Francisco Jose Durán, Fernando Dorado, Luz Sanchez-Silva
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic study, exergetic analysis, hydrogen yield, industrial plant, simulation software, steam methane reforming
Steam methane reforming (SMR) for hydrogen production was studied by simulating the reformer and pre-reformer sections. This simulation was validated by using available data taken from a real industrial plant, which enabled precise correlations with the real industrial process to be found. Moreover, the influence of the molar ratio between the raw materials (steam-to-carbon molar ratio, S/C) and the reformer outlet temperature (Tcc) was studied. The energy requirements for the reforming reaction increased with the S/C ratio. The energy needed for developing the reforming reaction also increased with Tcc, but the hydrogen yield when operating with a high S/C ratio and Tcc increased. In addition, an exergetic analysis was carried out to identify exergy losses in the SMR process, and most were destroyed in the chemical reactors. Increasing the combustion air flow was proposed for finding an optimum value for exergetic efficiency in the process, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Finally,... [more]
Research on the Equivalent Virtual Space Vector Modulation Output of Diode Clamped N-level Converter under Multi-Modulation Carrier Modulation

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decomposing modulation wave, virtual space vector modulation (VSVPWM), zero-sequence component
Diode-clamped multi-level converters have DC-side capacitors in series, which will lead to the unbalance of DC-side capacitor voltage, the distortion of the output waveform, the increase of total harmonic distortion (THD), and even the damage of switching devices, which will make the system inoperable. The proposal of virtual space vector pulse-width modulation (VSVPWM) realizes the balanced control of the capacitor voltage, but when the output level of converter increases, the implementation of VSVPWM becomes very complicated, and the amount of calculation also increases greatly, thus hindering its application in the multi-level circuit. Compared with VSVPWM, the carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CBPWM) is simple to operate and easy to implement. If the equivalent relationship between CBPWM and VSVPWM can be found, the application of VSVPWM can be generalized to any level, and the advantages of VSVPWM can be fully utilized. This paper aims to study the inner relationship of VSVPWM... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power module, silicon carbide, turn-on transient
The SiC (silicon carbide) high-power module has great potential to replace the IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) power module in high-frequency and high-power applications, due to the superior properties of fast switching and low power loss, however, when the SiC high-power module operates under inappropriate conditions, the advantages of the SiC high-power module will be probably eliminated. In this paper, four kinds of SiC high-power modules are fabricated to investigate fast switching performance. The variations in characteristics of drain-source voltage at turn-on transient under the combined conditions of multiple factors are studied. A characteristic of voltage plateau is observed from the drain-source voltage waveform at turn-on transient in the experiments, and the characteristic is reproduced by simulation. The mechanism behind the voltage plateau is studied, and it is revealed that the characteristic of drain-source voltage plateau is a reflection of the miller plateau... [more]
A Novel Two-Zone Thermodynamic Model for Spark-Ignition Engines Based on an Idealized Thermodynamic Process

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, isentropic process, real-time, spark-ignition engine, two-zone model
The thermodynamic model is a valuable simulation tool for developing combustion engines. The most widely applied thermodynamic models of spark-ignition engines are the single-zone model and the two-zone model. Compared to the single-zone model, the two-zone model offers more detailed in-cylinder thermodynamic conditions, but its governing equations are numerically stiffer, therefore it is restricted when applied in computationally intensive scenarios. To reduce the two-zone model’s stiffness, this paper isolates an idealized thermodynamic process in the unburned zone and describes this idealized thermodynamic process by an algebraic equation. Assisted with this idealized thermodynamic process, this paper builds a novel two-zone model for spark-ignition engines, whose governing equations are simplified to a set of two ordinary differential equations accompanied by a set of three algebraic equations. Benchmarked against the single-zone model and conventional two-zone model, the novel two... [more]

Keywords: data-based techniques, hydro power-plant, model-based techniques, operational limits, P–Q diagram, synchronous generator
This paper presents an experience in the design and implementation of the condition-monitoring system for the synchronous generators whose primary purpose is to record data for the identification of the capability limits of the P−Q diagram of three generators in hydro power-plant. Paper presents details about the monitoring system, the underlying theory of the identification of the synchronous generator model with a focus on the calculation of the capability limits in the P−Q diagram. Furthermore, a computationally efficient method for the representation of capability limits suitable for the implementation within the industrial automation and control system of the power-plant is described in detail. Finally, the capability diagrams for three generators were implemented in the power-plant supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) system.

