Exergetic, Economic and Exergo-Environmental Analysis of Bottoming Power Cycles Operating with CO2-Based Binary Mixture
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bottoming power cycles, CO2 emissions savings, CO2-based binary mixture, exergetic analysis, exergo-environmental impact indices, sustainability index
This study focused on investigating the bottoming power cycles operating with CO2-based binary mixture, taking into account exergetic, economic and exergo-environmental impact indices. The main intent is to assess the benefits of employing a CO2-based mixture working fluid in closed Brayton bottoming power cycles in comparison with pure CO2 working fluid. Firstly, selection criteria for the choice of suitable additive compound for CO2-based binary mixture is delineated and the composition of the binary mixture is decided based on required cycle minimum temperature. The decided CO2-C7H8 binary mixture with a 0.9 mole fraction of CO2 is analyzed in two cycle configurations: Simple regenerative cycle (SRC) and Partial heating cycle (PHC). Comparative analysis among two configurations with selected working fluid are carried out. Thermodynamic analyses at varying cycle pressure ratio shows that cycle with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows maximum power output and exergy efficiency at rather higher cyc... [more]

Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Design for Eddy Current Loss Reduction in Permanent Magnets to Prevent Irreversible Demagnetization
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: eddy current loss, FEA, IPMSM, irreversible demagnetization, permanent magnet, thermal equivalent circuit analysis
We designed and analyzed an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to prevent irreversible demagnetization of the permanent magnets (PMs). Irreversible demagnetization of NdFeB PMs mainly occurs due to high temperature, which should thus be minimized. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the eddy current loss in the PM through optimal design. The shape of the rotor core was optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) and response surface methodology. Three-dimensional (3-D) FEA is required for accurate computation of the eddy current loss, but there is huge time, effort, and cost consumption. Therefore, a method is proposed for indirectly calculating the eddy current loss of PMs using 2-D FEA. A thermal equivalent circuit analysis was used to calculate the PM temperature of the optimized model. For the thermal analysis, the copper loss, core loss, and eddy current loss in PMs were estimated and applied as a heat source. Based on the results, we confirmed the stability of... [more]

A Hybrid RCS Reduction Method for Wind Turbines
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: RCS reduction, reshaping methods, wind turbines
Wind turbine towers produce significant scatterings when illuminated by radars. Their reflectivity affects air traffic control, military surveillance, vessel tracking, and weather data sensing processes. Reducing the radar cross-section (RCS) of wind turbines is an essential task when building wind farms. It has been proved that round and bumpy structures can scatter radar waves and reduce the RCS of a reflector. Other research showed that taper towers generate smaller radar returns than cylindrical towers. In this research, we combine both strategies to devise a more effective method for designing wind turbine towers in the hope that their RCS can be further reduced. The test results reveal that the proposed method out-performs current reshaping methods. Wind turbine towers possessing taper shapes and periodic surface bumps deflect incident electromagnetic waves to insignificant directions. Thus, radar returns in the back-scattering directions decrease. Other experiments also verify t... [more]

