Biochar for Vertical Greenery Systems
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, DEA, effective solutions, vertical greenery systems
Vertical greenery systems (VGS) are effective at solving urban heat. They can absorb noise pollution and dust, and, aesthetically, they are positively perceived. Systems using hydroponic irrigation and nutrition, in combination with mineral wool as a base, are light and effective (they are able to hold water, with a high percentage of air, and a good mechanical structure to hold the plant stable). However, the functionality of a system can be compromised if the water supply is depleted or the irrigation system fails. This deficiency can be partially remedied if a certain amount of biochar or a suitable organic fertilizer is also a part of the system. The research task consisted of verifying this assumption and determining the effective amount of the biochar. Samples with different amounts of biochar were examined under the same temperature and humidity conditions; extended drying times, additional costs, and safety tank size savings were found. Subsequently, the effective amount of the... [more]

Development of a Reduced Order Model of Solar Heat Gains Prediction
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building thermal performance, reduced order model, solar heat gains
The aim of this study was to elaborate and validate a reduced order model able to forecast solar heat gains as a function of the architectural parameters that determine the solar heat gains. The study focused on office buildings in Catalonia and Spain and their physical values were taken from the Spanish Building Technical Code and European Union Directive 2018/844. A reduced order model with three direct variables (solar heat gain coefficient, shade factor, window to wall ratio) and one indirect design variable (building orientation) was obtained and validated in respect to the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol. Building envelope properties were fixed and the values were taken from the national standards of Spain. This work validates solar heat gain coefficient as a primary variable in determining the annual solar heat gains in a building. Further work of developed model could result in building energy need quick evaluation tool in terms of solar heat gai... [more]

Short Term Wind Power Prediction Based on Data Regression and Enhanced Support Vector Machine
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO), forecasting, least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), wind power, wind speed
This paper presents a short-term wind power forecasting model for the next day based on historical marine weather and corresponding wind power output data. Due the large amount of historical marine weather and wind power data, we divided the data into clusters using the data regression (DR) algorithm to get meaningful training data, so as to reduce the number of modeling data and improve the efficiency of computing. The regression model was constructed based on the principle of the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). We carried out wind speed forecasting for one hour and one day and used the correlation between marine wind speed and the corresponding wind power regression model to realize an indirect wind power forecasting model. Proper parameter settings for LSSVM are important to ensure its efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, we used an enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO) to perform the parameter optimization for LSSVM, which not only improved the forecast model avai... [more]

Gel Pills for Downhole Pressure Control during Oil and Gas Well Drilling
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bentonite, gel formation, gel pill, viscous pill
During drilling of petroleum or geothermal wells, unforeseen circumstances occasionally happen that require suspension of the operation. When the drilling fluid is left in a static condition, solid material like barite may settle out of the fluid. Consequently, the induced hydrostatic pressure that the fluid exerts onto the formation will be reduced, possibly leading to collapse of the borehole or influx of liquid or gas. A possible mitigation action is placement of a gel pill. This gel pill should preferably be able to let settled barite rest on top of it and still transmit the hydrostatic pressure to the well bottom. A bentonite-based gel pill is developed, preventing flow of higher density drilling fluid placed above it to bypass the gel pill. Its rheological behavior was characterized prior to functional testing. The designed gel pill develops sufficient gel structure to accommodate the settled barite. The performance of the gel was tested at vertical and 40° inclination from verti... [more]

Method of Improving Lateral Stability by Using Additional Yaw Moment of Semi-Trailer
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coordination, differential braking, hub motor, lateral stability, tractor semi-trailer
The lateral stability control of tractor semi-trailer plays a vital role for enhancing its driving safety, and the distributed electric drive structure of a hub motor creates opportunities and challenges for realising the lateral stability accurately. Based on the dynamics simulation software TruckSim, a nonlinear dynamic tractor semi-trailer model is established, and a MATLAB/Simulink linear three-degree-of-freedom monorail reference model is established. The upper controller adopts fuzzy proportional−integral−derivative control to export active yaw torque values of the tractor and semi-trailer. The lower controller outputs the driving/braking torque of each wheel according to the target wheel driving/braking rules and torque distribution rules. The tractor produce an active yaw torque through conventional differential braking the hub motor is installed on both sides of the semi-trailer, and the active yaw torque is produced by the coordinated control of the driving/braking torque of... Mechanical Cutting Effect of Electrical Steel on the Performance of Induction Motors
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cutting effect, finite element model, induction motor, super premium
This paper investigates the mechanical cutting effect on the performance of induction motors. Numerical modeling of cutting effect is described in this paper. The approach inverts the degradation of the permeability model for inclusion of it into magnetic vector potential formula by Newton method. The effect of cutting on iron losses is implemented in finite element simulation. The simulation results are compared with experimental results of prototype IE4 efficiency induction motors rated at 2.2 kW. One of them was manufactured with annealed electrical steel lamination to highlight the cutting effect on the performance of the motor. The notable effect of cutting was measured in increased stator current; however, negligible differences were found in measured iron losses. The presented model in this paper follows the measurements.