Keywords: disruptive effect, filtered spark gap, lightning overvoltage, surge arrester, transformer protection
Protection of transformers, as one of the most expensive equipment in the power system, against lightning overvoltage impulses is a vital task. This paper, for the first time so far, investigates the effects of a filtered spark gap on the protection level of transformers against lightning overvoltage impulses. The filter is an inductor that is placed in series with the transformer and before the spark gap aiming to reduce the voltage at the connection point of the spark gap, and hence, enhancing the protection level of the transformer under lightning overvoltages. The experimental laboratory tests are accomplished on a 400 kVA, 22/0.4 kV, Delta-Star ( Δ − Y ) connection type transformer under 110 kV, and 125 kV overvoltage impulses, whereas the size of the spark gap is set to 80 mm and two inductors of 35 μ H and 119 μ H are considered. In order to perform a more in-depth analysis, a model that works reasonably close to the empirical case is developed in the EMTP-... [more]

Keywords: experimental analysis, Inconel 601, new design, spark plug, thermo-mechanical model
Inconel 601 is one material of choice for intermediate- to high-temperature protective coatings for spark plugs’ ground electrodes. Production of ground electrodes of spark plugs implies the following operations: the tamping of the copper core in an Inconel 601 cup, cold-forming of the assembly, annealing, welding, and bending of the final spark plug. On the production line, the use of Inconel 601 as a protective coating for ground electrodes leads to possible cracking in the welded area after bending. In the present paper, possible causes of cracking are analyzed. It is clearly shown that a combination of Copper −Inconel interface oxidation, Inconel yielding during the heat treatment, and micro-movements during bending lead to cracks in the welded area of the ground electrode. First, the detrimental effect of gaps, between Copper and Inconel 601, is shown experimentally. Second, a thermo-mechanical analysis combined with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations identified the a... [more]

Keywords: agglomeration, conducting polymer, hybrid solar cell, nanowire, passivation, PEDOT:PSS, photovoltaic response, recombination losses, silicon nanowire, solar cell, surface traps
Among various photovoltaic devices, the poly 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene:poly styrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and silicon nanowire (SiNW)-based hybrid solar cell is getting momentum for the next generation solar cell. Although, the power-conversion efficiency of the PEDOT:PSS−SiNW hybrid solar cell has already been reported above 13% by many researchers, it is still at a primitive stage and requires comprehensive research and developments. When SiNWs interact with conjugate polymer PEDOT:PSS, the various aspects of SiNW array are required to optimize for high efficiency hybrid solar cell. Therefore, the designing of silicon nanowire (SiNW) array is a crucial aspect for an efficient PEDOT:PSS−SiNW hybrid solar cell, where PEDOT:PSS plays a role as a conductor with an transparent optical window just-like as metal-semiconductor Schottky solar cell. This short review mainly focuses on the current research trends for the general, electrical, optical and photovoltaic design issues associated wi... [more]

Keywords: Butanol, coconut oil, diesel fuel, emissions, engine, fuel consumption, performance
The global concentration of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere is increasing as well as the emissions of harmful pollutants. Utilization of liquid biofuels in combustion engines helps to reduce these negative effects. For diesel engines, the most common alternative fuels are based on vegetable oils. Blending neat vegetable oils with diesel and/or alcohol fuels is a simple way to make them suitable for diesel engines. In this study, coconut oil was used in ternary fuel blends with diesel and butanol. Coconut oil is a potentially usable source of renewable energy, especially in the Pacific, where it is a local product. Diesel fuel-coconut oil-butanol fuel blends were used in concentrations of 70%/20%/10% and 60%/20%/20%, and 100% diesel fuel was used as a reference. The effect of the fuel blends on the production of harmful emissions, engine smoke, performance parameters, fuel consumption and solid particles production was monitored during the measurement. The engine was kept at a const... [more]