Evolution of Production and Transport Characteristics of Steeply-Dipping Ultra-Thick Coalbed Methane Reservoirs
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anisotropic permeability, coalbed methane, dual peak production, large dip angle, stress heterogeneity, ultra-thick
The large spatial variability of in-situ stress and initial reservoir pressure in steeply-dipping ultra-thick coalbed methane (UTCBM) reservoirs exert strong control on the initial distribution of stress-sensitive permeability. This results in significant differences in the propagation of reservoir depressurization, gas production characteristics, distribution of fluid saturation, and evolution of permeability relative to flat-lying and thin counterpart coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs. We contrast these responses using the Fukang mining area of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, as a type-example using coupled hydro-mechanical modeling. Production response indicates: (1) Dual peaks in CBM production rate, due to the asynchronous changes in the gas production rate in each the upper and lower sections of the reservoir; (2) higher depressurization and water saturation levels in the lower section of the reservoir relative to the upper at any given distance from the production well that a... Reduction of Unburned Carbon Release and NOx Emission from a Pulverized Wood Pellet Boiler Retrofitted for Fuel Switching from Coal
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, NOx emission, unburned carbon, wall-firing boiler, wood pellet
For renewable electricity production, biomass can fully displace coal in an existing power plant with some equipment modifications. Recently, a 125 MWe power plant burning mainly anthracite in Korea was retrofitted for dedicated wood pellet combustion with a change of boiler configuration from arch firing to wall firing. However, this boiler suffers from operational problems caused by high unburned carbon (UBC) contents in the bottom ash. This study comprises an investigation of some methods to reduce the UBC release while achieving lower NOx emissions. The computational fluid dynamics approach was established and validated for typical operating data. Subsequently, it was applied to elucidate the particle combustion and flow characteristics leading to the high UBC content and to evaluate the operating variables for improving the boiler performance. It was found that the high UBC content in the bottom ash was a combined effect of the poor fuel grindability and low gas velocity in the wi... [more]

Keywords: current unbalance, dc-link switching ripple, four-wire, harmonic distortion, inverter, pulse width modulation, split-capacitor, three-phase, voltage ripple, voltage source inverter
Three-phase, four-wire split capacitor inverters are currently employed in many applications, such as photovoltaic systems, battery chargers for electric vehicles, active power filters, and, in general, in all grid-tied applications that deal with possible grid voltage and/or current unbalances. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the capacitor-switching voltage ripple and dc-link switching voltage ripple for the three-phase, four-wire, split capacitor inverters. Specifically, analytical formulations of the peak-to-peak and rms values of the voltage ripples are originally pointed out in this paper and determined in the case of balanced three-phase and unbalanced (two-phase and single-phase) output (ac) currents. The obtained results can help in designing the considered inverter and sizing of the dc-link capacitors. Reference is made to the sinusoidal PWM modulation and sinusoidal three-phase output currents with an almost unity power factor, representing a grid-connected... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electrodynamic suspension (EDS), high-temperature superconducting (HTS), Hyperloop, magnetically levitated (Maglev), null-flux levitation/guidance, superconducting magnet
The Hyperloop has been developed using various technologies to reach a maximum speed of 1200 km/h. Such technologies include magnetic levitation technologies that are suitable for subsonic driving. In the Hyperloop, the null-flux electrodynamic suspension (EDS) system and superconducting magnets (SCMs) can perform stable levitation without control during high-speed driving. Although an EDS device can be accurately analyzed using numerical analysis methods, such as the 3D finite element method (FEM) or dynamic circuitry theory, its 3D configurations make it difficult to use in various design analyses. This paper presents a new design model that fast analyzes and compares many designs of null-flux EDS devices for the Hyperloop system. For a fast and effective evaluation of various levitation coil shapes and arrangements, the computational process of the induced electromotive force and the coupling effect were simplified using a 2D rectangular coil loop, and the induced current and force... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clean coal technologies, coal to hydrogen, economic assessment of coal gasification in Poland, hydrogen production and outlook
This study documents the results of economic assessment concerning four variants of coal gasification to hydrogen in a shell reactor. That assessment has been made using discounting methods (NPV: net present value, IRR: internal rate of return), as well as indicators based on a free cash flow to firm (FCFF) approach. Additionally, sensitivity analysis has been carried out, along with scenario analysis in current market conditions concerning prices of hard coal, lignite, hydrogen and CO2 allowances, as well as capital expenditures and costs related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems. Based on NPV results, a negative economic assessment has been obtained for all the analyzed variants varying within the range of EUR −903 to −142 million, although the variants based on hard coal achieved a positive IRR (5.1−5.7%) but lower than the assumed discount rates. In Polish conditions, the gasification of lignite seems to be unprofitable, in the assumed scale of total investment outlays an... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: electric vehicle, gear ratio optimization, gearshift scheduling strategy, multi-speed transmission, vehicle performances
A novel gearshift scheduling strategy has been framed for a two-speed transmission system in electric vehicles that can save energy during hilly driving and frequently changing driving conditions through efficient electric motor operation. Unlike the traditional approach, the proposed gearshift strategy is based on the preferred vehicle speed range, vehicle acceleration, and road grade to ensure desired vehicle performances with minimum energy consumption. Meanwhile, the vehicle speed range is chosen around the electric motor rated speed, and two gearshift schedules in relation to vehicle acceleration and road grade are developed based on the motor torque generating capacity and efficiency. Appropriate gear is selected through a combined assessment of the required vehicle speed, acceleration, and road grade information. A guideline is developed and explained for the primary gearshift schedule. Next, the gear ratios and gearshift schedules are optimized combinedly in a Simulink environm... [more]

