A Hybrid System Based on LSTM for Short-Term Power Load Forecasting
Yu Jin, Honggang Guo, Jianzhou Wang, Aiyi Song
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data preprocessing strategy, deep learning structure, hybrid analysis-forecast system, optimization algorithm, power load forecasting
As the basic guarantee for the reliability and economic operations of state grid corporations, power load prediction plays a vital role in power system management. To achieve the highest possible prediction accuracy, many scholars have been committed to building reliable load forecasting models. However, most studies ignore the necessity and importance of data preprocessing strategies, which may lead to poor prediction performance. Thus, to overcome the limitations in previous studies and further strengthen prediction performance, a novel short-term power load prediction system, VMD-BEGA-LSTM (VLG), integrating a data pretreatment strategy, advanced optimization technique, and deep learning structure, is developed in this paper. The prediction capability of the new system is evaluated through simulation experiments that employ the real power data of Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia. The experimental results indicate that the developed system is significantly better than... [more]
Online Prediction of Vehicular Fuel Cell Residual Lifetime Based on Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter
Ke Song, Yimin Wang, Xiao Hu, Jing Cao
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive extended Kalman filter, online prediction, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, residual lifetime
The limited lifetime of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) inhibits the further development of the fuel cell industry. Prediction is one of the most effective means for managing the lifetime of a fuel cell because it can assist in the implementation of mitigation actions before a vehicular fuel cell fails by estimating the residual lifetime. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a PEMFC lifetime prediction method for online applications. This paper presents the online prediction method developed for the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell, which utilises data processing with an adaptive extended Kalman filter and a prediction formula. The formula considers different operating conditions and the external environment, which is in accord with the actual operating conditions of fuel cell vehicles. This method realises the online prediction of the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell by updating weight coefficients for the operating conditions and environmental factors... [more]

Bence Csomós, Dénes Fodor, István Vajda
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diffusion, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, geometrical parameters, li-ion battery, parameter estimation, warburg
The aim of this work is to present a fast and in situ diffusion modeling technique to extract essential electrochemical parameters from liquid-phase diffusion which can be used to implement a realistic battery in a pseudo-2D finite element modeling environment. A generalized Warburg element was used within an extended Randles equivalent circuit to obtain an appropriate fit on non-ideal diffusion impedance. Based on the calculation method presented in this paper, the values of diffusion-related parameters such as the cross-sectional area of the separator Asep, cell thickness Lcell as well as liquid-phase and solid-phase diffusion coefficients Dl and Ds were derived, successfully. A characteristic cell which allowed the exchange current density i0 and reaction rate constant k0 to be calculated was also established. The experimental data was measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), resistivity measurement and the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). The... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, kitchen house, rural house, wind flow
Most Malaysian rural houses are categorized as non-engineered buildings and vulnerable to damage during events such as windstorms due to the fact that these houses lack engineering considerations. These houses are characterized by having an attached kitchen house, and many of these houses were previously damaged by thunderstorms. The current research investigated the air flow characteristics changes surrounding these houses as a result of the presence of the kitchen. The roof pitch, position, gap height, and overhang were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the kitchen position at the center resulted in a slight increase in the suction on the ridge of the roof; however, it significantly altered the flow pattern in the windward and leeward directions. The results also showed that the roof overhang, roof pitch, and kitchen position contributed severely to the damage of the rural house. Moreover, the highest suction occurred at the ro... [more]

Cheng-I Chen, Yeong-Chin Chen, Chung-Hsien Chen, Yung-Ruei Chang
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), positive-sequence voltage analysis, power quality, recurrent wavelet fuzzy neural network (RWFNN)-based controller, voltage regulation
Dynamic voltage restorers (DVRs) are one of the effective solutions to regulate the voltage of power systems and protect sensitive loads against voltage disturbances, such as voltage sags, voltage fluctuations, et cetera. The performance of voltage compensation with DVRs relies on the robustness to the power quality disturbances and rapid detection of voltage disturbances. In this paper, the recurrent wavelet fuzzy neural network (RWFNN)-based controller for the DVR is developed. With positive-sequence voltage analysis, the reference signal for the DVR compensation can be accurately obtained. In order to enhance the response time for the DVR controller, the RWFNN is introduced due to the merits of rapid convergence and superior dynamic modeling behavior. From the experimental results with the OPAL-RT real-time simulator (OP4510, OPAL-RT Technologies Inc., Montreal, Quebec, Canada), the effectiveness of proposed controller can be verified.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: e-bikes, electric bike sharing, electromobility development policy, public bicycle system
