Energy and Water Savings during Backwashing of Rapid Filter Plants
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: bed expansion, fluidization, water filtration
This paper describes an analysis of the effects of adjusting the intensity of filter backwash to the water temperature. The consequences of the lack of such adjustment for the life of filter beds, the amount of water used for backwashing, the amount of energy used for backwashing and the quality of the first filtrate are presented. In order to determine the losses and profits resulting from controlling the intensity of backwash water depending on its temperature, an analysis was carried out at a water treatment plant in southern Poland. Laboratory measurements were used to determine the granulation and specific gravity of sand grains filling the filtration beds. On the basis of measurements on a semi-technical scale, the magnitudes of filter bed expansion were determined for average monthly wash water temperatures. They were first calculated from the Richardson−Zaki equation, using different formulae for the value of the exponent of the power in this equation. Due to significant differ... [more]

Study of the Thermochemical Properties of Lignocellulosic Biomass from Energy Crops
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, energy crops, Populus, short rotation crops
The cultivation of short rotation coppice (SRC) is a sustainable and ecological alternative for the production of energy vectors today. For its use, it is necessary to know the thermochemical properties of the biomass produced, as well as the differences between genotypes and varieties. In this work, the thermochemical properties of five different Populus clones grow up in Mediterranean basin, with two different age categories, are analyzed. The moisture content, wood density, heating value, ash content, energy density, composition and the volatile matter were measured, separating wood and crust fractions. The mean crust content for all clones was near to 10% but it is observed that the youngest clones have higher content of crust and humidity. The 3 year-old clones generally show lower humidity and ash content and higher density of wood and fixed carbon, consequently showing a higher heating value. In addition, 3 year-old clones are encouraged since they have a lower content of majori... [more]

Study of the Influence of the Lack of Contact in Plate and Fin and Tube Heat Exchanger on Heat Transfer Efficiency under Periodic Flow Conditions
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat exchanger, plate-fin tube, tube-fin contact
Plate fin-tube heat exchangers are widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems and other industry fields. Various errors made in the manufacturing process can result in the formation of an air gap between the tube and fin. Several numerical simulations were carried out for a symmetric section of plate fin-tube heat exchanger to study the influence of air gap on heat transfer under periodic flow conditions. Different locations and sizes of an air gap spanning 1/2 circumference of the tube were considered for the range of airflow velocities. Velocity and temperature fields for cases with air gap were compared with ideal thermal contact cases. Blocking of heat flow by the gap leads to the reduction of heat transfer rate. Fin discontinuity in the front of the tube causes the smallest reduction of the heat transfer rate in comparison to the ideal tube-fin contact, especially for thin slits. The rear gap position is the worst in the smallest gap range. Therefore, reversing the... [more]

Evaluation of the Impact of Weather-Related Limitations on the Installation of Offshore Wind Turbine Towers
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: discrete event simulation, installation planning of offshore wind parks, measurements, offshore wind energy, weather influences
Weather conditions have a significant impact on the installation of offshore wind turbines. The rules for installation set clear limits. These limits are usually based on estimations of various experts and not on real assumptions and measurements on-site. When wind speeds and wave heights are too high, work cannot be carried out, and this leads to delays and additional costs. Therefore, we have carried out a measurement campaign during the installation of rotor blades to investigate to which extent the limits can be adjusted by using a tuned mass damper. The results from the measurement campaign—specifically empirically derived significant wave height limits—are used in a discrete event simulation. This study simulates delays resulting from weather conditions. Based on this, the total installation costs are considered. The results of the measurement campaign show that a safe installation with the use of a damper is possible at wave heights of up to 1.6 m. With the discrete event simula... [more]

Zero-Emission Pathway for the Global Chemical and Petrochemical Sector
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical and petrochemical sector, circular economy, decarbonisation, electrification, material flow analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The chemical and petrochemical sector relies on fossil fuels and feedstocks, and is a major source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The techno-economic potential of 20 decarbonisation options is assessed. While previous analyses focus on the production processes, this analysis covers the full product life cycle CO2 emissions. The analysis elaborates the carbon accounting complexity that results from the non-energy use of fossil fuels, and highlights the importance of strategies that consider the carbon stored in synthetic organic products—an aspect that warrants more attention in long-term energy scenarios and strategies. Average mitigation costs in the sector would amount to 64 United States dollars (USD) per tonne of CO2 for full decarbonisation in 2050. The rapidly declining renewables cost is one main cause for this low-cost estimate. Renewable energy supply solutions, in combination with electrification, account for 40% of total emissions reductions. Annual biomass use grows to... [more]