Risk Mitigation and Investability of a U-PHS Project in The Netherlands
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electric grid stabilization, electricity storage, energy transition, pumped hydro storage, regional economic development, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
We review the status of a 1.4 GW, 8 GWh underground pumped hydro storage (U-PHS) project in the southern Netherlands, which has been under development since the 1980s. Its history shows how the prospect of a large-scale U-PHS for The Netherlands (a country whose proverbial flatness prohibits PHS) has been attractive in every decade, based on proven technology in a subsurface location with validated properties, and solid analysis of its economics. Although the ongoing energy transition clearly requires massive electricity storage, (U-)PHS projects are challenging investment propositions, in The Netherlands, as elsewhere. This case study illustrates a point of general relevance, namely that although the project execution risk, related to uncertainty with respect to subsurface integrity, is very low, the transition risk, associated with the intrinsic uncertainties of an electricity system in transition, is significant. We point out mitigation strategies for both risk categories.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: industrial sector, net metering, Philippines, rooftop solar PV
The industrial sector is a major contributor to the economic growth of the Philippines. However, it is also one of the top consumers of energy, which is produced mainly from fossil fuels. The Philippine industrial sector must therefore be supported economically while minimizing the emissions associated with energy consumption. A potential strategy for minimizing costs and emissions is the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on the rooftops of industrial facilities, but this approach is hindered by existing energy policies in the country. In this work, we performed a techno-economic assessment on the implementation of rooftop solar PV in Philippine industrial facilities under different policy scenarios. Our study considered 139 randomly sampled industrial plants under MERALCO franchise area in the Philippines. Under the current net metering policy, 132 of the evaluated facilities were economically viable for the integration of rooftop solar PV. This corresponds to an additio... [more]

Adaptive Maximum Torque per Ampere Control of Sensorless Permanent Magnet Motor Drives
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: adaptive control, interior permanent magnet motors, maximum torque per ampere, sensorless control
Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) efficiency can be improved by using maximum torque per ampere control (MTPA). MTPA control utilizes both alignment and reluctance torques and usually requires information about the magnetization map of the electrical machine. This paper proposes an adaptive MTPA algorithm for sensorless control systems of IPMSM drives, which is applicable in industrial and commercial drives. This algorithm enhances conventional control schemes, where the output of the speed controller is the commanded stator current and the direct current is calculated using an MTPA equation; therefore, it can be easily implemented in the previously developed drives. The proposed algorithm does not use any motor parameters for the calculation of the MTPA trajectory, which is important for systems operating in changing environmental conditions, because motor inductances and flux linkage strongly depend on the stator current and the rotor temperature, respectively. April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), adaptive reinforcement learning (ARL), HJB equation, Lyapunov stability theory, switched systems, uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB)
In this paper, a tracking control approach is developed based on an adaptive reinforcement learning algorithm with a bounded cost function for perturbed nonlinear switched systems, which represent a useful framework for modelling these converters, such as DC−DC converter, multi-level converter, etc. An optimal control method is derived for nominal systems to solve the tracking control problem, which results in solving a Hamilton−Jacobi−Bellman (HJB) equation. It is shown that the optimal controller obtained by solving the HJB equation can stabilize the perturbed nonlinear switched systems. To develop a solution to the translated HJB equation, the proposed neural networks consider the training technique obtaining the minimization of square of Bellman residual error in critic term due to the description of Hamilton function. Theoretical analysis shows that all the closed-loop system signals are uniformly ultimately bounded (UUB) and the proposed controller converges to optimal control la... [more]

