optimization tool will be presented, focusing on cleaner energy production and on the control and reduction of environmental impact regarding energy storage solutions. Various types of batteries are examined and evaluated towards this direction. Emphasis is given to setting new criteria for the decision-making process, considering the size of bat... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Storage, heat pipe, latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES), phase change material (PCM)
Usage of phase change materials’ (PCMs) latent heat has been investigated as a promising method for thermal energy storage applications. However, one of the most common disadvantages of using latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is the low thermal conductivity of PCMs. This issue affects the rate of energy storage (charging/discharging) in PCMs. Many researchers have proposed different methods to cope with this problem in thermal energy storage. In this paper, a tubular heat pipe as a super heat conductor to increase the charging/discharging rate was investigated. The temperature of PCM, liquid fraction observations, and charging and discharging rates are reported. Heat pipe effectiveness was defined and used to quantify the relative performance of heat pipe-assisted PCM storage systems. Both experimental and numerical investigations were performed to determine the efficiency of the system in thermal storage enhancement. The proposed system in the charging/discharging process sig... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: damping performance, double linkage, self-powered MR damper, vibration energy harvesting
Magnetorheological (MR) dampers, used as intelligent semi-active vibration control devices to achieve low energy consumption, fast response, controllability, and other capabilities are generally installed with a variety of sensors on their exterior to ensure that the damping force can be accurately controlled. However, external sensors are often affected by external complications that reduce the reliability of the damper, and the cost of powering the damper coils in remote locations where power is not available can be significantly increased. Based on these problems, a new self-powered MR damper scheme is proposed. The proposed MR damper has both energy-harvesting capabilities and damping controllability, and greatly improves the stability and application range of the device by converting vibration energy into electrical energy to supply the excitation coil. The MR damper can drive the piston rod in a linear reciprocating motion by external excitation, which converts mechanical energy... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: along-well characterization, completion quality, drill cuttings, horizontal wells, Montney Formation, reservoir quality
Completion design for horizontal wells is typically performed using a geometric approach where the fracturing stages are evenly distributed along the lateral length of the well. However, this approach ignores the intrinsic vertical and horizontal heterogeneity of unconventional reservoirs, resulting in uneven production from hydraulic fracturing stages. An alternative approach is to selectively complete intervals with similar and superior reservoir quality (RQ) and completion quality (CQ), potentially leading to improved development efficiency. In the current study, along-well reservoir characterization is performed using data from a horizontal well completed in the Montney Formation in western Canada. Log-derived petrophysical and geomechanical properties, and laboratory analyses performed on drill cuttings, are integrated for the purpose of evaluating RQ and CQ variability along the well. For RQ, cutoffs were applied to the porosity (>4%), permeability (>0.0018 mD), and water saturat... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: complex hydride, energy transition, gender, Hydrogen, hydrogen storage, hydrogen tank, metal hydride, social impact
This paper aims at addressing the exploitation of solid-state carriers for hydrogen storage, with attention paid both to the technical aspects, through a wide review of the available integrated systems, and to the social aspects, through a preliminary overview of the connected impacts from a gender perspective. As for the technical perspective, carriers to be used for solid-state hydrogen storage for various applications can be classified into two classes: metal and complex hydrides. Related crystal structures and corresponding hydrogen sorption properties are reviewed and discussed. Fundamentals of thermodynamics of hydrogen sorption evidence the key role of the enthalpy of reaction, which determines the operating conditions (i.e., temperatures and pressures). In addition, it rules the heat to be removed from the tank during hydrogen absorption and to be delivered to the tank during hydrogen desorption. Suitable values for the enthalpy of hydrogen sorption reaction for operating condi... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: contamination flashover, low pressure, optical diagnostic method, the local arc
Flashover of contaminated insulators is a major problem for power systems at high altitude. Laboratory experiments have shown that the optical diagnostic method can provide extensive information on the physical process of contamination flashover. In this paper, a study of the local arc on a wet polluted surface under low pressure by using the optical diagnostic method is presented. The thickness of the continuous spectrum, spectral line intensity and the spectral composition varies significantly in different stages of the local arc development. Thermodynamic parameters of the local arc (including electron temperature, electron density and conductivity) are obtained by analyzing the spectra. Both the electron temperature and the conductivity increase with the increase in leakage current and air pressure. Although the electron density does not change significantly with an increase in leakage current, it increases significantly with an increase in air pressure. The findings of this work c... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coating process, hole transporting layer, hole transporting material, large area cell, low cost, perovskite solar cell, stability
Among the new generation photovoltaics, perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology reached top efficiencies in a few years. Currently, the main objective to further develop PSCs is related to the fabrication of stable devices with cost-effective materials and reliable fabrication processes to achieve a possible industrialization pathway. In the n-i-p device configuration, the hole transporting material (HTM) used most is the highly doped organic spiro-fluorene-based material (Spiro-OMeTAD). In addition to the high cost related to its complex synthesis, this material has different issues such as poor photo, thermal and moisture stability. Here, we test on small and large area PSCs a commercially available HTM (X55, Dyenamo) with a new core made by low-cost fluorene−xantene units. The one-pot synthesis of this compound reduces 30 times its cost with respect to Spiro-OMeTAD. The optoelectronic performances and properties are characterized through JV measurement, IPCE (incident photon to curre... [more]