Electrically assisted bicycles are anticipated to become an effective tool to limit not only the use of cars in cities but also their negative impact on health, the environment, and passenger transportation in cities. In this paper, we examine the effects of implementing the first fully electric bike (e-bike) sharing system in the Metropolitan Area of Gdańsk−Gdynia−Sopot in Northern Poland, where no other bike sharing system had been introduced before. The aims of this article were to determine the impact of the new e-bike sharing system on the modal choice of citizens, identify barriers to its usage, and find differences between the usage of the system in the core of the metropolitan area and in the suburbs. We used two primary data sets: the survey data collected using the computer-assisted personal interviewing technique (CAPI technique) and the data automatically acquired from the website that monitored the system activities. We performed the analysis by using nonparametric tests a... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calcium carbonate, carbon capture and utilization, Carbon Dioxide, carbonation, industrial wastes
Technologies for the management of various types of waste and the production of useful products from them are currently widely studied. Both carbon dioxide and calcium-rich waste from various production processes are problematic wastes that can be used to produce calcium carbonate. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide an overview about the state of the development of processes that use these two wastes to obtain a valuable CaCO3 powder. The paper reviews the current research on the use of post-distillation liquid from the Solvay process, steelmaking slag, concrete, cement, and gypsum waste as well as some others industrial Ca-rich waste streams in the calcium carbonate precipitation process via carbonation route. This work is an attempt to collect the available information on the possibility of influencing the characteristics of the obtained calcium carbonate. It also indicates the possible limitations and implementation problems of the proposed technologies.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convolutional neural network (CNN), deep learning, imperfect SIC, nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA), successive interference cancellation (SIC)
In this paper, a deep learning-based successive interference cancellation (SIC) scheme for use in nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication systems is investigated. NOMA has become a notable technique in the field of mobile wireless communication because of its capacity to overcome orthogonality, unlike a conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication system. In NOMA communication systems, SIC is one of the decoding schemes applied at receivers for downlink NOMA transmissions. In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based SIC scheme is proposed to improve performance of the single base station and multiuser NOMA scheme. In contrast to existing SIC schemes, the proposed CNN-based SIC scheme can effectively mitigate losses resulting from imperfections of the SIC. The simulation results indicate that the CNN-based SIC method can successfully relieve conventional SIC impairments and achieve good detection performance. Consequently, a C... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, fossil-free steel, life cycle assessment, plug-in electric vehicles, prospective LCA
The potential environmental impacts of producing and using future electric vehicles (EVs) are important given their expected role in mitigating global climate change and local air pollutants. Recently, studies have begun assessing the effect of potential future changes in EVs supply chains on overall environmental performance. This study contributes by integrating expected changes in future energy, iron, and steel production in the life cycle assessment (LCA) of EVs. In this light, the study examines the impacts of changes in these parameters on producing and charging future EVs. Future battery electric vehicles (BEV) could have a 36−53% lower global warming potential (GWP) compared to current BEV. The change in source of electricity generation accounts for 89% of GWP reductions over the BEV’s life cycle. Thus, it presents the highest GWP reduction potential of 35−48%. The use of hydrogen for direct reduction of iron in steelmaking (HDR-I) is expected to reduce vehicle production GWP b... [more]

Hwajoo Joo, Jaehan Lee, Jeyong Yoon
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrochemical lithium recovery system, lithium manganese oxide, spinel-type
Various lithium recovery technologies have been developed as securing lithium resources has become increasingly important. Among these technologies, the electrochemical lithium recovery (ELR) system is a rapid and eco-friendly extraction method that has been studied recently. In this paper, an ELR system using a spinel-type LiMn2O4 (LMO) is briefly reviewed. As LMO electrodes have high Li+ selectivity and stability compared to other lithium battery cathodes, they have been widely used as positive electrodes for the ELR system. This paper summarizes the system proposal, LMO electrode modification, system analysis, and industrial applications. Perspectives of the ELR technology are presented considering the progress of the research.