Keywords: controlled charging, electric vehicles, grid-side effects, photovoltaic potentials, power grid
To reduce CO2 emissions, it is necessary to cover the increasing energy demand of e-mobility with renewable energy sources. Therefore, the influence of increasing e-mobility and synergy effects between e-mobility and renewable energy sources need to be investigated. The case study presented here shows results from the analysis of grid-side and energetic synergy effects between e-mobility charged only at work and photovoltaic (PV) potentials. The basis of the grid study is a simplified cell-based grid model. Following the determination of synthetic charging profiles for e-mobility, PV potential profiles, load and production profiles, we perform load flow calculations for different scenarios and a simulation period of one year using the grid model. After the grid study, the energy analyses are carried out using four key performance indicators. The grid study shows that line overloads caused by PV production are only reduced and not avoided by increasing e-mobility and vice versa. The inc... [more]

Keywords: light direction dependence, microstructure, NIP, perovskite solar cell, photoluminescence, photovoltaic parameters, PIN, semi-transparent
For over a decade, single-junction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have experienced an unprecedent increase in efficiencies and even offer opportunities to surpass the Shockley−Queisser limit in multijunction configuration. There is consequently an intense need for easily processable semi-transparent PSCs as a basis of affordable tandems. The current study reports the comparison of negative-intrinsic-positive (NIP) and positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) architectures based on CH3NH3PbI3{Cl}-based perovskite. Both devices could be prepared with the same N-type (SnO2 nanoparticles) and P-type (poly-triarylamine (PTAA) polymer) materials. Each layer (except for electrodes) was deposited using solvent-based low temperature processes, contrasting with other literature studies, especially SnO2 for PIN-type purposes. A thorough experimental comparison of the two architectures reveals rather similar optical and structural properties for perovskites, whether deposited on an N- or P-type underlayer... [more]

Keywords: double-layer continuous-pipe double-gradient drilling, migration efficiency, natural gas hydrate, pressure regulation, solid-state fluidized mining
In order to improve the recovery efficiency of natural gas hydrate in solid-state fluidized mining of natural gas hydrate, we solve drilling safety problems, such as narrow density of natural gas hydrate formation pressure window and poor wellbore stability caused by high upstream velocity during drilling and production. In this study—in order to increase the natural gas hydrate output and reduce production costs—based on the principle of the solid-state fluidized mining, a natural gas hydrate drilling method based on double-layer continuous-pipe double-gradient drilling was proposed to solve the above problems. The article introduces a drilling and production tool combination scheme and the mathematical model of wellbore-pressure dynamic regulation. Simulation software was used to study and compare the migration efficiency of multiphase mixed slurries of sediment and natural gas hydrates in the horizontal section of the double-layer continuous-pipe double-gradient drilling method and... Keywords: electrochemical model, lithium-ion battery, Model Reduction, system identification
The lithium-ion battery is a complicated non-linear system with multi electrochemical processes including mass and charge conservations as well as electrochemical kinetics. The calculation process of the electrochemical model depends on an in-depth understanding of the physicochemical characteristics and parameters, which can be costly and time-consuming. We investigated the electrochemical modeling, reduction, and identification methods of the lithium-ion battery from the electrode-level to the system-level. A reduced 9th order linear model was proposed using electrode-level physicochemical modeling and the cell-level mathematical reduction method. The data-driven predictor-based subspace identification algorithm was presented for the estimation of lithium-ion battery model in the system-level. The effectiveness of the proposed modeling and identification methods was validated in an experimental study based on LiFePO4 cells. The accuracy and dynamic characteristics of the identified m... Subject: Materials
Keywords: Brownian motions, hybrid nanofluid, one- and two-step colloid stability method, sedimentation, thermal conductivity, ultrasonication
Currently; the transfer of new technologies makes it necessary to also control heat transfer in different industrial processes—both in practical and research—applications. Not so long ago water and ethylene glycol were the most frequently used media in heat transfer. However, due to their relatively low thermal conductivity, they cannot provide the fast and effective heat transfer necessary in modern equipment. To improve the heat transfer rate different additives to the base liquid are sought, e.g., nanoadditives that create mono and hybrid nanofluids with very high thermal conductivity. The number of scientific studies and publications concerning hybrid nanofluids is growing, although they still represent a small percentage of all papers on nanofluids (in 2013 it was only 0.6%, and in 2017—ca. 3%). The most important point of this paper is to discuss different ways of stabilizing nanofluids, which seems to be one of the most challenging tasks in nanofluid treatment. Other future chal... [more]
Determinants of Oil Footprints Embodied in Sino-US Trade: A Perspective from the Globalizing World

