Application of an Artificial Neural Network for Detecting, Classifying, and Making Decisions about Asymmetric Short Circuits in a Synchronous Generator
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: asymmetric mode, classification, decision-making, neural network, short circuit, synchronous generator
Fast and accurate detection of emerging faults in synchronous generators, which have found wide application in power and transport systems, contributes to ensuring reliable operation of the entire system. This article presents a new approach to making accurate decisions on the continuation of the operation of damaged generators in accordance with the requirements of IEEE standards. The necessity of limiting the duration of operation of the generator in conditions of asymmetric short circuits in the stator windings is substantiated. The authors of the article, based on an artificial neural network in the Matlab software environment, have developed a model for detecting, classifying, and making quick and accurate decisions about the operation of the generator in the event of asymmetric short circuits in the stator windings of the generator. This makes it possible to simulate the operation of the generator at various parameters. Prior to training the neural network, the database formed by... [more]

Precision and Accuracy of Pulse Propagation Velocity Measurement in Power Cables
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable diagnostics, measurement accuracy, partial discharge, power cables, pulse propagation, time-domain reflectometry
The partial discharge (PD) measurement is an important method used in determining the condition of medium- and high-voltage cable insulation. Considering the propagation velocity of PD signals in power cables is necessary for determining the location of PD defects. However, the determination of velocity is not straightforward due to propagation-related attenuation and dispersion, which distorts the PD pulse waveform. This introduces a degree of uncertainty into the pulse velocity as well as the PD source locations determined based on that velocity, which is usually considered to be of constant value in PD analysis. This paper investigates the accuracy of the pulse propagation velocity measurement in power cables. Tests were performed on a medium voltage power cable in a laboratory setting using two sets of PD-specific measurement equipment: a high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) and an IEC 60270-compliant conventional measurement system. The propagation velocities and their statis... [more]

Advanced Torque Ripple Minimization of Synchronous Reluctance Machine for Electric Vehicle Application
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric vehicle, field-oriented control, maximum torque per ampere, optimal current calculation, sliding mode control, synchronous reluctance machine, torque ripple minimization
The electric machine and the control system determine the performance of the electric vehicle drivetrain. Unlike rare-earth magnet machines such as permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs), synchronous reluctance machines(SynRMs) are manufactured without permanent magnets. This allows them to be used as an alternative to rare-earth magnet machines. However, one of the main drawbacks of this machine is its high torque ripple, which generates significant acoustic noise. The most typical method for reducing this torque ripple is to employ an optimized structural design or a customized control technique. The objective of this paper is the use of a control approach to minimize the torque ripple effects issue in the SynRM. This work is performed in two steps: Initially, the reference current calculation bloc is modified to reduce the torque ripple of the machine. A method for calculating the optimal reference currents based on the stator joule loss is proposed. The proposed method is co... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), flow direction, gas utilization, internal manifold, molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs), operating temperature, reforming area, S/C ratio
Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) use molten carbonate as an electrolyte. MCFCs operate at high temperatures and have the advantage of using methane as a fuel because they can use nickel-based catalysts. We analyzed the performance of an internal manifold-type MCFC, according to operating conditions, using computational fluid dynamics. Different conditions were used for the external and internal reforming-type MCFCs. Flow directions, gas utilization, and operating temperatures were used as the conditions for the external reforming-type MCFCs. The S/C ratio and reforming area were used as the conditions for internal reforming-type MCFCs. A simulation model was developed, considering gas transfer, reforming reaction, and heat transfer. The simulation results of external reforming-type MCFCs showed similar pressure drops in all flow directions. As the gas utilization decreased, the temperature decreased, but the performance increased. The performance improved with increasing operating t... [more]