Keywords: emulsion, gel, interfacial engineering, porous material, solar evaporator
Solar vapor generation is emerging as one of the most important sustainable techniques for harvesting clean water using abundant and green solar energy. The rational design of solar evaporators to realize high solar evaporation performances has become a great challenge. Here, a porous solar evaporator with integrative optimization of photothermal convention, water transport and thermal management is developed using attractive Pickering emulsions gels (APEG) as templated and followed by interfacial engineering on a molecular scale. The APEG-templated porous evaporators (APEG-TPEs) are intrinsically thermal insulation materials with a thermal conductivity = 0.039 W·m−1·K−1. After hydrolysis, t-butyl groups on the inner-surface are transformed to carboxylic acid groups, making the inner-surface hydrophilic and facilitating water transport through the inter-connected pores. The introduction of polypyrrole layer endows the porous materials with a high light absorption of ~97%, which could e... [more]

Keywords: building, HPM, materials, protection, review
A modern weapon, high power microwave (HPM) pulses, can have a profound effect on the quality of functioning of society as the use of this weapon can result in damage to or destruction of electronic equipment and computer and telecommunications systems, both military and civilian. Protection against the energy of HPM pulses can be achieved in two basic ways: by using radiation-absorbent materials (RAM) or artificial electromagnetic (EM) structures. If the object to be protected is a building, protection based on RAM is used. Hence, this literature review focuses on the possibilities of using HPM energy absorbers in building products and structures. Attention is concentrated on four basic types of elements: claddings, concrete and mortar, small-sized elements (bricks, hollow masonry units), and paint coatings. In each of the categories, examples of HPM radiation absorbers having a high potential to be combined with basic construction materials are given on the basis of the literature on... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: cavitation, lock-in, modal work approach, vibration, von Kármán vortex street
To accelerate the integration of fluctuating renewable energy technologies in the power systems, it is necessary to increase the flexibility of hydropower by operating turbines at off-design conditions. Unfortunately, this strategy causes deleterious flow phenomena such as von Kármán’s vortices at the wake of the vanes and/or blades. When their shedding frequency lies in the vicinity of a structure’s natural frequency, lock-in occurs and vibration amplitudes increase significantly. Moreover, if cavitation occurs at the centers of these vortices, the structure’s dynamic response will be modified. In order to understand this interaction and to avoid its negative consequences, the vibration behavior of a NACA 0009 hydrofoil under a torsional lock-in condition was numerically simulated for cavitation-free and cavitating-flow conditions. The results showed that the presence of vortex cavitation modified the formation and growth process of shed von Kármán vortices in the near-wake region whi... [more]

