Neural Approach in Short-Term Outdoor Temperature Prediction for Application in HVAC Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Akaike information criterion, HVAC systems, neural networks, outdoor temperature forecasting, predictor selection
An accurate air-temperature prediction can provide the energy consumption and system load in advance, both of which are crucial in HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system operation optimisation as a way of reducing energy losses, operating costs, as well as pollution and dust emissions while maintaining residents’ thermal comfort. This article presents the results of an outdoor air-temperature time-series prediction for a multifamily building with the use of artificial neural networks during the heating period (October−May). The aim of the research was to analyse in detail the created neural models with a view to select the best combination of predictors and the optimal number of neurons in a hidden layer. To meet that task, the Akaike information criterion was used. The most accurate results were obtained by MLP 3-3-1 (r = 0.986, AIC = 1300.098, SSE = 4467.109), with the ambient-air-temperature time series observed 1, 2, and 24 h before the prognostic temperature as predi... Evaluation of Energy Price Liberalization in Electricity Industry: A Data-Driven Study on Energy Economics
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: electricity, electricity industry, energy intensity, energy price liberalization, GDP, high-dimensional data analysis, statistics, vector autoregressive models
This study aims to evaluate the effects of price liberalization on energy consumption intensity, because price liberalization leads to improved productivity, energy consumption management, and consumption reform. Although the energy consumption of large-scale factories and industries has increased dramatically, and the energies losses have an increment in the power transmission lines, this policy can result in decreasing the energy consumption intensity due to the changes in consumption patterns. If there is a correlation between two variables, the price can be a valid variable to control cost and increase consumption efficiency. The augmented Dickey−Fuller (ADF) and the Chi-squared tests are also employed to investigate the maneuverability of these variables in the first-order contrast. In this case study, the energy consumption intensity response to price changes using the data gathered between 1988−2020, has gained a confidence interval of these reactions at 95%. The proposed vector... [more]

Voltage Rise Regulation with a Grid Connected Solar Photovoltaic System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distortion, electrical circuit, power quality, reactive power, voltage rise
Renewable Distributed Generation (RDG), when connected to a Distribution Network (DN), suffers from power quality issues because of the distorted currents drawn from the loads connected to the network over generation of active power injection at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This research paper presents the voltage rise regulation strategy at the PCC to enhance power quality and continuous operation of RDG, such as Photovoltaic Arrays (PVAs) connected to a DN. If the PCC voltage is not regulated, the penetration levels of the renewable energy integration to a DN will be limited or may be ultimately disconnected in the case of a voltage rise issue. The network is maintained in both unity power factor and voltage regulation mode, depending on the condition of the voltage fluctuation occurrences at the PCC. The research investigation shows that variation in the consumer’s loads (reduction) causes an increase in the power generated from the PVA, resulting in an increase in the grid c... [more]

Remediation of Annular Gas Migration along Cemented Wellbores Using Reactive Mineral Fluids: Experimental Assessment of Sodium Bicarbonate and Sodium Silicate-Based Solutions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: annular fluid migration, cement, microannuli, mineral precipitation, permeability, reactive flow, sustained casing pressure, transport properties, wellbore integrity, zonal isolation
Achieving zonal isolation along wellbores is essential for upholding the containment integrity of subsurface reservoirs and preventing fluid seepage to the environment. The sealing performance of Portland cements conventionally used to create barriers can be severely compromised by defects like fractures or micro-annuli along casing−cement−rock interfaces. A possible remediation method would be to circulate reactive fluids through compromised cement sections and induce defect clogging via mineral precipitation. We assess the sealing potential of two prospective fluids: sodium bicarbonate and sodium silicate solutions. Reactive flow-through experiments were conducted on 6-m-long cemented steel tubes, bearing ~20-μm-wide micro-annuli, at 50 °C and 0.3−6 MPa fluid pressure. For the sodium bicarbonate solution (90 g/kg-H2O), reactive flow yielded only a minor reduction in permeability, with values remaining within one order. Injection of sodium silicate solution (37.1 wt.%, SiO2:Na2O molar... [more]

Spatial Model of Optimization Applied in the Distributed Generation Photovoltaic to Adjust Voltage Levels
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering, optimization process, photovoltaic distributed generation, smart grids, spatial database, systems modeling, voltage adequacy
The main objective of this work is to develop a methodology for analyzing the quality of the voltage level in the distribution power grid to identify and reduce the violations of voltage limits through the proposition of optimal points for the allocation of photovoltaic distributed generation. The methodology uses the geographic location of the power grid and its consumers to perform the grouping and classification in spatial grids of 100 × 100 m using the average annual consumption profile. The generated profiles, including the grid information, are sent to the photovoltaic distributed generation allocation algorithm, which, using an optimization process, identifies the geographic location, the required installed capacity, and the minimum number of photovoltaic generation units that must be inserted to minimize the violations of voltage limits, respecting the necessary restrictions. The entire proposal is applied in a real feeder with thousands of bars, whose model is validated with m... [more]