Optimization of Wind Energy Battery Storage Microgrid by Division Algorithm Considering Cumulative Exergy Demand for Power-Water Cogeneration
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cumulative exergy demand, desalination, division algorithm, Optimization, reliability, wind energy
This study investigates the use of division algorithms to optimize the size of a desalination system integrated with a microgrid based on a wind turbine plant and the battery storage to supply freshwater based on cost, reliability, and energy losses. Cumulative exergy demand is used to identify and minimize the energy losses in the optimized system. Division algorithms are used to overcome the drawback of low convergence speed encountered by the well-known method genetic algorithm. The findings indicated that there is a positive relationship between cost, cumulative exergy, and reliability. More specifically, when the loss of power supply probability is 10%, compared to when it is 0%, the total cumulative exergy demand and total life cycle cost are reduced by 34.76% when the battery is full and 45.44% when the battery is empty and there is a 44.43% decrease in total life cycle cost, respectively. However, the more reliable system, the less exergy is lost during the production of 1 m3 f... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cloud movement, sky image processing, solar irradiance prediction
Solar energy production based on a photovoltaic system is closely related to solar irradiance. Therefore, the planning of production is based on the prediction of solar irradiance. The optimal use of different energy storage systems requires an accurate prediction of solar irradiation with at least an hourly time horizon. In this work, a solar irradiance prediction method is developed based on the prediction of solar shading by clouds. The method is based on determining the current cloud position and estimating the velocity from a sequence of multiple images taken with a 180-degree wide-angle camera with a resolution of 5 s. The cloud positions for the next hour interval are calculated from the estimated current cloud position and velocity. Based on the cloud position, the percentage of solar overshadowing by clouds is determined, i.e., the solar overshadowing curve for the next hour interval is calculated. The solar irradiance is determined by normalizing the percentage of the solar u... [more]

Yearly Electrical Energy Assessment of a Photovoltaic Platform/Geothermal Heat Pump Prosumer
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pump, photovoltaic system, prosumer, renewable based energy mix, self-consumption
Romania introduced in 2018 an amendment to the national law 220/2008 by including the Prosumer concept that allows investors in grid-connected photovoltaic systems with a capacity up to 27 kWp to receive a feed in tariff for the electricity delivered to the grid representing approximatively one third of the price paid when the electricity is consumed from the grid. Thus, the challenge is to use as much as possible the photovoltaic power when it is produced. A methodology is developed to evaluate how much of the electrical energy output of a grid-connected photovoltaic platform is used by a geothermal heat pump for space heating in a building. A numerical simulation is performed in Trnsys17 based on locally measured meteorological parameters over a period of one entire year. A case study is presented for which the characteristics of the building, of the heat pump system and of the photovoltaic system are described and integrated into the transient simulation environment. The Internal Residual Gas and Effective Release Energy of a Spark-Ignition Engine with Various Inlet Port−Bore Ratios and Full Load Condition
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ERE, ERG, HC emission, IPD/B ratio, NOx emission
This paper presents the effect of inlet port diameter−bore ratios (IPD/B) on the effective release energy and internal exhaust residual gas of a spark-ignition engine. To investigate the exhaust residual gas in the combustion chamber, a simulation model is setup based on AVL-boost software, and to validate the simulation model an experimental model is also setup. The results of the research show that: the IPD/B ratios have a large effect on the residual gas and effective release energy. When the IPD/B ratio increases from 0.3−0.5, the residual gas increases from 0.11% to 0.14%, and the effective release energy increases from 0.33 KJ to a maximum value of 0.45 KJ, and after that decreases. The engine shows the maximum effective release energy at IPD/B ratio is 0.4. The emission of HC and CO is decreased, but the NOx is increased until a maximum value after that decreased.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algorithm, home storage, prosumers (consumer + producer), smart grid, smart homes, smart street, SOC (state of charge), street storage
The world demands a smart and green future in every sector, which directly corresponds to increases in electrical energy demand one way or another. It is unfeasible to attain future energy demand with the present electrical infrastructure. That means more research and development is required. Future energy sources should be intermittent, and, in addition, the energy sector should be more inwards for distributed energy generation with demand side control. In such cases, the smartest and most autonomous system would be essential to deliver an adequate power supply with all electrical properties. A real-time monitoring and control system with a self-healing infrastructure is a forthcoming desideratum. By accepting these challenges, we have designed a smart street. The basic idea of the smart street is presented in this paper as a landing page; the paper is more focused on emphasizing information regarding the electrical energy flow algorithm for the household, street, and street battery s... Fiscal Pressure as a Trigger of Financial Performance for the Energy Industry: An Empirical Investigation across a 16-Year Period
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy industry, financial performance, fiscal pressure
Taxation exerts pressure on the economic activities of all companies, including economic entities that operate in the energy industry. This study examined the degree to which fiscal pressure influenced the financial performance of 88 publicly listed companies from the energy industry during a time frame of 16 years (2005Q1−2020Q3). By modelling financial data from the oil, gas and electricity sectors with panel data techniques, our results showed that fiscal pressure had a significant effect on the evolution of company financial performance measured by return on assets, return on equity and return on investment. The study revealed that fiscal pressure had a more positive impact on the financial performance of energy companies than a negative impact. This conclusion is important for overall taxation in the energy industry since corporate taxes, excise duties and mandatory labor contributions are basic resources for state budgets. Our empirical results imply important research directions... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC/DC power converters, energy consumption, energy harvesting, energy measurement, supercapacitors, TEC, TEG, TES, water flow meter
In this study, we present the results of measuring the performance of selected Peltier cells such as thermoelectric Peltier cooler modules (TEC), thermoelectric micro-Peltier cooler modules (TES), and thermoelectric Seebeck generator modules (TEG). The achieved results are presented in the form of graphs of powering system output voltage or power efficiency functions of the load impedance. Moreover, a technical solution is also presented that consists of designing a water consumption power supply system, using a renewable energy source in the form of a Peltier cell. The developed measuring system does not require additional batteries or an external power source. The energy needed to power the system was obtained from the temperature difference between two sides of a thermoelectric cell, caused by the measured medium which was flowing in a copper water pipe. All achieved results were investigated for the temperature difference from 1 to 10 K in relation to the ambient temperature.

