Identification Efficiency in Dynamic UHF RFID Anticollision Systems with Textile Electronic Tags
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: anticollision protocol, dynamic RFID systems, identification efficiency, RFIDtex systems, textronic transponder
The study on the numerical model of communication processes implemented in RFID systems, in which textile electronic (RFIDtex) tags are used, is presented in the paper. The efficiency analysis covers the case of dynamic identification of a large amount of RFIDtex tags that are located in a spatial interrogation zone of a typical Internet of Textile Things (IoTT) application. Simulations carried out in order to verify the efficiency of the identification process are confirmed by measurements on the dedicated laboratory stand. Since the application of the experiment is located in the area of a maintenance-free store to detect and distinguish textile products, particular attention is paid to reconstruction of conditions and object arrangements that are typical for this type of space. The model and experiment are developed on the basis of RFIDtex transponders that are restricted under the patent claim PL231291. The obtained results prove that within the scope of the assumed number of RFIDt... [more]

A Future with Machine Learning: Review of Condition Assessment of Structures and Mechanical Systems in Nuclear Facilities
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: advanced reactors, Artificial Intelligence, concrete, condition assessment, damage detection, data management, deep learning, digital twin, nuclear piping, signal processing
The nuclear industry is exploring applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including autonomous control and management of reactors and components. A condition assessment framework that utilizes AI and sensor data is an important part of such an autonomous control system. A nuclear power plant has various structures, systems, and components (SSCs) such as piping-equipment that carries coolant to the reactor. Piping systems can degrade over time because of flow-accelerated corrosion and erosion. Any cracks and leakages can cause loss of coolant accident (LOCA). The current industry standards for conducting maintenance of vital SSCs can be time and cost-intensive. AI can play a greater role in the condition assessment and can be extended to recognize concrete degradation (chloride-induced damage and alkali−silica reaction) before cracks develop. This paper reviews developments in condition assessment and AI applications of structural and mechanical systems. The applicability of exist... [more]

The Influence of Heat Transfer Coefficient α of Insulating Liquids on Power Transformer Cooling Systems
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, insulating liquid, power transformers, temperature distribution
The power transformer plays an important role in electric power systems. One of the conditions for the proper operation of the transformer is to ensure a sufficiently low temperature. This condition can be met if the heat exchange is effective. Heat transfer depends, among other things, on the electrically insulating liquid. The thermal property describing the ability of a liquid to transfer heat is the heat transfer coefficient α. At the design stage of the transformers, it is most often assumed that the value of the α coefficient is constant and equal to 100 W·m−2·K−1. Such simplifications can lead to the improper design of the transformer since this factor depends on many factors. The article presents the results of research on the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient α on the type of electrical insulation liquid, the thermal load of the cooled surface, and the length of the heating element. Four types of electrical insulating liquids were considered: mineral oil, synthetic e... [more]

Analysis of Failure Propagation in Cyber-Physical Power Systems Based on an Epidemic Model
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cooperation propagation, cyber-physical power system, epidemic model, interdependent network, node protection
From the perspective of propagation dynamics in complex networks, failure propagation in cyber-physical power systems is analogous to the spread of diseases; subsequently, the cyber nodes and power nodes are regarded as individuals in each of their groups. In this study, a two-layer interdependent network model of the cyber-physical power system is proposed, where each subnetwork adopts the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic-spreading model. On this basis, we construct a failure cooperation propagation model of cyber-physical power systems. Furthermore, we introduce the node protection mechanism to ensure the normal operation of key nodes. The generated scale-free cyber network and IEEE118-bus power system are used for simulation to analyze the influence of the coupling effect between them on the final failure scale.

Characterization of the Temperature Profile near Contact Lines of an Evaporating Sessile Drop
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bénard-Marangoni instability, drop evaporation, microscopic fluorescence-based thermometry, temperature measurement
Evaporation of a sessile drop is ubiquitous in nature and has many industrial applications. Despite extensive studies over recent decades, a critical issue, i.e., how temperature varies near contact lines, remains elusive. In this work, we report to date the first direct experimental measurement showing the microscopic temperature distribution near contact lines of an evaporating pinned sessile drop. Using a fluorescence-based thermometry, we find that the temperature at the free interface near contact lines varies drastically along the radial direction, engendering a concentric fringe pattern that evolves over the evaporation lifespan. The formation of such fringe patterns is attributed to a combined mechanism of locally enhanced evaporative cooling at the drop edge and the development of interfacial convective vortices due to Bénard-Marangoni instability. We also study the evaporation dynamics at different initial contact angles and find that the characteristics of this fringe patter... [more]