Modeling and Integrated Optimization of Power Split and Exhaust Thermal Management on Diesel Hybrid Electric Vehicles
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: diesel hybrid electric vehicle (DHEV), exhaust thermal management, nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC), power split
To simultaneously achieve high fuel efficiency and low emissions in a diesel hybrid electric vehicle (DHEV), it is necessary to optimize not only power split but also exhaust thermal management for emission aftertreatment systems. However, how to coordinate the power split and the exhaust thermal management to balance fuel economy improvement and emissions reduction remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, a hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) framework is proposed to coordinate the power split and the exhaust thermal management. The method consists of two parts: a fuel and thermal optimized controller (FTOC) combining the rule-based and the optimization-based methods for power split simultaneously considering fuel consumption and exhaust temperature, and a fuel post-injection thermal controller (FPTC) for exhaust thermal management with a separate fuel injection system added to the exhaust pipe. Additionally, preview information about the road grade is introduced to impr... [more]

Renewable Energy and CO2 Emissions: Empirical Evidence from Major Energy-Consuming Countries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, two-step GMM
The goal of this study was to contribute to the ongoing debate on the relationship between renewable energy (RE) and CO2 emissions. In particular, we explored the link between RE and CO2 emissions in a sample of major renewable energy-consuming countries for the period 2000−2015. Therefore, the major contribution of this study was to answer the question of whether a substantial shift to renewable energy consumption will lead to lower CO2 emissions. Using the two-step generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, our empirical results suggested that RE has a significant negative effect on CO2 emissions. For example, a one percentage point increase in RE leads to a 0.5% decrease in CO2 emissions.

MPPT Improvement for PMSG-Based Wind Turbines Using Extended Kalman Filter and Fuzzy Control System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Extended Kalman Filter, fuzzy logic control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind turbines
Variable speed wind turbines are commonly used as wind power generation systems because of their lower maintenance cost and flexible speed control. The optimum output power for a wind turbine can be extracted using maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategies. However, unpredictable parameters, such as wind speed and air density could affect the accuracy of the MPPT methods, especially during the wind speed small oscillations. In this paper, in a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the MPPT is implemented by determining the uncertainty of the unpredictable parameters using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). Also, the generator speed is controlled by employing a fuzzy logic control (FLC) system. This study aims at minimizing the effects of unpredictable parameters on the MPPT of the PMSG system. The simulation results represent an improvement in MPPT accuracy and output power efficiency.

The Effect of Temperature-Pressure Conditions on the RDF Gasification in the Atmosphere of Steam and Carbon Dioxide
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 gasification, refuse-derived fuel, steam gasification, thermovolumetry
This research aimed to assess the process conditions, temperature and pressure, on the gasification of alternative refuse-derived fuel (RDF) in the atmosphere of steam and carbon dioxide on a laboratory scale using a fixed bed reactor. For this reason, the selected RDF were analysed, including proximate and ultimate analysis, mercury content and ash composition. After that, isothermal gasification measurements using the thermovolumetric method were performed under various temperatures (700, 750, 800, 900 °C) and pressures (0.5, 1, 1.5 MPa), using steam and carbon dioxide as gasifying agents. The obtained results showed that in the entire analysed range, the increase in temperature positively affect both the steam and CO2 gasification of RDF. The formation rates of main components (H2 and/or CO) of the resulting gas, as well as yields of gas components and maximum carbon conversion degrees increase. However, this positive effect was the greater, the lower the process pressure was. In tu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow battery, non-aqueous, Prussian blue, redox-mediated, solid booster
This work presents Prussian blue solid boosters for use in high voltage redox-mediated flow batteries (RMFB) based on non-aqueous electrolytes. The system consisted of sodium iodide as a redox mediator in an acetonitrile catholyte containing solid Prussian blue powder. The combination enabled the solid booster utilization in the proposed systems to reach as high as 66 mAh g−1 for hydrated Prussian blue and 110 mAh g−1 for anhydrous rhombohedral Prussian blue in cells with an average potential of about 3 V (vs. Na+/Na). Though the boosted system suffers from capacity fading, it opens up possibilities to develop non-aqueous RMFB with low-cost materials.