Estimation of Energy Efficiency Class Limits for Multi-Family Residential Buildings in Poland
Jerzy Kwiatkowski, Joanna Rucińska
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: certification, energy efficiency class, energy performance, residential buildings
The need to achieve energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission decreases within the building sector requires the implementation of a supportive legal framework. To fulfil this requirement, a building certification system must be developed that is easily understandable for end users. In Poland, assessments of the energy performance of buildings are based on primary energy indicator verification. However, this parameter is difficult to understand for building owners or for tenants. Therefore, in this study, energy efficiency class limits and a heating indicator for energy needs indicator have been estimated for multi-family buildings in Poland. To achieve this purpose, a reference building was used and 180 calculation variants were developed, which considered the following variables: 3 types of climate data, 4 values of building shape ratios, 3 types of ventilation, 3 thermal transmittance standards and 3 windows area ratios to the external wall. The results showed that the greatest... [more]

Keywords: building control systems, building energy systems, centralized building optimization and control, distributed building optimization and control, energy-sustainable buildings, Modelica-based test bed
Modern literature exhibits numerous centralized control approaches—event-based or model assisted—for tackling poor energy performance in buildings. Unfortunately, even novel building optimization and control (BOC) strategies commonly suffer from complexity and scalability issues as well as uncertain behavior as concerns large-scale building ecosystems—a fact that hinders their practical compatibility and broader applicability. Moreover, decentralized optimization and control approaches trying to resolve scalability and complexity issues have also been proposed in literature. Those approaches usually suffer from modeling issues, utilizing an analytically available formula for the overall performance index. Motivated by the complications in existing strategies for BOC applications, a novel, decentralized, optimization and control approach—referred to as Local for Global Parameterized Cognitive Adaptive Optimization (L4GPCAO)—has been extensively evaluated in a simulative environment, con... The Implications of Policy Uncertainty on Solar Photovoltaic Investment
Martina Assereto, Julie Byrne
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: GARCH, investment, policy uncertainty, solar photovoltaics, volatility
Policy and electricity price uncertainty provide disincentives to investors considering renewable energy investments. While electricity price uncertainty impacts on investment decisions relating to any energy investment, whether renewable or non-renewable, policy uncertainty will affect renewable energy investment decisions to a far greater extent. In this study, we consider the two main sources of uncertainty a solar Photovoltaic (PV) project is exposed to: electricity price uncertainty and policy uncertainty. We focus our analysis on utility-scale solar photovoltaics in the Pennsylvania, Jersey, Maryland Power Pool (PJM) electricity market and the New Jersey Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) market. Using Solar Renewable Energy Credits as a proxy for policy, we find that there is considerable volatility in both electricity prices and policy. In a sample covering eleven years, we implement univariate Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) and combinations of... [more]
A Mathematical Model of Biomass Combustion Physical and Chemical Processes
Florin Popescu, Razvan Mahu, Ion V. Ion, Eugen Rusu
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, thermochemical decomposition
The numerical simulation of biomass combustion requires a model that must contain, on one hand, sub-models for biomass conversion to primary products, which involves calculations for heat transfer, biomass decomposition rate, product fractions, chemical composition, and material properties, and on the other hand, sub-models for volatile products transport inside and outside of the biomass particle, their combustion, and the char reduction/oxidation. Creating such a complete mathematical model is particularly challenging; therefore, the present study proposes a versatile alternative—an originally formulated generalized 3D biomass decomposition model designed to be efficiently integrated with existing CFD technology. The biomass decomposition model provides the chemical composition and mixture fractions of volatile products and char at the cell level, while the heat transfer, species transport, and chemical reaction calculations are to be handled by the CFD software. The combustion model... [more]
Small Hydropower Plants with Variable Speed Operation—An Optimal Operation Curve Determination
Dariusz Borkowski, Marek Majdak
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC-AC converters, control design, hydraulic systems, hydroelectric power generation, power generation control, variable speed drives