Effects of Numerical Schemes of Contact Angle on Simulating Condensation Heat Transfer in a Subcooled Microcavity by Pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann Model
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condensation, contact angle, fluid density variation near wall, ghost fluid layer, lattice Boltzmann method
Various numerical schemes of contact angle are widely used in pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model to simulate substrate contact angle in condensation. In this study, effects of numerical schemes of contact angle on condensation nucleation and heat transfer simulation are clarified for the first time. The three numerical schemes are pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme, pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme with a ghost fluid layer constructed on the substrate with weighted average density of surrounding fluid nodes, and the geometric formulation scheme. It is found that the subcooling condition destabilizes algorithm of pseudopotential-based contact angle scheme. However, with a ghost fluid layer constructed on the substrate or using geometric formulation scheme, the algorithm becomes stable. The subcooling condition also decreases the simulated contact angle magnitude compared with that under an isothermal condition. The fluid density variation near a microcavity wall s... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: extinction limit, Hydrogen, ignition delay times, laminar burning velocity, methane, rapid compression machine
In this work, the influence of H2 addition on the auto-ignition and combustion properties of CH4 is investigated experimentally and numerically. Experimental ignition delay times (IDT) are compared with simulations and laminar burning velocities (LBVs), and extinction limits/extinction strain rates (ESRs) are compared with data from the literature. A wide variety of literature data are collected and reviewed, and experimental data points are extracted for IDT, LBV and ESR. The results are used for the validation of existing reaction mechanisms. The reaction mechanisms and models used are able to reproduce the influence of H2 addition to CH4 (e.g., shortening IDTs, increasing ESRs and increasing LBVs). IDTs are investigated in a range from 6 to 15 bar and temperatures from 929 to 1165 K with H2 addition from 10 to 100 mol%. We show that LBV and ESR are predicted in a wide range by the numerical simulations. Moreover, the numerical simulations using detailed Aramco Mech 3.0 (581 species)... [more]

Decoupling of Electricity Consumption Efficiency, Environmental Degradation and Economic Growth: An Empirical Analysis
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, China, decoupling analysis (DA), economic growth, electricity consumption
The present study investigates electricity consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, and economic growth decoupling using data from 1971 to 2020 for the economy of China. The study uses decoupling analysis (DA) as the prime methodology for analysis. Furthermore, the findings put forward a significant contribution to an economic picture of the economy of China and a sizeable addition to related research and findings under the assigned issues discussed in the study. The study’s main contribution is to decouple electricity consumption from the gross domestic product (GDP), which is rare in the existing literature in the context of China. Moreover, the study shows the decoupling of environment affects electricity consumption, and GDP growth. The DA model shows that electricity consumption is the main driving force enhancing economic growth. However, industrialization has increased greenhouse gases, global warming, and climate change due to production and consumption. China’s economy uses... [more]

Standard Load Profiles for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Germany Based on Representative, Empirical Data
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, empirical data analysis, power curve, public charging station, standard load profile
Electric vehicles are becoming dominant in the global automobile market due to their better environmental friendliness compared to internal combustion vehicles. An adequate network of public charging stations is required to fulfil the fast charging demands of EV users. Knowing the shape and amplitude of their power curves is essential for power purchase planning and grid capacity sizing. Based on a large-scale empirical and representative dataset, this paper creates standard load profiles for various power levels, station sizes, and operating environments. It is found that the average power per charge point increases with rated station power, particularly for a rated power above 100 kW, and decreases with the number of charge points per station for AC chargers. For AC chargers, it is revealed how the shape of the power curve largely depends on the environment of a station, with urban settings experiencing the highest average power of 0.71 kW on average leading to an annual energy sale... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: city logistics, Customer as a Service Provider (CaaSP), Energy Efficiency, logistics service providers, low-emissions transport, urban deliveries
Smart cities need energy-efficient and low-emission transportation for people and goods. Most studies focus on sustainable urban-transportation systems for passengers. Freight transportation in cities has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to greenhouse gases emissions and negative externalities, such as traffic congestion. The purpose of this paper is to identify through a systematic literature review which innovations (hardware and software) applied by logistics service providers (LSPs) in sustainable urban freight (SUF) are suitable to support the transition to energy-efficient smart cities. We propose to classify the existing innovations in last-mile delivery for SUF into categories: (1) urban freight consolidation and/or trans-shipment; (2) the Consumer as a Service Provider (CaaSP); (3) choice of transportation modes. We introduce the concept of CaaSP as an innovative solution in last-mile delivery (LMD), where customers take over some transport operati... [more]