Simulating Personal Carbon Trading (PCT) with an Agent-Based Model (ABM): Investigating Adaptive Reduction Rates and Path Dependence
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adaptive reduction rate (target), agent-based model, computational approach, personal carbon trading, price
A decade after the publication of seminal papers on personal carbon trading (PCT), few empirical studies on its implementation exist. Investigating how to design, set up and implement a PCT scheme for a community or country raises several difficulties. For instance, it is unclear how to introduce a reduction rate of CO2 allowances to ensure a steady decrease in CO2 emissions from households. Computational approaches have been introduced to address these challenges of PCT by providing an opportunity to test counterfactual scenarios. Among the benefits of an agent-based modeling approach (ABM) is the potential to directly address dynamic developments and introduce counterfactual situations. In this paper, we review existing modeling approaches and present an ABM for PCT. With simulations of an artificial population of 1000 and 30,000 agents, we address questions on the price and reduction rate of allowances. A key contribution of our model is the inclusion of an adaptive reduction rate,... [more]

Lithium-Ion Battery Parameter Identification via Extremum Seeking Considering Aging and Degradation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: battery aging, ECM, extremum seeking, Li-ion battery, parameter tracking, SoC, SoH
Battery parameters such as State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) are key to modern applications; thus, there is interest in developing robust algorithms for estimating them. Most of the techniques explored to this end rely on a battery model. As batteries age, their behavior starts differing from the models, so it is vital to update such models in order to be able to track battery behavior after some time in application. This paper presents a method for performing online battery parameter tracking by using the Extremum Seeking (ES) algorithm. This algorithm fits voltage waveforms by tuning the internal parameters of an estimation model and comparing the voltage output with the real battery. The goal is to estimate the electrical parameters of the battery model and to be able to obtain them even as batteries age, when the model behaves different than the cell. To this end, a simple battery model capable of capturing degradation and different tests have been proposed to replica... [more]

Co-Optimization of CO2 Storage and Enhanced Gas Recovery Using Carbonated Water and Supercritical CO2
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: carbonated water, CCUS, CO2 storage, enhanced gas recovery, Optimization
CO2-based enhanced gas recovery (EGR) is an appealing method with the dual benefit of improving recovery from mature gas reservoirs and storing CO2 in the subsurface, thereby reducing net emissions. However, CO2 injection for EGR has the drawback of excessive mixing with the methane gas, therefore, reducing the quality of gas produced and leading to an early breakthrough of CO2. Although this issue has been identified as a major obstacle in CO2-based EGR, few strategies have been suggested to mitigate this problem. We propose a novel hybrid EGR method that involves the injection of a slug of carbonated water before beginning CO2 injection. While still ensuring CO2 storage, carbonated water hinders CO2-methane mixing and reduces CO2 mobility, therefore delaying breakthrough. We use reservoir simulation to assess the feasibility and benefit of the proposed method. Through a structured design of experiments (DoE) framework, we perform sensitivity analysis, uncertainty assessment, and opti... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: base stations, cellular networks, diesel generator, HOMER, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
With the rapidly evolving mobile technologies, the number of cellular base stations (BSs) has significantly increased to meet the explosive demand for mobile services and applications. In turn, this has significantly increased the capital and operational expenses, due to the increased electricity prices and energy consumption. To generate electricity, power plants mainly rely on fossil fuels, which are non-renewable energy resources. As a result, CO2 emissions also increase, which adversely affect health and environment. For wireless access technologies and cellular networks, BSs are the largest power consumer, and the network energy consumption is mainly dominated by the network infrastructure, which makes the telecommunications sector liable for energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions around the globe. Alternatively, solar energy is considered as an eco-friendly and economically attractive solution, due to its cost-effectiveness and sustainability. In this paper, the potentials o... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AC breakdown characteristics, arresters, electric field calculation, icing conditions, lightning protection insulator
As a result of lightning strikes, pollution, and ice, overhead distribution wires might be short-circuited and trip. As a result, researchers have developed a new lightning protection composite insulator. There is still a need to test its pollution and icing performance. Based on the finite element and field test method, this paper studies the electric field distribution and AC (Alternating Current) breakdown characteristics of polluted novel lightning protection insulators under icing conditions. Firstly, the finite element calculated results show that this novel insulator’s electric field distribution is different from that of a conventional insulator. The locations with sizeable electric fields are located in the insulation section, and the electric field in the arrester section is tiny. In addition, when the insulator surface is covered with ice, there is an increase in the electric field along the surface and pin electrodes.