Keywords: district heating, energy planning, energy systems analysis, excess heat, heat pumps
District heating (DH) is an important technology in future smart energy systems as it allows for an efficient implementation of various renewable energy sources. As DH develops towards lower temperatures and renewable electricity production increases, new types of heat sources become relevant. Thus, the aim of this article is to assess the potential for utilizing four unconventional excess heat (UEH) sources in DH systems, namely: Data centers, wastewater treatment, metros and service sector buildings. The main method used to assess the UEH potentials is an energy system analysis focusing on the availability and economic feasibility of utilizing the UEH sources in national contexts. The analysis consists of 2015 and 2050 scenarios for Germany, Spain and France. The results show a potential for utilizing the UEH potentials in all three countries, both in 2015 and 2050 systems. The potentials are highest in the 2050 scenarios, primarily due to larger DH shares. Furthermore, the potential... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: characteristic stresses, Darcy flow, non-Darcy flow, permeability, volumetric strain
Failure tests on sandstone specimens were conducted under different confining pressures and seepage pressures by using an MTS triaxial rock testing machine to elucidate the corresponding correlations of permeability and characteristic stress with confining pressure and pore pressure during deformation. The results indicate that permeability first decreases and presents two trends, i.e., a V-shaped increase and an S-shaped trend during the non-linear deformation stage. The greater the seepage pressure, the greater the initial permeability and the more obvious the V-shaped trend in the permeability. As the confining pressure was increased, the trend in the permeability gradually changed from V- to S-shaped. Compared with the case at a high confining pressure, the decrease of permeability occurred more quickly, the rate of change becomes greater, and the sudden increase observed in the permeability happened earlier under lower confining pressures. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blast furnace, coke reactivity, gas utilization efficiency, iron-ore reducibility, mathematical model
The use of coke with high reactivity in the ironmaking blast furnace (BF) has yet to be explored, and a thorough understanding is still required to clarify the effect of coke reactivity on the BF gas utilization efficiency. In this paper, a one-dimensional kinetic model of the BF is presented and the accuracy of the model is verified. The model is then applied to analyze the effect of coke reactivity on the gas utilization efficiency of the BF. The results show that, under the operating conditions considered, the height of indirect reduction region and the starting temperature of coke solution loss reaction decrease with the increase of coke reactivity. Moreover, coke reactivity is first, directly proportional to gas utilization efficiency, and then, inversely proportional to it. In addition, high-reactivity coke may not improve gas utilization efficiency in case of high H2 content. Impact of Liquefied Natural Gas Composition Changes on Methane Number as a Fuel Quality Requirement
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuel, fuel, liquefied natural gas, Liquified Natural Gas, LNG composition, methane number
The one of main quality requirements of natural gas as an engine fuel is the methane number (MN). This parameter indicates the fuel’s capability to avoid knocking in the engine. A higher MN value indicates a better natural gas quality for gas engines. Natural gas with higher methane content tends to have higher MN value. This study presents analysis of deviation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) composition and its impact on LNG quality as an engine fuel. The analysis of higher hydrocarbons and nitrogen content impact on LNG parameters was considered for several samples of LNG compositions. Most engine manufacturers want to set a new, lower limit value for methane number at 80. This fact causes significant restrictions on the range of variability in the composition of liquefied natural gas. The goal of this study was to determine the combination of the limit content of individual components in liquefied natural gas to achieve the strict methane number criterion (MN > 80).