Optimization of High-Temperature Electrolysis System for Hydrogen Production Considering High-Temperature Degradation
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-temperature degradation, high-temperature steam electrolysis, hydrogen production efficiency, Optimization, solid oxide electrolysis cell
Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) have great application prospects because of their excellent performance, but the long-term applications of the stacks are restricted by the structural degradation under the high-temperature conditions. Therefore, an SOEC degradation model is developed and embedded in a process model of the high-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) system to investigate the influence of the stack degradation at the system level. The sensitivity analysis and optimization were carried out to study the influence factors of the stack degradation and system hydrogen production efficiency and search for the optimal operating conditions to improve the hydrogen production efficiency and mitigate the stack degradation. The analysis results show that the high temperature and large current density can accelerate the stack degradation but improve the hydrogen production efficiency, while the high temperature gradually becomes unfavorable in the late stage. Numerical Modelling of Steam Superheaters in Supercritical Boilers
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: live steam superheater, mathematical model, pressure distribution, supercritical steam boiler, wall temperature distribution
This paper presents a numerical model of a four-pass supercritical steam superheater with a complex flow system. The specific heat of steam is a function of temperature and pressure, and the specific heat of flue gas is a function of temperature. Pressure and temperature changes along the length of the tubes were also determined. The modified Churchill equation was used to calculate the steam-side friction factor of Darcy−Weisbach. The flue gas temperature variations behind the individual superheater tube rows were calculated. The steam and wall temperature distributions were determined in each tube row along its length. Knowing the temperature of the tube walls and the steam along the flow direction enables the selection of the correct steel grade for the tubes. Thanks to this advantage of the proposed method, the investment can be reduced in superheater construction without the danger of overheating the tube material. The results of the superheater simulation were compared with the r... [more]

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agent-based model, collaborating farms, farmer-to-farmer exchange, food supply chain, food–energy–water nexus, micro supply chain, Optimization, transitional agriculture, urban farms
An agent-based modeling framework is developed and employed to replicate the interactions among urban farms. The objectives are to efficiently manage an urban farm’s food, energy, and water resources, decrease food waste, and increase the food availability for the local community. A case study of eleven farms was investigated in Vancouver, Canada to study the linkages between the resources in the urban food, energy, and water nexus. Each urban farm in the simulation belonged to a community microgrid generating electricity from solar and wind. The local farms aimed to provide fresh produce for their respective local communities. However, at some points, they lacked supply, and at other points, there was excess supply, leading to food waste. Food waste can be converted into fertilizers or bioenergy. However, an alternative solution must be employed due to the natural resources required for production, efficiently managing resources, and adhering to sustainability guidelines. In this pape... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: formic acid, hydrogen carrier, hydrogen refueling station, liquefied hydrogen, quantitative risk assessment
To realize a hydrogen economy, many studies are being conducted regarding the development and analysis of hydrogen carriers. Recently, formic acid has been receiving attention as a potential hydrogen carrier due to its high volumetric energy density and relatively safe characteristics. However, hydrogen refueling systems using formic acid are very different from conventional hydrogen refueling stations, and quantitative risks assessments need to be conducted to verify their safe usage. In this study, a comparative safety analysis of a formic acid hydrogen refueling station (FAHRS) and a gaseous hydrogen refueling station (GHRS) was conducted. Since there is no FAHRS under operation, a process simulation model was developed and integrated with quantitative risk assessment techniques to perform safety analysis. Results of the analysis show that the FAHRS poses less risk than the GHRS, where the vapor cloud explosion occurring in the buffer tank is of greatest consequence. A GHRS poses a... [more]

Keywords: community policy, Energy Efficiency, public procurement, sustainable development
The public procurement system in Poland remains highly centralized, although thanks to European Community directives, it is part of European law. Therefore, it has established procedures for sustainable public procurement, including so-called green public procurement. In addition to the Public Procurement Law of 11 September 2019, other provisions introducing specific instruments (e.g., energy labels, environmental labels) should be taken into consideration, as such provisions make it easier for contracting authorities to take environmental aspects into account in tender procedures. Bearing in mind the existing legal regulations, this article features a diagnosis of the degree of use of measures to improve energy efficiency in public procurement procedures and models activities related to improving this situation. For this purpose, surveys were conducted for 120 entities applying the provisions of the Public Procurement Law. Taking into consideration the results obtained in the survey,... [more]

