Jianjun Cai, Lingxia Zhu, Qiuxia Wei, Da Huang, Ming Luo, Xingying Tang
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying kinetics, Fick’s second law of diffusion, initial moisture content, single biomass particle
Drying has been widely studied as a necessary process in biomass utilization. The steam diffusion law plays an important role in drying kinetics. The drying kinetics of a single biomass particle using Fick’s second law of diffusion was studied in this paper. A parabolic relationship appeared between the critical moisture content and temperature. The critical moisture content decreased with the increase in drying temperature and the initial moisture content. The drying temperature had a significant effect on the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the dramatically falling period of the biomass drying process. However, it was affected by the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the slowly falling period. The initial moisture caused the opposite effect during the different periods. The normalized biomass moisture content generally increased with the increase in drying temperature, and decreased with the increase in initial moisture conten... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: droplets, hydrodynamics, liquid marbles, manipulation, open microfluidics
Microfluidics, as one of the most valuable analytical technologies of this century, has played an important role in various fields. Particularly, out-of-channel microfluidics, often referred to as open microfluidics (OMF) has recently drawn wide research attention among scholars for its great potential in convenient manual intervention. Much recent research has been geared toward bare droplets and particle-armed droplets (namely liquid marbles, LMs), which could serve as independent systems in OMF. Their versatile applications include but are not limited to nanomaterials preparation, energy harvesting, cell culture and environment monitoring. These applications are mainly attributed to the excellent independence, low reagent consumption and short reaction time of separate droplets and LMs. In addition, more operation features, such as diverse handling options, flexible controllability and high precision, further enable droplets and LMs carrying small liquid biochemical samples to be ma... April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bender–extender elements, biochar–methanotroph–clay mixture, maximum constrained modulus, maximum shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio
During the service of a landfill, uneven soil settlement and earthquakes can cause changes to the pore structure and cracks in the covering layer. The use of a biochar−methanotroph−clay mixture as a new landfill covering layer, can improve its engineering properties. The biochar−methanotroph−clay mixture’s shear-wave velocity and compression-wave velocity were measured by the bender−extender element test, and the elastic parameters under small-strain conditions, such as maximum shear modulus, Gmax, maximum constrained modulus, Mmax, and Poisson’s ratio, ν, were obtained. The parameters showed that the elastic characteristics and lateral deformation capacity were of great significance for settlement, seismic field, and stress−strain analysis. Based on the bender−extender element test, the effects of different compaction degrees, and biochar content on Gmax, Mmax, and ν of the biochar−clay mixture, and different methane cultivation days on the biochar−methanotroph−clay mixture, were inve... April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, cloud model theory, Genetic Algorithm, risk assessment, risk control, tunnel construction by immersed tube method
Due to the complexity of risk factors in constructing immersed tube tunnels, it is impossible to accurately identify risks. To solve this problem, and the uncertainty and fuzziness of risk factors, a risk assessment method for immersed tube tunnel construction was proposed based on WBS-RBS (Work Breakdown Structure-Risk Breakdown Structure), improved AHP (analytic hierarchy process), and cloud model theory. WBS-RBS was used to analyze the risk factors of immersed tube tunnel construction from the aspects of the construction process and 4M1E, and built a more comprehensive and accurate construction risk index system. The weight of each index was calculated by the improved AHP of a genetic algorithm. The cloud model theory was used to build the cloud map of risk assessment for immersed tunnel construction and evaluate construction risk. Taking the Dalian Bay subsea tunnel project as an example, the risk assessment method of immersed tunnel construction was verified. The results showed th... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fluid-solid coupling, hot dry rock, hydraulic fracturing, micro-mechanical simulation, particle flow
The formation of a rich underground-seam network is the key problem in the development of low-permeability hot dry rock (HDR) resources. Considering the lack of macroscopic continuum theory to study hydraulic fracturing having preset fracture-interface element, the particle-flow method of micro-mechanical discrete-element theory is introduced to simulate the mechanical behavior of hydraulic fracturing for HDR low permeability reservoirs. The reservoir is simulated as a round particle; the fracturing fluid movement is described by the seepage field equation, and rock movement is described by the displacement field equation. Finally, the particle-flow numerical model of hydraulic fracturing for HDR low permeability reservoirs is established under the condition of fluid-solid coupling: the model contains two parts (rock and fracture). Based on the parallel-bond model, a definition of micro-fractures of hydraulic fracturing is given. The relation between the fracturing effect and influence... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: compressive strength, design codes, flowability, glass concrete (GC), recycling, replacement ratios, steel tube filled by glass concrete (GCFST), waste glass (WG)
Waste glass (WG), as a nonbiodegradable material, poses a threat to environmental protection. The reuse of WG as a raw material to replace cement or aggregate in concrete production is gaining attention for recycling purposes. However, the optimal proportion of WG in concrete mixtures and its particle size distribution are hard to determine. Large glass particles are prone to leading to the undesirable alkali−silica reaction (ASR) in concrete. Therefore, in this study, cement and aggregate in concrete mixtures are partially replaced by combinations of glass powder (<30 μm) and glass beads (0.2−1.7 mm), respectively. Glass concretes (GCs) containing waste glass at various replacement ratios (0, 10, 15, 20, and 30%) are prepared, and their flowability and compressive strength are evaluated and compared. Finally, steel tubes filled by ordinary concrete (OCFSTs) and steel tubes filled by glass concrete (GCFSTs) are fabricated and tested in axial compression. The test results show that t... [more]