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-regional input-output model, oil footprint, structural decomposition analysis
Oil plays an important role in global resource allocation. With the continuous development of the global supply chain, trade has brought a great impact on oil consumption. However, few studies have been focused on the oil consumption embodied in trade, that is, the oil footprints. Therefore, based on the multi-regional input-output model and structural decomposition model, this paper investigates the evolution and driving factors of the oil footprint between the two countries with the largest oil consumption in the world (China and the United States). By measuring the flow of oil footprint in bilateral trade, their trade transactions are analyzed at the national and industry levels. The results show that in Sino-US trade, China is a net exporter of virtual oil and the trade surplus is huge. The United States is the main destination of China’s virtual oil consumption exports. In 2004, China’s embodied oil net exports flowing into the US even exceeded its total net exports. Low value-add... [more]
Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Inverter Based on Deviation Control Principle

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disturbance resistance, frequency domain analysis, linear ADRC, linear extended state observer, photovoltaic grid-connected power generation system
Photovoltaic grid-connected power generation systems are easily affected by external factors, and their anti-interference performance is poor. For example, changes in illumination and fluctuations in the power grid affect the operation ability of the system. Linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) can extract the “summation disturbance” information from the system and eliminate the disturbance at the fastest speed by controlling the signal before it affects the final output of the system. In this paper, an improved linear ADRC based on the principle of deviation control is proposed, and the voltage outer loop is controlled by an improved LADRC. This improved LADRC takes the deviation between each state variable and its observed value as the regulation basis for each state variable of the linear extended state observer (LESO). Based on the analysis of the bode diagram in the frequency domain, it can be concluded that, compared with the unimproved LADRC, the new LADRC has bet... [more]

Keywords: allocation, iron and steel industry, MILP modeling, off-gas, Optimization, Scheduling
Off-gas is one of the by-products of the steelmaking process. Its potential energy can be transformed into heat and electricity by means of cogeneration. A case study using a coke oven and Linz−Donawitz converter gas is presented. This work addresses the gas allocation problem for a cogeneration system producing steam and electricity. In the studied facility, located in northern Spain, the annual production of the plant requires 95,000 MWh of electrical energy and 525,000 MWh of thermal energy. The installed electrical and thermal power is 20.4 MW and 81 MW, respectively. A mixed integer linear programming model is built to optimize gas allocation, thus maximizing its benefits. This model is applied to a 24-h scenario with real data from the plant, where gas allocation decision-making was performed by the plant operators. Application of the model generated profit in a scenario where there were losses, increasing benefits by 16.9%. A sensitivity analysis is also performed. The proposed... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combined heat and power, production costs, profitability, small modular reactor
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have been recognized to have potential in decarbonizing district heating, which is currently an urgent sustainability challenge in many European countries. In this paper, the financial impacts of replacing peat and biomass-powered Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants with heat-only reactors of 24−200 MW power range and maximum output temperatures of 120 °C are studied. A district heating system of a medium-sized Nordic city in Eastern Finland is modeled with EnergyPRO computer software (EMD International A/S, Aalborg, Denmark), which is used to optimize plant units’ production for cost effectiveness. A future scenario is used to predict electricity prices, expenditures from CO2 emission allowances, and fuel prices for the studied case. Results show that the low operating expenditures of CO2 free heat-only reactors would compensate for the revenue losses from electricity sales and that a small number of micro reactors, with power output in the tens of megaw... Keywords: centralised hydrogen production, cost analysis, hydrogen economy, life cycle costing, Methane Reforming, water electrolysis
This work investigates life cycle costing analysis as a tool to estimate the cost of hydrogen to be used as fuel for Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles (HFCVs). The method of life cycle costing and economic data are considered to estimate the cost of hydrogen for centralised and decentralised production processes. In the current study, two major hydrogen production methods are considered, methane reforming and water electrolysis. The costing frameworks are defined for hydrogen production, transportation and final application. The results show that hydrogen production via centralised methane reforming is financially viable for future transport applications. The ownership cost of HFCVs shows the highest cost among other costs of life cycle analysis.