Environmental and Safety Risks Related to Methane Emissions in Underground Coal Mine Closure Processes
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: gas, hazard, methane, mine closure, risk
The closure process of underground coal mines entails specific risks which require a careful liquidation methodology, including the implementation of relevant risk mitigation procedures to identify the key hazards to the environment and humans. As gas represents one of the major risks, it needs to be taken into consideration in the liquidation process. Given its adverse effect on the environment, methane, a greenhouse gas, requires particular attention and may also reach dangerous concentrations in the ground floor areas and basements of buildings as well as in areas where mine closure works are conducted, leading to intoxication, asphyxia or explosions. This paper presents a risk analysis of the methane hazard occurring at the final stage of the closure process of a Polish underground mine. It applies a methane emission model created jointly by the National Institute for the Environment and Industrial Hazards (INERIS) in France and the Central Mining Institute (GIG) in Poland. Techno-Economic Assessment of Different Heat Exchangers for CO2 Capture
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen HYSYS, capture cost, Carbon Capture, Carbon Dioxide, energy cost, heat exchanger, sensitivity, Simulation
We examined the cost implications of selecting six different types of heat exchangers as the lean/rich heat exchanger in an amine-based CO2 capture process. The difference in total capital cost between different capture plant scenarios due to the different costs of the heat exchangers used as the lean/rich heat exchanger, in each case, is in millions of Euros. The gasketed-plate heat exchanger (G-PHE) saves significant space, and it saves considerable costs. Selecting the G-PHE instead of the shell and tube heat exchangers (STHXs) will save €33 million−€39 million in total capital cost (CAPEX), depending on the type of STHX. About €43 million and €2 million in total installed costs (CAPEX) can be saved if the G-PHE is selected instead of the finned double-pipe heat exchanger (FDP-HX) or welded-plate heat exchanger, respectively. The savings in total annual cost is also in millions of Euros/year. Capture costs of €5/tCO2−€6/tCO2 can be saved by replacing conventional STHXs with the G-PH... [more]

Research on Performance Evaluation of Tidal Energy Turbine under Variable Velocity
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capture power, evaluation flow velocity, periodic time-varying, tidal current energy, turbine
Aiming at the performance evaluation problem of tidal energy turbines in the application of periodic time-varying flow velocity, with the goal of maximizing the efficiency of energy harvesting in practical applications, an evaluation system combining the characteristics of flow velocity changes in practical applications is proposed. After long-term monitoring of tidal current flow velocity in the applied sea area, the actual measured tidal current periodic flow velocity is divided into several flow velocity segments by using statistical segmentation, and the evaluation flow velocity of each flow velocity segment and its time proportion in the tidal current cycle are obtained. A test device with constant torque regulation is built, and capture power tests of different torque loads are carried out under each evaluation flow rate. After comparison, the maximum captured power at each evaluation flow rate is determined. We calculate the weight based on the time proportion of each evaluation... [more]

The Exploitation of Low-Temperature Hot Water Boiler Sources with High-Temperature Heat Pump Integration
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: district heating, economic analysis, high-temperature heat pumps, hot water boilers, renewable energy sources
The article presents an original and innovative technical solution for the exploitation of low-temperature excess heat from hot water boilers that use gas or liquid fuel for the needs of high-temperature heating in buildings or in industry. The primary fuel efficiency used for hot water boilers can be significantly increased by utilizing the excess low-temperature heat of flue gases that are discharged into the environment and thus also reduce CO2 emissions. Hot water systems usually operate at higher temperatures of the heating water, which is transported to the heat consumer via supply pipe, and the cooled heating water is returned to the hot water boiler via the return pipe. For the excess low-temperature heat exploitation of the flue gases from hot water boiler, it is necessary to install a condenser in the flue gas discharge pipe, where condensation of water vapour present in the flue gas heats water or a mixture of water and glycol. The heating water, which is cooled and returned... [more]