The Mechanism of Hot Spots Caused by Avalanche Breakdown in Gallium-Doped PERC Solar Cells
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: avalanche breakdown, Ga-doping, hot spot, PERC solar cell
Gallium-doped p-type passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC) solar cells, which eliminate light-induced degradation (LID) and reduce the impact of light- and elevated-temperature-induced degradation (LeTID), have completely replaced boron-doped p-type PERC cells. However, in previous experiments, we found hot spots in the center of gallium-doped PERC solar cells. In this study, it was found that gallium-doped PERC cells had uneven resistivity, which caused hot spots brought about by the avalanche breakdown of PN junctions. There were significant hot spots in the center of the tested cells, with an average resistivity of 0.4−0.5 Ωcm and nonuniformity greater than 30%, or at an average resistivity of 0.5−0.6 Ωcm with nonuniformity greater than 40%. In this paper we describe and study in detail hot spots triggered by the uneven resistivity of gallium-doped cells and analyze the causes and related influencing factors, thereby providing guidance and a reference for the improvement of the... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, home energy management, load scheduling, user comfort
This paper proposes a home energy management system able to achieve optimized load scheduling for the operation of appliances within a given household. The system, based on the genetic algorithm, provides recommendations for the user to improve the way the energy needs of the home are handled. These recommendations not only take into account the dynamic pricing of electricity, but also the optimization for solar energy usage as well as user comfort. Historical data regarding the times at which the appliances have been used is leveraged through a statistical method to integrate the user’s preference into the algorithm. Based on real life appliance consumption data collected from a household in Morocco, three scenarios are established to assess the performance of the proposed system with each scenario having different parameters. Running the scenarios on the developed MATLAB script shows a cost saving of up to 63.48% as compared to a base scenario for a specific day. These results demons... [more]

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Layout Optimization
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetric wakes, layout optimization, vertical axis wind turbines, wind farm
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) are not mature enough yet for offshore wind farms, but they offer benefits compared to conventional Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs). Higher power densities, reduced wakes, lower center of mass, and different power and thrust curves make VAWTs an interesting option to complement existing wind farms. The optimization of wind farm layouts—finding the optimal positions of wind turbines in a park—has proven crucial to extract more energy from conventional wind farms. In this study, we build an optimizer for VAWTs that can consider arbitrarily shaped layouts as well as obstacles in the area. We adapt a recent model for the wakes of VAWTs considering a Troposkien design. We can then model and optimize a large VAWT park in a real wind scenario and assess for the first time its performance operating Troposkien VAWTs. In addition, we present a novel model for wind farm optimization that considers the clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of turbines. T... [more]

Physical activity involves movements, which can be considered sources of kinetic energy, that are expected to be important during sports activities. Several transducers can transform this energy into electrical energy. Piezoelectric generators are widely used, and several applications highlight their relevance. However, the generated output power is location dependent, and the analysis of the placement of this kind of generator can be challenging. In order to assess the availability of kinetic energy sources, an acceleration data analysis method is presented. Temporal and harvester model-based studies, using data from 17 inertial measurement units (IMUs) located across the whole human body, were conducted. Electric Vehicles Charging Using Photovoltaic Energy Surplus: A Framework Based on Blockchain
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain, business model, electric vehicles, intelligent management systems, photovoltaic systems
In the present day, it is crucial for individuals and companies to reduce their carbon footprints in a society more self-conscious about climate change and other environmental issues. In this sense, public and private institutions are investing in photovoltaic (PV) systems to produce clean energy for self-consumption. Nevertheless, an essential part of this energy is wasted due to lower consumption during non-business periods. This work proposes a novel framework that uses solar-generated energy surplus to charge external electric vehicles (EVs), creating new business opportunities. Furthermore, this paper introduces a novel marketplace platform based on blockchain technology to allow energy trading between institutions and EV owners. Since the energy provided to charge the EV comes from distributed PV generation, the energy’s selling price can be more attractive than the one offered by the retailers—meaning economic gains for the institutions and savings for the users. April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: buildings, contact matrix, experimental test, graph theory, lumped parameters, mathematical model, scale-reduced model, thermal zones
Asymmetric thermal zones or even non-rectangular structures are common in residential buildings. These types of structures are not easy to model with specialized programs, and it is difficult to know the heat flows and the relationships between the different variables. This paper presents a methodology for modeling structures with multiple thermal zones using the graph theory arrangement. The methodology allows for generating a mathematical model using all the walls of each thermal zone. The modeling method uses the lumped parameter technique with a structure of two resistors and two capacitors for each thermal zone. The walls and internal surfaces of each zone define the thermal resistances, and the elements for the network structure are created by reducing resistances. The structure selected as a case study is similar to a residential apartment, which demonstrates the possibility of modeling complex and non-traditional structures.