Keywords: AEP, blade damage, uncertainty quantification, wind energy, wind turbine
Wind turbine blade deterioration issues have come to the attention of researchers and manufacturers due to the relevant impact they can have on the actual annual energy production (AEP). Research has shown how after prolonged exposure to hail, rain, insects or other abrasive particles, the outer surface of wind turbine blades deteriorates. This leads to increased surface roughness and material loss. The trailing edge (TE) of the blade is also often damaged during assembly and transportation according to industry veterans. This study aims at investigating the loss of AEP and efficiency of modern multi-MW wind turbines due to such issues using uncertainty quantification. Such an approach is justified by the stochastic and widely different environmental conditions in which wind turbines are installed. These cause uncertainties regarding the blade’s conditions. To this end, the test case selected for the study is the DTU 10 MW reference wind turbine (RWT), a modern reference turbine with a... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, cybersecurity, deterministic forecasting, false data injection attack, probabilistic forecasting, wind power forecasting
The accuracy of wind power forecasting depends a great deal on the data quality, which is so susceptible to cybersecurity attacks. In this paper, we study the cybersecurity issue of short-term wind power forecasting. We present one class of data attacks, called false data injection attacks, against wind power deterministic and probabilistic forecasting. We show that any malicious data can be injected to historical data without being discovered by one of the commonly-used anomaly detection techniques. Moreover, we testify that attackers can launch such data attacks even with limited resources. To study the impact of data attacks on the forecasting accuracy, we establish the framework of simulating false data injection attacks using the Monte Carlo method. Then, the robustness of six representative wind power forecasting models is tested. Numerical results on real-world data demonstrate that the support vector machine and k-nearest neighbors combined with kernel density estimator are the... [more]
A Bidirectional Electrical Vehicle Charger and Grid Interface for Grid Voltage Dip Mitigation

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical vehicle interface, power compensation, power quality, voltage dip
Power quality issues have recently become a source of major concern due to the large increase in load demand and the addition of various sources of disturbance at the distribution level. Power quality mainly refers to voltage quality. Sudden load variations can lead to a fall in the line voltage magnitude, creating what is called a voltage sag. Many solutions have been proposed and implemented for voltage sag compensation. Power electronics-based solutions such as grid-connected converters and AC/DC schemes are considered basic units for transient voltage fault ride-through capability. This paper describes a multifunctional intelligent bidirectional electrical vehicle (EV) charger that is able to charge the EV battery at different power ratings in addition to voltage sag compensation. The performance of the proposed system is verified and validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations (R2020A). The proposed solution can effectively meet three main requirements: charging the EV battery a... [more]

Keywords: Biodiesel, Biofuels, diesel engines, diethyl ether, emissions, Ethanol
Biofuels provide high oxygen content for combustion and do modify properties that influence the engine operation process such as viscosity, enthalpy of vaporization, and cetane number. Some requirements of performance, fuel consumption, efficiency, and exhaust emission are necessary for the validation of these biofuels for application in engines. This work studies the effects of the use of diethyl ether (DEE) in biodiesel-ethanol blends in a DI mechanical diesel engine. The blends used in the tests were B80E20 (biodiesel 80%-ethanol 20%) and B76E19DEE5 (biodiesel 76%-ethanol 19%-DEE 5%). Fossil diesel (D100) and biodiesel (B100) were evaluated as reference fuels. The results revealed similar engine efficiencies among tested fuels at all loads. The use of B100 increased CO and NOx and decreased THC compared to D100 at the three loads tested. B80E20 fuel showed an increase in NOx emission in comparison with all fuels tested, which was attributed to higher oxygen content and lower cetane... [more]

The key task in the solidification of high-level waste (HLW) into a magnesium potassium phosphate (MPP) compound is the immobilization of mobile cesium isotopes, the activity of which provides the main contribution to the total HLW activity. In addition, the obtained compound containing heat-generating radionuclides can be significantly heated, which increases the necessity of its thermal stability. The current work is aimed at assessing the impact of various methodological approaches to HLW solidification on the thermal stability of the MPP compound, which is evaluated by the mechanical strength of the compound and its resistance to cesium leaching. High-salt surrogate HLW solution (S-HLW) used in the investigation was prepared for solidification by adding sorbents of various types binding at least 93% of 137Cs: ferrocyanide K-Ni (FKN), natural zeolite (NZ), synthetic zeolite Na-mordenite (MOR), and silicotungstic acid (STA).