A Transformerless Enhanced-Boost Quasi-Z-Source Inverter with Low Input Current Ripple for Stand-Alone RES-Based Systems
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC–DC boost converter, grid connection, inverter, photovoltaic (PV) cell, quasi Z-source, switched-inductor cell
The main drawback of DC-source-based renewable energy sources (RESs), such as photovoltaic (PV) panels or fuel cells (FCs), is that the voltage generated by a panel or cell is less than the required voltage for connection to a DC−AC inverter for grid applications. In this paper, a single-switched DC−DC boost converter equipped with a quasi-impedance source inverter (QZSI) with a modified switching model is proposed to increase the output voltage of these RESs and convert it to a fixed AC grid voltage for loads. By changing the position of the inductor in a classic step-up converter and using a switched-inductor block, the input current ripple is significantly decreased, and the reliability and long-life of the input sources are increased, which is the main contribution of this work. The quality of the generated AC voltage and the low amount of total harmonic distortion (THD) in the projected topology are significant, and no overshoot and undershoot have been reported for both output vo... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airborne wind energy (AWE), multi-spring dynamic model, optimisation design, rotary kite turbine, spring-disc dynamic model, steady-state TRPT model, system analysis, tensile rotary power transmission (TRPT), tether drag model
A unique rotary kite turbine designed with tensile rotary power transmission (TRPT) is introduced in this work. Power extraction, power transmission and the ground station are modelled in a modular framework. The TRPT system is the key component of power transmission, for which three models with different levels of complexity are proposed. The first representation is based on the stationary state of the system, in which the external and internal torques of a TRPT section are in equilibrium, referred to as the steady-state TRPT model. The second representation is a simplified spring-disc model for dynamic TRPT, and the third one is a multi-spring model with higher degrees of freedom and more flexibility in describing TRPT dynamics. To assess the torque loss on TRPT, a simple tether drag model is written for the steady-state TRPT, followed by an improved tether drag model for the dynamic TRPT. This modular framework allows for multiple versions of the rotor, tether aerodynamics and TRPT... [more]

Stochastic Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch of Load-Following and Contingency Reserves Ancillary Service Using a Grid-Connected Microgrid during Uncertainty
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: contingency, load-following, multiperiod, security-constrained, stochastic, uncertainty
In the context of the growing penetration of renewable power sources in power systems causing probabilistic contingency conditions, a suitable economic dispatch model is decisively needed. There is a lack of research in the field of probabilistic mathematical formulation considering the uncertainties due to the stochastic nature of renewables and contingency occurrence, as it is a very complex problem to be solved. The most appropriate model is the stochastic security-constrained economic dispatch (SSCED) model for optimized economic dispatch decisions during uncertainty. However, because of its complexity, it is rarely employed. This paper attempts to solve the complex SSCED problem in the presence of the uncertainty of resources and probabilistic contingency conditions, which is a novel effort in this regard. The SSCED is carried out over multiple periods to provide the load-following or contingency reserves. In the proposed SSCED, the uncertainty problem is addressed by modeling the... [more]

The performance of modern, new generation-armored vehicles would greatly benefit from overall engineering, optimization, and integration techniques of advanced diesel engines-electrified transmissions. Modern axial flux electric motors and controllers are perfectly able to replace the classical automatic gearbox and complex steering system of traditional Main Battle Tanks. The rapid development of photovoltaic technology provides more possibilities for the efficient application of solar energy in buildings. This research proposed a phase change material (PCM) heat storage wall system with a “four-layer” structure. A New Bearing Fault Detection Strategy Based on Combined Modes Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition, KMAD, and an Enhanced Deconvolution Process
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: combined modes ensemble empirical mode decomposition, enhanced minimum entropy deconvolution, Fault Detection, KMAD indicator, rolling element bearing faults, three-sigma rule
In bearing fault diagnosis, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is a reliable technique for treating rolling bearing vibration signals by dividing them into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Traditional methods used in EEMD consist of identifying IMFs containing the fault information and reconstructing them. However, an incorrect selection can result in the loss of useful IMFs or the addition of unnecessary ones. To overcome this drawback, this paper presents a novel method called combined modes ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CMEEMD) to directly obtain a combination of useful IMFs containing fault information. This is without needing to pass through the processes of IMF selection and reconstruction, as well as guaranteeing that no defect information is lost. Owing to the small signal-to-noise ratio, this makes it difficult to determine the fault information of a rolling bearing at the early stage. Therefore, improving noise reduction is an essential procedure for detect... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airborne wind energy, dynamic relaxation, fluid-structure interaction, ram-air kite, SkySails Power, virtual wind tunnel
Similar to parafoils, ram-air kites are flexible membrane wings inflated by the apparent wind and supported by a bridle line system. A major challenge in estimating the performance of these wings using a computer model is the strong coupling between the airflow around the wing and the deformation of the membrane structure. In this paper, we introduce a staggered coupling scheme combining a structural finite element solver using a dynamic relaxation technique with a potential flow solver. The developed method proved numerically stable for determining the equilibrium shape of the wing under aerodynamic load and is thus suitable for performance measurement and load estimation. The method was validated with flight data provided by SkySails Power. Measured forces on the tether and steering belt of the robotic kite control pod showed good resemblance with the simulation results.