Low Power QC-LDPC Decoder Based on Token Ring Architecture
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed control system, FPGA, LDPC, Min-Sum, partially-parallel decoder, QC-LDPC, token ring
The article presents an implementation of a low power Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) decoder in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. The proposed solution is oriented to a reduction in dynamic energy consumption. The key research concepts present an effective technology mapping of a QC-LDPC decoder to an LUT-based FPGA with many limitations. The proposed decoder architecture uses a distributed control system and a Token Ring processing scheme. This idea helps limit the clock skew problem and is oriented to clock gating, a well-established concept for power optimization. Then the clock gating of the decoder building blocks allows for a significant reduction in energy consumption without deterioration in other parameters of the decoder, particularly its error correction performance. We also provide experimental results for decoder implementations with different QC-LDPC codes, indicating important characteristics of the code parity check matrix, for which an ene... [more]

Effect of Rheological Properties of Aqueous Solution of Na-CMC on Spray Angle for Conical Pressure-Swirl Atomizers
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: atomization, construction of atomizer, rheology, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, spray angle
Aerosol is a multiphase system, created as a result of the dispersion of a liquid in a gaseous medium. The atomized liquids are most often water and fuel; however, they can be any other substance. Even a small addition of a substance that changes the rheological properties (i.e., the nature of the flow) can change the properties of the resulting aerosol. The most important parameters that characterize the aerosol are the outflow rate, the droplet diameter, the spray spectrum, and the spray angle. The latter is important when selecting atomizers, especially those working in groups on the sprayer boom. The spray angle is an important parameter of the atomization process, providing a great deal of information about the quality of the spray. This study presents the results of rheological tests and the atomization of aqueous solutions with varying concentrations of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC). We found that the spray angle decreased with increasing Na-CMC concentration in the sol... [more]