In recent times, much attention has been paid to small hydropower plants (SHPs) with variable speed operation and different control techniques. Control complexity in SHPs is mainly caused by specific steady-state features of the water turbine, the long time constants of the hydraulic system and significant seasonal and/or aging-related deterioration in the system performance. This paper presents the most important features of the turbine model from a control point of view. It classifies control techniques for SHPs with variable speed operation in terms of the turbine type and SHP function (run-of-the-river and reservoir). Furthermore, various control methods are analysed taking into account the complexity of the method, dynamics, adaptability and applicability. The novelty of this study is the proposal of a simple, universal analytical formula, which, based on the basic dimensions of the turbine, determines the optimal operating curve. The proposed formula is verified on a real SHP 150... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: concentrated solar, methane cracking, solar-thermal
When driven by sunlight, molten catalytic methane cracking can produce clean hydrogen fuel from natural gas without greenhouse emissions. To design solar methane crackers, a canonical plug flow reactor model was developed that spanned industrially relevant temperatures and pressures (1150−1350 Kelvin and 2−200 atmospheres). This model was then validated against published methane cracking data and used to screen power tower and beam-down reactor designs based on “Solar Two,” a renewables technology demonstrator from the 1990s. Overall, catalytic molten methane cracking is likely feasible in commercial beam-down solar reactors, but not power towers. The best beam-down reactor design was 9% efficient in the capture of sunlight as fungible hydrogen fuel, which approaches photovoltaic efficiencies. Conversely, the best discovered tower methane cracker was only 1.7% efficient. Thus, a beam-down reactor is likely tractable for solar methane cracking, whereas power tower configurations appear... Prediction of Cooling Energy Consumption in Hotel Building Using Machine Learning Techniques
Marek Borowski, Klaudia Zwolińska
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, energy use prediction, heating and cooling system, neural network, optimization and management, support vector machine
The diversification of energy sources in buildings and the interdependence as well as communication between HVAC installations in the building have resulted in the growing interest in energy load prediction systems that enable proper management of energy resources. In addition, energy storage and the creation of energy buffers are also important in terms of proper resource management, for which it is necessary to correctly determine energy consumption over time. It is obvious that the consumption of cooling energy depends on meteorological conditions. Knowing the parameters of the outside air and the number of users, it is, therefore, possible to determine the hourly energy consumption of a cooling system in a building with some accuracy. The article presents models of cooling energy prediction in summer for a hotel building in southern Poland. The paper presents two methods that are often used for energy prediction: neural networks and support vector machines. Meteorological data, tim... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catenary-free tram, charging infrastructure, economic operation, on-board energy storage system, optimal sizing
This paper introduces an optimal sizing method for a catenary-free tram, in which both on-board energy storage systems and charging infrastructures are considered. To quantitatively analyze the trade-off between available charging time and economic operation, a daily cost function containing a whole life-time cost of energy storage and an expense of energy supplies is formulated for the optimal sizing problem. A mixed particle swarm optimization algorithm is utilized to find optimal solutions for three schemes: (1) ultracapacitors storage systems with fast-charging at each station; (2) battery storage systems with slow-charging at starting and final stations; (3) battery storage systems with fast-swapping at swapping station. A case study on an existing catenary-free tramline in China is applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that a daily-cost reduction over 30% and a weight reduction over 40% can be achieved by scheme 2, and a cost saving of 34.23% an... [more]
Solving Renewables-Integrated Economic Load Dispatch Problem by Variant of Metaheuristic Bat-Inspired Algorithm

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convergence characteristics, directional bat algorithm (dBA), operational cost, renewables incorporated ELD problem