Failure Mechanism Analysis and Support Technology for Roadway Tunnel in Fault Fracture Zone: A Case Study
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: advanced grouting, failure mechanism, fault fracture zone, support technology
This paper introduces a case study on the failure mechanism and support design of a roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone of the 106 mining area in the Yuandian no.2 coal mine. Based on the on-site geological conditions (in-situ stress test, borehole television imaging, and lithological analysis), the failure mechanism of the roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone was studied. The test results showed that the high tectonic stress, fractured rock, and poor lithology are the primary reasons for the roadway instability. According to the support principles of grouting reinforcement, pre-reinforced support, and rational support range, a new type of combined support technology was proposed, including advanced grouting, grouting bolts, and grouting anchor cables. A 100 m roadway section was selected for field testing using the new support scheme, and detailed deformation monitoring was performed. Monitoring results showed that the roadway deformation under the new support was significa... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clean cooking, demand-side management, eCook, low-and middle-income countries, mini-grids, rural electrification, technical challenges
This paper lays out a methodology that could be used by mini-grid developers to assess the design readiness and future design requirement to accommodate electric cooking (eCook). While mini-grids in developing countries continue to grow in popularity, typically their designs are not yet sufficiently developed to accommodate large power appliances. Moving towards clean cooking using electricity will cause technical risks for mini-grids in terms of voltage drop, voltage unbalances and capacity shortage. In this paper, these parameters are studied on a mini-grid network modeled in OpenDSS/MATLAB as a simulation platform, where the selected mini-grid topology is hub and spoke. Two network studies are considered, the first investigates the limitations of the mini-grid in terms of the generation capacity available to supply the demand for different levels of eCook penetration, while the second focuses on the network constraints for different eCook penetrations. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC network, diode rectifier, HVDC transmission, modular multilevel converter, offshore oil/gas platform, offshore production, offshore wind power
A diode rectifier-modular multilevel converter AC/DC hub (DR-MMC Hub) is proposed to integrate offshore wind power to the onshore DC network and offshore production platforms (e.g., oil/gas and hydrogen production plants) with different DC voltage levels. The DR and MMCs are connected in parallel at the offshore AC collection network to integrate offshore wind power, and in series at the DC terminals of the offshore production platform and the onshore DC network. Subject: Other
Keywords: ferrite PM, irreversible demagnetization, post assembly magnetization, reluctance torque, spoke-type PMSM
This paper describes a study on the improvement of the dehydration performance of the conventional washing machine model. Recently, as interest in improving the dehydration performance of washing machines has increased, the need for a study on a high-speed electric motor has emerged. However, this conventional spoke-type PMSM has difficulty in speeding up due to the following problems. First, field weakening control is indispensable for high-speed operation of an electric motor. This control method is a big problem in causing torque drop and irreversible demagnetization of the motor. Moreover, the centrifugal force increases during high-speed operation, which adversely affects the stiffness of the motor. Therefore, in this paper, a new rotor shape of spoke-type PMSM was proposed to solve the above problem.