Geomechanical characterization plays a key role in optimizing the stimulation treatment of tight reservoir formations. Petrophysical models help classify the reservoir rock as the conventional or unconventional type and determine hydrocarbon-saturated zones. Geomechanical and petrophysical models are fundamentally based on well-log data that provide reliable and high-resolution information, and are used to determine various relationships between measured borehole parameters and modeled physical rock properties in 3D space, with the support of seismic data. This paper presents the geomechanical characterization of the Middle Cambrian (Cm2) sediments from Eastern Pomerania, north Poland. To achieve the aim of this study, 1D well-log-based and 3D models based on seismic data of the rocks’ petrophysical, elastic, and strength properties, as well as numerical methods, were used. The analysis of the Middle Cambrian deposits revealed vertical and horizontal heterogeneity in brittleness, the d... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, carbon materials, carbon nanofiber, energy storage system, supercapacitor
Carbon materials have gained considerable attention in recent years due to their superior properties. Activated carbon has been used in supercapacitors due to its density and rapid adsorption capability. The sp2−sp3 hybrid porous carbon materials are synthesized using herringbone-type carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and carbonized spherical phenol resins, with KOH as the activating agent. The morphology of the hybrid porous carbon facilitates the formation of ribbon-like nanosheets from highly activated CNFs wrapped around spherical resin-based activated carbon. The etching and separation of the CNFs produce a thin ribbon-like nanosheet structure; these CNFs simultaneously form new bonds with activated carbon, forming the sp2−sp3 hybrid porous structure. The relatively poor electrical conductivity of amorphous carbon is improved by the 3D conductive network that interconnects the CNF and amorphous carbon without requiring additional conductive material. The composite electrode has high electr... [more]

Due to the inconsistency and intermittence of solar energy, concentrated solar power (CSP) cannot stably transmit energy to the grid. Heat storage can maximize the availability of CSP plants. Especially, thermochemical heat storage (TCHS) based on CaO/CaCO3 cycles has broad application prospects due to many advantages, such as high heat storage density, high exothermic temperature, low energy loss, low material price, and good coupling with CSP plants. This paper provided a comprehensive outlook on the integrated system of CaO/CaCO3 heat storage, advanced reactor design, heat storage conditions, as well as the performance of CaO-based materials. The challenges and opportunities faced by current research were discussed, and suggestions for future research and development directions of CaO/CaCO3 heat storage were briefly put forward.

Based on density functional theory calculation, we screened suitable Ti-decorated carbon-based hydrogen adsorbent structures. The adsorption characteristics and adsorption mechanism of hydrogen molecules on the adsorbent were also discussed. The results indicated that Ti-decorated double vacancy (2 × 2) graphene cells seem to be an efficient material for hydrogen storage. Ti atoms are stably embedded on the double vacancy sites above and below the graphene plane, with binding energy higher than the cohesive energy of Ti. For both sides of Ti-decorated double vacancy graphene, up to six H2 molecules can be adsorbed around each Ti atom when the adsorption energy per molecule is −0.25 eV/H2, and the gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity is 6.67 wt.%. Partial density of states (PDOS) analysis showed that orbital hybridization occurs between the d orbital of the adsorbed Ti atom and p orbital of C atom in the graphene layer, while the bonding process is not obvious during hydrogen adsorptio... Subject: Materials
Keywords: aging of contact surface, contact electrode, low voltage DC (LVDC) switches, magnetic extinguishing method
With the present state of the direct current (DC) distribution market, securing the safety of the DC distribution system is emerging as a major issue. Like AC distribution systems, DC switches and circuit breakers are one of the main means to ensure safety. However, in the DC system, since there is no current zero point in the load current, the phenomenon occurring when the circuit is cut off is different from that of the AC system, so technical research is required to cope with this. In this study, the aging characteristics of the contact electrode of a 400 V class low voltage DC (LVDC) switch is studied for the development of wall-mount switches or circuit breakers for residential houses. As an arc extinguishing method to break DC load current, a prototype experimental circuit breaker that uses a magnetic extinguishing method that is effective for blocking low voltage low power DC is invented, and an automated experiment system is established. The DC switch test repeats the operation... [more]

Keywords: dynamic cutting, mechanical removal, optimum cutting energy, pendulum, picks, specific energy
The need for large and fast excavations, together with noise and vibration limitations, means that mechanical removal is increasingly used rather than blasting. In mechanical removal, the cutting tools hit the rock and penetrate it, and then move in the direction of cutting, dragging and detaching a portion of rock called chip. Most research on mechanical removal approaches it as a static process without taking into account the speed at which the cutting element impacts the rock. This work presents the design of a pendulum equipment capable of simulating the impact of a cutting element, specifically a pick, against a rock, reproducing the removal in a similar way to how it is carried out in real excavations. Cutting tests are carried out with concrete samples with a cement/sand ratio of 1:1 and 3:1, the volume of material that is removed is calculated using a 3D scanner and images of the tests are collected with a high-speed video camera to facilitate the interpretation of the results....