One of the most important concerns in the planning and operation of an electric power generation system is the effective scheduling of all power generation facilities to meet growing power demand. Economic load dispatch (ELD) is a phenomenon where an optimal combination of power generating units is selected in such a way as to minimize the total fuel cost while satisfying the load demand, subject to operational constraints. Different numerical and metaheuristic optimization techniques have gained prominent importance and are widely used to solve the nonlinear problem. Although metaheuristic techniques have a good convergence rate than numerical techniques, however, their implementation seems difficult in the presence of nonlinear and dynamic parameters. This work is devoted to solving the ELD problem with the integration of variable energy resources using a modified directional bat algorithm (dBA). Then the proposed technique is validated via different realistic test cases consisting o... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: green conflict, mega PV solar plant, natural ecosystems
This study aims to develop a comprehensive method for evaluating the environmental cost/benefits of photovoltaic (PV) solar plant installation versus conserving natural ecosystems. First, the positive and negative impacts of installing PV solar plants in regions with natural ecosystems are reviewed. For focus and quantification, climate change mitigation and economic benefit were considered as benefits, and the loss of carbon sinks and biodiversity as well as disaster risk were considered as negatives. These items were also integrated as external costs using a life-cycle assessment method, and a ratio of positive versus negative impacts (P/N ratio) was developed, as part of our evaluation. The method was applied to a case study in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, where 361 large PV solar plants have been installed in areas that previously supported natural ecosystems. Prior to the PV installation, 25.5% of the plants were cleared from the natural ecosystem. Consequently, the annualized benefit... [more]
Multi-Objective Decision-Making for Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems for Cities: A Case Study of Xiongan New District in China

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emission, cost of energy, HOMER model, off-grid/grid-connected system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The application of renewable energy has become increasingly widespread worldwide because of its advantages of resource abundance and environmental friendliness. However, the deployment of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) varies greatly from city to city due to large differences in economic endurance, social acceptance and renewable energy endowment. Urban policymakers thus face great challenges in promoting local clean renewable energy utilization. To address these issues, this paper proposes a combined multi-objective optimization method, and the specific process of this method is described as follows. The Hybrid Optimization Model for electric energy was first used to examine five different scenarios of renewable energy systems. Then, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution was applied using eleven comprehensive indicators to determine the best option for the target area using three different weights. To verify the feasibility of this method, Xion... [more]
Exergy Evaluation of a Water Distribution System
Jedrzej Bylka, Tomasz Mróz
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, Exergy, water distribution system modelling, water supply, water-energy nexus
The water supply system is one of the most important elements in a city. Currently, many cities struggle with a water deficit problem. Water is a commonly available resource and constitutes the majority of land cover; however, its quality, in many cases, makes it impossible to use as drinking water. To treat and distribute water, it is necessary to supply a certain amount of energy to the system. An important goal of water utility operators is to assess the energy efficiency of the processes and components. Energy assessments are usually limited to the calculation of energy dissipation (sometimes called “energy loss”). From a physical point of view, the formulation of “energy loss” is incorrect; energy in water transport systems is not consumed but only transformed (dissipated) into other, less usable forms. In the water supply process, the quality of energy—exergy (ability to convert into another form)—is consumed; hence, a new evaluation approach is needed. The motivation for this st... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building parameter uncertainty, district heating, heat demand flexibility, optimal control, robust control
Network flexibility is the use of the thermal capacity of water that is contained in the district heating network pipes to store energy and shift the heat load in time. Through optimal control, this network flexibility can aid in applications such as peak shaving and operational heat pump optimisation. Yet, optimal control requires perfect predictions and complete knowledge of the system characteristics. In reality, this is not the case and uncertainties exist. To obtain insight into the importance of these uncertainties, this paper studies the influence of imperfect knowledge of building parameters on the optimal network flexibility activation and its performance. It is found that for the optimisation of heat pump operation, building parameter uncertainties do not present large risks. For peak shaving, a more robust result can be achieved by activating more network flexibility than may be required.