Keywords: ADS Subcritical Reactor, deep subcriticality, heterogeneity of neutron fluence rate in time–space, Monte Carlo homogenization method, neutron kinetics
For the sake of understanding the mechanism of deep subcriticality and high heterogeneity of neutron fluence rate in time−space on the neutron kinetics of the Accelerator-driven Subcritical Reactor Subcritical Reactor (ADSR) under varied beam transients and neutron spectra. A Monte Carlo homogenization approach for the neutron time−space kinetics of the ADSR is proposed in this study, and the influence mechanism on the kinetic parameters of the ADSR under varied neutron spectra, subcriticality, and beam transients is examined. The results show that the Monte Carlo homogenization for the α eigenvalue mode is more adaptable to the subcriticality characteristics under varied subcriticality; under beam transients, the relative differences in the kinetic parameters of the different modes of the ADSR with fast/thermal spectra increase with the depth of subcriticality, and the differences in neutron generation time for varied modes are larger than those of effective fraction of delayed neutro... Ting Chen, Laiming Song, Xueying Zhang, Yawen Yang, Huifang Fan, Bin Pan
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 storage in saline reservoirs, minerals, reactions, rocks, wettability
Wettability in CO2-brine-mineral/rock systems is an important parameter influencing CO2 storage capacities and leakage risks in saline reservoirs. However, CO2 tends to react with various minerals and rocks at subsurface conditions, thus causing temporal and spatial wettability changes. Although many relevant research works have been published during past years, a thorough overview of this area is still lacking. Therefore herein, reaction-induced wettability changes are reviewed, and the underlying mechanisms are discussed. Current research gaps are identified, future outlooks are suggested, and some conclusions are drawn. The fundamental understanding of reaction-induced mineral and rock wettability changes during CO2 storage in saline reservoirs is analyzed and the guidance for long-term CO2 containment security evaluations is provided.

This paper presents the application of prediction in the analysis of market price volatility in Polish conditions of wood processing by-products in the form of biomass. The ARIMA model, which takes into account cyclical, seasonal, irregular fluctuations of historical data on the basis of which the forecast and long-term trends of selected wood products were made, was used in predicting prices. Comparisons were made between the ARIMA prediction method and the multiplicative Winters−Holt model. During the period studied (2017−2022), the changes in the market price of biomass were characterized by a wide spread of values. On average, the price of these products increased from 2017 to the end of 2022 by 125%. The price prediction analysis showed seasonal fluctuations in the case of wood chips. The uncertainty in price prediction is due to changes in supply resulting from the influence of global factors. The Diebold−Mariano test of matching accuracy confirms that the price prediction of the... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deterministic, distribution network, electric vehicle, hosting capacity, Optimization, solar PV, stochastic, streamlined, time series
The increasing demand for electricity and the need for environmentally friendly transportation systems has resulted in the proliferation of solar photovoltaic (PV) generators and electric vehicle (EV) charging within the low voltage (LV) distribution network. This high penetration of PV and EV charging can cause power quality challenges, hence the need for hosting capacity (HC) studies to estimate the maximum allowable connections. Although studies and reviews are abundant on the HC of PV and EV charging available in the literature, there is a lack of reviews on HC studies that cover both PV and EVs together. This paper fills this research gap by providing a detailed review of five commonly used methods for quantifying HC including deterministic, time series, stochastic, optimization, and streamlined methods. This paper comprehensively reviews the HC concept, methods, and tools, covering both PV and EV charging based on a survey of state-of-the-art literature published within the last... [more]

Ireneusz Pielecha, Filip Szwajca
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methane/propane combustion, prechamber, TJI combustion
The possibilities for reducing the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines focus mainly on developing combustion systems, as one such solution is a two-stage combustion system using jet ignition. The combustion of gaseous mixtures with a high excess air ratio leads to an increase in overall efficiency and a reduction in the emissions of selected exhaust components. In such a convention, gas combustion studies were conducted in the methane/propane configuration. Using an active prechamber where spark plugs were placed and direct injection through a check valve, the fuel dose was minimized into the prechamber. The tests were conducted for a constant center of combustion (CoC). The combustion process in both the prechamber and main chamber was analyzed using a test stand equipped with a 0.5 dm3 single-cylinder engine. The engine was controlled by varying the fuel supply to the prechamber and main chamber in excess air ratio λ = 1.3−1.8. The study analyzed thermodynamic indices suc... [more]