Multitask Support Vector Regression for Solar and Wind Energy Prediction
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multi-task learning, photovoltaic energy, support vector regression, wind energy
Given the impact of renewable sources in the overall energy production, accurate predictions are becoming essential, with machine learning becoming a very important tool in this context. In many situations, the prediction problem can be divided into several tasks, more or less related between them but each with its own particularities. Multitask learning (MTL) aims to exploit this structure, training several models at the same time to improve on the results achievable either by a common model or by task-specific models. In this paper, we show how an MTL approach based on support vector regression can be applied to the prediction of photovoltaic and wind energy, problems where tasks can be defined according to different criteria. As shown experimentally with three different datasets, the MTL approach clearly outperforms the results of the common and specific models for photovoltaic energy, and are at the very least quite competitive for wind energy.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automatic surveillance, Machine Learning, oil and gas reservoir development and management
Predictive analysis of the reservoir surveillance data is crucial for the high-efficiency management of oil and gas reservoirs. Here we introduce a new approach to reservoir surveillance that uses the machine learning tree boosting method to forecast production data. In this method, the prediction target is the decline rate of oil production at a given time for one well in the low-permeability carbonate reservoir. The input data to train the model includes reservoir production data (e.g., oil rate, water cut, gas oil ratio (GOR)) and reservoir operation data (e.g., history of choke size and shut-down activity) of 91 producers in this reservoir for the last 20 years. The tree boosting algorithm aims to quantitatively uncover the complicated hidden patterns between the target prediction parameter and other monitored data of a high variety, through state-of-the-art automatic classification and multiple linear regression algorithms. MW Synthesis of ZIF-7. The Effect of Solvent on Particle Size and Hydrogen Sorption Properties
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen storage, microwave synthesis, ZIF-7
We report here fast (15 min) microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework material (ZIF-7). We have optimized solvent composition to achieve high porosity and hydrogen capacity and narrow particle size distribution. It was shown that synthesis in N,N-diethylformamide (DEF) results in a layered ZIF-7 III phase, while N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent leads to a pure ZIF-7 phase in microwave conditions. A mixture of toluene with DMF allows the production of pure ZIF-7 material only with the triethylamine additive. Obtained materials were comprehensively characterized. We have pointed out that both X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy could be used for the identification of ZIF-7 or ZIF-7 III phases. Although samples obtained in DMF, and in a mixture of DMF, toluene, and triethylamine were assigned to the pure ZIF-7 phase, solvent composition significantly affected the size of particles in the material and nitrogen and hydrogen adsorption process... Keywords: cross laminated timber (CLT), energy consumption, operative temperature, overheating phenomenon, residential buildings
As the climate changed in recent years, an increase in summer indoor temperatures in severe cold and cold regions of China has started to affect thermal comfort. However, the local design standard for energy efficiency does not recognize this phenomenon. This paper reports the potential overheating phenomenon in residential buildings and examines the rationale for the current thermal designs adopted in severe cold and cold regions of China. In this study, the two most commonly used building materials, reinforced concrete (RC) and cross laminated timber (CLT), are used separately in the design of an 18-story residential building envelope located in six different cities in the severe cold and cold regions. The energy consumption and indoor operative temperatures during the operation of these buildings are simulated using Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment (IES VE). Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacity, coefficient of performance, design considerations, energy systems, magnetocaloric effect, mathematical modelling, refrigeration
A magnetic refrigeration system has the potential to alternate the compression system with respect to environmental compatibility. Refrigeration systems currently operate on the basis of the expansion and compression processes, while active magnetic refrigeration systems operate based on the magnetocaloric effect. In this study, a single layer of Gd was used as the magnetocaloric material for six-packed-sphere regenerators. A one-dimensional numerical model was utilized to simulate the magnetic refrigeration system and determine the optimum parameters. The optimum mass flow rate and maximum cooling capacity at frequency of 4 Hz are 3 L·min−1 and 580 W, respectively. The results show that the maximum pressure drop increased by 1400 W at a frequency of 4 Hz and mass flow rate of 5 L·min−1. In this study, we consider the refrigeration system in terms of the design considerations, conduct a parametric study, and determine the effect of various parameters on the performance of the system.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Japan, offshore wind, offshore wind potential, regional analysis
This study presents an approach for estimating the offshore wind potential of Japan. Bathymetry data (1 km mesh) and near shore wind speed data of the year 2018 were used to assess the potential. A turbine with a peak power of 10.6 MW was employed for the analysis. The potential was calculated for multiple regions. These regions are based on the service areas of the major electricity supply companies in Japan. Overall, the results show that Japan has the potential to produce up to 32,028 PJ electricity per year. The electricity demand of 2018 amounts to 3231 PJ. The potential is therefore large enough to cover Japan’s electricity needs ten-times over. The capacity that could theoretically be installed amounts to 2720 GW, which is a multiple of the current worldwide installed capacity of 29.1 GW (2019). In addition to the huge potential, the regional assessment shows that the regions vary greatly in their potential; of all the considered regions, Hokkaido and Kyushu have the highest ove... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARDL, COVID-19, crude oil, energy shock, Natural Gas
The COVID-19 pandemic storm has struck the world economies and energy markets with extreme strength. The goal of our study is to assess how the pandemic has influenced oil and gas prices, using energy market reactions in the United States and Japan. To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 cases on the crude oil and natural gas markets, we applied the Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) approach to the number of the US and Japanese COVID-19 cases and energy prices. Our study period is from 21 January 2020 to 2 June 2020, and uses the latest data available at the time of model calibration and captures the so-called “first pandemic wave”. In the US, the COVID-19 pandemic had a statistically negative impact on the crude oil price while it positively affected the gas price. In Japan, this negative impact was only apparent in the crude oil market with a two-day lag. Possible explanations of the results may include differences in pandemic development in the US and Japan, and the diverse... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: extension theory, fault-tolerant control, line current spectrum feature, smart fault diagnosis, three-level neutral-point clamped inverters
This paper presents an extension theory-based assessment method to perform fault diagnosis for inverters in motor driving systems. First, a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) inverter is created using the PSIM software package to simulate faults for any power transistor in the NPC-type inverter. Fast Fourier transformation is used to transform the line current signals in the time domain into a spectrum in the frequency domain for analysis of the corresponding spectrum of features of the inverter for faults with different power transistors. Then, the relationships between fault types and specific spectra are established as characteristics for the extension assessment method, which is then used to create a smart fault diagnosis system for inverters. Fault-tolerant control (FTC) is used here when the rated output of a faulty inverter is decreased in order to maintain balanced output in three phases by changing the framework of the transistor connection. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compensation for nonactive current, power distribution, power quality, reverse power flow, UPQC, voltage regulation
This paper proposes a new control method for a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This method is based on the load equivalent conductance approach, originally proposed by Fryze. It can be useful not only for compensation for nonactive current and for improving voltage quality, but it also allows one to perform some unconventional functions. This control method can be performed by extending the orthodox notion of ‘static’ load equivalent conductance into a time-variable signal. It may be used to characterize energy changes in the whole UPQC-and-load circuitry. The UPQC can regulate energy flow between all sources and loads being under compensation. They may be located as well for UPQC’s AC-side as DC-side. System works properly even if they switch their activity to work either as loads or generators. The UPQC can operate also as a buffer, which can store/share the in-load generated energy amongst other loads, or it can transmit this energy to the source. Therefore, in addition to... [more]
